New Romantics
I would also add Heaven 17 & ABC to this list. The lead singers of new romantic bands were not the best singers in my opinion ,although the music was good. Simon Le Bon,Phil Oakey,Adam Ant & Marc Almond often sang flat live or on their records.

So was the 1970s the most important decade then?
I remember in 1973 someone brought into school a radio cassette recorder . Everyone surrounded him because they'd never seen one before. It was like something from another planet. Up till then , if you wanted to record songs you had to dangle a microphone over the TV , or put it right next to the radio or record player. Everyone in the room had to be asked to stay quiet while you were recording.

Karen Carpenter had a superb voice and their songs had some great harmonies. I've never felt bad admiting to liking their music ,even when aged 10 ,when Top of the World, Yesterday once more , etc were in the charts. Calling Occupants was my favourite of them all.

UK Chart Commentary from James Masterton 20/03/06
Even Everyhit.com seem to contradict themselves with these facts : "Lowest weekly sale for a no. 1 since at least 1960 is for Orson's 2006 track "No Tomorrow". It sold 17,694 on its third week in the chart to take it to the top spot (w/e 25th March 2005), beating the previoius record of 21,262 set by Presley's Jailhouse Rock reissue in Jan 2005. Lowest sale which enabled a track to enter at No. 1 is 20,463 for the the 2005 reissue of "One Night" / "I Got Stung" by Elvis Presley"
