Child 44
I saw the official trailer before I watched "Chappie" four days ago. It looks very promising movie. "Child 44" is a mystery thriller based on the homonymous novel of Tom Rob Smith. The cast consists of talented actors like Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Noomi Rapace and Vincent Cassel. ZgRt4VHIVPw

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation
I'm a big fan of Mission Impossible series and I have watched all the movies so far. My favourite is "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol"! I also loved the first film. In my opinion, the worst part of the series is "Mission: Impossible II" but the ending scene was amazing!!! The new movie is scheduled to be released on July 31, 2015. gOW_azQbOjw

'The Theory of Everything' | Stephen Hawking biopic
"The Theory of Everything" is undoubtedly one of the most hyped films of the last three months. It is based on the life of the theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking in accordance with the "Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen" which was written by his first wife Jane Wilde Hawking. The film received very good reviews worldwide and it won numerous awards at many festivals. It won two Golden Globes, including in the "Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama" and "Best Original Score", three Bafta awards, including "Best British Film", "Best Actor in a Leading Role" and "Best Adapted Screenplay", and won one Academy award in "Best Actor" category! It was released in my country two months ago and it hit the top spot in the Greek Box Office! The film begins with the student years of Stephen Hawking at Cambridge University and his encounter with his first wife before he is diagnosed with motor neuron disease. Then, it continues with his married life and his acceptance by the scientific world as the disease was at an advanced stage and concludes with his global recognition. Do not expect to see the scientific work of Stephen Hawking on the cinema screen. "The Theory of Eveything" is based on his personal life while his scientific work comes second. It is a powerful story in which its evolution causes a great deal of emotions for the audience. It also helps you to appreciate Stephen Hawking in a personal way. The directing of James Marsh is quite good, the script is interesting and the performances are those that literally steal the show. Eddie Redmayne is staggering in his interesting role of a very special man. He is thoroughly convincing. However, I found his interpretation exceptional as imitation and for this reason I wouldn’t have given him the award for "Best Actor". I think that this has happened a lot of times in recent decades and it would be better if the interpretations would be based on literary characters not compete with those based on imitations of real character. There should have been a separate category for these types of performances. However, this does not diminish in any way the value of the interpretation of Eddie Redmayne. Felicity Jones was also very good in her role and therefore was nominated for the Golden Globes and the Bafta. She was also appreciated by the American Academy Awards although she didn’t have a chance of winning but her performance in "The Theory of Everything" will surely play an important role in her subsequent career. Last but not least, the film had also beautiful photography, elaborate montage and remarkable soundtrack. The only disadvantage is that the rate of the movie dropped somewhat after the second half of the film but I wouldn’t say that it was dull in its whole duration. "The Theory of Everything" is definitely one of the greatest artistic achievements of this past year! I would prefer of course the film to be based mainly on a constant supply of Stephen Hawking as a theoretical physicists and cosmologist. However, for this, there are several documentaries about them. It has been loved by many viewers all around the world and it has received a high average score in IMDb (7,8). Furthermore, its total receipts are fairly good compared to its low budget. The multiple nominations by the Bafta and the Oscar led its total earnings, something that certainly did not have the same impact on other proposed movies. However, I believe that a very large number of tickets came from the fans of Stephen Hawking, how is one of the most intelligent and talented people in the world!

