  1. Publicity innit. I can't see there being anywhere near the furore that there was for "Blurred Lines" because:

    1. Less / no nudity

    2. More explicitly tongue-in-cheek

    3. It won't sell as much

I can't decide whether it's great or just like Duran Duran on a really bad trip. I still love the song but I've moved onto "Heart Out" now.

  2. But nothing in your theory adds up. Even someone who thought Blair was a neoliberal stooge who didn't care about most people (and believe me, I know a few) would find it difficult to pin him as a genocidal maniac. Your other examples were exactly that, maniacs who were hell bent on adhering to some great philosophy on life. What was Blair trying to achieve? People don't just kill for no reason, and politicians sanctioning attacks in a foreign country certainly don't.
  3. In the literal sense of the word you are right, there was no racial or Hitler style master race element to it

But in many ways this is even worse, Hitler had a vision, an extremely f***ed up one but still a vision that drove him to do what he did

Milosevic and Karadzic were nationalists who again did what they did out of a twisted vision

Blair and Bush just massacred 26,000 Iraqis for kicks as if they were playing a video game, no vision or motive or warped logic, just plain old killing spree, there was no strategic or military importance into carpet bombing residential areas of Baghdad

This is also mental. Are you suggesting they did it because they were bored?

  4. I can't really comment on the Darling Plan until I have read it, i will get up to speed on it next week when i am in the UK again and update this thread with my thoughts

That's the last we'll hear of that then.

I don't see why retirement age shouldn't rise with life expectancy. Obviously there are statistical problems with the two so I wouldn't want to tie the former to the latter with no leeway but it has to be related.

  5. Welfare and NHS account for well over 1/3 of government spending, labour have repeatedly condemned efforts to rein in the welfare budget and also NHS reforms

I have not read the Darling Plan but at best it would have been tinkering at the edges while throwing vast sums into welfare and NHS

"Welfare" meaning pensions, mostly. Good luck with that one.

And cutting the deficit in half over five years is hardly tinkering at the edges.

  6. Then the majority of new arrivals must have found jobs then because bar a couple of months the number unemployed has dropped almost month on month

Unemployment is still too high but if labour were in charge I have no doubt it would go up not down

Because history suggests unemployment is always high when Lab... oh wait.

  7. Unemployment is dropping like a stone, there is 30m in work for the first time ever

That has to be the single most idiotic thing you've come up with since you came back.

There are over 400k more people in the country than LAST SUMMER, to start with.

  8. The important thing for the nation right now, is the re election of a majority tory government in 2015, the alternative is too terrifying to imagine

Labour will just spend spend spend borrow borrow borrow and within 3 years we will be another Greece

I would rather the current government takes the risk on creating a mini boom if it ensures a majority in 2015, the future of the nation is at stake, so while there are risks involved in 95% loans it is a risk worth taking, home owners voted overwhelmingly tory in 2010 so more and more homeowners equals more and more votes for us.

If it all goes pear shaped the damage will be a lot less than the damage caused by labour turning a blind eye to the banks for years and selling off our gold for a fraction of its worth

House price boom, more and more new buyers who most likely will vote tory, plus hopefully pre election tax cuts should see us win comfortably in 2015, we are only 1% behind now according to You Gov

So you admit that the crisis was caused by "turning a blind eye to the banks" but think that the party that back more deregulation has the means to solve it. Right.

I would say it's like talking economics with an 11 year old but I'd insulting the children.

Might have gone a bit hyperbolic but yeah.

  10. Looks like we'll jump up to 11th tomorrow, which seems fair. If they still included past record we'd probably be seeded.

I'll reserve judgement on whether it's good to not be seeded until the playoff results, if they go the way we'd expect then the European pot will probably be stronger than the seeds. Going to be very difficult for teams from the other two pots to get into the last 16, although Chile, Ecuador and maybe the USA all look capable.

I'd rather see Henderson in the squad than Barkley simply because I think he's more solid and more useful against the big teams. We shouldn't lack firepower against smaller teams so I don't see the point in taking a third Number 10 besides Wilshere and Rooney.

The draw will be interesting not just for who's in which group but for where the matches will be - the tournament will be in the Brazilian winter but it makes near to no difference near the Equator so here's hoping for a group with at least two games in the south. You'd think that aside from Spain, who'll pass everyone off the park anyway, that's the only chance for European teams to compete with the South Americans.

  11. Republicans throwing their toys out of the pram and nearly making the entire country default is, sadly, the result of a political system that deliberately puts checks and blocks on the power of the President because those who wrote the constitution thought it wasn't right to give so much power to one person. Note how it doesn't tend to happen in places with a parliamentary system.
  12. I've been critical of Roy, but he's done a good job in these last two games.

He's obviously very cautious, and sets out not to lose, which is not really very entertaining. I think he's realising that we're not as bad as everyone has made out to be. Not convinced we can keep the ball very well in midfield still, but we've a big goal threat these days.

Basically this. Sturridge had an off day and still caused problems, Rooney had a good game but I don't want him as the Number 10 against good teams. Having a Carrick-Gerrard-Wilshere midfield would mean decent ball retention and we've got plenty of options out wide.

Trouble is now that with Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain still to come back - and Townsend looking like he'll go - there's too many wide players who deserve a place. It could end up as a toss up for the last midfield spot between Lampard (experience), Cleverley (Hodgson favourite) and Henderson (likely to be in form). That's assuming that Barkley is in and no one comes out of the blue, I suppose Rodwell is the most likely if Fernandinho gets injured at City.

  13. The crucial difference is that, in the 1990s, people were more likely to believe what politicians said. At this point though, if a politician says something which seems to go so against what a particular person thinks about a party, they'll simply assume the politician is lying -- and a large reason for that distrust is because of the Blair/New Labour approach of disowning any policy position which isn't immediately popular - which despite it's initial huge success, in the long term only fed the perception that Labour was a bunch of power-hungry empty suits who'd ditch any principles they had to get in government, a perception which things like this risk continuing to feed.

I don't really think what Labour did in the 1990s in accepting free markets is really comparable to what's going on right now anyway: in the 1990s, while the policies they were supporting were questionable, they didn't (in themselves) hurt people. This time, they are insulting and threatening to inflict real pain on (and thus alienating) sections of society. As I think I've said before, Germany shows why the idea that left-wing parties gain "credibility" by giving up their traditional stances and screwing over their traditional supporters, is total nonsense: since the Social Democrats there brought in benefit cuts and redundancies for industrial workers in the early 00s (even more radical/right-wing than anything New Labour did), they have been getting hammered at every election, because loads of their traditional supporters were driven either to more radical left-wing parties or to simply stay at home, while they didn't gain any conservative voters to compensate either.

The difference being that the Germans have a reasonably centrist centre-right party that is still a credible option to most demographics in most areas of the country, so the SPD have their work cut out taking any votes away from them.

I personally reckon that Reeves' comments were just posturing and the lack of any real policies was indicative. I don't like the rhetoric but her predecessor went strangely quiet after saying similar things so I'm not too worried yet.

  14. :o I knew Don Broco's EP was on course to do pretty well but did not expect to see the song doing much. Especially as it's not even on the R1 A-list and I can't imagine it's getting much support elsewhere. Am I missing something or is this quite an out of the blue success for them?

I thought low top 40, it's beyond 300k views now. It seems a bit odd that they look like doing similarly to releases by more hyped bands like "Sex" and "Changing of the Seasons" but those two don't really span across right from Radio 1 to Kerrang like DB do.
