  1. Or the FA could have made sure Capello stayed on until the end of the tournament as planned. I'd then have gone for a manager who is interested in the long term development of the squad and not just to improve his CV

And then we'd have gone out at the group stage, most likely. I'm not entirely sure who you've got in mind as a long term manager that would be willing to take on a team in such a mess as the one Capello would have left us in had he taken us into the tournament.

Hodgson's way was the only way that we were ever going to be in with a chance of winning Euro 2012, the squad is a stopgap one as we do have youngsters coming through who were either not ready or injured.

  2. Good to see Welcome to the Black Parade just about stick it out - surprised at Smack That though, was actually a genuinely big song but Eminem does have a habit of sailing too close to the wind in terms of Q4 releases. What a pity that Akon's sole #1 (excluding Just Dance) is now Lonely.
  3. Portugal are apparently contenders after beating a pretty sub-par Czech side. They'll be found out against Spain - in fact, they'd probably be found out by a team that plays the Czechs' game slightly better (hello England!).
  4. In the past couple of days we've had this, and we've had the statement from Danny Alexander saying that tax avoidance is the "moral equivalent" of benefit fraud... Good that finally someone says it, but are they actually going to make Tax Avoidance a criminal offence..?

It's hardly that simple given there's a variety of different methods and the tax avoiders will always be one step ahead of the law.

  5. "No Tomorrow" was weird in that respect, I'm not really surprised it held onto its status. Ne-Yo a little unlucky to be the week before "Crazy" but if I recall correctly there was something very fishy about Embrace being a close #2 that week with possibly some missing sales, so perhaps deserved.

  7. I still think we would have qualified under another manager. The doom and gloom merchants only really came out after Hodgson was appointed and the "people's choice" wasn't. Germany 2010 really taught a lot of people that we're not good enough (and we're still not). It's not any managers fault, it's just the players we need weren't being produced. Thankfully the next 2-3 years should see some more technically gifted players coming through, and hopefully we'll have a younger more in touch with modern day football ready to take charge of England.

There's an interesting article here about why Hodgson was a sensible choice for the tournament, and it does make me doubt whether we'd be in the last eight under Redknapp at least.

  8. Well we have a better chance against Italy than we do Spain. For the simple fact that I we really struggled playing against deep forwards today. They kept finding pockets of space in the first half. It would be similar against Spain. With Italy we have more of a chance. We'll be underdogs and rightly so, but the pundits on ITV were spot on today having possession doesn't anything if you can't score. Barcelona do it against Chelsea, the same with Bayern Munich. Happened with Liverpool so much this season aswell. We're actually set up like a more attacking version of di Matteo's Chelsea. I would put five in midfield against Italy, but Hodgson will stick to 4-4-2.

We do stand more of a chance against Italy but having a potential semi against Germany instead of Portugal kind of outweighs that.

Still, making the QFs is a good result and probably wouldn't have been achieved under another manager.

  9. Ashley Young must be shagging Roy Hodgson. How he keeps getting in the team I do not know. I guess Carroll will be the "Plan B" option.

Who is the alternative on the left though? Downing (whose presence in the squad is even more of a mystery now) and Oxlade-Chamberlain, who didn't make a brilliant impression against France.

  10. Should've rested Parker and played Jones IMO, the former looks shattered.

Harsh on Carroll but then again it would have been on Welbeck had he been dropped. Would have liked to have seen Walcott start as well.

  11. If you think that, then you clearly fail to understand my argument... There is no contradiction at all in this, the games ARE over-commercialised, and they wont make a return for London or Londoners.... This is yet again another example of the current Neo-Liberast thinking of "Public risk and private profits"... The tax-payer bears all the financial risk of the games, these Corporate Sponsors will be allowed to walk off with the profits from the increased revenue streams that millions of extra visitors bring in... Put it this way - millions more people consuming Coca Cola and McDonalds burgers will mean the UK profits for these companies will increase, the tax-payer will see none of that, that will go directly to Corporate HQ, or to off-shore tax havens, increased dividends to shareholder and bonuses for top executives... I repeat - Public Risk/Private Profit.... So, it's not in any way a contradiction to be against the over commercialisation and to criticise the games for representing very poor value for the tax-payer.....

Implying that none of the companies involved with the Games will pay any tax at all? Give over.
