Anomalisa
"Anomalisa" is a stop-motion animation that was released in limited theater circuits last February. It won the "Grand Jury Prize" at the 72nd Venice Film Festival and it was nominated for an Academy Award for "Best Animated Feature Film". Although I rarely see these particular kinds of films on the big screen, I was very curious about the content of "Anomalisa". However, I can not say that I was thrilled with the result when the end credits dropped. The central character of the story is Michael Stone, a successful writer of manuals dealing with customer management. However, he is aloof and cold and not in the mood for many conversations. When he makes a business trip to Cincinnati to speak to a conference on customer service, Stone will meet the shy and messy Lisa, which is a fan of him. Stone will fall in love with her and she unpurposely will make him change his attitude towards life. "Anomalisa" is a film that talks about the melancholy and loneliness experienced by modern people. They may have all the comforts and their way of life has improved in most things -always talking about the Western World- but they still feel isolated and find it difficult to communicate each other. Charlie Kaufman was the one who inspired the story, which was originally presented as a play in Los Angeles. He loved this piece of work so much that he undertook along with Duke Johnson to adapt it on the movie screen. "Anomalisa" had interesting directing, well-written dialogues and humor. However, the scenario had not given you food for thought and thought and the story ends somewhat abruptly. Additionally, female characters had male voice - except that of Lisa- and all this lead us to giggle during the whole course of the film. Despite this, it is quite unique and very "advanced" for a film of its kind. Anomalisa" is a nice story that will surely find the "special" - hipster- audience. Fortunately, it did not win the Oscar for "Best Animated Feauture Film" because it would be extremely unfair to the ingenious" Inside Out ". "Anomalisa " may received very positive comments from connoisseurs of cinematic space but it failed to attract many viewers in cinemas. It didn't cut many tickets worldwide and neither its nomination in Oscars was able to give it a box office boost. Even though I do not believe that released for purely commercial reasons."Anomalisa" is a film that I will not suggest you to go to the cinema. Only on DVD!

Room
"Room" is a drama that was released in the cinemas of my country in the beginning of February. "Room" is based on the homonymous novel by Emma Donoghue, which became a best seller in 2010! The film received rave reviews all over the world and it was nominated for four Golden Statuettes, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay! Reading a few lines about the film, I knew in advance that I would love this film. Indeed, this happened because "Room" was an incredibly moving film! The central characters of the story is Jack, a five year old boy, and his mom living in a 10 sq m/ft room. Jack has created an entire universe in this small space and mom deals with him all day. However, one day, his mom will make the decision to explain the real reason they are there and so, she will devise a plan to escape to the outside world. "Room" is based on a story that is full of emotions. It essentially emphasizes on the bonding between mother and child and it is presented in such an unprecedented way that it will touch everyone whether he/she has children or not. The director of the film, Lenny Abrahamson, did an excellent job and the writer of the novel, Emma Donoghue, also undertook the writing of the film's script. It seems that these two had absolute professional chemistry judging from the result. The protagonist of the film, Brie Larson, was shattering and she really deserved to win the coveted Oscar Award. She may not have special filmography to her credit but her interpretation in "Room" will give her a big boost in the near future. Moreover, the little Jacob Tremblay was tremendously talented since he gave a ground-breaking performance in an role that required great care and a lot of work. Along with Brie Larson were an unbeatable duo and there is no way not to love them watching them on the big screen. "Room" had imaginative directing, well-written script, great photography and beautiful soundtrak. Honestly, I can not find a disadvantage in this movie. "Room" is undoubtedly one of the best films I've seen in my life! The overall result is amazing and there is no way it will not elicit from you deep emotions with its shocking plot. It puzzled me enough in the end and it made me think a lot about many things until that moment I had not thought before. It is a movie worth seeing and I'm sure that it will become a classic over the years. 11/10

