Showaddywaddy
I saw them last year at a 70s revival show & they stole the show, especially with Hey Rock & Roll. They had so many hits , a lot of them were top 5. I loved a lot of their stuff personally .They bring back memories of secondary school.

Leo Sayer
He wrote Giving it all away which was a hit in 1973 for Roger Daltrey before The Show Must go on was released. I liked One Man Band,Long Tall Glasses & How Much Love.I cant stop loving you ,Raining in my heart & When I need you were good ballads.

Status Quo... your opinion - good or bad?
Their live shows are absolutely brilliant .Down Down,Caroline,Rain,Roll over lay down,Rockin all over the world are all classics.Their cover of Wild Side of Life was a great version .I didnt like In the Army now .After 40+ years they still manage to sell out venues so they must be doing something right.

Chart Commentary by gooddelta: Sun 11/5/08
Great commentry as usual, always a great read. Just a couple of points ... Chuck Berry, Little Jimmy Osmond, The Sweet and Slade achieved this rare feat end of 1972 & start of 1973. Please dont't go is a cover of KC & The Sunshine Band's hit from 1979 which KWS covered in 1992.

Bands that eventually shortened their name
Easy Cure to The Cure Pogue Mahone to The Pogues I dont think REM have ever been called RAPID EYE MOVEMENT although they got their name from this acronym in a dictionary . We've Got a Fuzzbox and We're Gonna Use It to Fuzzbox

retro chart... march 73!
1 Donny Osmond - The Twelfth Of Never (not a bad cover , he didn't deserve the stick he got) 2 Slade - Cum On Feel The Noize (Black Country's finest, had same line up from 1966 to 1991,great song & entered at #1) 3 T Rex - 20th Century Boy (loved the start) 4 Cliff Richard - Power To All Our Friends (sing a long a Cliff) 5 Gilbert O'Sullivan - Get Down (Reminds me of Pans People dancing around dogs on TOTP,underated happy song) 6 The Detroit Emeralds - Feel The Need In Me (classic catchy philly sound, rerecorded in 1977) 7 Roberta Flack - Killing Me Softly With His Song (much better than Fugees version, need to turn volume up though to hear it) 8 Dawn featuring Tony Orlando - Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree (pure cheese happy sing a long pop) 9 Shirley Bassey - Never Never Never (one of her best) 10 Alice Cooper - Hello Hurray (good but not heard much since 1973) 11 Kenny - Heart Of Stone (singer must have had tight trousers on this one,Ramoner was a loner apparently) 12 Jimmy Helms - Gonna Make You An Offer You Can't Refuse (another singer with tight trousers later with London Beat) 13 Timmy Thomas - Why Can't We Live Together (pure soul) 14 The Faces - Cindy Incidentally (perfect rock pop tune that ends properly) 15 Cockerel Chorus - Nice One Cyril (lets not have another one) 16 David Cassidy - I'm A Clown / Some Kind Of Summer (liked both songs ) 17 The O'Jays - Love Train (another great philly classic , still sounds good at discos) 18 The New Seekers - Pinball Wizard / See Me Feel Me (Medley) -(ok at the time but Who much better) 19 The Jackson Five - Doctor My Eyes (J5 at their best , love it) 20 Roxy Music - Pyjamarama (boring) 21 Neil Sedaka - That's When The Music Takes Me (guilty pleasure , nice piano playing happy tune) 22 Dave Edmunds - Baby I Love You (used Phil Spectors wall of sound , big production ,like it) 23 Gladys Knight & The Pips - Look Of Love (great love song) 24 The Strawbs - Part Of The Union (umpah umpah sing along with an ending) 25 The Sweet - Blockbuster (my favourite from this chart , most underated rock band ever) 26 Little Jimmy Osmond - Long Haired Lover From Liverpool (another sing a long , always on Junior's choice) 27 The Partridge Family - Looking Through The Eyes Of Love (prefered this to original version ) 28 Mud - Crazy (great fun band, loved all their hits ,Les Gray RIP) 29 Focus - Sylvia (fantastic instrumental , also liked hocus pocus from this Dutch band) 30 Thin Lizzy - Whisky In The Jar (great guitar breaks but goes on a bit) 31 White Plains - Step Into A Dream (Butlins theme tune ?) 32 Blue Mink - By The Devil (preferred Randy) 33 Geordie - All Because Of You (great start to this one ,also liked Electric Lady) 34 Gary Glitter - Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah) - (was cool to like him at the time, shame you are not allowed to like the song because it was actually good) 35 Olivia Newton-John - Take Me Home Country Roads (nice sing along ,yeeehaaa) 36 Stevie Wonder - Superstition (still sounds great at discos , unique keyboard sound & voice, great drum start) 37 The Stylistics - Break Up To Make Up (sloppy c**p) 38 Val Doonican - Heaven Is My Woman's Love (never heard this from wooly jumper/cardigan man) 39 The Beach Boys - California Saga (never heard this either) 40 Judge Dread - Big Seven (funny at the time but no more)

retro chart... march 73!
I remember recording songs onto my reel to reel tape recorder from "dial a disc" . The number was 160. My mum and dad used to go mad at me if they realised I had been listening because of the phone bill!! Part of the Union was one of the songs I kept listening to so that I could get the following lyrics: Now I'm a union man Amazed at what I am I say what I think That the company stinks Yes I'm a union man. When we meet in the local hall I'll be voting with them all With a hell of a shout It's out brothers out And the rise of the factory's fall. Oh you don't get me I'm part of the union You don't get me I'm part of the union You don't get me I'm part of the union Till the day I die, till the day I die. As a union man I'm wise To the lies of the company spies And I don't get fooled By the factory rules 'Cause I always read between the lines. And I always get my way If I strike for higher pay When I show my card To the Scotland Yard This what I say. Oh you don't get me I'm part of the union You don't get me I'm part of the union You don't get me I'm part of the union Till the day I die, till the day I die. Before the union did appear My life was half as clear Now I've got the power To the working hour And every other day of the year. So though I'm a working man I can ruin the government's plan Though I'm not too hard The sight of my card Makes me some kind of superman. Oh you don't get me I'm part of the union You don't get me I'm part of the union You don't get me I'm part of the union Till the day I die, till the day I die.

BBC TV's The Rock N Roll Years
The series actually started from 1955 or 1956 and ended with 1980 originally when it was first shown around 1985-1987. It was repeated in the mid 90s and years 1981-1989 were added in. I have most of them (if not all) on video tape

TOTP 1978 Xmas Special
I enjoyed this too. Some of the biggest hits of the 70s (and all time) were all in this programme. Mull of Kintyre,You're the one that I want,Rivers of Babylon,Summer Nights,Mary's Boy Child .... As well as the naff ones like The Smurfs ,Brighouse & Rastrick Band and Brotherhood of man. Love Darts & Showaddywaddy.

Chasing cars equals chart record!
Just because they spent the same weeks in the charts you can't really compare the chart performance like for like though. Bare in mind that most of the weeks chasing cars has been in the charts is due to download sales which did not exist back in 1970/71.Still a great chart run though.

Chart For Week Up To 29/12/1973
This chart reminds me of when I bought my first radio cassette recorder for about £30 using my paper round money. There were some great songs out in Dec 73 in my opinion.

Chart commentary by gooddelta
This is an excellent review !!! Could Connie Talbot be a challenge for Leona this week in the album charts ? She's getting a fair bit of exposure at the moment (GMTV,Central News,Walsall lights switch on,etc) Somehow, I think a lot of copies will be bought for Christmas . There have been millions of hits on You Tube from all over the world.

X Factor pulls out of Xmas Number 1 race!?
