  1. Total Points : 14 Charlotte Gainsbourg I believe that Charlotte Gainsbourg is a very special actress. The best thing about her is the fact that she is not predictable with her roles and she is always decent with her performances. She is an Anglo-French actress and singer (I really thought that she was only french). She is the daughter of English actress Jane Birkin and French singer and songwriter Serge Gainsbourg. She was born in London but she was raised in Paris. French is Gainsbourg's first language, but she is also fluent in English. She made her musical debut with her father on the song "Lemon Incest" at the age of twelve and she released an album with her father at the age of fifteen. She made her motion picture debut playing Catherine Deneuve's daughter in the film "Paroles et musique" (1984). In 1986, she won a César Award for "Most Promising Actress" for "L'effrontée", and, in 2000, she won "Best Supporting Actress" for the film "La Bûche". In 1993, Gainsbourg made her English speaking debut in "The Cement Garden", written and directed by her uncle, Andrew Birkin. In 2009, she won the award for "Best Actress" at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival for the film "Antichrist". She collaborated with von Trier once again on his 2013 film "Nymphomaniac", in which she plays the lead character. Gainsbourg's longtime partner is French-Israeli actor/director Yvan Attal and they have 3 children. Two members love this incredible woman. I have watched a few of her movies so far : 21 Grams (I don't remember her but the movie was very good), Antichrist (Intriguing plot but it's not one of the best Trier's films), The Tree (Nice movie with emotional performances), Melancholia (Amazing photography, nice performances but I felt extremely depressed in the cinema) and Nymphomaniac (Intriguing and enlightening story, raw performances, realistic scenes but it's not one of the best Trier's films). I would suggest you to watch "21 Grams" because it's definitely one of the best films of 2003, "The Tree" because it's a very sweet movie, "Melancholia" because it has great cinematography and beautiful atmospheric shots and "Nymphomaniac" because it's surely one of the most special movies in this year. It's not very good but it's quite different than the rest. Maybe, you will feel offensive with some scenes. However, you will remember it for a long time..
  2. Total Points : 14 Julie Andrews http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2QLhc7m4mEU/Uf222PLuIdI/AAAAAAAAF3s/GLe0gFkWslE/s1600/Julie%20Andrews%202.png Julie Andrews is one of the most elegant actresses worldwide!! She is a very talented woman. She is an English film and stage actress, singer, author, theatre director and dancer. Her debut film was La Rosa di Bagdad (1949). However, her first major role was in "Mary Poppins" fifteen years later. She won the Academy Award for "Best Actress" for her brilliant performance. She received her second Academy Award nomination for "The Sound of Music" (1965), and won the Golden Globe Award for "Best Actress in a Musical". Many viewers loved that movie and Julie Andrews was popular everywhere!! Critics praised her for her amazing performance! "The Sound of Music" displaced "Gone with the Wind" as the highest-grossing film of all-time that year. Between 1964 and 1967, she had other box office successes with "The Americanization of Emily", "Hawaii", Alfred Hitchcock's "Torn Curtain", and "Thoroughly Modern Millie", making her the most successful film star in the world at that time. However, her career was not always successful. In the 1970s, Andrews' film career slowed down following the commercial disappointments of "Star!", "Darling Lili", and "The Tamarind Seed". She returned to prominence with the critical and commercial successes of "10" (1979) and "Victor Victoria" (1982), receiving a third Academy Award nomination. Andrews' film career revived once more in the 2000s with the successes of "The Princess Diaries" (2001), its sequel "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement" (2004), the "Shrek" animated films (2004–2010), and "Despicable Me" (2010). In addition to an Academy Award, she has won a BAFTA, five Golden Globes, three Grammys, two Emmys, the Disney Legend award and the Kennedy Center Honors. Three members had her name on their lists. I have watched a few of her movies so far : Mary Poppins (Entertaining movie), The Sound of Music (My favourite musical ever!), The Princess Diaries (Funny but childish too), Shrek 2 (Very funny) and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (Not so good as the first film). I would suggest you to watch "Mary Poppins" because it's one of the most popular movies of the 60s and "The Sound of Music" because it defined the 60s. It has great performances, great songs and nice story. You will love it because it's one of the best films ever!