European Cinema 2013-2015
"Labyrinth of Lies" is a drama that was released in my country's cinemas in the middle of February! It is based on actual events and it was the official submission for Germany for the Academy Award for "Best Foreign Language Film". Although, it did not end up as one of the five nominated films, it received positive feedback for its content and it won the Audience Award at the 21st Athens International Film Festival - Opening Nights. Although I have no particular sympathy for the German people, I admit that they have very high quality of cinema since they have exceptional and incredible movies such as Lola rennt, Good Bye, Lenin !, Das Experiment, Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei, Das Leben der Anderen etc! "Labyrinth of Lies" takes place in Frankfurt in the late 50s. Nobody knows or does not speak about the events of the previous decade and everyone lives their lives as if nothing ever happened. However, a random occurrence will uncover the veil of silence and an ambitious young prosecutor, with the help of a journalist, they will begin an unprecedented survey of that era. "Labyrinth of Lies" is a remarkable production that is really worth seeing on the big screen. The Italian Giulio Ricciarelli wrote the script together with Elisabeth Bartel and he also made his directorial debut. "Labyrinth of Lies" had pretty good direction, a well-written script and beautiful photography. Moreover, the interpretations of the actors were very good and the protagonist of the film, Alexander Fehling, was astonishing in his role! It may be another film that deals with the Holocaust and the Second World War but it was shot in such a compelling way that it will surely pique your interest! Trust me! "Labyrinth of Lies" could not be included in the list of my favorite European movies ever! It's a great movie that will surely grab the attention of the public. The truth is that I felt a deep melancholy just when I stepped out of the movie theater, but it happened to me since the evolution of the plot affected me so much. It is really surprising the way that these European people buried their "recent" past and it was laid out in a such manner. I believe that only the Germans -and perhaps the Russians- would be able to do something like that. Despite this, this fact proves once again the scheming of these people. PS +++++ for the beautiful and classy German actress Friederike Becht! 6jGxe6auuTg

Deadpool
"Deadpool" is a comedy superhero film that was released in my country in the middle of February! The truth is that it was advertised enough by multiplex in the previous months and many movie sites wrote many articles for its content. Though, I was not very impressed by its official trailer, I wanted to see it on the big screen especially after the huge success of the American Box Office. "Deadpool" hit the top of our Box Office in its first weekend of release while its receipts far exceeded the other movies that weekend. "Deapool" is an unconventional super-hero film that came to shake the "still waters" of Marvel. The central character of the story is Wade Wilson, a former agent of the special forces and now mercenary, who learns that he has thyroid cancer and that the cancer evolves very quickly to his vital organs. Having no other choice, he will be submitted to a test for the sole purpose of a cure, abandoning his beloved Vanessa. However, those in charge of the experiment have other plans in mind and Wilson will end up deformed but he will also have the ability to heal very quickly. So, Wilson will adopt his alter ego Deadpool and he will search to find the person who destroyed his life. Besides, he will try to approach Vanessa but every time he will hesitate because he is no longer the one she loves. "Deadpool" is an incredible movie that will surely fascinate the mature audience of Marvel. It combines adventure with caustic and coarse humor and the protagonist of the film, Ryan Reynolds, is enjoyable in his role. He's f***in' awesome! "Deadpool" had stunning visual effects, great film editing, brilliant dialogues and very funny characters. The best friend of Deadpool is undoubtedly one of the best comic characters of recent years! Tim Miller did an excellent job even though it was his first directorial job while the two screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick had crazy inspiration writing the story of the movie! Deadpool is seen pleasantly from beginning to end and it contains all the elements that will delight fans. It is one of the few films that made me laugh so much although the hero initially experiencing a very dramatic situation. However, this does not mean that it is not moving because there were times in the first hour mainly that touched the chord of viewers. Deadpool is already one of my favorite movies ever! He is amazing, he has genius humor, he has a dig at everyone and he is not compatible with anything (something like me :)). It made an impressive opening at the American Box Office and broke the three-day record for the month of February ever! It has received very positive reviews from critics and it has assembled a high rating of 8,1 on IMDb by its users. I honestly did not expect to like it so much and I'm already looking forward to the sequel. I wish it is a dope film like the one I saw! PS On the positive side of Deadpool: the sexy Morena Baccarin is the most intriguing love interest of any super hero.

