Cake
"Cake" is an American independent production which was released in my country over two months ago. Starring the original Greek actress, Jennifer Aniston, which was nominated for her performance by the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Having seen the official trailer a few months ago, I was absolutely sure that Aniston would make a difference with this movie. Indeed, this happened after she received the best reviews for her acting! Claire Bennett suffers from chronic pain and depression, after a car accident that killed her son and leaving scars on her face. Participating in a psychological support team, she will decide to know more about the life of a young woman who committed suicide recently. Jennifer Aniston is excellent in her role and I couldn’t help but wonder why she was not nominated by the Academy of Oscars. She gave a very special and moving interpretation which stands out from the other roles of her career. Hollywood shouldn’t choose her only in comedies, because it seems that this woman can play everything! Don’t forget that the same happened with Sandra Bullock for her performance in "Blind Side" six years ago. The rest of the cast consists of famous actors and I’ve picked out the interpretation of Mexican actress Andiana Barraza who along with Aniston was the best female duo of the last year. The director Daniel Barnz has done a pretty good job and the screenwriter Patrick Tobin wrote the original story. It’s a rare phenomenon nowadays. "Cake" had also elaborate montage, beautiful photography and cynical/smart dialogues. The role of Claire Bennett was quite caustic and I’m sure that many people would love this specific character. Also the director made sure to enrich the film with bright images so as not to create an unbearable situation for the viewer’s eye and the evolution of the movie had some pleasant moments despite being a predominantly dramatic story. "Cake" is not one of those movies that sold many tickets to the cinema. However, it is one of those movies which leave a bittersweet feeling to the audience when it finishes and you cannot forget them very easily. Having seen many films this past year, "Cake" is definitely one of my favorites and I think that the protagonist of the movie was totally robbed by the Committee of Oscar. I hope that Jennifer Aniston will give us many relevant performances in the near future!

Timbuktu
"Timbuktu" is a social film that takes place in the homonymous city of Mali. It was originally screened at last year's Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Golden Palm, but ultimately the grand prize went –unfairly- to the Turkish movie "Winter Sleep". Its title says it all. However, it won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury and the François Chalais Prize and caused a sensation with its content! Later, it was selected as the official proposal of Mauritania for the "Best Foreign Language Film" and finally it was chosen to be one of the five nominated films! Essentially, it was the first time that Mauritania participated in the Oscars and its selection in the largest American cinema institution. Only success can be considered! I waited for a long time for this movie to be released in my country, because I had never watched an African movie at the cinema and I was very curious about the result. The film is inspired by true events, though the script contains several fiction items regarding persons, dialogues, etc. The fanatical Islamists of ISIL have penetrated in the town Timbuktu and their violent behavior, forcing residents of the region to behave in accordance with Islamic law. They enforce the prohibition of music, laughing, smoking, and even football. In particular women are imposed even more restrictions. "Timbuktu" hasn't got exactly all the elements that characterize a movie as the movie refers more to documentaries, in my opinion. Furthermore, I have to say that it has some pretty harsh images likely to shock the viewers. The directing was simple but it had elaborate montage, magnificent photography and beautiful African melodies were heard during the plot. The Mauritanian Abderrahmane Sissako was not restricted to the directorial part of the film but he wrote the script along with Kessen Tall. "Timbuktu" is his second feature film after previously dealing with mainly documentaries and short films. Nevertheless, I think the scenario of "Timbuktu" was the weakest element of the film, because there was no cohesion in history and it looked like it had been connected to unrelated events together. Let alone, every sentence of the script contained the words "prophet" and "God" (Allah for them), to the point that cause us irritation. Of course, it was appropriate to reason, so that the viewers realize that in these areas there exists no logic after the invasion of jihadists. I’m not sure what impressed the jury of the Oscar, since there were much better foreign movies than "Timbuktu". However, its reputation was not confined only within borders of America, after having won seven César awards (The French Oscars), including that of "Best Film" in 2014! Perhaps the fact that it deals with a topical political issue and is presented in that realistic way, it played a key role to its global recognition. However, it is a film that does not make a difference because it could have had a more coherent story. Nevertheless, it received very positive reviews wherever it was screened and has received a nice score in IMDb (7,3). I would give a similar rate because it has great photography but it loses about its content. Surely, though it was one of the most remarkable productions I saw in the cinema in the last six months. - Inherent Vice
He could be with this talent..:P- Inherent Vice
"Inherent Vice" was released in my city's cinemas over two months ago. It was nominated for a Golden Globe in the category for "Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy" and was nominated for two Oscars, including "Best Adapted Screenplay" and "Best Costumes"! Although it did not win an award in these two events, it received mostly positive reviews for its good performances. Honestly, I had nowhere seen the official trailer anywhere, but reading a few lines for the plot, it seemed like it had quite an interesting script. Besides, it deals with a case of disappearance and this issue was at the forefront of openness in my country's TV news three months ago. "Inherent Vice" is based on the homonymous novel by Thomas Pynchon. It takes place in Los Angeles in the 60's and the central figure of the film is the private detective Larry "Doc" Sportello. The latter would undertake an unusual case of disappearancing, which concerns his ex-girlfriend and her new lover, and it will lead to dangerous and complex paths. While reading the plot, you are sure that you will see a mystery film, but "Inherent Vice" is far from the standards of the genre. The private detective Larry "Doc" Sportello, which happens to be a hippy, is a peculiar personality like most characters in the film. "Inherent Vice" contains many surreal scenes, which you can not be sure if they actually happen, since the protagonist is constantly stoned. However, the most typical and important component of the film were the countless and ceaseless dialogues and also many names that rang a bell in the movie, without knowing which was their role in the story. This result had an effect that tired us at times because we were trying to contain all these names but unfortunately the rapid evolution of the plot does not help us at all. I felt as if we participated in some experimental research without of course nobody informing us initially. Nevertheless, I can not say that I did not like what I saw in total since it had good directing, good enough interpretations, well-written dialogues and many funny scenes. Of course, some of them were coarsely but at least made us laugh many times in the movie theater. It is the most pleasant story of director/ screenwriter Paul Thomas Anderson, who previously has dealt only with social dramas and stories. Having seen most of the movies from his filmography, such as "Boogie Nights", "Magnolia", "Punch-Drunk Love" and "Master", I found that his performance is always descent. However, with "Inherent Vice", it made essentially the difference. I think that it is one of the most unique films I've ever seen in the last five years and it held my interest till the end. That being said, I will not ignore the fact that I had a headache with the seamless information. "Inherent Vice" was a very special film with positive and negative elements. It was not a commercial movie after failing to overcome its low budget ($20.000.000) and its total receipts are quite disapponting. However, it is a film about a very specific audience and certainly will disappoint a large portion of the unsuspecting viewers. For this reason, it has received an average score in IMDb of 6,8. Personally, it's not far from my own assessment. I'd say that it's a pretty crazy case of vanishing that requires every second of viewer's attention and patience, after it lasts 148 minutes.- Least Favourite Marvel Cinematic Universe: Round 4
Avengers: Age of Ultron! I watched it in the cinema yesterday. It was dreadful. I didn't expect it to be so bad..- One Direction | Least Fave Single Round 11
