"Unbroken" is the third directorial debut of Angelina Jolie and it was released on Christmas Day in America. In my country, it was released New Year's day as advertised. It was definitely advertised a lot on TV and in cinemas for two whole months. "Unbroken" is based on the true story of the Olympic athlete Louis "Louie" Zamperini who experienced unpleasant events and hardships during World War II. Seeing the impressive official trailer, I was sure that this film would be great and it would have an interesting development. However, I was not satisfied with the result. "Unbroken" was well directed and the performances were quite good but the script was not sufficiently adapted to the big screen. It seemed to me that the story had many hyperboles to the point of being annoying in some parts. Moreover, there were repeated scenes of sadism, which gave me the impression that Jolie envied the glory of "12 Years a Slave". However, at this time there was torture by a Japanese corporal on a white soldier and the background was a Japanese concentration camp. It seems that Brangelina were obsessed with the WWII last year after Brad Pitt starred in "Fury". The scriptwriters and Jolie were mainly focused on the suffering of the protagonist in the concentration camp. This is not evident in the official trailer as it contains a variety of different scenes. Personally, I was not moved at all with the story, because my perception of life is the exact opposite of that which the protagonist had. I am against to experience some very cruel situations and inhuman events that would create serious psychological problems in the future, just to live, so it is best to try to avoid them by any means. In this case, however, we saw a man who was afraid to die, was compromised with the sadistic behaviors of the psycho Japanese and finally wanted to forgive him after all that. Obviously, the film intended to heroize and to canonise the particular person because as we all know there aren't any heroes or "saints" in the current days. Also, the cinema, of course, is an organ that anyone can use to spread their message to viewers. However, if the scenario was excepted, "Unbroken" had very good filming, elaborate editing, great cinematography, loud sound effects and its official song "Miracles", which plays at the end of the movie credits, was one of the best songs from last year! It has also been nominated for three Academy Awards such as "Best Cinematography", "Best Sound Editing" and "Best Sound Mixing" despite being snubbed by the Golden Globes! "Unbroken" had a strong beginning in the Box Office. It has outnumbered its budget ($65,000,000) and it has managed to collect double the amount of earnings worldwide! So, it can not be said that Jolie failed with her new work after "Unbroken" amassed many viewers in cinemas. It has been received a decent average score on IMDb (7,2) indicating that "Unbroken" was liked by the majority of viewers who evaluated it. However, I wouldn't say that its satisfactory earnings and the positive average score affect my point of view as I continue to believe that this film was made with the intent to cause impressions and nothing else.

I watched the official trailer six months ago. Based on the wikipedia, the film was initially to be released on July 25, 2014, but it was later shifted to July 18, 2014. On June 3, 2014, the film's release was delayed to February 6, 2015 due to additional time needed to complete over 2,000 special effects shots of the film and prepare an effective marketing campaign. The visual effects look very impressive! It was written, produced, and directed by The Wachowskis. Do you remember them? They wrote and directed "The Matrix" sixteen years ago! They have also written and directed two amazing movies in the last decade (V for Vendetta & Cloud Atlas). I hope "Jupiter Ascending" will be one of the best blockbusters this year.. gQHKolIqBGs

  12. "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" is the last film of the trilogy based on the novel "The Hobbit" by the English author J.R.R. Tolkien. It was released in my country a week before Christmas, and it was the second most successful movie of the last year. Having seen the previous two films, I can say that they had very good directing, spectacular photography, stunning scenery and remarkable soundtrack! So going to see the last part of the trilogy, I had high expectations for its content. However, "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" was very exciting but certainly only in the final battle. The movie starts directly with the attack of the dragon Smaug to destroy Laketown since it ended this way in "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug". Of course, the producers and the director Peter Jackson could have added that particular scene in the previous film so as to initiate with a more relaxed way the third part. They preferred, however, to start with intensity the last movie, something that I did not find visually pleasing. Then there were some scenes that were necessary for the story and finally it concluded with the epic battle between goblins (Orcs) and the Wargs of Moria, Gundabad and the Misty Mountains against the Men of the Long Lake, the Dwarves on and near the Lonely Mountain, the Elves of Mirkwood, and the great Eagles of the Misty Mountains. Right there the film had too much action, amazing battle scenes (Legolas against Bolg, Thorin against Azog), elaborate montage and very loud sound effects! The Academy totally appreciated the latter and "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" has been nominated for "Best Sound Editing". I wouldn't say that its visuals effects satisfied me all over the course of the film, but the battle of the five armies were quite spectacular! Definitely "The Hobbit" can not be compared to the "Lord of the Rings" but that does not mean that it shouldn't have been adapted on the the big screen. Instead it was an apt choice of the producers to turn the "prequel" of "The Lord of the Rings". Moreover, as we all know there is no inspiration anymore in Hollywood after nobody supports fresh/original stories. At least, seeing those that already exist and have millions of fans worldwide. And "The Hobbit" was a great production that managed to become very profitable throughout this period. "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" was one of the most costly productions of last year. It has managed to triple its total budget in receipts ($250.000.000 - $806.000.000) but it ended up to be the least successful part of the trilogy. Nevertheless, it has a high average score on IMDb (7,7) and it was one of the most hype films of 2014. It is obvious that viewers can't stand the harsh reality that this world has and they choose to see fairytales or fantasy stories in cinema to escape from the daily routine. Moreover, they need to see that the good always wins in the end, something that doesn't often happen outside the cinema.