'The Boy'
"The Boy" is a horror film that premiered in my country's cinemas in the last days of January. "The Boy" was displayed for many consecutive weeks and it was very successful at the domestic Box Office! The Greek public always prefers the creepy stories judging by the total receipts of these films. However, in this case it seemed that world of mouth played a catatlytic role because the movie was released during the Oscar Season and the competition was very strong. The film develops in a mansion located in a secluded area of the English province. An American babysitter will go to get a job there but she will discover a surprise. That surprise is that the 8-year old child in the family, called Brahms, is a porcelain doll. While initially it would seem the whole situation strange and funny, she will undertake the "custody" of the doll in order to escape from her dark past. When the elderly parents of Brahms leave for vacations, Greta will stay completely all alone with the doll. However, the acquaintance with Malcolm, the lad who delivers food at home, will play a key role as he will give her valuable information about this curious case. In the meantime, however, both of them will witness mysterious events. "The Boy" is based on a clever script idea -you realize it only if you see the movie- that keeps your interest from beginning to end. It had atmospheric directing, elaborate montage and jumpscares scenes. Stacey Menear wrote the script of the film while William Brent Bell was the one who was carrying it on the big screen. The protagonist of the film is the beautiful Lauren Cohan, who was very convincing in her role while quite good was her co-star, Rupert Evans. "The Boy" is definitely one of the best horror movies I've seen in recent years. It was not too scary but it was so well filmed that you can not understand what is happening inside the house. Frankly I was thrilled with the development of its plot and I would highly recommend it to everyone. Although it did not win the best reviews, the film managed to have very satisfactory earnings in the Worldwide Box Office!

Drama & Social Films
"Trumbo" is a biographical movie that was shown in my country's cinemas during February. It is based on the biography "Dalton Trumbo" by American author and journalist Bruce Alexander Cook. I knew absolutely nothing about this particular personality although he was one of the biggest names in Hollywood at that time. Dalton Trumbo was one of the most acclaimed writers of his generation, winning twice the Academy Award for “Best Screenplay” for "Roman Holiday" and "The Brave One". The film takes place during the 1940's. Dalton Trumbo is already a successful author / screenwriter and he lives with his family in harmony in a suburb of Hollywood. However, when the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) invites him to testify along with other nine scriptwriters for their political beliefs, Trumbo will refuse to give explanations thus lead to prison. When he serves his imprisonment for several months, he will face the refusal of the Big Studios to hire him again as screenwriter while his colleagues and friends will shun him constantly. "Trumbo" is a fascinating biographical film which is presented in the best way on the big screen. Jay Roach took over the directing of the film and John McNamara wrote the script. Both emphasized on the events that occurred in 1947, when Trumbo was persecuted for his radical beliefs. Do not forget that at that time, the Americans had very bad relations with the Soviets and there was always the fear of the Second Red Scare. "Trumbo" had remarkable directing, clever dialogues, caustic humor and beautiful photography. However, the biggest advantage of the film is undoubtedly the flawless interpretation of Bryan Cranston in the leading role. Cranston gave us one of the best performances of last year and for this reason he was proposed in famous film organizations, such as Oscars, Baftas, Golden Globes etc. Equally appalling was Helen Mirren who impersonated the cantankerous, anti-Communist, gossip columnist Hedda Hopper. The remaining performances were good and the film is seen pleasantly throughout its duration. "Trumbo" is certainly one of the most interesting biographies that I have seen in recent years! It has been well received by critics and it has amassed a quite good rating of 7,5 by IMDb users. Despite this, the overall revenues were quite low and it did not fare well either in my country's Box Office. Which I think is very unfair considering the great result of the film. "Trumbo" spreads many messages to viewers and let us to get to know better a charismatic personality who went against the Establishment of that time. _HnZq6ZiieM