  11. "Belle De Jour" is a film by recognized Spanish director Luis Buñuel. It had bold enough content for that time (mid 60s) given its specific scripts but it received very positive reviews worldwide and it's considered a classic film nowadays. Honestly, I had not intended to watch it, looking at the pink poster of a neighborhood cinema. However, I heard some comments from my mother who watched it a long time before and I was tempted to watch it. "Belle De Jour" is based on the novel by Joseph Kessel (1928). The story tells the life of a young woman who spent her afternoon working in a brothel under the pseudonym "Belle De Jour". However, she doesn't do it because of money but because of her necessity to be sexually oriented since her husband is not sexually attracted to her even though she loves him. She has many erotic fantasies with sadomasochistic tendencies that have overwhelmed the mind. It has some interesting performances and the acting was decent by everyone. Catherine Deneuve has an aristocratic beauty although she perfroms a role completely opposite to her aura and her temperament. However, she does a great job but her facial expressions remain the same throughout the whole movie. Of course, this is not due to Deneuve's talent but the director / writer wanted to present the protagonist cold and unaffected by the unprecedented situations experienced . The direction of Buñuel was very good after the "Belle De Jour", it was his first color film, most successful and his most famous surrealistic "classic". The dialogues are few and short, and so the more the viewer understands by just watching the movie. "Belle de Jour" won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1967! It was very appreciated by film critics of the time and loved by many people. It has received a high average score on IMDb (7,8) although I personally would give it a better rating. It's a movie with a context that you don't watch very often at the cinema. It has things to teach you. Τhe most important is the fact that it respects the viewer without touching the limits of an adult movie as happened with this year's "Nymphomaniac". FJXLCYZMGQ8

  14. I love all of them but I voted "Too Lost In You". It's a great ballad but I prefer their uptempo hits.

"Good People" was released two weeks before in the cinema halls of my country and it's based on the homonymous novel by Marcus Sakey. The well-made official trailer seemed very intriguing and was the main reason to see it in the cinema. However, it seems that was not too popular to the public since the second week of viewing, it was limited only to large multiplex. Even though its script has direct contact with the bad situation of Greek households in recent years. The film is based on the economic problems of a couple who live in fear of losing their home because they owe a very large amount of money to the state. In addition, they are trying to have a child and are quite frustrated with the whole situation in which they are experiencing. However, they discover a bag with £ 200,000 at the home of their dead neighbour and decide to keep a part for them. However, nothing in life is given for free and they are embroiled with a gangster who absolutely must get the money back which are the result of a banditry. Basically, there is a dilemma to the viewer if he would do the same if he was in the position of the two protagonists. The author used this story aptly putting two characters experiencing real problems in their lives. But while in the beginning, it is good and the plot becomes more and more interesting and suspenseful, it ended up to be a parody after all injured people (gangsters & Franco & policeman) resurrected to shot the last shot. It happened at least 4 times. The two main characters (James Franco and Kate Hudson) began as the next door couple and they converted to Mr & Mrs Smith, devising unbelievable situations to riddance from the unscrupulous gangsters. The last twenty minutes reminded me quite a lot of the plot from "Home Alone". However, the two actors had chemistry and were convincing in their roles. The unknown Henrik Ruben Gkenz is the director of the film who was nominated for an Oscar in the category of "Best Short Film, Live Action" for "Bror, min bror" in 2000. However, there is not another major film to his credit and "Good People" is his first directorial work with Hollywood stars. One of the advantages of the movie was the soundtrack which fits incredibly in every scene. In all of the rest of the movie, however, was quite modest.. "Good People" is based on an interesting script idea but lost control at the end. However, its viewed pleasantly and it has some funny scenes which caused us hysterical laughter (especialy in the final scenes). Of course, it wasn't promoted as a comedy film but a drama thriller. If it had a better ending, the result would be at least good, but unfortunately is not far from the standards of a TV movie. Maybe this is the reason why it came out in limited theaters in America. It could be a good choice for home dvd with good company but in no case in the cinema. rC17twr50WU

