  1. There was a brief point in 2012 where it looked like Obama might win with fewer votes, and Trump of all people advocated marching on the White House in protest at this affront to democracy (let's ignore that it's happened multiple times in history and as recently as 2000) - so to anyone tempted to do this I'd warn against it on the basis that winning the popular vote has a tiny chance of making a difference. And that Jill Stein is an anti-vaccination manifestation of everything that's wrong with green politics this side of Natalie "Carpetbagger" Bennett, but that's neither here nor there.
  2. It's quite telling that he came up with more policy initiatives in a two month leadership campaign than he did in the previous nine months as party leader. Anyhow, back on topic. Sajid Javid being at DCLG made the fracking somewhat inevitable. Eager not to be outdone, his planning minister Gavin Barwell the other day suggested that the problem with the housing crisis is that developers aren't building units small enough for millennials to live in.

It's a bit of a slow burn but I'm excited to see how it rolls out over 10 episodes. Just finished Stranger Things so this couldn't be more perfectly timed.
  4. This is true. There was a good Stephen Bush article the other day about how it's likely that immigrants and minorities will still end up being blamed for the inevitable economic consequences.
  5. Many people at the top of this government have got used over the last six years to making economic figures say what they want them to and covering up the particularly damning ones. It'll be a challenge to keep that up once we're out of the Single Market, but I'm sure they'll give it a go.
  6. Well they're adopting the rest of the UKIP manifesto, so may as well.
  7. It's that perverse scenario whereby you need a minimum number of people to vote for the result to be valid, and so if you all vote and lose narrowly on a high turnout it's actually a worse outcome than if you don't vote at all.

That's interesting. Hopefully it will have peaked by now and the shy vote won't provide a scare in November.
  9. Was that why he did it?
  10. I know it's convenient to completely ignore opinion polls, but the basic question remains - if the polls before 2015 were overestimating us and their methodology hasn't significantly changed, how on earth are we going to do when we're actually behind in the polls?
  11. That's highly debatable, and even before the referendum we were behind in the polls - six years into a Tory government and 10% behind Miliband at the same stage. And Corbyn's personal ratings were still the worst on record.
  12. When elections come around, the main parties are ultimately judged on competence. That's not necessarily synonymous with unity, particularly if you're the Tories.
  13. I didn't see us today but jesus. Up until 40 minutes into the Watford game nothing about our season had really surprised me - losing to City and Chelsea was hardly disastrous. Since then we've scored two and conceded eleven in 230 minutes. Abysmal. Bilic has always looked like he is able to learn from a tactical mistake (moving Antonio from RB for instance) but if we go into one more game with a midfield two of Noble and Kouyaté I will have serious questions. We'll never keep a clean sheet with a fragile defence (not had the same back four for any consecutive games this season) and two out of form box-to-box players ahead of them.
  14. That's the gamble, I suppose. They may as well go for it as they're so untouchable at the moment in terms of elections.
  15. I'm quite impressed by how you can hijack so many threads with this.
  16. You do realise we're not a populist party, right?
  17. Bit difficult when they're aren't any :D
  18. Always.
  19. We're going to be the last relevant party to have a full-time female leader. Christ.

I suppose the other aspect of that is that Clinton could come closer than any Democrat in two generations to winning Texas, stacking up loads more votes, but for no electoral college benefit. That won't be her strategy of course.
  21. It also shows how tactical many Olympic races are - athletes frequently win championships with times which would be nowhere near the best in the world in that given year. When you're not fully aware of where your rivals are, there's much more incentive to run at your absolute limit.

It's not dead, but it's a very long term trend away from the idea of listening to 12 or so songs in a row from the same artist unless you're already a fan. The vinyl format made it so it was difficult to do anything else. CD albums were wildly popular before downloads and streaming took off, partly as CD singles were a third the price of an album anyway. Downloads put paid to that, and streaming has accelerated the process whereby you can jump between releases, artists and genres with minimal effort. The idea of the single will last a long time because our music consumption is still largely based around individual songs. Albums are becoming increasingly a niche market, with more and more artists not even bothering to release them any more. It'll take a long time for them to completely die but that's the way it's going for many people.

Like Netflix and Chill crossed with Coronation Street. With that and Prestwich and Heywood, half of the new Greater Manchester constituencies sound like furniture stores. Don't even get me started on Altrincham and Tatton Park. I was enough of a middle class stereotype as it is.
