The Big Short
"The Big Short" is a biographical comedy-drama film which was released in my country's cinemas in the first week of the year. It is based on the homonymous book by Michael Lewis and deals with the global economic crisis that broke out during 2007-2008. "The Big Short" received rave reviews from the biggest movie sites and it received five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film Editing! Famous and acclaimed actors were involved in the cast and there are several cameo appearances too. Having only seen three movies until that period such as Joy, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Brooklyn, "The Big Short" was to be my next choice. The movie basically presents the big real estate market bubble that erupted in the United States and entailed the financial crisis of 2008, as a consequence the collapse of the global market. Since the beginning of the film we watch the movements of four small investors who bet against the banking system and in the end come out big winners. The film explains the laws of the market with intelligent and comprehensive examples which are analyzed by the main actors and celebrities in cameo appearances. "The Big Short" had very funny scenes, well-written dialogues and incredibly well structured characters. The versatile Adam McKay not only took over the directorial piece of the movie but also wrote the script along with Charles Randolph. Although, in the past, he has dealt mainly with comedies, he did famously in the demanding "The Big Short"! He studied very well the book and he presented it to the audience in the best way. Furtermore, "The Big Short" had excellent directing, fast cutting and very remarkable interpretations. The four main actors, Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt were convincing in their roles and they played a catalytic role in the perfect result of the film. Something told me that Christian Bale would retake the Golden Statuette for "Best Supporting Actor" and that time he really deserved it. Unfortunately, he was totally robbed by a weak performance. However, I think that Steve Carell should be a contender in this category too, having given one of the best performances of his career! The only drawback of the film albeit we could mention it as something negative, were numerous financial conditions are exposed throughout the duration of the film and coupled with fast switching scenes, maybe tired a large part of the viewers. However, for those who know about economics or at least some basic terms, the film will surely excite them with its gripping development! "The Big Short" is certainly one of the most enjoyable films I've seen on the big screen in recent years! It kept my interest steady from the start to finish and the script was very enlightening! "The Big Short" won the best impressions from fans and critics alike and it was voted by "The Producers Guild of American Award" as the "Best Theatrical Motion Picture". Although I had not yet watched all the nominated films for "Best Picture", I was sure that "The Big Short" would be one of the three big favorites. It had sufficient revenues to the Worldwide Box Office and it has acquired a high average score of 7.8 by IMDb users. I highly recommend it!

Brooklyn
"Brooklyn" is a romantic drama that was released in my country's cinemas in January. It is based on the homonymous novel of the Irishman Colm Tóibín, which became a bestseller in 2009! "Brooklyn" made its official premiere at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, which received excellent reviews and it was nominated for three Oscar Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay! The protagonist of the film is my favorite Saoirse Ronan, who is accompanied by acclaimed actors in key roles like Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent etc. I had previously not seen the official trailer and I deliberately did not read the plot. It is a standard practice that I follow in most films in recent years because I prefer not being influenced by opinions of people who I do not know. However, I do not know which is their “real” role as critics too. Some of them seem like good managers for some awful movies like “Goodbye to Language” and “A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence.” "Brooklyn" takes place in the homonymous geographical region of New York, in 1952. The central character of the story is a young Irish girl -with wonderful eyes- Eilis Lacey, who leaves her birthplace and she arrives in Brooklyn to make a new beginning. Although the first few months will be quite difficult for her because she miss her family, her friends and her home, over time she will be adjusted and will make new friends and partner experiences. However, a sad event will force her to return at her homeland and she will face various dilemmas about her future. Brooklyn or Enniscorthy Ireland? Family or marriage? Italian breadwinner or rich -weenie- Irishman? All the questions will be answered till the ending. Don't worry :) "Brooklyn" is a quite remarkable film which is based on the timeless theme of migration. Director of the film is the Irishman John Crowley and the script was written by British author Nick Hornby. "Brooklyn" had good directing, well-written dialogues, beautiful photography and excellent costumes! However, the biggest advantage of the movie was the participation of the talented and gifted Saoirse, who totally shines in this role. She interprets the heroine of the novel with brio and professionalism and it was appreaciated by all the major film organizations such as Golden Globes, Bafta, Oscar etc. Moreover, very good performances were given by the other actors/actresses. They also had a great presence in the film. The only negative aspect I found about this movie was that at some moments, it reminded me of TV films and perhaps this happened because its low budget. However, in general, the overall result was quite attentive. "Brooklyn" is a very good movie which is seen pleasantly throughout its whole duration. Although it had sufficient revenues worldwide, it didn't have the appropriate response in my country because the average Greek viewer was only for “Worlds Apart” or “Star Wars:The Force Awakens” during that period. Nevertheless, it has acquired a high average score of 7,5 in IMDb and received very good reviews from the experts of the film industry. "Brooklyn" is a story that will give you enough smiles and emotions in appropriate doses.

