And So It Goes
"And So It Goes" is a family comedy with two great actors who are always precious in cinema. Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton collaborated for the first time after a long cinema career. I hadn't watched the official trailer, but a good offer at a nearby neighborhood cinema and the fact that two charismatic actors starred, were two good reasons for watching it. However, it was not something special but had a pleasant time. "And So It Goes" is based on the well-known formula that “Hollywood” uses when it wants to create pleasant and sweet stories. It can all be wrong and the main characters have serious problems in their lives, but everything always gets better in the end and they live happily ever after. However, not like many of us. Of course, I do not blame the way they perceive life as it is always better when we look into the future with optimism than believing that everything will go wrong. Although, for some, everything is tragedy. The question is why are there these kinds of movies and the answer has two main answers. To entertain the audience who prefers these films and the profit of producers. They usually put little money in comedies and they earn much more at the end of the day. Although this rule is not necessarily because there were some movies that had very disappointing total earnings in the past. However, Americans always take risks when they do big-business so I think that it's not a big deal for them. In this particual case, they managed to create a pleasant movie, with nice performances from the actors and it was quite funny in some parts. The directing didn't have something unique although Rob Reiner is very experienced and already has several films to his credit. I can not believe that the creator of unsurpassed "Stand By Me" and "Misery" is the one who directed the insipid "The Story of Us", the silly "Alex & Emma" and the disappointing "Rumour Has It .. ". His movies are so hit or miss! As to "And So It Goes" is somewhere in the middle because it was lighthearted but it was entertaining too. The producers and the director managed to create a joyful atmosphere for the viewers but it didn't happen the same with the money received from it. It had a low opening weekend at the Box Office receipts and achieved to collect only half the money of the budget ($ 30.000.000). Outside the U.S.A, it didn't have better total earnings and this was quite disappointing for the producers. It seems, as well, that neither are the viewers very impressed with the movie and it received a very moderate average score on IMDb (5.5). I'm not sure if my friends and I will remember this movie for a long time but at least we laughed and had fun watching it. It's a suitable comedy film for the cold winter nights which are coming. The Maze Runner
"The Maze Runner" is a sci-fi adventure which was released three weeks ago in U.S and my country too (rare phenomenon). It's based on the novel of the same name by James Dashner (2009) which was soon adapted to the big screen. Having seen the impressive trailer in theaters, there was no reason to miss this film. "The Maze Runner" is based on a trilogy and the second film is already being planned for next year. The script reminded us somewhat of "The Hunger Games" and "Divergent" but it wasn't an exact copy of them. Although "Divergent" was published two years later than "The Maze Runner" and the latter encountered problems in the original release date (February 14). It was postponed to September 19. It had amazing sets and visuals effects and Wes Ball as novice did a very decent job. To imagine that his biography has only short films and there isn't w wholo lot of information about him so I guess that he is a young guy. Big production studios rarely trust very young directors, especially when a film belongs to the category of blockbuster. Fox, however, entrusted him after the earlier Ball presented a 3D-computer animated short film in a post-apocalyptic world. So, the production studio commissioned him an ambituous project that he could enable it to take it off visually. Of course, it helped him that the story had a very intriguing main idea in which mystery prevails from beginning to end. The truth is that it doesn't give a lot of information to the viewer and in the end it leaves you with several unanswered questions. It has another two sequels and probably the mystery unravels slowly. I suppose that some people will stay dissatisfied with it because they are impatient as my friends. However, I found the performances sympathetic, the photography was great and the plot holds your interest without tiring and repetitive moments (cliches etc.). The only drawaback for me was the choice of the "hunters" in the story because they were seemed childish enough (teenagers are hunted by large spiders in a labrinth? Seriously?). The authour could have more inspiration in this part of the film, without adding something so annoying and childish. "The Maze Runner" is an interesting film choice which is not limited to young people because of the post-apocalyptic content (otherwise..). It had one of the best openings for the September month at the Box Office and it has garnered very satisfactory earnings so far. When a relatively low budget manages to pick up six times over, it will presumably gave many smiles to the producers, director and the cast. It received favorable reviews worldwide and loved by many people (I assume teenagers because of the cast). It has also received a pretty good score on IMDb (7,5). In no case, it's better than "Hunger Games" and "Divergent" even though it has a better score than them. I really doubt the criteria of those who gave a very high score although it's quite good.

