haha - yes, chart manipulation like that would be possible, but you'd have to be totally insane to do it AND you'd simultaneously be boosting albums chart position and putting money into the pocket of an artist you presumably loathed at the same time?

To be reflective in a capitalist society of music consumption the ratio should be based on the average relative spend between the formats : if downloads average 99p each and paid for streaming services average 1p per steam then 99:1 is the appropriate ratio (which should change over time to reflect trends) : obviously free to listen to services excluded

The solution is both obvious and easy : simply subtract the TOTAL sales and streams of the lowest performing track from all tracks on the singles chart and add it to the album chart - problem solved

I agree entirely : this the 5th time recently this has happened (Weeknd, XX, j Cole, Stormzy). What SHOULD happen in these cases is that whatever the bottom track sells (e.g. About 8000 I think in the Weeknd case) should be subtracted from ALL the singles sales and thus count as 8,000 extra albums sales. That way particularly strong album tracks would still be able to chart without making a mockery of the "singles" chart
  5. Not sure if the full reason here, but I'm sure I recall in those days there were some odd rules for records 76-100 along the lines of they were excluded if had been in top 75 in previous few weeks and had to have a sales rise if some sort : so often no 100 was actually nearer 140.

...radio 1 could always go back to the old pre-87 model : REVEAL the chart fairly swiftly on Friday (new entries, climbers and top few songs) then play the whole top 40 on Sunday

Sunday is the only day I would ever sit down and listen to charts - have seriously fallen out of chart interest since the Friday move (much of that could also be down to Drake though! lol).

  9. ah - that makes sense : thanks
  10. anyone know why the Avicii track went from 43 to out of the top 100 last week? seems strange given the positions up to that point

Agree entirely with you here! Lost a point on the first no.1 for the same reason, so counting my 18 as a 19 (lol)
  12. ... I do distinctly recall the top 40 dj commenting on how great Phil Collins "one more night" was on cd ... So that would be fairly early 1985? Think it was Richard skinner
  13. very good point : especially as the streaming factor of 1:100 seems quite arbitrary
  14. really enjoyed this thread - good of you guys hosting to give up your time, thank you
  15. Lol - I'm afraid Elton and Band Aid were just charity products that happened to be chart eligible!
  16. sadly not - happy overtook mul of kintyre last week I believe
  17. including streams, it is now the biggest selling pop record in history!
  18. be great if Matt queued up Gareth Malone by mistake
  19. ....perhaps Bob Geldof's just tuned in expecting to be no1
  20. Perhaps the sentiments in "Prayer in C" were too controversial for some to warm to in the same way as Waves?
  21. Amazing (in a good way) that "Waves" is as high as number 4 ! so many years it's sales could have made it number 1 though
  22. True, but I think Ella will prove to out perform most x factor winners over time
  23. Wow - you're a sensitive soul to be on a forum like this! lol
  24. Funny how overrated "Thinking Out Loud" seems now : it's first 17 chart weeks it felt like an under appreciared gem, but now......!
  25. You really think so? Such a great voice, that would be a real shame