Star Wars VII - The Force Awakens
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" had its world premiere last December. In fact on 18.12.15. In my country, of course, it was released a week later, which angered all the domestic fans of the series! The new film broken many records and its total receipts ranked it in the third position of the most commercial films of all time! To be a honest I was never a lover or a huge fan of this series, although I have seen the six previous films. Despite this, I always thought that the first three movies were clearly higher than those released in the last 17 years, with the worst of them all being "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace". The "Force Awakens" is essentially the continuation of the story after the events that unfolded in "Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi". The forces of the Empire and The Resistance are looking to find the last Jedi, Luke Skywalker. The answer where he is hidden, located in a robot called BB-8, which is protected by a pilot of the Resistance. When the latter is caught by the Stormtrooper Army of sinister Kylo Ren, BB-8 will escape and will ended up in the possession of a scavenger named Rey. However, an uncompromising stormtrooper, originally FN-2187, then "Finn", will assist the pilot to escape and his fate will lead him to Rey. From that point on, the plot becomes interesting as all the emblematic figures begin to appear from the first film. The new Star Wars was good but it was not superior to other blockbusters of last year. Something that James Cameron had accomplished with "Avatar" seven years ago. "The Force Awakens" had a pleasant development, stunning visuals effects, loud sound effects and captivating photography. J. J. Abrams not only took over the visual part of the film but he also wrote the script along with Lawrence Kasdan and Michael Arndt. The result of his work was not far away from the original films and for that reason satisfied major proportion of the audience. However, at some times the film was quite childish while the script was very simplistic. I cannot say that I was thrilled with the progress of its plot, but at least it did not tire us at any point although the total length of the film is 135 minutes! Finally, two of the advantages of the new chapter of the series was undoubtedly the participation of old stars / characters such as Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Chewbacca and C-3PO, who would certainly caused tears of joy and emotion to the fans and the addition of the two emerging actors, Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, who brought a fresh air to the series. "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" was the most hyped film of last year! It literally defines the word “hype”. It had a very successful campaign all over the world -The marketing team moved heaven and earth- and it was advertised by the media more than any other movie that aired in 2015. It is the most commercial film in the American Box Office of all time and it made the best opening in most countries worldwide. It received very positive feedback from the audience and critics and it has acquired a very high average score of 8,2 by IMDb users. Personally, I found it just entertaining and nothing more. Alternative title of the movie could be "Star Wars: The Power of Advertising”.