European Cinema 2013-2015
"The Brand New Testament" is a surreal comedy which premiered in Greek cinemas during the last days of January. It initially took part in the "Directors' Fortnight" at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival and then participated in other recognized film festivals. "The Brand New Testament" was the official submission by Belgium for the Academy Awards 2016 for “Best Foreign Language Film" and although it did not reach the final five nominations, it was one of the films which received very positive feedback. I had not seen the official trailer, but having watched very notable films from this country in the last five years such as Our Children, The Broken Circle Breakdown, Two Days, One Night, there was no way to ignore this film on the big screen. They know how to make a great movie! "The Brand New Testament" evolves in Brussels, which shows us God living with his family in an apartment like a normal person. However, it's not like we know through religious books who God really acts, since God does not really torment people's lives through commands typed on his computer. His daughter, Ea, will be the one who will try to change this situation, rewriting the New Testament with the help of six apostles. The "Brand New Testament" is based on an original script idea that aims to criticize religions. The Belgian Jaco Van Dormael gave all of himself in this project, since he took over the directing of the film, he wrote the script together with Thomas Gunzig and he participated in the production together with Frank Van Passel. He made a remarkable cinematic work that won critics and committees and as a result, the movie was proposed for a Golden Globe for "Best Foreign Language Film". "The Brand New Testament" had inventive directing, sarcastic script and very beautiful images. The interpretations of the actors were nice and the dialogues were causing plenty of laughter. Despite this, the rates fell sharply in the second part of the film -the cinema hall did an intermission- and its plot turned out to be repetitive and tedious. "The Brand New Testament" is an interesting idea script spreads many messages to the audience. However, I could not, in any case, compare it with older Belgian nominations (three mentioned above). While the director / screenwriter Jaco Van Dormael began with a very clever way to present the story of his movie, somewhere in the middle, he lost his best and the plot ended up in repeating cliches. In my opinion, "The Brand New Testament" could have been one of the "Best European Films" in recent years, if it had a more subtle ending. Though, according to all that negatives occurring at times in our lives, God must troll us very badly. If he exists. w5QNKcwe_lM

European Cinema 2013-2015
"Rams" is a drama that was released in my country's cinemas in the middle of January. "Rams" caught the attention of critics and the public at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, winning the Best Film in the "Un Certain Regard” section. In my country, it premiered at the 56th Thessaloniki International Film Festival, where it won the "Best feature film-Golden Alexander award"! Moreover, it excelled in many other film festivals and it was the official submission of Iceland for the Oscar nomination for "Best Foreign Language Film"! It was the first time I watched a film from this country and for this reason I was very curious about its overall impact. "Rams" takes in the pastures of northern Iceland. There, two brothers, Gummi and Kiddi, are rearing their sheeps and rams, without talking to each other. They have not communicated in more than 40 years even though they share the same land and their homes are within walking distance. However, an unavoidable fact will push them to cooperate in order to protect their "fortune". Although, this is a dramatic story, "Rams" had some very funny scenes which had as a consequence to create a pleasant atmosphere inside the movie theater. The Icelandic Grímur Hákonarson was the one who inspired this original story and his talent was not only limited in writing. Hákonarson also undertook the directing and created a film that pays attention to the relationship between brothers and the bond that develops among rural people with their animals. "Rams" was well directed, it had clever script and beautiful photography. The performances of the two protagonists were quite good while their characters were very nice. The only disadvantage was that its story evolved slowly, something that may strain the average viewer. Yet, it is a very special film that will surely find the audience which will love it. "Rams" is a fairly interesting script idea which was highly appreciated by the connoisseurs of cinematic space. It spreads many messages with its plot and the last scene was incredibly touching! Finally, it is a remarkable European productions representing Iceland worldwide in the best possible way! SADRDD38zts