Classic Cinema 1960-1969
"The Battle of Algiers" is one of the most recognized films of the 60s. Ιt was critically acclaimed almost everywhere at the time and it is still being shown in some selected cinemas nowadays. It was mominated by the Academy of Oscar in three categories (Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film) but not in the same year! In 1967, it was proposed for the Oscar for Best Screenplay and Best Director and it was nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1969. However, it didn't win in any category but it won the "Golden Lion"at Venice Film Festival and excelled in many other film festivals at the time! Although I don't tend to watch older movies, after "Kapo", I was curious to see the top work of this director (Gillo Pontecorvo) which wasn't shown in France for five years (that does not suit us ..). "The Battle of Algiers" is a political thriller based on real events. It shows the effect of the FNL (National Liberation Front) in Algeria during the period 1954-1957 in order to have an independent country. Gillo Pontecorvo presented situations in that era as they really were, without using documents (visual or sound) of the events or adding scenes to thrill and impress the viewers. We watched a very interesting movie about the most important of individual human rights which is nothing else than freedom. This movie should be displayed in schools and universities for education purpose because it really opens our eyes without being a part of propaganda. The scenario was measured, without hyperboles and irrepressible chatter while the direction was very difficult to achieve. The filming took place in Algiers and attended by thousands of extras that this alone was very difficult to organize. However, it seems that the people of Algeria valued correctly the intentions of the director (in contrast to the French) and helped him enough to finish the film. The actors were good, but of course there were not academic interpretations apart from the performance of Jean Martin as Colonel Mathieu. The music of the film was composed by the great Ennio Morricone and the team of “Production Design” did an amazing job! "The Battle of Algiers" seems to have been loved by many people because it has a high rating in the authoritative source of IMDb! It's among the 250 best films of all time and it is recognized in other movie lists like Critics' Top 250 Films and Empire magazine's list of the 500 greatest movies of all time. Although political thrillers are usually full of information and evolve either very quickly or very slowly, I'd say that "The Battle of Algiers" was a shining exception. Gillo presented the facts at a normal pace without becoming tedious and he attracted his interest of only the transfer of these situations on the big screen! The result was excellent for its time (and not only) and it is not a random fact that this film is recognized by the connoisseurs of cinema! Watching first "Kapo" and after "The Battle of Algiers", you realise that this man made a huge step in his career. And we're talking about "Kapo" which was a very worthwhile movie. Wd5Pz8KJeU4

Into the Storm
"Into the Storm" is a disaster film from those Hollywood people that know better. In the 70s, these movies were at their forte (Earthquake, The Poseidon Adventure) and always made impressive numbers at the Box Office and the same was repeated in late '90s (Twister, Volcano, Dante's Peak) while there were some similar productions in the previous decade (for the DVD market). I'm a big fan of these movies and I really wanted to watch "Into the Storm" since it was released in America. The negative point about this film was the fact that projection during the second week, only a few theaters played it around my city. Therefore, we hadn't many choises to watch it. I guess that Greek viewers are not too crazy for disaster movies as Americans. The beginning of the film, I would say it was quite tragic, because the dialogues were completely infantile and the performances below average. When the giant tornadoes made their appearance, the film started to get better and the performances "came (thankfully) in the background". The tornadoes were doing pretty good via editing and some scenes were very exciting, but there were others who seemed quite fake. The script did not demand special inspiration although some information about the tornadoes