Joy
"Joy" is a dramatic comedy that was released in my country's cinemas on Christmas Eve! The film's director David O. Russell worked with Jennifer Lawrence for a third time, after "Silver Linings Book" and "American Hustle". "Joy" received two nominations at the Golden Globes, Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy and Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical. Besides, it was nominated in the Best Actress category by the Academy Awards. Having watched several films from the filmography of David O. Russell such as Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees, The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, I concluded that this director is considered quite overestimated by committees of various film awards because each work is always ranged at the same level. However, after "Joy", it radically changed my view on him and maybe eventually I had misunderstood him. No offence David. "Joy" is inspired by the life of self-made entrepreneur Joy Mangano which managed to become a multimillionaire in the 90s with her practical inventions! The film shows almost all aspects of her life such as family, separation, successes, failures etc. and follows the heroine to conquer her American Dream. David O Russell did not only limit himself to the directorial piece of the film but he also wrote the script. He did a great job in which it kept us on a steady interest from beginning to end. "Joy" balances between drama and comedy and the story spreads too many messages to viewers. It had remarkable directing, well-written script and beautiful photography. Despite this, I believe that the exceptional presence of Jennifer Lawrence was the highlight of the film! She literally owned this role and her interpretation is certainly one of the best in recent years! The truth is that I felt disappointed with her in the last Hunger Games film but with "Joy", she gained me again. The remaining performances were good although I distinguished that of Isabella Rossellini. "Joy" was the first movie that I saw on the big screen for this year and I was very enthusiastic about it. The same happened with the greek film"Little England" two years ago. I think "Joy" is a film that should be shown in every sales seminar and the successful career of Mangano should be standard for any professional. "Joy" received mixed reviews worldwide and most of them notably focus on the unique interpretation of Lawrence. Personally I liked it very much because I found the story fascinating and I will highly recommend to anyone!

European Cinema 2013-2015
"Mustang" is a French-German-Turkish production that was released in my country's cinemas last December! It participated in last year's Cannes Film Festival, as part of the Directors' Fortnight, which won the Europa Cinemas Label Award! It was the official submission by France for the Oscar for "Best Foreign Language Film" and it ended up as one of the five nominated films! Furthermore, it was proposed for a Golden Globe for "Best Foreign Language Film" and it was awarded the 2015 LUX Prize. It is the European Parliament's Prize. I had read a few lines about the film but I had not watched its official trailer, so I had imagined something different before I went to see it on the big screen. Without meaning a bad thing necessarily. However, the thing that caused me the most impression about this movie, was the fact that the French proposed a film which was shot entirely in Turkey when they could send something to refer to their own traditions and customs. Maybe they are not so chauvinists as we thought they would be. "Mustang" takes place in a remote village in the east of Turkey. There, five sisters who have lost their parents, grow at their grandmother's house under the supervision of their strict uncle. One day, they are playing with their classmates in the water at the beach. From this innocent event, they will stir the reaction of a conservative neighbor. As a consequence, their grandmother and their uncle will restrict them to the inside of the house. While vainly they attempt to escape from their house arrest, their grandmother and their uncle have already prepared their plans for them which is marriage. "Mustang" is a remarkable film which clearly speaks for the conservatism and the repression prevailing in my neighbor country. Women must follow specific rules and behavior and it is obvious that they do not share the same rights as men. The Turkish-French Deniz Gamze Ergüven, was not only limited to the directorial piece of the movie, but she also wrote the screenplay along with Alice Winocour. It was her first feature film and although it isn't based on true events, the film's scipt is not far from reality. "Mustang" was well directed, it had interesting story and beautiful music. It has some very funny scenes although it's a drama and it is seen pleasantly throughout the duration. However, I believe that the five young heroines were those who played a catalytic role in the overall result. Their performances were amazing and the character of the younger sister, Lale, was the most enjoyable/charismatic. It reminded me of “Wadjda”. "Mustang" was my last film in the cinema for 2015 and I can comfortably say that it enters the list of my favorite European films ever! It was definitely one of the pleasant surprises of last year and it totally deserved the critics' attention! It received rave reviews worldwide and it has acquired a high average score of 7,7 in IMDb. If "Son of Saul" was not a candidate movie for last year, probably "Mustang" would have grabbed the Golden Statuette in the category for "Best Foreign Language Film" at the 88th Academy Awards. I highly recommend it! ABNB3zw5BAo