'Birdman' • 1st January 2015
"Birdman" is an independent American production and along with "Grand Budapest Hotel" received the most nominations at the Oscars awards, which were 9 in total! Both of them had four winnings. "Birdman" had similar success at the Bafta Awards after receiving a total of ten nominations despite managing to win only the "Best Cinematography" category. It was also popular at the Golden Globes where it was nominated in 7 categories and won two of them, including "Best Actor - Motion Picture Musical or Comedy" and "Best Screenplay". As you can see, "Birdman" is one of the few films in cinema history where the reputation gained for its multiple nominations, overshadowed the whole movie. I’m sure that the majority of viewers went to watch it because they had heard so much on television and on print / electronic media in the past three months. To be honest, its script didn't convince me at all before this recognition and I was not crazy about it. "Birdman" is not an action movie with the homonymous super hero but it's a black comedy/drama that has to do with a decadent actor, who is trying to get back on track with a play on Broadway. Essentially, "Birdman" is a film that concerns mainly actors and built with them in mind. It has to do with their agonies, their anxieties, their frustrations and their aspirations too. The film has caustic dialogues, funny scenes, very good performances from around the cast and well-written script. However, some parts of the lengthy dialogues are characterized by incessant chatter and maybe this tired a lot of viewers. Nevertheless, "Birdman" stands out enough for the originality of the script. That's why it won the Golden Statuette for "Best Original Screenplay". I cannot say that I love the story nor moved to the inner struggle of the protagonist. I would separate it into two equal parts after the movie theater had a break. In the first half hour, I didn't like it much and I was wondering why this film garnered positive reviews from movie experts since all seemed so meaningless and incoherent. However, the second part of the film gained more depth and meaning and interpretations became even better. Resounding case was that of Michael Keaton as in the second part, he gives his best! Besides, Edward Norton was very good in his role who caused us laughter with his character. He definitely was one of the most delightful characters of the last year. On the other hand, Emma Stone was quite nice but in no case should she have been nominated for "Best Supporting Actress". The same happened with the nomination of Meryl Streep in "Into the Woods" and I imagine that they were proposed because of non-existent competition. I also found the directing somewhat frustrating and exhausting almost all over the course because Innaritu made very close-ups on the faces of the actors and limited enough the range of the image. Having seen his oldest movies like "21 Grams", "Babel" and "Biutiful", I would say that he is one of the most important directors/writers of his generation. Especially, his total work on "Babel" was excellent and it should have won "Best Picture" in 2006. However, I don't believe the same for "Birdman" although it was the biggest winner at this year Oscar's. It won the two significant categories "Best Director" and "Best Picture" while many people expected "Boyhood" to steal the show. Additionally, the filming of Emmanuel Lubezki was quite remarkable and aptly suggested by the American Academy. Finally, Lubezki won the category of "Best Cinematography". "Birdman" is not one of the best movies I've seen in the last year because I think it refers to a very specific audience. It could easily have been a theatrical production and as a film, it does not offer you many things. However, it is a noteworthy independent production that convinced the American Film Academy. I'm not entirely sure if it's worth all its nominations which it was proposed for but both men's performances were very good. Especially, Michael Keaton gives his best performance to date! Nonetheless, I was a little bit disappointed about the fact that it won the Golden Statuette for "Best Picture" because I feel that it’s one of the most unjust awards in this category ever.

European Cinema 2013-2015
I decided to open this topic about European movies. I watch many of them and I think that it wouldn't be great to open different threads for every single one of them. So, I will exclude the official submissions for "Best Foreign Language Film" and I will add less popular/succesful movies here. My first movie will be "Suzanne"! "Suzanne" is a French social film which was released in my country's cinemas last May. Although it was selected in several downtown theaters, it did not initiate our interest to go and see it at that time, because the big blockbusters had begun to make their appearances. However, a neighborhood cinema selected it over one month ago and Suzanne was a good alternative choice for that time. Last year, it was nominated for five awards César (French Oscar) from which it won the award for "Best Supporting Actress" (Adèle Haenel). Suzanne, along with her younger sister, grows up with their widower father and they face many difficulties of life during their childhood. Then Suzanne gets pregnant in her teens, and from there onward, things get even more difficult for her. However, Suzanne is not a person who thinks with logic and unfortunately – for her – the emotion plays a decisive role in her life. Her acquaintance with a rogue will make her leave everything back. To be honest, I hadn't read