"Exodus: Gods and Kings" is an ambitious project which came out in cinemas worldwide in the second week of December. The choice of its release was deliberate since the content of the movie would intrigue Christians all around the world to go to see it during the holidays. Having seen the impressive official trailer two months ago and knowing that the film was directed by Ridley Scott, there was no way not to see it on the big screen. Nevertheless, the film didn't have as much hype as it should have, and I guess that it happened because it received very lukewarm reviews. "Exodus: Gods and Kings" was one of the most impressive films of the last year! By the way, it was the last movie I saw in the cinema, two days before the year was over! Basically, the film is based on the life of Moses, but the writers have added too many of their ideas. Do not expect to see exactly what we read from religious education in secondary school. When Hollywood undertakes a mythical story or a biblical person, it never follows faithfully their stories such as Hercules, Noah etc. So, why "Exodus: Gods and Kings" could be an exception? Besides, from the movie title, you can see in advance what you are going to see. However, it had very good digital effects, intense sound effects and nice performances from around the cast. Christian Bale was convincing in his role and the second roles greatly exceeded the interpretations in comparison with those we usually see in the respective television productions. It also had very good cinematography, magnificent photography and remarkable soundtrack. Having seen many films by Ridley Scott, what I can say with confidence is that he always tries his best. I have not seen a bad movie from him so far. Instead, I would say that I have seen many favorite movies that have remained timeless over the years such as Alien, Thelma & Louise, 1492: Conquest of Paradise and Gladiator! Yet I believe that his career has undeperformed slightly in recent years. Of course, he did not make bad movies, but their effects were not as impressive as to remind in the minds of viewers as with those that were in the beginning of his career. They are good but in no case exceptional. Nevertheless, "Exodus: Gods and Kings" is a pretty good production which disappointed us a little with its progression. Especially, the last forty minutes of the movie which is one of the most important parts of the story of Moses, we watched an exaggeration, one after another. Also, the parting of the Red Sea scene was not portrayed correctly. "Exodus: Gods and Kings" had a fairly modest success in the Box office. For some, of course, it was considered disappointing. It managed to outnumber the budget which was provided by the producers worldwide although it had no satisfactory earnings in the USA. I imagine that the American public was not enthusiastic about Moses' story on the big screen and so there was no rush to see it at the theater. It also hasn't received a better assessment from IMDb members. However, I think it's not a representative rating. "Exodus: Gods and Kings" is clearly better than 6.3 because only its technical achievements touch a 7. So, if you add an additional two to three positive things, it deserves a higher score. Though, it was certainly banned in several Muslim countries such as Egypt, UAE, Morocco, Kuwait, etc. because they felt that it had historical inaccuracies and insults Islam and other religions. So, I do not consider impossible some fanatical Muslims have rated it with a zero without even seeing it.

I will rent it from my neighbourhood's dvdstore when it comes out. I haven't watched "Annie" yet but I'm not crazy about it. The original movie was quite good and Columbia Pictures shouldn't have released the remake. I feel that Holywood lacks inspiration these days..I haven't watched "The Book of Life" yet but I rarely watch animations on the big screen. I'm old enough to watch them.. :P However, I watched "Up" and "9" in the cinema five years ago..I highly recommend them (especially "Up"). I watched three movies in the cinema the last three days. These are : "The Imitation Game", "The Judge" and "Belle". I will write reviews about them in the next weeks. So, I will change my nominations again. I'm looking forward for your nominations here.. Are you sure about your score for "12 Years A Slave"..? I don't think that it deserves less than a 10 because it's a masterpiece! It's one of the most groundbreakings movies that I've ever watched in the cinema and it was my favourite movie of 2013.