The Revenant
"The Revenant" was the most talked about film on social media during Oscar Season! It was nominated in 12 categories at this year's Oscars and it won three Golden Globes such as Best Motion Picture - Drama, Best Director and Best Actor - Drama! "The Revenant” had arguably the best official trailer for 2015, which was played largely by the theaters and on television. It hit comfortably on top of the domestic Box Office and it remains in first place for four consecutive weeks! "The Revenant" is inspired by true events that happened in America in the 19th century. The central character of the story is the hunter Hugh Glass, who is abandoned, while seriously injured, by two members of his group, since previously one of them, John Fitzgerald, killed his son in front of his eyes. From that point on, Hugh Glass begins a merciless chase in order to avenge the murderer of his child. “The Revenant" is essentially a revenge movie unfolding in vast expanses of the North American land. The Mexican Alejandro G. Iñárritu did not only take over the director's chair but he also wrote the script along with Mark L. Smith. Iñárritu did an excellent job and I think it far exceeded all his previous films. "The Revenant" had great directing, flawless cinematography, tight editing, loud sound effects and captivating photography. Furthermore, the interpretation of Leonardo Di Caprio is among the best in this decade after what he suffered and went through in this particular movie. It is one of the few films that are not based on dialogues -remember his verbose character in "The Wolf of Wall Street-, but Di Caprio managed a unique way to pull out the most demanding role of his career. Also, the interpretation of Tom Hardy in the role of the bad guy was very convincing, proving that this actor can win the audience with every character. Whether it's good or bad. "The Revenant" was one of the most shocking films I've ever seen on the big screen in recent years and it deserved to win many Golden Statuettes! I believe that it is that film which will always represent 2015 with the passage of time! It is seen with undiminished interest from beginning to end while the snowy scenery is an eye catcher! It has been loved by the audience and critics and it has acquired a high average score of 8,1 in IMDb. "The Revenant" is a film that deserves to be enjoyed only in the cinema screen and anywhere else!

The Danish Girl
"The Danish Girl" is a period drama that premiered in my country's cinemas in the last days of January. It originally participated in the 72nd Venice International Film Festival and although it did not win the Golden Lion, it left a very good impression on the public and critics. Even though the main characters of the story were real, the movie is based on the novel of David Ebershoff which was taken from reality. "The Danish Girl" captured enough of the attention of the media because of its daring content but it was also quite discussed on the domestic film sites. Even “clogs” -a greek slang- had a view about this special film. The film takes place in Copenhagen during the 1920s. The central character of the story is the painter Einar Wegener, who is married to painter Gerda Wegener. When the latter asks him to pose as a woman in order to replace her model, who was absent that day, Einar Wegener will do it for her, but he will identify with the role and he will start to discover his new self. "The Danish Girl" is a touching story that aims to show to the public, a man who comes up against the taboos of that time but also to himself. The British director Tom Hooper made a very valuable work and the film's protagonist, Eddie Redmayne, literally gave a deeply captivating interpretation! He was shocking as Lili Elbe / Einar Wegener while his expressions showed how much he took on his character. I strongly believe that no other actor could not have portrayed this iconic figure, without appearing as a caricature on the screen. Eddie Redmayne understood the demanding role and he presented the character in such a masterly way. Moreover, the Swedish co-star, Alicia Vikander, was excellent as Gerda Wegener and she was worthy to stand by Redmayne's side. "The Danish Girl" had beautiful photography, great cinematography, magnificent costumes and remarkable soundtrack by Alexandre Desplat. It's a film that is seen pleasantly throughout its course and it's really worth watching. "The Danish Girl" competed for four Gold Statuettes such as "Best Actor", "Best Supporting Actress", "Best Costume Design" and "Best Production Design" in the last Oscar Ceremony, in which only Alicia Vikander was the big winner! It is one of the most important productions of last year and it rightly received very positive comments from the connoisseurs of the cinematic space. Despite this, it hasn't amassed a high average score by IMDb users, indicating that a large proportion of the public could not understand the content of this story. If they had really watched it.