reviews and I did not even know what was the story of the film, so Suzanne was actual a "Kinder Surprise" for us. I wouldn't say that its evolution was boring although the pace was not fast at all. It is the first French film I see where the dialogues were not loquacious and contiguous. There were many pauses while the faces of the actors were seemed in deep melancholy. Although the film is particularly dramatic, there were neither tears nor hysteria during the plot. The performances were good enough from the three main actors and their characters looked pretty nice. Nevertheless, the writers Mariette Désert and Katell Quillévéré did not develop the characters as they should have had and for this reason we could not understand why Suzanne behaved in this way. Besides writing the script, Katell Quillévéré undertook directing and she could have given us at least visually more information on the role of the protagonist. Conversely, however, she preferred to present inexpressible Suzanne almost all over the course of the film, with less emotional outbursts. I have noticed that there is always something missing in movies that are directed by women while they could have been very good overall. This happened to Suzanne too, as we watched the life of a disorderly young woman without understanding her mentality. I guess that her story seemed a bit meaningless to most viewers. "Suzanne" won the Special Jury Award - Silver Alexander at the 54th Thessaloniki International Film Festival. Also, the film won in the same festival the "Actress Award" for Sarah Forestie and the Artistic Achievement Award for the actor Francois Damian. Though, the film was not commercial in Greek theaters and it even failed to enter the Top 150 of film successes for 2014. Maybe, the promotion wasn't very good by the distribution company or maybe viewers didn't care for the script because French films usually perform well in my country. However, it seems that neither the users of IMDb were touched by the life of Suzanne, therefore it did not receive a high average score (6.8). Although it is not the best French films I've seen, Suzanne is seen pleasantly because of the alternative cinematic character of the protagonist. uFATdEHeTfA

Mr. Turner
"Mr. Turner" is the latest film of the recognized worldwide director / screenwriter Mike Leigh. "Mr. Turner" was originally screened at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival which competed for the "Golden Palm". Although it did not win the biggest prize of the festival, the leading star Timothy Spall won the award for "Best Actor" and cinematographer Dick Pope won the Vulcan Award that is given for best cinematography. In addition, it was nominated for four Baftas, including "Best Cinematography", "Best Production Design", "Best Costume Design" and "Best Makeup & Hair" and proposed by the Academy Awards for "Best Cinematography", "Best Costume Design", "Best Original Score "and "Best Production Design ". The only thing that worried me about this film was that it was too long, 2 ½ hours, but finally it was not as boring as I expected. The film is based on the life of British painter William Turner during the last 23 years, 1828-1851. William Turner was a Romantic landscape painter and his style is said to have set the foundation for Impressionism. Do not expect to see something extraordinary regarding the script of the film. William Turner was a very peculiar character, who did not recognize his own children and struggled to enter into long-term relationships. However, his contribution is very important in the art world and Mike Leigh mainly focused on it. I would like to note that the film has the best photography and best cinematography in recent years! Each scene gave you the impression that it could be a painting and the exterior shots of the movie were totally fantastic. Mike Leigh did an excellent job and I wonder why they didn't nominate him for the "Best Director" at the Academy Awards. "Mr. Turner" is one of those films that immediately capture the viewers' eyes with this visual masterpiece! Also, it had a well-written script, gorgeous scenery, amazing costumes and remarkable soundtrack. The interpretation of starring Timothy Spall was among the best of last year and there were many who pointed his absence from the Oscars. He was amazing in his role although he looked like a caricature. Nevertheless, the film had a slow and steady pace and perhaps this tired some viewers. Personally, I was yawning in some parts although I liked it quite a lot. "Mr. Tuner" was definitely one of the best productions of last year and therefore excelled at many festivals. It received very good reviews after connoisseurs of world cinema wrote the best comments about its content. While many viewers may not know about the contribution and work of this man in the art world, this film gives you the opportunity to know him through the eyes of director Mike Leigh. I'm sure the fans of his paintings will be enchanted by the specific movie! Tn4zSR_5ioI

I love all of them but I voted- Force Majeure