Great & Decent Horror Movies
"As Above, So Below" is a claustrophobic horror film that was released in US cinemas two years ago. However, this film was never aired in Greek cinemas and it went directly to the DVD market. The only thing I knew about this film was its cryptic title and for this reason I was very curious about the content of the movie before I watched it with my brother last December. A young female archeologist, who holds a lot of knowledge and techniques in various subjects such as history, alchemy, etc., tries to discover the philosopher's stone. Together with a friend, who is a cameraman, will convince a former boyfriend of hers, who is also an archeologist, to descend to the catacombs of Paris in order to solve the hidden riddle in the tomb of an old alchemist. However, they will use the help of a group of three young French, who have explored the catacombs several times before. In their attempt to find the tomb of the alchemist, they will be confronted with their own past but with new strange situations too. “As Above, So Below" is a pretty scary movie which is based on an interesting script idea. The atmosphere of the film is daunting and the evolution of the plot keeps the viewer's interest steady throughout its duration. The film is full of tension and agony and you cannot be sure of what will happen at the ending. Will all of them survive, or only some or will they all die? The directing was signed by John Erick Dowdle, who also wrote the screenplay with his brother, Drew Dowdle. Having seen his previous directorial work on the big screen, Devil (2010), I can say that this man has a tendency to isolate the characters in enclosed spaces. In "Devil", the protagonists are trapped in a lift, while in "As Above, So Below", the protagonists are lost in the catacomb complex. We can realize that both of them are quite scary situations. I guess for the majority of people. Nevertheless, the technique of "shaky" camera was used in "As Above, So Below", it was very tedious in some parts of the movie and the last scene might disappoint a large proportion of the public. "As Above, So Below" is definitely one of the best horror movies I've seen in the last five years! Although it did not cost an exuberant amount of money for Universal Pictures, in reality, it was only 5$ million to be precise, it managed to collect 8 times more the amount of its budget, making it automatically one of the most successful productions of 2014. It received mixed reviews worldwide as is common in almost all such films and it got an average score of 6.1 by IMDb users. Personally I really liked it and I think it is an ideal choice for all those who are crazy for horror films. Fq358xHbzN4

Great & Decent Horror Movies
"Mirrors" is a supernatural horror film that came out in my country’s cinemas eight years ago! "Mirrors" was originally intended as the remake of the South Korean film "Into the Mirror", but the French director Alexandre Aja preferred to write his own script and was inspired by his own story. I did not intentionally read the plot before I watched it on DVD but neither had I seen its official trailer on YOUTUBE. However, I knew that it had satisfactory earnings in the worldwide box office! The main character of the story is Ben Carson, a former police officer who takes a job as a night security guard in an old shopping center, which was destroyed by a fire in the past. There, Ben Carson will notice very quickly that the huge mirrors that exist within the building, exert a strange effect on him. Ben has to find out the terrifying secrets and releases the forces hidden in the mirrors so as to protect his family and his self. Alexandre Aja wrote the script along with Grégory Levasseur and further assisted both in the production of the film. The former had previously directed the French horror film "High Tension" and "The Hills Have Eyes". Although "High Tension" fully disappointed me with its last scene, "The Hills Have Eyes" totally scared me in its whole duration! So, Aja, had the suitable experience for this genre, despite his young age. "Mirrors" had several frightening scenes, fast evolution and an unpredictable ending. The interpretations were relatively good, Kiefer Sutherland portrayed the main character while the bust of the leading actress, Paula Patton, literally stole the show! Nevertheless, Ι have to admit that I did not like the opening scene, which I found it quite amateurish -directing and interpretation- and I did not like some sloppy technical effects. Still though, I would say that "Mirrors" is one of the decent horror movies of the previous decade and keeps your interest steady from beginning to end. "Mirrors" is a horror film that will certainly divide the public. The fans of this genre will surely appreciate it while everyone else may feel underwhelmed by the total result. However, this does not mean that the film was bad since it had intensity, suspense and edge-nerving scenes. This means that it achieved its purpose as a horror film. All the rest belong to the personal sphere of each of us. Having said that, "Mirrors" received negative reviews worldwide and it has amassed an average score of 6,2 by IMDb users. I would highly recommend it to all those who are obsessed with their mirrors. And when you finished the movie, go and look in your personal mirrors. O92QxxgeCO8

