It's not always black and white but the point is: the eternal availability brings long time income to artists. I'm fairly sure XMAS in 2025 is more profitable for Kylie than let's say one of her top ten hits of the 90s, even though it's a streaming era release.

This such a BS - surely an artist (or label or anyone involved) earns MORE money from a song that is streamed for like 2 billion times than a song that sold 200k copies in 1992? Even if the payment is like 0.001 pounds per stream, 2 billion streams would be 2 million pounds in royalties (+ whatever airplay would give). Not to mention, old songs get some streams all the time so it's all extra income. It's true that artists earned more per single release in a short term earlier, but the sales completely stopped when the single was out of stock like went 80k per week to couple of pounds in a month. For instance Kylie with Tears on My Pillow. It was out of chart after 8 weeks so she didn't earn much on the 9th week any more.