"Force Majeure" was the Swedish entry for the "Best Foreign Language Film" at the 87th Academy Awards! Although it made the January shortlist, it didn’t manage to be one of the five nominations for the Golden Statuette. However, "Force Majeure" won the jury prize in the competition section "Un Certain Regard" at last year's Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for "Best Foreign Language Film" at the Golden Globes where it lost to the Russian film "Leviathan". Since my childhood, I have had a great love for Sweden. So, there was no way to lose "Force Majeure" on the big screen. I can not say that I'm aware of Swedish cinema, but I can say with confidence that "A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence" was the worst and most boring movie I watched in the cinema last year! So, I was coy about the content of "Force Majeure" although I had heard very positive comments from a famous Greek film critic. The movie presents a brief family vacation of four Swedes, who have gone to the French Alps for skiing and spending time in a luxury hotel complex. On the second day of their stay, they will be confronted with an uncontrolled avalanche while they are having lunch on the roof of the hotel and the father panics and runs away from his family. When he returns back, his wife will be disappointed about his reaction which causes her doubts and emotionally deadlocks about their relationship. "Force Majeure" has very good directing, original screenplay, well-written dialogues and amazing photography! The Swedish director Ruben Östlund was not restricted to the visual part of the film but he also wrote the script. I was really impressed in some scenes as most outdoor shootings were captivated and the white backdrop of the film was magnificent. The performances were good enough from the two main actors although the crying of protagonist Johannes Bah Kuhnke before the end, sounded quite exaggerated and tragicomic. However, the film has all the elements that always feature the remarkable productions. "Force Majeure" is full of symbolism, profound messages and ethical dilemmas between the leading pair and the development of the plot is very interesting without tiring us. Essentially, "Force Majeure" deals aptly with the biggest fear of human beings, which is none other than death. "Force Majeure" is definitely one of the best Scandinavian movies I've seen so far. It received very good reviews from experts in the film industry and was nominated in many recognizable festivals! It has amassed a high score on IMDb (7,5) and it distinguishes from other European productions of last year. Personally, I would give much more because it is a film that you can hardly forget through the years and it is one of the movies that you sit and discuss with your friends for a long time after leaving the movie theater. tZZhB6AUo9k- Belle
The Greeks distributors delayed enough to release "Belle" in domestic cinemas. "Belle" was originally screened in the Toronto International Film Festival 2013 and it was officially released in U.S.A and U.K last year in May and June respectively. However, the Greek audience had the opportunity to watch it one month ago. "Belle" could have been nominated by the Academy Awards for many and various reasons. It seemed that it didn't quite touch the committee so that it would be a candidate even in one of the proposed categories. The same happened with Bafta and eventually I wonder if I'm the only one who found it as one of the best productions of last year. "Belle" is based on true events although the scenario is a fictional product. The main character of the story is Dido Elizabeth Belle who grew up at Kenwood House with her uncle William Murray and his wife Elizabeth after the encouragement of her father. Her uncle was the Lord Chief Justice. Of course, she was raised with all the taboos and prejudices that existed at that time for black people and socially inferior although she faced the same discrimination by some of her relatives. However, her acquaintance with a young ambitious lawyer was decisive for doubting the crisis of her uncle on the social issues of that period. Although "Belle" could be considered by some viewers as a romantic period drama, it deals with too many ethical questions. It has to do with the equality of all people of every color, gender and economic status, with racism and social exclusion and with selfless love. It is a film with substance and content, although that could unintentionally mislead some people because the official trailer and its title. The film has pretty good directing, well written dialogues, very good performances, beautiful photography and stunning costumes. It is a remarkable production that I will rank it as one of the best of its kind. The beautiful and rising star of the film Gugu Mbatha-Raw was the best possible choice for the role of Dido Elizabeth Belle. She could have had a nomination for the Oscars or Bafta since there were many critics who wrote positive comments about her performance. I can say that I was impressed by her facial expressions, which they were exceptional in every scene. Even the second roles were quite good which shows that there was a careful selection of the cast. It is the second directorial work by British Amma Asante and anyone would have thought a more experienced director based on the amazing result we saw. Furthermore, the evolution was pleasant although there were some very touching moments while historical references were quite enlightening. "Belle" was an artistic success but it failed to be commercial too. It might be screened to a limited group of cinema halls and for this reason, it had low worldwide revenues ($15,500,000). Though, the audience should have choosed to see this film in cinemas because “Belle” is one of those movies which are best seen on the big screen. It received good reviews from movie experts and it has amassed a pretty good score on IMDb (7.4). Personally, I would give a better score because it combined aptly a romantic story with profound messages! PiI8PNdvkhY- The Judge