were enlightening. It had also too many cliches during the plot (mainly relating to the family). However, it had the most impressive sound effects in this year. The tornado sounds so loud and intense that you thought you were in the place where they were touching down. Of course, the equipment of that cinema hall played an important role for this. Richard Armitage (Hobbit) was suitable for the leading role while co-star Sarah Wayne Callies was convincing enough for her role. I found the second roles very miserable. In no case, I found it better than "Twister" but for fans of this kind of film, it offers entertainment. I guess that director Steven Quale had this on his mind too. "Into the Storm" cost only $50 million which is considered a fairly low production for films that require elaborate sets and impressive visual effects. Nevertheless, it managed to outnumber his budget three times over ($150.000.000) and it is regarded as a blockbuster worldwide. It has received an average rating on IMDb (6,2) which is relatively close to my own rating for this movie. It is certainly not a bad film but unfortunately it struggles to surpass the frames of a video film with low production costs. A_kj8EKhV3w

Classic Cinema 1970-1979
I decided to make a topic about movies 1970-1979. I haven't watched many of them so far. However, I started to watch old movies so I will post my reviews here. If you really like these films, you can suggest your favourites here. You can also add movies which you don't like them. My first movie is "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is one of the horror movies that I really wanted to watch for a long time. I rarely watch dvds anymore, so it would be difficult for me to watch it at home. However, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" was screened as part of the "Athens International Film Festival – Opening Nights" and I finally had the chance to see it with image processing!! The fact that I had seen the 2003 remake, it played an important role since it remains the best horror movie I've watched in cinema. I remember that I had stress and anxiety during the plot, which it doesn't happen to me very often (especially after so many movies). However, the original film didn't excite me and horror fans probably overrated it. By the way, the room was full (after 40 years !!!) and the viewers didn't talk or comment during the film. They were so devoted to the slaughters. The direction of the film was quite simple and if I didn't know beforehand that it was given to Tobe Hooper, I would believe that an amateur directed it. Hooper wrote the script along with Kim Henkel. The dialogues were very tragic and some characters were quite colourful. They were slaughtered one after another in an short time. This didn't cause us any emotional distress because the characters were so uninteresting that we honestly couldn't feel sorrow for them. This was a major drawback of the film because you always want to indentify with the main characters. You always want the last few of them to be the most mature of the whole lot. It could have a better scenario because the central idea was pretty scary. In the beginning, the performances of the actors were a bit embarrasing because this kept us at a mild pace until the half of its length. However, the plot changed a lot and became unbearable. We constantly hear a prolong howl and the sense of terror was replaced by psychedelia and sadism. Literally, the protagonist made our ears explode (Marilyn Burns). She sounded like a pig before the slaughter house. Additionally, we listened to constantly groans and sobs that resembled more porn than a thriller. However, I don't want to be strict with this movie. It has some memorable scenes in cinema history (the slight opening of the door by Leatherface, a chase through the dense forest) and influenced so many subsequent filmmakers. It was the first horror movie that provoked so much (I guess religious people) and faced many difficulties in being viewed in different countries. That's why the director/writer used some funny/void scenes so as not to make it completely hardcore. The fact that it only cost $ 300,000, but picked up about $30 million was its greatest achievement! The soundtrack fits so perfectly to the movie. Very scary sounds. "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" was one of the most commercial films at the Box Office in 1974 (12th)! It has thousands of fans worldwide (maybe millions) and has received a pretty good score on IMDb (7,5). Personally I was not satisfied with the result and expected it to be more daunting. It didn't cause me any stress or fear as it happened with the 2003 remake. However, it remains one of the most popular horror movies that have been filmed and Leatherface still scares many people even in a thought. Vs3981DoINw

