  1. It's like a really shit House of Cards.
  2. Minor point, but they weren't. We lost seats.

Odds on Ser Pounce being on the new Small Council?
  4. Agreed that there's far deeper structural problems, but we could have still done a decent job in that tournament with someone other than Hodgson at the helm. Heard talk of Southgate taking it for a year until Wenger's contract is up. Not the worst idea.
  5. Actually Leanne Wood has done exactly that. Despite the slight problem that a majority in Wales voted to leave.
  6. Hands off Slaven Bilic. Otherwise... Hiddink? Tactics Tim is nearly as bad an idea as Glenn Hoddle.
  7. Because 50% is more than enough to win a seat. And I'm under no illusion that we should be enthusiastically campaigning for the EU post-referendum. We're not the Lib Dems.
  8. I went on that results page and clicked on the first local authority I could think of which matches up roughly to a marginal Westminster seat. That was High Peak, where the Tory MP sitting on a majority of 5,000 campaigned for Leave. The Leave vote in High Peak was 50.5%. Some landslide.
  9. Sorry, are you saying that backing EU membership wasn't the right approach? For a party whose supporters voted 70% Remain despite many not even knowing that the party had the same view?
  10. Your definition of "moderate" seems to change day by day. Firstly there's the seemingly obvious fact that council areas =/= constituencies. Also, Leave won by a relatively narrow margin. I haven't had chance to look at the results in detail (blame Glastonbury) but there will be plenty of areas containing target seats where the Remain vote was more than large enough for a party to unite it and win the seat. If Boris does become PM, the Tories could unwittingly become almost uniformly associated with Leave pretty quickly.
  11. But where from? The right of the party surely knows that there's so much political upheaval at the moment that a new centrist party could sink without trace. The left is more likely to split, but that would require Corbyn to go.
  12. I think we definitely need to choose between being for or against free movement. Beyond that, there's wiggle room regarding things like an immigration dividend and beefing up exit checks which are an easy sell to both sides. Did it occur to you that not every voter in a council area fits with your stereotype of their area? There's far more nuance than that and there are gains to be made all over the place. Regarding Corbyn, it seems to me that the right of the party was always going to jump at the chance to stick the knife in. What's telling is that the 'soft left; contingent of the Shad Cab has abandoned ship as well. They must know that if there's a leadership election and Corbyn makes the ballot he'll be almost impossible to beat, and (unlike the right) would baulk at the idea of deliberately keeping him off it. That suggests that they reckon he won't have the energy to stand again, clearing the way either for Watson to come in or for a soft left candidate to win the leadership contest on a unity ticket.

I honestly have no idea where half of the players were meant to be playing last night. Bertrand was immensely disappointing on the left, can't wait for Shaw to be fit again. Henderson did his shuttling role well but offered little passing quality. Wilshere didn't look match fit. Vardy was almost anonymous once Slovakia dropped deep. Sturridge had a couple of bright moments but gave the ball away too often given how deep he was playing. On the other hand, it's a credit to Eric Dier that two of the best attacking midfielders in the competition have now both had very quiet games against us. I wouldn't be particularly worried about any of the teams we might play from Group F, the annoyance is now that we'll play France in the QFs.
  14. The second BBC matches will be on BBC4.

This is looking pretty legit. You'd have thought Balon Greyjoy would have been worth a mention though.

  17. They were good against Belgium but it was hardly the defensive masterclass everyone was going on about, they conceded a few decent chances albeit to some good players. Today's game was bloody awful. They'll come into their own in the latter stages when they can more easily sit back and soak up pressure but I don't think there's many goals in the team against a good defence.

We got there in the end. The first half was poor from both teams, Wales never looked like scoring from open play and we started a lot less sharply than against Russia. Kane is clearly exhausted but we're lucky we've got such great options on the bench. Only looked like one winner once the substitutes started being used. Thought Rooney was very good again. Dread to think how poor our midfield passing quality would have been without him in there.

3-1 to England after Wales go ahead. I'll be listening to the radio at work, can't really pull a sickie since I'm taking five days off for Glastonbury!

I'd bring Wilshere in for Lallana and switch to a 4-2-3-1 with Rooney higher up (as good as he was last night, Russia's midfield was awful) and Alli cutting in from the left. Give Kane 45 minutes and if he's not cutting it, bring Sturridge on. The whole point of this squad is that we've got attacking options if someone isn't cutting it, we may as well use them.

If we'd have held on at the end then Hodgson's tactics would have been vindicated. Everyone bar Kane played pretty well, I'd be tempted to put Sturridge in for the Wales game. We're still favourites for that, although might have to rethink our midfield as Dier will presumably track Bale and I don't want it to be Rooney and Alli tasked with picking up Ramsey's runs.

Elizabeth Warren comes out in support of Hillary. While I can't help but think that having her on the ticket might not be the best idea, getting her endorsement is a big deal.
  23. Team unity might be a struggle next season after the exodus.
  24. He'll have a good idea how many of his Leicester teammates are likely to be there next season, and it'll probably have a big influence on his decision. He won't get a chance like this again, it'd be very telling of his character if he wasn't sorely tempted.
  25. We probably looked more coherent when we switched to 4-3-3 with Sterling, Sturridge and Lallana all playing in their proper positions. The main problem seemed to be that Vardy and Kane followed the Portugal full backs all the way back, which made it less of a diamond and more of a 4-3-3 with everyone playing out of position. In a diamond it should be the two wider CMs closing down the full backs as soon as they move past the defensive line and into the midfield, leaving the strikers free in the channels if we win the ball back. We played it really well in Switzerland 18 months ago with Delph in particular showing how it should be done.