"The Judge" was originally released in my country's cinemas last October but a neighbourhood cinema choosed it to have a discount price for a week. The truth is that we hadn't intended to go to see it because we thought it might be quite boring because of the script. However, "The Judge" is quite enjoyable because of the good performances of the leading duo Robert Downey, Jr. and Robert Duvall and the remaining characters participating in the film. Robet Duvall received a nomination for his supporting role from the Golden Globe Awards and the Academy Awards. If he had won the Golden Statuette, he would have become the oldest winner in Oscar history! The protagonist of the movie Robert Downey, Jr. plays a very successful lawyer who returns to his homestead after a very unpleasant event for him and his family. His relations with his father remain cold and their communication is very difficult between them. However, everything will change when his father will be accused of murder with intent and his son has to untertake his defense. Although the story is a courtroom drama, the director David Dobkin is not focused only on the court room. "The Judge" has some external shots which I found them very pleasant to the eye. It was very smart on behalf of him not to limit the story in a closed room and for this reason the development was not very tiring. However, the 142 minutes that the movie lasts was very sufficient for the content of this film. Shortly before the end, the film was full of clichés and melodrama but the emotional development did not touch us at all. Also, we felt that it would finish earlier everytime but the last scenes showed the opposite. However, it was well directed, it had very good performances, beautiful photo and the dialogue was very clever and cynical. "The Judge" is a film that contains both dramatic and comic elements and was one of the good productions of last year. I just can not understand why the production spent $50 million for the budget when it should have cost a lot less money. Rather it seems that the big names of the cast, demanded very high amounts of money which I find it quite excessive. It was not a great achievement on their participation in this movie. "The Judge" was a moderate box office success but managed to outnumber the money spent on the budget. Oddly enough, it was within twenty-five most commercial films in Greece last year and it was played for a very long time in theaters. Normally, this does not make such a great impression since Greeks are known to be litigious and their personal affairs are almost always solved in court. So, I guess that "The Judge" was a very tempting story/movie for them. Though, "The Judge" is a good movie that I think will be appreciated more than those who have or had bad relationships with their fathers and viewers who love watching courtroom dramas. "The Imitation Game" is one of the most hype films of the last two months after receiving a total of nine nominations at the Bafta awards and was nominated for eight Oscars. The film is based on true events and it takes place in London in the period of WWII. Having seen the official trailer three months ago, I was convinced that this movie would be very good. Eventually we decided to watch it over a month ago and its result fully satisfied us. It is certainly one of the most important films of last year! "The Imitation Game" has a very interesting scenario since it is based on the life of Alan Turing, who was a genius of his time and his achievements still have influence in our lives. Essentially, he is the man who broke the Nazis' Enigma code and he created the first computer through his "Turing machine". However, he never experienced the recognition that he should have had and it took almost fifty years from his death to become widely known for his accomplishments! "The Imitation Game" had very good directing, well-written script, excellent cinematography, masterful photography, elaborate montage and remarkable soundtrack. However, I believe that the performances are those that literally steal the show and Benedict Cumberbatch was excellent in the leading role! He deserved to be the big winner in the "Best Actor" category". Equally good was Keira Knightley, which lately she has not played in very good movies. Nevertheless, her participation in "The Imitation Game" brought her back to the right choices and she earned a nomination for the "Best Supporting Actress" category. The Norwegian Morten Tyldum undertook the directing and gave the best of himself, as the new film stands out enough from his previous job. I had seen the good enough "Headhunters" three years ago, which had received very good reviews but I think that "The Imitation Game" will always be the top film of his career. I find it very difficult or impossible for him to outshine this particular movie. "The Imitation Game" is one of the best films of last year! It's a great production and deserved to win all the Oscar awards it was nominated for. It has had very good overall earnings - compared to the budget ($14.000.000) - so far ($180.500.000)! In case that it won many Gold Statuettes, it would intrigue even more people to go and see it in the cinemas. It has been loved by a lot of people and it has already been one of the 250 best films of IMDb based on the rating by its users. Luckily, it was appreciated by the American Film Academy because there is always a front runner which goes home without receiving any awards. It received the Golden Statuette for "Best Adapted Screenplay". Alexandre Desplat is a great composer! I love this : RIELdjwCGHE- Least Fave Beyonce Single: Round 25