I didn't say that it was bad..However, I need to watch the first one for having a better opinion about them. I watched this movie a long time ago. It had some frightening scenes but it wasn't very scary at all. I think that it belongs in this topic too. Very good choice! *1 I totally agree with you! Many directors of supernatural horror films copied this movie in the last decade. If I had watched it when I was kid or teenager, I would have had a better opinion about it. I felt that it seemed a little bit fake in comparison with the current visual effects. However, it's not a bad film and I'm sure that it has many fans all over the world but it didn't impress me at all. *2 I watched "Rec 2" but I really wanted to rent the first film. I didn't like the whole concept. The shaky cam always irritates me. Nevertheless, it had many frightening scenes. I haven't watched "Dark Skies" yet but I watched "Invasion" seven years ago. I don't remember many things about this movie because my ex relationship harrassed me in the cinema.. I think that it was our second date. However, the movie was average. Wise choice!

"[Rec] 2" is a Spanish horror film that was released in the cinemas five years ago. However, it was released in my country a year later directly in the Dvd market. I had heard very good things about the first film and I wanted to rent it from my neighborhood's dvdstore. However, I got confused and instead choose "[Rec]". I accidentally rented the sequel. So I will judge this movie as it is without making comparisons as it would happen if I watched the first film. "[Rec] 2" was not as scary as I expected and it seemed pretty fake in many parts. Basically, its plot reminded me of the very successful videogames "Resident Evil" and "Silent Hill". The evolution happens in real time, the shots were very close to the faces of the actors and almost all the scenes you saw through the frame of a camera. Surely, this was the concept of the film, but the shaking camera going up and down all the time only caused me a lot of frustration. From the beginning I knew that I would not like it at all. It had amateur interpretations, indifferent characters and common scenario. It was like seeing a mediocre film version of "Silent Hill". From a point and then, listening to constant screaming, very loud voices, mass hysteria and all this created an unbearable situation for me. However, it had some sudden frightening scenes and the end was subversive, but of course I'm not absolutely sure for the latter. After the first hour, I lost complete interest in the film and maybe if I looked better, I would know how it would have ended. However, for a Spanish production, it was not bad because European productions never use big budgets to turn horror movies and this chapter did not fare very badly. I just do not understand this new cinematic trend, turning horror movies with amateur camera to look more realistic. On the contrary, they look more fake on the big screen and the bad performances of the actors make them even worse. Once the cinema offers you sight, it would be preferable these kinds of films rely more on specialized visual effects, very loud sound effects and atmospheric background. And not in improvisations. "[Rec] 2" is definitely not one of the best horror movies I've seen. I recognize that there are a lot of horror fans who liked it but having seen so many horror movies, I can not classify it in the list with the best of them. It has received a moderate score on IMDb (6.6) - good enough for this genre - and had satisfactory total earnings for European splatter! I would recommend it only to the fans of the survival games that evolve in real time because "[Rec] 2" could have come out as videogame too. If it hasn't happened already. G18Y-S8YrQ0