  18. The "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" was definitely one of my favorite cartoons from my childhhod. I remember that I tried not to miss any episode and I have always found the 4 main heroes very amusing. Last August, the new film was released in cinemas in America and opened in first place at the Box Office! Although, it is a well known cartoon and comic, the Greek distribution company did the worst marketing for it. It wasn't promoted as it should have been, it had almost a month delay from the official release date and it was restricted to afternoon screenings from the second week onwards. Perhaps the younger generations are not familiar with this cartoon since they have grown up with new animation (Pokemon e.t.c) but the current generation of thirtysomething surely would have see the TMNT in their childhood. So, I wasn't suprised that there weren't many children and teenagers in the cinema hall since most viewers were over 30. The movie was just as I expected. It had some nice visual effects, pretty funny scenes and the plot was decent for a Hollywood movie. The role of the journalist April O 'Neil was performed by gorgeous Megan Fox and the four ninja turtles were processed with the best digital media. Do you remember only the original film in the 90s? The TMNT were performers that were wearing physical costumes and the spectacle was quite tragic and ridiculous. At least, in the new film the 4 ninja turtles were presented in the best possible way. Josh Appelbaum, André Nemec and Evan Daugherty co-wrote the script and Jonathan Liebesman is the director of the film. Having seen his previous works (Darkness Falls, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, Battle: Los Angeles and Wrath of the Titans), I think that he did a good job in "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles". He began to direct scary movies (I guess he is a fan) with low-budget but in recent years he began to work with the major movie studios, undertaking high-budget productions. However, I believe that his new work doesn't distinguish from his own personal directing. It looks like a movie that would have been directed by Michael Bay and it is no coincidence that the latter is one of the main producers! Apparently, Bay had the first and the final word in this project. However, that was not bad since many Bay films have always had very good cinematography, fast cutting and exciting scenes and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" could not be an exception. The "TMNT" is already one of the most successful films of this year. With a large enough budget ($125 million), it has collected about $465 million so far. It is even being played in many countries, it is having a good run in the Box Office. Although it received very negative reviews, it seems that they didn't affect the desire of the viewers to watch this movie in the cinema. It's not the kind of film that critics will be happy to watch just for enjoyment. They draw obviously some conclusions from the official trailer. I would say that it is primarily for the fans of the cartoon or comic but also for all those who consider cinema as a nice way of entertainment.
  19. Very tough decision. I love all of them. I voted "The One That Got Away".
  20. The truth is that we went to see another movie to the cinema and we watched this film instead. Of course, I knew the title since I had taken a look at it in a magazine about the cinema schedule but I mistook the "Chinese Puzzle/A French Woman in Manhattan" for "Two Days In New York". Both were released in the summer and I remembered that I had seen the official trailer of the last one but I didn't remember the title. So, "Two Days in New York" ended up being "Chinese Puzzle". "A French Woman in Manhattan" was the title given by the Greek distributor and to say the least, it was not the most suitable for the movie. Maybe, they should have had promoted it as as "A Frenchman in Manhattan" after the main character. He is the one who struggles to survive in the chaotic New York. I drew my conclusions as I stepped out of the cinema but when I came at my home, I searched for more information about this movie. Reading that it belongs to a trilogy, I changed somewhat my opinion because there was obviously content before the whole situation of the new movie. "Chinese Puzzle" is a lighthearted French film which was released in French theaters one year ago. The movie has famous actors/es (Audrey Tautou, Cecile de France, Romain Duris) and the story unfolds first in Paris and then in Manhattan. "Chinese Puzzle" is the third chapter of a trilogy, launched in 2002 as "L'Auberge Espagnole" (Spanish Apartment). The second chapter, "Les Poupées russes" (Russian Dolls) was released in 2005 and it took eight long years for the production to release the third part in the cinemas. Judging the film separately from the rest (I haven't watched the previous movies), the result was quite modest. Cédric Klapisch is not only the initiator of this script idea but he took care to carry it on the big screen. The film had some directing tricks that I found them pretty smart but the script completely lost control. It seemed like he added to the story whatever he had on his mind. It was like a dream which there are inconsistent things and unexplained situations that help the development of the events. Do not imagine that he put a lot of imagination into this film. On the contrary, he put realistic situations but the way that they were presented, was as if they are all random but eventually were all related. Maybe, some people in real life face some bizarre situations and some are quite prone to them but going to the cinema to see this, I would say that it is not my cup of tea. The story was not bad, but watching so many movies in cinema, I can figure out what it's really interesting to me and what's not. However, it had sympathetic interpretations, some funny scenes and some of the dialogue had something to tell. Nevertheless, it differs a lot from several other European movies I've seen in recent years (in a bad way). Especially from those who have participated in numerous festivals because "Chinese Puzzle" is one of these films which are intended for general consumption.. "Chinese Puzzle" received a nomination for "Best Music" at this year's Cesar awards but was defeated by "Michael Kohlhaas". It did pretty well at the French Box Office but it had a moderate success elsewhere it was released. Watching pleasantly because of its mad and eccentric content and it would be a nice alternative choice to a boring Sunday afternoon. However, it's not the movie you watch at the cinema even if the price of the ticket is a nice price. It only cost 2.50 euros.. B22e7FPhSpc