Total Points : 10 Judi Dench http://www.davidmorris.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Dame-Judi-Dench-Bond-Skyfall-Premiere-London-23.10.12-480x714.jpg What a great actress!!! I'm sure that everyone appreciates this woman because of her acting. Her total points doesn't represent her value (It happened many times in this rate). Judi Dench is an English actress. Her debut film was in ""The Third Secret" (1964). The 1966 BAFTA Award for "Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles" was made to Dench for her performance in "Four in the Morning" and this was followed in 1968 by a BAFTA Television "Best Actress Award" for her role in John Hopkins' 1966 BBC drama "Talking to a Stranger". She played in several of Shakespeare's plays in such roles as Ophelia in "Hamlet", Juliet in "Romeo and Juliet" and Lady Macbeth in "Macbeth". However, her most notable role was in James Bond films as "M". Dench became the first woman to portray the character, succeeding Robert Brown. In 1998, she won the Academy Award for "Best Supporting Actress" and the BAFTA Award for "Best Actress in a Supporting Role" as Queen Elizabeth I in "Shakespeare in Love". Among her Major awards, Dench has won an Oscar, a Tony, 6 Olivier's, 6 film BAFTA's, and 4 TV BAFTA's. She holds the record for most acting majors across all six American and British event's winning 18 and receiving 52 nominations!!! Overall in her career to date she has won 65 awards from 213 nominations!!! In Britain, Dench has developed a reputation as one of the greatest actors of the post-war period, mainly through her work in theatre, which has been her forte throughout her career. She has more than once been named number one in polls for Britain's best actor!!! Two members voted for this amazing woman! I have watched many of her films so far : GoldenEye (Great soundtrack, nice Bond film, very entertaining), Tomorrow Never Dies (It's not the best Bond film, the scipt was a bit silly), Shakespeare in Love (I know that many critics hate it because of the Academy Awards but it was a pleasant movie), The World Is Not Enough (Just entertaining), Chocolat (Nice story for the lovers of chocolate), Iris (very good performances, emotional story), The Shipping News (One of my favourite films that year, I didn't expect it so good), Die Another Day (fake visual effects, it had some tragic scenes), The Chronicles of Riddick (Vin Diesel with Judi Dench..? What happened there..?), Pride & Prejudice (Very nice story with great performances), Casino Royale (The Best Bond Film ever!), Notes on a Scandal (controversial story with nice performances), Quantum of Solace (Average Bond Film), Nine (It's not one of my favourite musicals but it was great in some parts), Jane Eyre (nice story with great performances), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Nice adventure), My Week with Marilyn (I really like this film because the performances were charismatic), Skyfall (One of the best James Bond Film, Great soundtrack) and Philomena (It's based on a true story and the performance of Dench totally deserved a nomination). I would suggest you to watch "GoldenEye" because it's a nice action film and Pierce Brosnan was good as James Bond, "Chocolat" because the story is quite funny, "Iris" because Iris Murdoch was a prominent author, "The Shipping News" because it's a decent social movie, "Pride & Prejudice" because it has very good direction and the performances were great, 'Casino Royale" because it's the most exciting Bond Film, "Notes on a Scandal" because it has an intriguing story (a sexual relationship between a teacher with her student), "Jane Eyre" because it's a nice romantic drama film, "My Week with Marilyn" because Marilyn deserved the attention as personality, "Skyfall" because it's one of the best James Bond Film and it's the most commercial of the series and "Philomena" because it's an intriguing story about Catholicism in Ireland sixty years ago!