Secret in Their Eyes
"Secret in their Eyes" is a police thriller that made its official premiere in the cinemas of my country in the middle of January! It is the remake of the homonymous Argentinean film, which won the Golden Statuette for "Best Foreign Language Film" in 2009! The American version is composed of a brilliant cast, including Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman and Chiwetel Ejiofor and it was released in the U.S. during the Oscar season. I had seen the original film in an open air cinema in July 2010, but to be honest, I did not remember too much about its content. So I was very curious about the result of the new version without having to go into the comparison process between the two films. "Secret in their Eyes" is a revenge story, which focuses on the murder of a young girl. The killer had been arrested after his criminal act and the case had been closed for a long time. However, the detective who originally was in charge of it, will return to the crime scene to collect new data in order to find the culprit. "Secret in their Eyes" is a pretty good movie with lots of mystery and suspense. The American Bill Ray not only wrote the screenplay but he was also responsible for the directing. Although the film starts very slowly, from a point on the hypothesis acquires a lot of tension and many twists. The interpretations of the three main actors were very good and their selection was very apt from the film's producers. "Secret in Their Eyes" had interesting directorial style, well-written dialogues and nice music. Despite this, several consecutive flashbacks, perhaps, may cause some confusion and tire large portions of the viewers. You could not be sure if each scene unfolded in the past or at the present stage of the story. "Secret in their Eyes" is based on the novel "La Pregunta de sus ojos" by the Argentine writer Eduardo Sacheri. With this cast, we would expect that this would be a commercial film but unfortunately its total receipts were very lukewarm worldwide. With this result, it probably played a catalytic role the inevitable comparison with the original film. There were many user comments below its official trailer of the film on YOUTUBE, which encouraged the potential audience to ignore the American remake and prefer the original film. Moreover, as were the comments of critics. Though, personally I liked the new film and I would mainly recommend to all those who love crime stories.

The Hateful Eight
"The Hateful Eight" is the latest film by talented director Quentin Tarantino, which was released in my country in January! It won several awards from various American critics associations and it was nominated in three categories for an Oscar Award, including Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Score and Best Cinematography. Despite this, there were many who reported its absence from some major Oscar categories including "Best Original Screenplay" and "Best Director". Having seen most of Tarantino films either in the cinema or on DVD, I can say that he is a charismatic creator with many fans all over the world! However, in my opinion, none of his film cannot surpass the greatness of "Kill Bill"! Perhaps the best revenge movie ever! "The Hateful Eight" takes place some years after the American Civil War. A bounty hunter, John Ruth, has captured a dangerous woman, Daisy Domergue, and brings her to the city of Red Rock for a trial. On their way they will encounter two strangers, Major Marquis Warren, who is a notorious black bounty hunter and Chris Mannix, who claims to be the new sheriff in town. All of them will end up on the isolated Minnie's Haberdashery, in which they will meet four strangers. As the hours pass, their chances of staying alive will go down. "The Hateful Eight" is a Western mystery film, in which those elements are not missing at all that characterize of Tarantino movies. It had abundant violence, particularly strong language, several splatter scenes and caustic humor. The film is divided into 6 chapters and the bulk of the story takes place within a room. "The Hateful Eight" had an intelligent and well-written script, great directing and orchestrated soundtrack from the maximum Ennio Morricone. The cast consists of famous and renowned actors and actresses and most characters of the film were highly structured. However, its plot reminded me of -at times- "Identity", as I did not like the way that the story came to the end. I would expect something more subversive for a Tarantino film. Last but not least, "The Hateful Eight" talks about racial separation, friendship, justice and betrayal. "The Hateful Eight" is certainly one of the most remarkable productions of last year! Although its overall duration lasts 168 minutes, it is seen pleasantly and it did not tire us at any point. It has received very positive feedback from the audience and critics and it has acquired a high average score of 7,9 by IMDb users. In my personal opinion, it was rightly not selected in the main categories of Academy Awards because it didn't make the difference with its course and its content. However, it is a film that deserves to watch it sometime in your life.