"Poltergeist" is definitely one of those movies that I really wanted see them when I was kid but deliberately avoided to rent from my neighborhood's videoclub because I thought that it would be very scary. I remember that private channels on tv always played it after midnight so it was a bit hard to see it because of my age. The Greek title was attributed as the "Spirit of Evil" and that caused me bad thoughts about its content. I had read a relevant article which it had a negative impact on me. The article said that some of the actors of the film died after shooting the film and that there was a curse that was associated with the early deaths. Eventually, I decided to see it after so many years since we rarely watch horror movies in the cinema and this movie had not been re-released. "Poltergeist" came out in theaters in 1982 and it was one of the most successful films in the Box Office. I did not know any actor in the cast but the performances were ideal for this film. The truth is that it was not at all scary and the effects seemed fake in most scenes. The fact that this film is quite old did play a role and at the time, the film industry did not have the technique to create stunning effects and an atmosphere of horror in each scene. Nevertheless, the film was proposed by the Academy Oscar for "Best Visual Effects" but lost the Golden Statuette to "ET". It was also proposed for "Best Original Score" and also for "Best Sounnd Editing" which I think was the strongest point of the film. Its plot has an interest without being tiring and prevailing mystery about what is going to happen in the end. Tobe Hooper undertook the direction while Steven Spielberg invented the central idea, wrote the screenplay with Michael Grais and Mark Victor and was co-producer with Frank Marshall. It seems that he believed in the whole thing and the latter reciprocated him with glory and money. It was no accident that many called that time as "The Spielberg Summer" after "ET" and "Poltergeist" were released a week apart. "Poltergeist" was not as I expected but it is a classic horror film nowadays. It was the eighth most commercial film in 1982, followed by two more sequels without having the same great response as the original film. It has received a pretty good score on IMDb (7,4), which leads me to believe that mainly older people rate it very positively. It is definitely not a bad movie, but I think that I would appreciate it more if I watched it in my childhood. However, it distinguises for some scenes that are classics over the years and for the performance of Zelda Rubinstein, who plays the eccentric psychic. r9yBBjAR7nY

"White God" is an European film that was released in my city's cinemas one month ago. It was originally screened in the last Cannes Film Festival, it received very good reviews and it won the "Prize Un Certain Regard". It was the formal submission for Hungary for the upcoming Oscars for the "Best Foreign Language Film" category. I totally believe that it was proposed because it's one of the most shocking stories I've ever seen on the big screen! "White God" is based on a young girl's love for her dog, Hagen, and the reactions that they face from society in order to have it along with her in her father's house. The latter refuses to keep it in his apartment after police imposed a fine and so he abandons Hagen in the streets of Budapest. This event starts an entire race for survival for Hagen after facing violence and exploitation of people, in order to make money from it and to feel that they exercise authority over it. However, young Lily tries to find Hagen by herself, risking her own life after crossing the dangerous alleys and streets at night with her bike. The Hungarian Kornel Mundruczo not only wrote the film script but he took over the directing. He uses this story with allegorical significance because he wanted to emphasize about xenophobia and negative attitude of people to anything different from them. The film has some very powerful moments that will cause you emotional distress and is definitely one of the most sensitive stories of the last decade. It has a very interesting scenario, well-written dialogues and very good performances. The young actress was convincing with her role and her performance was charismatic as Lili. The film also has an amazing soundtrack, that combined with some scenes, will bring tears to your eyes. Just in the theater we went, the audience used their tissues during the intermission and after the end of the film. I believe that anyone who has a dog or they had one before, there is no way not to come out crying from this movie. "White God" is definitely one of the best films of the last year! Unfortunately, it didn't manage to be one of the nine movies that made January shortlist of the upcoming Oscars. However, it is one of the movies which will have a large fanbase over the years and will be discussed by several groups of people. Dog lovers will love this movie. The same happened with "Hachi: A Dog's Tale". However, it's score on IMDb is totally unfair since it has received a 7.0 so far, quite a low score for this movie. At least, it should have had a 8.5, not only for strong emotions provoking but also for the social messages that it wants to convey to you. I highly recommend it to everyone! http://www.femina.hu/hazai_sztar/feher_isten_premier/feher_isten_fb.jpg kIGz2kyo26U
  23. Best Picture American Sniper Birdman Boyhood The Grand Budapest Hotel The Imitation Game Selma The Theory of Everything Whiplash Oh my gosh. I have watched only two movies so far.. So, I can't take a final decision about them. However, "Boyhood" and "The Grand Budapest Hotel" are very good movies. I'm so glad that Marion Cotillard has been nominated for "Best Female Performance"! Her acting was very good in "Two Days, One Night". I also loved Arquette's performance in "Boyhood". She was very sweet as single mom. Meryl Streep didn't deserve to have a nomination for "Best Supporting Role". She was good but her role was a caricature and nothing else. However, it's a tradition for her. "Interstellar" deserves to win all the techinical categories. It's a visual stunning film. Best Original Song / All of them are really forgettable. I totally miss the great ballads of the 90's.

Kelly's new song is quite good. I hope it will be a smash hit for her. Do you like "Into the Woods" soundtrack? I wouldn't say that it's one of the best musicals. Some songs are really irritating. There was a big fuss in the cinema because many viewers couldn't stand it. :P
