Locke
"Locke" was originally shown outside competition at the Venice Film Festival last year while in my country, it was released in late July. I remember that it was chosen by several cinemas in my city but I did not know anything more about this movie apart from its title. Yet a neighborhood cinema choose it at quite a low price, so I took the chance to watch it on the big screen! Do not expect too much from "Locke" as film production since the whole plot unfolds within a car (in a BMW X5 to be precise). The protagonist Tom Hardy gives an excellent performance and it's the only good point of the film. His facial expressions and his temperament convinces the viewers of the big trouble which his character faces and literally he carries the entire film on him. Moreover, there are not other actors on his side and all this leads to an "one man show". I couldn't say that I found the directing so enjoyable as the performance of Hardy and the story was not so strong so as to keep our interest high. Steven Knight not only wrote the script of "Locke" but he was also responsible for directing and thus played a key role in the outcome of the film. If we compared it with "Buried" (2010), which had a similar concept, I think "Locke" looses in most of the parts. The first film is based on the survival of the protagonist with his mobile as a unique tool (since he is buried in the soil) while in the second film, the protagonist simply is trying to reach help by phone, to sort out his life, all the time being inside his car. To be honest, I did not find the script idea as shocking as it was reported by some newspapers and magazines. Critics maybe love it and I think that they were honest. However, the marketing team of the movie used the titles for making fuss in the official trailer. It was just a different approach to an issue which we have seen several times in the cinema. It was successfully made but it was not very interesting. The dark shots and the consecutive callings was somewhat tedious and annoying from time to time. Some extra outside shots could have been added to break up the monotony. Of course, it had some good moments but its context was quite depressive. I believe that it is one from those films that it doesn't need to be watched in the cinema. On the contrary, I would say that it is better to watch it at home. "Locke" is an alternative cinematic proposal which it will divide the audience. Surely, some people will deify it and others will totally pan it. Personally, I'm somewhere in the middle because I do not think that it was neither very good nor very bad. It just could be based on a more exciting script idea. I will recommend it only for cinema lovers who are hungry for quirky concepts and the fans of Tom Hardy, who gives the best performance of his life! xdaofZfgV_Q

Ida
"Ida" is a Polish black and white movie that came out in my country's cinemas one month ago. It has been getting rave reviews wherever it screened and it won many awards at various famous festivals. "Ida" is the formal proposal of Poland for the category of "Best Foreign Language Film" in the upcoming Oscar! I read an interview from director Paweł Pawlikowski, that "Ida" differs from all the other films that he has watched so far in his life. So, his statement was very intriguing to me. Finally, he was right but in a bad way. "Ida" is definitely one of the most boring movies I've seen at the cinema and the most boring movie of this year (so far)! The black and white dingy and depressing shots and the very few dialogues tired us a lot. If I did not drink two coffees that day, I would have fallen asleep in the cinema hall. Honestly, I can not find a reason to recommend it to anyone to watch. The story was more of the same (again with Jews, again with executions), the performances were cold and indifferent (except for the actress that plays Ida's aunt) and its development literally froze in the last half hour. Definitely, the directing wasn't bad and the cinematography was remarkable, however, the rest lacked a lot. If death could have represented from a movie, it wouldn't be anything but "Ida", because all the events happened excruciatingly slowly during the film. It was only 80 minutes but it felt like a whole century passed by. Nevertheless, I can't get over the fact that the movie theater was full of viewers. Of course, the majority of them were hipsters and culture lovers who never miss these kinds of films. However, the bad thing about them is that they always criticize badly the most cinematic works which do not have the "quality standards" such as "Ida". In additionally, many of them happen to have a professional capacity over films (magazines, newspapers, television) and influence many people with their suggestions. I think that they are the wrong people in the right places. The dead silence that accompanied most of the scenes were very annoying to me and I felt cheated from all those reviews. Well they say in my country : "Where you hear many cherries, keep a small basket". "Ida" is one of those movies that does not sell many tickets. However, it's one of the movies that has loyal audience who watches these movies in the cinema and not at their homes (as other genres). It has seven nominations for the 27th European Film Awards, and something tells me that it will come out winning in some of them. Moreover, the same thing happened last year with the unutterable "La Grande Bellezza" which literally swept most categories! Hopefully, this will not be repeated with the Academy Award for "Best Foreign Language Film" at the 87th Academy Awards Film because I will lose any idea of this ceremony which honors cinematic achievements in the film industry. Do you mean the babysitter? She was very good. I didn't like her at first but I changed my mind about her at the end of the film. It was a very sensitive story! I didn't expect it to be so good.

What Maisie Knew
"What Maisie Knew" is an American social drama based on the homonymus novel by Henry James. It was first published in 1897 but the two writers Nancy Doyne and Carroll Cartwright adapted it to the modern era. Originally, it was screened at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2012 but it was released at the end of May this year in my country's cinemas. The truth is that we didn't remember the title of the film that period. We didn't watch the official trailer anywhere but its screening in a neighborhood cinema has given us the chance to watch it even so late. "What Maisie Knew" is one of those movies in which it needs to spend in your mind, so it can stew. When I left the cinema hall, I regarded it as a worthwhile social movie, but as the days passed, I realized that it is one of the best films of its kind. The young protagonist Onata Aprile identified with the role and she imparts to the audience the concerns, the worries, the fears and the rotations of all the emotions in which a child of separated parents has. In the case of Maisie, her parents had other priorities in their lives than to take care of her. Making parallel relationships with each lover that they found and giving a strong emphasis on their careers, they neglected their own child who ends up becoming "the ball" to each other because of their problematic relationship. This has a concequence on Maisie, unintentionally spending most of her time with her stepfather and stepmother. It is a touching story without melodrama and naive didacticism and concludes with this idea: that parents are not the ones that make children but those who grow with and really care for them. Besides, doesn't the same thing happen in normal life? After we have seen many times, adoptive parents grow to love with excess other people's children. As to performances, they were good enough by any actor/actress - although the little actress literally steals the show - and the plot of the movie did not tire at all. The directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel made a purposeful work and the music fits perfectly to the emotions of the small protagonist in every scene. "What Maisie Knew" received very positive reviews and was loved by a lot of people. It has a pretty good rating on IMDb (7,5) and most of them have only positive words to say. It's an interesting story that touches a chord with viewers and I imagine that many children of separated parents have been in similar situations. The film does not intend to make a difference with this movie, but it aims to remind the public that children need love, care and attention from both parents. Besides, the last scene of the film says it all. 9x4zFpGiN64
