  1. Oh, I read that it was DYKWIM? at #2 on Oasis' best-sellers - I guess the difference comes in revising the sales estimates? Unless DYKWIM? has just been downloaded a lot more than DLBIA, but they don't really sell many downloads at all bar the occasional reappearance of Wonderwall or Stop Crying Your Heart Out AFAIA.
That list is probably from... actually I don't know when it could be from, "Don't Look Back In Anger" never charted after January 1997 and will be a far bigger trickle seller than "D'You Know What I Mean?".
  2. Probably conclusive evidence that rap =/= hip-hop (Vidcapper, PLEASE take note) - Ed Sheeran isn't hip-hop at all, yet the majority of "You Need Me, I Don't Need You" sees him rapping.

My point with Skrillex largely came from seeing him on the cover of RockSound magazine the other day, which describes itself as "punk/rock/metal/alternative" yet called an electronica producer (albeit one who used to be in a hardcore band) as 'the future of music'. Of course, it's possible that they've simply run out of stories about You Me At Six and Kids In Glass Houses to run on the cover

  3. This.

Surely 'Kid A' instead of 'Funeral'? Although I do prefer the latter.

"Kid A" isn't (or if it is, then barely) Radiohead's definitive album, so I'd find it hard to argue for it. For the same reason I'd almost instantly assume that "The Suburbs" won't be going on this list in 2020.

  4. Yeah. It's just such a sudden change, in such a short period of time. Like you mentioned Welcome to the Black Parade and America. It seems like just yesterday they were out. I honestly can't understand fully why. It's not like nothing has come and "replaced" rock music. And it's not like everybody who likes rock music has died.

It is cyclical to an extent - see the relative dearth of rock in the singles chart in the last couple of years of the '90s (although even then The Offspring had a big #1) but this year has seen just so little of note. 1991 saw Nirvana. 2001 saw The Strokes (and Linkin Park). 2011 has had... The Vaccines. And Foster the People. Great.

Speaking of things "replacing" rock music, the kind of dusbtep-electronica that Skrillex is currently pioneering is making big waves atm and certain bits of the rock community are really embracing it (while others will doubtless hate it and become completely alienated/borderline obsolete as a commercial force as a result). Whether the man himself makes a big commercial breakthrough or whether his music is simply the basis for the 'next big thing', I can see that really picking up speed in 2012. Dubstep in the UK has become very closely related to the hip-hop community and rock's best medium-term chance of some commercial success is taking the genre and making it its own. However, KoRn (who Skrillex has already collaborated with) are definitely not the ones to do that given they're basically old nu-metallers with an annoying kilt-wearing singer.

  5. Grr. Prefer "Pass Out" of the top two, like you said Bré it's a properly genre-defining song. I didn't like it at first but I grew to like first "Frisky" and then "Written In The Stars" by the time each was released to the point that I invested in Disc-Overy and "Pass Out" is easily my favourite thing on it now. His BRITs medley was unbelievably good - the indie fan in me wants to say that it was Arcade Fire who upstaged Adele that night ("Ready To Start" should have been MASSIVE), but in reality it was Tinie. At least in my head. :P

When it comes to "Empire State of Mind" I've always far preferred the original to Part II, despite the fact that I actually think Jay-Z's verses are one of the weakest things about it (he can do miles better) - the instrumentation is far superior IMO. It's a testament to how great the song is that a stripped down version, devoid of the best thing about the original, can become a huge hit in its own right.

  6. Ed Sheeran got to #1 on the RnB chart and the 1Xtra charts aswell. It seems like every genre is trying to claim him. I don't think he should be in any of those charts personally.

It's shocking how few new "rock" songs do well in the singles chart. Only a few years ago it was quite different. I doubt rock as a genre has got any less popular though, even though the singles chart suggests so. Like they do better in the album charts, for example.

There is an argument to say that it has gotten less popular - few rock albums really set the charts on fire any more and gig receipts, where bands tend to make most of their money, are only really increasing with the expanding market. These two points are arguably more valid in saying that rock is in decline than the genre's lack of presence in the singles chart, BUT it still brought it home when I saw in last week's chart thread that five years ago the top 2 consisted of MCR and Razorlight. Bands today can't sell in the same quantities as those did, let alone increase along with the rest of the singles market up to 2011 levels. I honestly don't know what's happened - it seems to me like these days the primary force motivating people to buy songs is "I heard it on a night out and really liked it", but the same clubbing culture still existed five years ago. Back then were there loads of 'mainstream' clubs playing "Welcome to the Black Parade"?

  7. I am prepared to listen to Oasis when Liam is singing. I find my favourites are Live Forever, Morning Glory, Some Might Say, Bring it On Down and Falling Down. I like Don't Go Away too.

Interesting then that "Falling Down" is sung by Noel. I've found that Noel's three singles off his solo album so far have all effectively been inferior versions of past Oasis singles ("The Death Of You and Me"/"The Importance of Being Idle", "AKA... What A Life!"/"Falling Down", "If I Had A Gun"/"Don't Look Back In Anger"). Since I love all those Oasis songs I really enjoy the Noel ones as well though.

  8. He could just choose to ignore it.. Like he's just choosing to ignore all the Corporate malfeasance and fraud, thieving and money laundering for drugs cartels that's going on in the Banking sector.... -_-

Given it's a LAW though, it would still require overturning given if he simply ignored it then it would be far more publicised than everything that you've described. There'd be a backlash in the US that the right-wing media would completely jump on.

  10. Disagree with you on the two points I've quoted. Buble won't do anywhere near 2 million this year. I was scorned for predicting in another thread that he'll do a million this year but think that's easily achievable with two or three good 200k+ weeks in December.

Think Adele will be top 5 Christmas week with big sales, something like 250k+. There are still many people who don't have it remember!

On that logic, Bullet For My Valentine's last album could be Christmas #1.

  11. He was talking about Morrison.

The Awakening has done very poorly sales-wise imo and Kasabian's album too

Kasabian's total is awful, they've not even doubled their week 1 total yet. "Velociraptor!" looks like it'll limp toward platinum whereas their last three have all done 600k or more.

  12. I was expecting Cher to do a bit better and is Nicole close to going Top 10 anytime soon?

Stay - Shakespears Sister at #105, if only this was reduced to 59p. Why is it the same songs are always 59p i.e. "Bring Me To Life".

It's not, BMTL is just the one mainstay

  13. It's be funny if Bublé gets to #1 because he'll absolutely plummet after Christmas - could he break Xtina's record?

    I doubt he'll be #1 though.

For some reason I suspect he wouldn't plummet quite that low straight off - with Christmas Day falling on a Sunday, he'll probably sell enough digitally in one day to prevent a catastrophic drop for the week as a whole.

  15. There's a difference between using DNA as a tool for solving crimes and holding a full DNA database. With the latter there is too much risk of cross-contamination - whether deliberate or accidental - leading to a wrong conviction.

There is a risk, which is why in practice a full database could be a bad thing because if it was implemented it would be used as the be-all and end-all evidence in many cases whereas if the prosecution used it in moderation and didn't hinge a case on it, it would be far more effective.

  16. There seem to be a few people putting 'Power' on the wrong end of their Group B votes - you guys realise it's meant to be at or near the top right? :kink:

It's going to have such a bipolar set of votes. I don't usually indulge in all this "my music is better than yours" stuff but I'd expect the people who put "Power" near the bottom of the votes to have a very strong correlation with those who haven't heard it very often. Such a grower, I was a bit "meh" on first listen but it's now my favourite Kanye track.