Drama & Social Films
"El botón de nácar" or "The Pearl Button" is a Chilean documentary which was released in my country last December! It made its official premiere at the 65th Berlin Inrternational Festival where it won the Silver Bear for Best Script and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury! It was only the third time in my life that I watched a documentary on the big screen after "Fahreneit 9/11" by Michael Moore and "Smyrna, the destruction of a cosmopolitan city 1900-1922" by Maria Ilioú! However, I have seen several documentaries in the Eugenides Foundation, at the Athens Planetarium, which has always had very attentive productions. What secrets can two buttons hide found deep in the ocean? The answer is given though in this documentary by the Chilean filmmaker Patricio Guzmán. "The Pearl Button" begins with the natural beauty of Chile and the geographical specificity of it. Those who do not know, Chile extends for more than 4300 km from north to south and the maximum width from west to east is no more than 350 km. So, that alone, makes this country quite special. The director continues with the importance of water in the lives of Chilean residents but also in the lives of all people in general. Moreover most of the human body consists of water and without it we cannot live. However, water has a voice and it has a memory too. And for the latter, the director devotes most of his time on it. Guzmán makes particular reference to the first natives of the country who were decimated by the Spanish conquistadors. He puts great emphasis on their everyday life, which had always been associated with water, and records the personal testimonies of three remaining Kawesqars. It continues with the political turmoil that existed in the country during the 20th century and ends with the horrific crimes that were committed during the Pinochet dictatorship. "The Pearl Button" is a remarkable production that will surely fascinate the thinking public. It's a magical journey through time that will cause you a variety of emotions throughout its duration. Patricio Guzmán made an enviable job and it was no coincidence that he won two awards at the Berlin Festival! "The Pearl Button" has a gorgeous photography, elaborate montage and its content is proved highly instructive. I highly recommend it! Atra27D18g4

European Cinema 2013-2015
"Mia Madre" came out in my country’s cinemas in December! It is a Franco-Italian production which took participation in the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. Although it did not win the Palme d’Or, it won the Ecumenical Jury Prize and received numerous nominations at the Silver Ribbon Awards and David di Donatello Awards. For those who are not familiar with these awards, they are institutions which award Italian films. I had the chance to watch it at its avant premiere because I won a contest and the film left me positive emotions. "Mia Madre" was the alternative choice for Christmas period for all those who did not intend to see the multi advertised "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", the adventure "Point Break" and the biography "Joy". The central character of the film is Margherita, who directs a movie starring a famous Italian-American actor, Barry Higgins. However, their cooperation is quite problematic and the shootings last much longer than they should. Meanwhile, Margherita’s mother is in hospital and is going through the last stages of her life. So, Margherita has to face the caprice and the whim of the Italian-American star when she is in the film’s deck but she has to find solutions to her own problems too. "Mia Madre" is a story that oscillates between drama and comedy. The Italian director Nanni Moretti used multiple flashbacks during the film and the script contained many autobiographical elements. Moreover, he is impersonating Margherita’s brother, but giving less emphasis to his character, not like other directors/actors. "Mia Madre" was directed nice, it had an interesting script and good performances. The protagonist of the film, Margherita Buy, was very convincing in her role -though I doubted it at some stage- and John Turturro gave an enjoyable performance. "Mia Madre" had several funny scenes, which they are always associated with emotional moments like a Scottish shower. Moreover, does the same happen in reality? "Mia Madre" is a remarkable European production, which was released at the right time in the domestic cinemas. The film was pleasantly seen by everyone and will certainly touch viewers who are / were very attached to their mother. It received positive feedback from experts in the film industry and it has garnered a good rating by users of IMDb (6,9). It is a film that shows the loss of our loved ones in their own special way and in this case, could not be any other than that of the mother. All I have to say: Mother is the only one! jWiFif96t3Y

