Drama & Social Films
"Stray Dogs" is a Taiwanese-French production which was released in my country’s theaters three months ago. It was originally screened at the Venice Film Festival in 2013, where it won the "Grand Jury Prize". Even though we did not know much about this movie, we went to see it just for the honor of distinction. Although in my opinion, the Festival of Venice cannot be compared with anything, in value, to the equivalent of Cannes. A homeless alcoholic supports his two children, working as a man-sign in the streets of Taipei. They live in very poor conditions and have temporarily found a deserted space to sleep. A rainy day will make them move to another place and a lonely woman who works as a clerk in a supermarket will take them into her home. From that moment on, their lives will change for the better. When reading the synopsis, the first thing to realize is that it is a purely social film. However, the eccentric director / screenwriter Tsai Ming-liang made sure to test our patience and our nerves. From the beginning, the viewers figure out the extended takes/long shots, the dismal picture, the long silences and the minimal dialogues. With this specific story, Tsai Ming-liang emphasizes on the human misery that prevails in the Taiwanese capital, where people living on the margins, they scrape out an existence day by day. Despair is literally painted on the look of the protagonist who resorts to alcohol to forget his problems. And while up to a point, the film is seen tirelessly and lightly, having some very funny scenes, its last half hour was mildly unacceptable. The pace of the film fell even more since there was one long, static shot that lasted over 14 minutes. The plot became even weaker, while the interpretations reminded of us those in silent cinema. I honestly cannot understand how this particular film received positive reviews from the committee of the Venice Film Festival. As I should have suspected it, since "A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence" won the last year's "Golden Lion". Obviously, the committee of this festival prefers boring and tedious movies when occasionally, there are incredibly good films that go unnoticed. "Stray Dogs" is already one of my worst choices at the cinema. I made the mistake of choosing it based on its reputation in film circles. However, I do not want to be a victim in my life, I'll be more careful next time. The film definitely stands out from the other movies I saw this year on the big screen, but what can we do it when it stands out in a bad way? _xsQfTkvBwg

Drama & Social Films
I just opened this topic about drama films. I guess that it will not be popular as other genres but I think that these films totally deserve to have a place here. Besides, I think that we all love a little bit of drama.. :teresa: I will post my reviews here. My first will be "The Disappearance of Elinor Rigby: Her". "The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby" is a sentimental drama which was released in my country three months ago. Essentially, it consists of three films, "Him", "Her" and "Them", which separately shows each of the events of the story. "Him" and "Her" made their official premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival two years ago while "Them" was screened in the "Un Certain Regard" section at last year's Cannes Film Festival. All the versions won several good reviews and there were many who wrote positive words for the interpretation of the heroine Jessica Chastain. "The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby / Her" presents the events of the story through the perspective of the central heroine, Eleanor Rigby. After the tragic death of her child, Eleanor Rigby tries to commit suicide because she can't stand the loss of her child. She returns to her parent’s home and she continues her studies in the university to further her education. On the other hand, her husband works regularly in the restaurant and everyone pulls away separately. However, both are trying to redefine their relationship and find their old selves. The title of the film is purely symbolic. To be honest, I hadn't read the plot of the story, but I had seen the official trailer at least twice. You do not understand much from the beginning, since there are numerous scenes in which the protagonist of the film casually walked in the streets of New York. In addition, the second roles were indifferent and meaningless, except that of Viola Davis, while the evolution of the film had no climax. Periodically, the story had some flashbacks showing intimate moments of the couple. Ned Benson not only wrote the script of the film but also took over the directing. It is his first film since he has previously only dealt with short films. I think that it was a smart move, to turn the same story in three different versions, but I think the content was not the nicest. He could have done it with a more interesting script idea that would keep undiminished the interest of the viewer. However, his movie had nice interpretations from the two main actors (Jessica Chastain & James McAvoy) and the soundtrack was very good! "The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby" is definitely one of the most boring / lukewarm films I saw at the cinema in recent months. I might blame this on the fact that I did not see all the versions of the story so to have a comprehensive view. However, I feel that something was missing in its story and so I wasn't satisfied with the result. If it had more substantive dialogues and interesting characters, it could have made the difference but according to what I saw, it had little impact on me. Ca2yCZJqZoU

European Cinema 2013-2015
"Child's Pose" is a Romanian production that was released in my country’s theaters in October 2013. However, a neighborhood cinema chose to screen it three months ago and I seized the opportunity to watch it. "Child's Pose" made its official premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in 2013 and won the "Golden Bear" which is the biggest prize of the event! Moreover, it was the official participation of Romania for "Best Foreign Language Film" in the same year but unfortunately the American Film Academy preferred the incoherent "La Grande Bellezza". "Child's Pose" is a social-drama that shows the pathology and dependent relationship that a mother can have with her son. The main heroine of the story, Cornelius, is a wealthy woman who struggles to part with her son from her life. The latter will be embroiled in a fatal traffic accident, with a fourteen-year child as the victim, and his mother will do everything to save him from prison. Romanian Călin Peter Netzer not only directed the film but also wrote the script along with Răzvan Rădulescu. Netzer had a lot of close-ups on the faces of the actors because according to his notes, he wanted to convey to the audience all the emotions, concerns and conflicts of the characters of his film. He presents the facts of the story in such a way so that viewers understand or even feel empathy for both the mother and son as the film’s protagonists. "Child's Pose" had pretty good directing, very intriguing scenario, well-written dialogues and a remarkable soundtrack. The interpretation of the protagonist Luminiţa Gheorghiu was excellent and I do not think the total result of the film would have been as good, if producers or the director had chosen another actress. Also, the evolution didn’t tire us at all and I can say that the last scene was the strongest in the whole movie! I guess there were a few viewers who were not moved by the finale. "Child's Pose" is definitely one of the best European films I have seen in the cinema in recent years! It’s not one of the films that gather a lot of people in theaters but it’s one of those movies that spreads many social messages to viewers. It has received a pretty good score in IMDb (7,5) while the connoisseurs of cinematic space wrote the best comments for its content. I would highly recommend it! h_TGDRZkMgA