Total Points : 10 Jennifer Aniston http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-94hhhewosQE/ToamSGEe0kI/AAAAAAAALLA/fWEtJkVVOwU/s1600/Jennifer_Aniston_Lifestyle_19.jpg Jennifer Aniston is one of the most likeable actresses. She is always sweet and I noticed that checking her photos. ^_^ Jennifer was born in Los Angeles. Her father is Greek (Ela re patrida!) and a native of Crete, while her mother was born in New York City. Aniston lived in Greece for a year with her family when she was chid. They moved to Pennsylvania, then to New York City. Her debut film was in "Leprechaun" (1993). However, her first successful role was on the television sitcom Friends (1994–2004) as Rachel Green. She earned an Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award!!! Aniston received a salary of $1 million per episode for the last two seasons of Friends!! In 1996, she was in Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers music video for "Walls". In 2001, Aniston was in Melissa Etheridge's music video for "I Want To Be In Love". In 2007, Forbes rated Aniston as one of the top 10 richest women in entertainment and estimated her net worth to be about $110 million. By June 20, 2010, Aniston's movies had grossed more than $1 billion in the United States and over $1.7 billion worldwide! She is known for her philanthropic works. She donated $500,000 to Doctors Without Borders, Haitian health care provider Partners in Health and AmeriCares and also participated in the megastar-studded Hope for Haiti Now telethon. Media and tabloids totally love this woman! Her marriage with Brad Pitt was was considered the rare Hollywood success. She married Pitt on July 29, 2000. However, they announced their separation five years later. On August 12, 2012, Aniston and Theroux announced their engagement. I like her acting but I think that she plays the same character every time (apart from a few exceptions). She is not a versatile actress. Two members had her name on their lists. I have watched many of her movies so far : Rock Star (entertaining film but forgettable too), Bruce Almighty (very funny movie, clever script), Along Came Polly (very funny, I enjoyed it a lot), Derailed (intriguing script, one of my favourite movies of hers), Rumor Has It...(I thought that it would be interesting but it was boring and not funny), The Break-Up (Nice movie about relationships), Marley & Me (decent movie about love for animals, emotional ending), He's Just Not That into You (nice movie about relationships), Love Happens (Tragic script, the main character was obssessed with his bird..), The Bounty Hunter (Dreadful, one the worst movies that I've ever watched at the cinema), Just Go with It (very funny and pleasant), Horrible Bosses (Hilarious) and We're the Millers (Hilarious). I would suggest you to watch "Bruce Almighty" because Jennifer had great chemistry with Jim Carrey and it has many funny scenes, "Along Came Polly" because you will enjoy it a lot, "Derailed" because it's unpredictable, "The Break-Up" because it's very meaningful movie, "Marley & Me" because you will adore it if you have a doggie, "He's Just Not That into You" because it tells the truth about relationships, "Just Go With It" because it has a funny script, "Horrible Bosses" because I guess that everyone would have had a horrible boss in the past and "We're the Millers" because it's crazy as hell!

Total Points : 9 Laura Linney http://cdn2.crushable.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/iphotos180555-Laura-Linney-newscom-404x590.jpg I think that this woman was incredible that era (2003-2005). Laura Linney is an American actress (film, television, and theatre). She was born in Manhattan. Her debut film was "Dave". She had a small role. However, her first successful role was in "Kongo" (1995). She also played in "Primal Fear" and "The Truman Show" which they were critically acclaimed movies. In 2000, Linney was nominated for an Academy Award for "Best Actress" for her role in the film "You Can Count on Me". In 2003, Linney appeared in several notable films, including "Mystic River", "Love Actually", and "The Life of David Gale". She was nominated for the Academy Award for "Best Supporting Actress" for her role in the film "Kinsey" the following year. In 2005, she starred in the horror film "The Exorcism of Emily Rose". In 2007, Linney received a third Academy Award nomination for "The Savages", this time for Best Actress! During her career, she has received four Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Linney doesn't care about popularity and publicity that's why her personal life is not on the front page of tabloids..Randomfurlong is her best fan here! I have watched some of her movies so far : "Congo (I don't remember every detail of it because I watched it 15 years ago, it wan't bad though), The Truman Show (Very good movie, nice direction, clever script, emotional performances), The Life of David Gale (One of my favourite movies that year, interesting script), Mystic River (Nice movie but I didn't like the ending), Love Actually (This movie is one of the best for the first date), Kinsey (intriguing main character but it was a little bit boring), The Exorcism of Emily Rose (Very scary movie but a little bit slow) and The Other Man (oh my gosh, that was very bad..we laughed so much in the cinema although it was a drama). I would suggest you to watch "The Truman Show" because Jim Carrey shines there and Laura was also very good, "The Life of David Gale" because it's one of the best movies about death penalty and the performances were great (Kevin Spacey, Kate Winslet and Laura Linney), "Mystic River" because it was one of the most critically acclaimed movies that year (2003), "Kinsey" because it's based on sex and realtionships and I'm sure that everyone cares for them and "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" because it was too scary in some parts..