Carol
"Carol" was certainly one of the most controversial and hyped films in the circles of critics last year. It originally premiered in the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, where it received very positive feedback and it won the Queer Palm award while Rooney Mara won the "Best Actress" award. "Carol" is based on the novel "The Price of Salt" by Patricia Highsmith, which contains many autobiographical elements of the author. The film earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Actress, Best Suporting Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score and Best Costume Design, five Golden Globe Award nominations and nine Bafta Award nominations . "Carol" is a dramatic story about the love of two women who met by chance in a department store in Manhattan in the early 50s. Carol is separated with her husband, with whom she has a child while Therese is bond to someone who does not feel complete happiness. Their acquaintance will prove crucial as they will experience strong emotions but they will have to face the obstacles that will arise with this choice. "Carol" is a very special film that fully respects the relationship between two people of the same sex. It is in no way challenging although it is based on a bold story. The director of the movie, Todd Haynes, has dealt with a similar issue in the past, "Far From Heaven", so he had the necessary experience to adapt the specific story to the big screen. "Carol" had noteworthy directing, exceptional costumes, well-written script by Phyllis Nagy and wonderful soundtrack by Carter Burwell! Moreover, the interpretations of the two main actresses were very good and they played an important role in the overall outcome of the film. However, I think that Rooney Mara was more worthy of a Golden Globe or Academy Award than Cate Blanchett because the latter reminded me of a lesbian version of Jasmine Francis. Without meaning that this reduces her value as an actress since Blanchett is one of the most talented people in the movie business. She has given us great performances and she is particularly dear to the public and critics. Despite this, the film started very slowly -the cinema had an intermission- and it needed sufficient time for the plot to be more interesting. "Carol" was one of the most remarkable productions of last year! It received rave reviews worldwide and it was highly appreciated by many American critics associations! I will not say that it's one from those movies that cut many tickets but it was considered great artistic success! This is an unconventional story that will move a large portion of its viewers and it will charm those who see the love and sex with "different eyes".

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2
It wasn't so action packed as the first two films. It was quite slow as Mockingjay Part 1. Of course, the latter was boring as hell. It's a bad thing when we talk about action or adventure movies. It's ok for dramas. :teresa:

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2
The last chapter of the Hunger Games film series "Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2" came out in cinemas worldwide last autumn. Having seen all the previous films on the big screen, I was expecting to see something very epic and revolutionary in "Mockingjay Part 2"! So I did not read anything about the plot, but neither did I see the official trailer in a movie theater. I had no knowledge of the content of the new movie although I remembered some basic things from the "Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1". However, I expected it to have many twists that combined with appropriate doses of suspense and action. Something that never really happened. "Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2" was quite disappointing as the last film. It had very slow evolution and almost no activity. There were measured action scenes. Francis Lawrence took over the directing for the third consecutive time but he could not have done great things with this scenario. Incidentally he has directed extremely iconic video clips such as Bad Romance, What You Waiting For ?, Just Like A Pill, Whenever, Wherever and I Don't Want To Miss A Thing etc. Moreover, the main actors were looking at each other in almost every shot. Katniss looks at Peeta, Katniss looks at Gale, Peeta looks at Katniss, Pita looks at Gale, Gale looks at Katniss and Gale looks at Peeta and so on while the dialogues were few and laconic. Nevertheless, because I do not want to be only negative and passionate but objective too, the new capital had in comparison with the previous movie, most amazing special effects, very loud sound effects, eccentric costumes and intricate backdrops! However, in no way did it touch the first two chapters of the series which they had a better overall result. Finally, do not forget that clichés had a “field day” in the last movie. "Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2" hit first place in the Box Office although it had not the anticipated receipts in the first three days of the release. The truth is that the official release date was quite overshadowed by "Spectre" and the highly anticipated "Star Wars : The Force Awakens", which were both hyped continuously from the beginning of 2015! However, we do not need to look for excuses when a movie is not very good like "Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2". It was pretty boring and flabby in the biggest part of its total duration. I think I would have given up the book in the middle if I had come in the process to read it before I had seen the whole series. It is one of the few trilogies which begin very strongly but quickly deflate at the end.