I watched the official trailer four days ago. It seems quite funny. Plus, the protagonist of the movie reminds me of an old friend. It had a pretty good openning weekend at the box office! 2MxnhBPoIx4

Lift Off- Furious 7
"Furious 7" is the new film of the successful series "The Fast and the Furious" which had its world premiere in early April. "Furious 7" is essentially the continuation of the story from "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift" which was released in cinemas in 2006. Although I have watched all the movies in the series, very few of them have had decent results. Despite this however, they did not differ much from each other since they had lots of action, fast and expensive cars and very beautiful chicks. The fighters of roads have built a very large audience over the years and I imagine that it is a reference point in discussions of fans all over the world. "Furious 7" had stunning scenes but in no case reminiscent of the original film, which remains even today a classic of its kind. However, the new movie was action packed. It has great visual effects, very loud sound effects but there was falsehood too. We watched one extravagant scene after another and the scenario was completely brainless. Also, it had tragic dialogues, old fashioned quotes which reminded of us the action movies of the 80's and 90's, miserable and emotionally clichéd interpretations that accompanied by an appropriate soundtrack each time. Of course, I cannot overlook the fact that producers spent millions of dollars on the overall budget, $190.000.000 to be precise, to get the most exciting film of the series. However, they managed to create a mindless action film that had a little bit of "Mission Impossible", a little bit of "James Bond", a little bit of "MacGyver" and a little bit of science fiction films. Only dinosaurs were missing to complete this visual monstrosity. I have always liked adventure films, but when they are far-fetched, they always end up very disappointing and silly. And the "Furious 7" was not an exception. The only positive thing that I found in the new movie was the last 5 minutes that was made exclusively for the tragedy that befell Paul Walker. It was undoubtedly the most emotional part of the whole series and I'm pretty sure this was appreciated by most viewers. I hope the next film is not as bad as was the new one, because it seems as the story progresses, it becomes even worse. However, I will think it through to go and watch it on the big screen. "Furious 7" was the biggest box office success of 2015 before Jurassic World was released in June! It made an impressive opening weekend worldwide and it has already managed to be the fifth more commercial movie of all time! I believe that none of the producers would have expected this huge success as the previous movies had not even touched the $800.000.000 mark. Although, I was disappointed by the overall result, IMDb users have a different view from me since "Furious 7 "has received a high rating from large sections of the public who voted for it. It has a current rating of 7.6. Something that I personally find it unacceptable when far superior films have been rated much lower. I guess that its hardcore fans easily gave a 10 without giving a full explanation about it.- Carly Rae Jepsen 'Run Away With Me'
I like the videoclip and the song is already one of my favourites this year! Carly Rae Jepsen is literally an oasis in the pop music industry.- The Babadook
"The Babadook" was released in my country’s theaters three months ago and it was definitely one of the movies that the domestic fans of horror films were eagerly waiting to see. "The Babadook" is an Australian production which is based on the award-winning short film "The Monster" (2005). It was originally aired in the prestigious Sundance Film Festival and received very positive reviews. The film also received three awards from the Australian Film and Television Academy, including "Best Film", "Best Director" and "Best Original Screenplay" and it was nominated in three categories in the latest Saturn Awards which are suggested for only science fiction, fantasy and horror. The central character of the story is Amelia, growing up alone with her six year old son Samuel, after her husband died in a car accident the day their child was born. Seven years later, in isolation from her social surroundings and disappointed with her life, her only human companionship is the untamed and restless Samuel. One day she will read a scary book called "The Babadook" to her son, which she found it by chance in her house. They will experience both very unpleasant consequences in the coming days. Jennifer Kent not only wrote the script of the film but she undertook the directing too. Essentially, it is her directorial debut on the big screen, as she had solely short films in her filmography and "The Monster" as I mentioned above was invented by her. However, she did it famously once she had a fairly limited budget at her disposal. Usually, large, small or independent movie studios avoid spending huge funds on horror movies and so most of these kinds of films do not exceed $10,000,000. Besides, after having decent earnings and taking advantage of this practice, why change it? "The Babadook" is no exception after making double the amount of money that was in its budget! Jennifer Kent created a very scary atmosphere and adding exceptional audio effects, she made a film that will be discussed for a long time. Moreover, "The Babadook" had tight editing, staggered suspense and the scenario was quite intriguing. The performances were good enough and the two central actors convinced the audience in the way that they portrayed their characters. It’s not random that there have been many times when we watched very good scary movies, but they had miserable interpretations. However, Samuel shrieked a lot of times during the movie even before the Babadook made its appearance and I guess that it would be quite annoying and unbearable to the viewers. "The Babadook" is one of the best psychological thrillers I've seen in recent years! It had a remarkable production with talented actors who have worked flawlessly and had a very good result. However, I cannot omit the fact that the last scene was a bit of a disappointment. It could have had a better ending. Despite this, the film is very good as a whole and it is quite different from the other movies of its kind which come out in great numbers in cinemas. If I saw it in my childhood, surely I could not sleep the following night.- Round 8: Taylor Swift- Least Favourite Single
