  1. It is probably our best squad since 2006, not that that's saying a great deal.
  2. Wishere is a class above Drinkwater if he's fit, which the medical staff must think he is. Right call. I'd have taken Townsend over Barkley.
  3. If the last 10-15 years proves anything, it's that securing a place in the top 4 is the only real springboard to sustained success. Chelsea won the FA Cup in 2000, had a Champions League run around the same time, but it was finishing 4th in 2003 that prompted Abramovich to buy them and they went on to finish 2nd and then 1st the next two seasons. Likewise City prioritised the league when the Abu Dhabi group came in. They finished 5th in 2010 and then spent big that summer (Touré, Silva, Milner, Kolarov and Balotelli with a load of dross going out) to secure a top 4 spot before pushing on again. The fact that they won the FA Cup that year was more by accident than design.
  4. What on earth are you talking about? Three years by the standards of any other club in England (and historically by United's own standards as well) isn't a long time to go without a trophy. The fact that it was over a decade since you last won the cup was more noteworthy.
  5. Surely the FA Cup win was tainted by the fact that the day wasn't even out and the manager was almost out of the door. I know most of the fans wanted rid of LvG, but the whole aftermath of the game was completely overshadowed by the fact that everyone knew what was coming. As for this "barren run of trophies", the fans need to get a grip. Three years isn't a barren run. You'll have to go longer than three years without a trophy at some point in the future, deal with it.
  6. As with every time someone tries to drag the housing crisis into a political argument about another issue, the best solution is just to build more houses. Always.
  7. Even with Rashford, United are still short up front. Probably better value options than Zlatan out there but the lack of transfer fee makes it seriously tempting.
  8. Apologies for going full on morbid but this got me wondering. When we lost Bowie and Prince this year, the charts were flooded with their hits. As far as I'm aware, none of their best known songs peaked higher after their deaths than they had on original release. But which artists might see exactly this? There a loads of examples of well known songs which weren't chart hits at the time. Whose death might see another 'Man in the Mirror' moment? The one which first sprang to mind for me is Springsteen's 'Born To Run'. The man looks like he'll go on forever, but it remains pretty incredible that his best known song only reached as high as #16 as a live version in 1987.
  9. She knows exactly what she's doing. She wants to be seen as critical of the Remain campaign to avoid looking like a hypocrite when she inevitably starts talking up "Project Fear" again as soon as this is over and she can continue to campaign full time for a second referendum.
  10. When he's fit, Wilshere is a class above any of our other CMs. Hodgson made the right call in including him in the 26 to assess his fitness, and if he's satisfied with that then he fully deserves his place. Carrick should have made the World Cup squad two years ago (and for pretty much every tournament since 2006) ahead of Gerrard or Lampard but he's a bit past it now.
  11. France and QFs for us. Should top the group fairly comfortably, our last 16 opponents aren't likely to be anyone scary but I still fear our defence will get found out against a big team. Any further is a success, going out in the last 16 would be a failure.
  12. Apparently the announcement of LVG's sacking was timed to coincide with the opening of the New York Stock Exchange. If that's true, it tells you a lot about what United now are as a club. Mourinho has wanted this for years. He expected to be Ferguson's replacement, but the club in their infinite wisdom went with Moyes. This way might suit Mourinho better since there's lower expectations now.
  13. Only fair really. Looks like Schweinsteiger's main contribution in his United career will be bundling Randolph into the net during the first leg of the quarter final.
  14. Does that also explain why we're a point behind you?
  15. It would be fitting to end our time at the Boleyn doing what we do best and ruining United's season.
  16. That fake electoral map doing the rounds on Twitter makes me want to gouge my eyes out.
  17. I saw quite a lot about Wales actually, particularly on the "round-up" sections where they covered Scotland in brief as well. By contrast, I only found out from friends that the Lib Dems had taken Watford. The focus on the local news in the North West was (unsurprisingly) them losing control of Stockport, although I managed to sneak on there for a second by virtue of losing to the leader of Trafford Council.

You mean the Republican Chris Christie who endorsed Trump?
  19. There's plenty of Tory voters (and MPs) who rather like the BBC and will object rather loudly to Whittingdale's proposals, which include shifting every show which gets high ratings to a different time slot so as not to get in the way of the commercial stations. They might be less inclined to defend it if the Beeb is seen to be biased against them. As an organisation it's guilty of generally being a bit small-c conservative at times and completely beholden to the Royal Family (these two things may be related). That's because it's part of the establishment and inherently reliant on the government of the day to provide it with the funding to keep going. The Tories can't just "do away with it" without enormous public uproar and wasting of political capital which they'd rather spend on changes to education, health or welfare - why give them the excuse?
  20. Would you miss the BBC if it was gone?
  21. You really can't see the wood for the trees can you?
  22. With UKIP it's more that 2013 was their breakthrough year so they've not been this competitive in these seats before.
  23. Yeah that's not what PR is.
  24. I have it on good authority that the new Ms. Brightside will be a fantastic MP. Really pleased to see vote share going up.
  25. Spurs losing key players for their final two games does of course raise the possibility that, miraculously, they'll finish behind Arsenal for the 20th year in a row.
