  1. Revelling in anyone's death is hardly "trying to sully something so beautifully democratic", it's pitiful and a sad reflection of society today. As has already been said - she has family - why do you believe it is acceptable for their grief to be amplified in this way?

Perhaps if the press had been a little more balanced then this "pitiful and sad reflection" wouldn't be so in demand. And if she had shown a little more consideration for other peoples' families then again, this may not have been so amplified.

Just to clarify, I'm not actively advocating downloading the song - I'm merely defending peoples' right to do so if they wish. I personally think their time and money would be better spent trying to eradicate her legacy if they hate her so much.

  2. Amusing.

The whole "you weren't even alive when she was in power, so you don't have an opinion" is fundamentally stupid in its ignorance to the political climate and its presuming of ignorance in the people in question. Just because I'm only 19 doesn't mean I don't have a perspective on issues that happened before my time, let alone ones that are having devastating effects today. It's an argument by people trying to rewrite history in her favour and the mindless sheep that don't question them.

    Rant over.

It's amusing in the same way as PJ and Duncan's revival was amusing - because the beauty of today's chart is that anything with enough public backing can make it. If you think it's in bad taste, don't buy it. Get the fuck over it and stop trying to sully something so beautifully democratic.

  3. The 1983 manifesto was a disaster though. However much you may agree with some (or all) of it, it could hardly have been better designed to go against national opinion at the time.

Be that as it may, was it that different from what Foot and co had been saying all the way through that first term with a huge opinion poll lead?

  4. I got the quote wrong it was "the longest suicide note in history" from Gerald Kaufman- my apols

I know the quote, and the fact that it's coming from a Labour man doesn't mean it's true - Blairism and revisionism go hand in hand, after all.

  5. Even voting percentages are misleading. Labour voters in safe Labour seats are less likely to vote than Tory voters in safe Tory seats, so the figures naturally skew towards the Tories.

Regardless, I think it's dismissive to regard the 1983 Labour manifesto as a joke. It was undoubtedly brave, perhaps a little naive but it could have easily seen them elected in differing circumstances and set a new political agenda as Thatcherism did.

  6. Her reputation as an election winner is slightly warped, '79 is one thing but '83 and '87 were entirely reliant upon a split opposition - and obviously the Falklands with the former. It's hard to argue that she was crushingly popular, despite the parliamentary majorities.
  7. Even Neil Kinnock on last night's "Newsnight" said that Scargill had a significant contribution to the demise of the mining communities and that his "all or nothing" attitude made her increasingly intransigent on the matter. It's convenient to lay ALL the blame at her door but the truth is much less one sided.

Except I'm not as I acknowledged that Scargill was far from a saint. If anything you're being more unequivocally anti-Scargill than I and Simon are anti-Thatcher.

What makes me really angry is that people have so much loathing for Thatcher, but no doubt when Blair dies he will be remembered as a hero rather than the outrageous bullshitter of a war criminal he is. Whatever you thought about Thatcher, at least she was open and honest about her intentions. That Blair deliberately deceived us into going to war and is still profiting from that deceit, making millions from giving talks around the world, makes me quite ill. But the sheep-like public can only make simple associations like "right wing = evil" and "left = jolly lovely". I probably sound very right wing myself now. I'm not. I just loathe Blair and think for people to condemn Thatcher as the worst PM ever, when her (perceived) crimes have nothing on Tony's, is infuriating.

I disagree. Look at today's front pages - mixed reaction from the left, blanket adulation from the right. Can you honestly imagine the Guardian being so gushing about Blair, let alone the Telegraph?

  8. Arthur Scargill proved to be one of her greatest allies. Central Casting would have found it hard to come up with a union leader easier to turn into a hate figure.

The phrase "holding the country to ransom" has often been thrown at the unions. Somehow it is used less often against latge companies etc. who threaten to leave the country whenever it is suggested that they might, perhaps, like to pay a bit of tax.

Some of her union legislation was justified. No mainstream party is likely to suggest abolishing the need for a strike ballot. However, it was very one-sided. For example, she abolished the closed shop but it remains possible for an employer to ban unions.

Precisely, Scargill's rashness wasn't a licence for her to wreak havoc in the way she did.

  9. As much as you do not like Thatcher, I don't think you got a leg to stand on since you wasn't born when she was in office... but I do share your sentiments.

    Anyhow back on topic please.

Total irrelevance as the effects of her actions are still being felt today.

Paramore being in the mid 20s combined is pleasing.

  10. Let's be fair, the communities hardest hit by Thatcher's govenrment (specifically mining communities) were always doomed. In the '80s the mining industry was subsidised to the tune of hundreds of millions. In today's money that's into the billions. That was never sustainable and there was no point in pumping money into it. Although I would no doubt have felt differently if I was alive at the time and hailed from a mining community, the strikes were obnoxious and ill-advised. They made an enemy of one of the most bloody minded and fiercely determined politicians on the planet. That those communities were doomed to fall apart is not Thatcher's fault, industy was dying anyway. Unlike some, Thatcher wasn't in denial about that.

True to an extent, but the apparent glee she took in wiping them out is what grates - along with little effort to create jobs to replace those lost.

  11. Just because we weren't alive at the time, it doesn't mean we can't understand the devastation - the whole point is that it's still there for all to see even now. Although she did at least stop short of what's happening to the NHS now, so I can understand the last part of your argument.

I'll stop now. The 1975 are proving very frustrating, can never put on a long enough charge to make the top 10.

    "Radioactive" #12 combined.

  12. I'm not going to download it since I'm not a huge fan of the song and I'm trying to avoid going out of my way to celebrate her death, but it is quite fitting that "Ding Dong" looks like charting so high on Sunday. This is a big news story so it's only inevitable the charts will reflect the reaction to it, positive or negative.

Although middle aged Charlie will probably be here in decades to come complaining about poor taste when "War" by Frankie Goes To Hollywood hits #1 after Blair dies.

  13. They are generally bigger album sellers than singles, both of Riot! and Brand New Eyes went platinum while only four of their singles have sold much beyond their immediate fanbase (Misery Business, Decode, Ignorance and The Only Exception. Maybe Monster at a push).

#1 and 40-50k, they're as big as they were four years ago but obviously sales are slightly lower.
