Son Of Saul
"Son of Saul" is a dramatic film that was released in my country's cinemas last autumn. It made its official debut at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prize (Grand Prix), the International Critics' Prize (FIPRESCI), the François Chalais Prize and the Vulcan Award for Best Sound! The film was applauded by everyone and made a sensation with its content. How dramatic can a story be? The answer is given through out this particular film. "Son of Saul" takes place in the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp in October 1944. The main character of the story is Saul, a Jewish-Hungarian, who is forced to help the Nazis carry out their unwholesome designs. Saul is a member of the Sonderkommando, composed by Jewish prisoners, which essentially assumed the dirty work of the Nazis. They were those who accompanied the Jews in the concentration camp, undressed them, cared to be there for them and then led them to the gas chambers. Once they die, Sonderkommando had to take the corpses to the furnace, to burn them and cleanse the area of the gas chambers to receive the next Jewish. At one point, Saul, while working in one of the crematory, finds a half dead boy who believes that he is his son. However, the Nazis will kill him and Saul will try to bury it as required by his religion. "Son of Saul" is a movie that will cause very unpleasant feelings to the audience. The Hungarian László Nemes managed to do a great job directing, who turned it into a very realistic way, inevitably creating a heavy and suffocating atmosphere in the movie theater. The camera follows the protagonist in all the scenes and the movie picture is quite limited. It had dark picture and the scenery was very frightening. Frankly, some of these respective images I have only seen in domestic animals slaughterhouses, in general, and dogs slaughterhouses in China through the videos of animal welfare organizations. The human perversity dominates completely in this film, which reminds us how sick and corrupted minds the Nazis had. László Nemes intentionally blurred the image scenes that had to do with naked corpses and the gas chambers but he kept the sound at high volumes, leaving the viewer to imagine by himself what really happened in the extermination camps. The interpretation of Géza Röhrig was great although he is not a professional actor and the exquisite cinematography of Mátyás Erdély played a key role in the film's result. "Son of Saul" is definitely one of the films that will leave their mark in the seventh art. We may have seen many movies about Nazi concentration camps but this has been filmed in such a way that stands out from all the rest. It was the official submission for Hungary for the "Best Foreign Language Film" and it was one of the five nominated films for a Golden Globe in the same category. It was considered to be the undisputed favorite for the Golden Statuette since it received excellent reviews from critics worldwide. So, it was obvious that it would win the Academy Award. It had a fairly good collections process in my country in the first weeks of release although it was played by a small cinema circuit. It is a film that you do not have to miss!

I just noticed that nobody posted a topic about this movie. I played this game twelve years ago. I found it a little bit difficult and complicated. However, the movie looks very impressive based on its official trailer. I'm going to watch it tonight!! 2Rxoz13Bthc

Bond 24: 'Spectre'
"Spectre" was released in cinemas worldwide last autumn and it was arguably one of the most hyped films of last year! It was the 24th film of the legendary agent and its production cost millions dollars for the film studio Eon Productions. Of course, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures with Columbia Pictures contributed too. The role of James Bond was embodied by Daniel Craig once again while Lea Seydoux played the new Bond Girl, Dr. Madeleine Swann. I cannot say that I was mad to watch it as many people because I did not like "Skyfall" very much -an unpopular opinion- and also its official trailer did not convince me that I would see something very impressive. However, "Spectre" was quite remarkable and it was definitely one of the best films of the British secret agent! In the new film, James Bond faces a criminal secret organization known as SPECTRE -SPecial Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion. The film develops on five different areas such as Mexico City, Rome, Austrian Alps, Tangier and London, where James Bond tries to find “the brain” of the organization, Ernst Stavro Blofeld or Franz Oberhauser, which is played by Christoph Waltz. On his side, he will have the two permanent colleagues, Miss Moneypenny, played by Naomie Harris, and Q, played by Ben Whishaw, in order to find the daughter of an old opponent, Mr White, played by Jesper Christensen, who knows something for SPECTRE. At the same time in London, the new head of the National Security Centre, Max Denbigh, who is played by Andrew Scott, challenges the role of Bond in the secret services and MI6 in general, which is lead by the new M, wonderfully played by Ralph Fiennes. The acclaimed director Sam Mendes took over a James Bond film for second consecutive time after the successfull commercial "Skyfall"! His work was amazing and the overall effect reminded me of the good old films of the series. "Spectre" had intriguing scenario, elaborate montage, excellent cinematography and great photography. It didn't contain many action scenes because the writers gave greater emphasis to the film's characters. Daniel Craig gave his best performance as James Bond whilst the seductive Lea Seydoux was one of the best Bond Girls in terms of beauty, character and talent. Something that I will not say the same is Monica Bellucci, although she was thought as the most sexy woman of the Nineties. Her role was quite small -a little more than that of Tonia Sotiropoulou in Skyfall- and it seemed to me that her chin went back and forth when she spoke. She also had pretentious sensuality and she lost enough compared with other Bond Girls. Perhaps if she had participated in any of the 90's Bond films, she would be by far the best! Christoph Waltz was absolutely convincing in the evil role while Dave Bautista reminded me of Jaws. They were both undead. Moreover, "Spectre" had very good soundtrack and it was an apt choice the song that played in the opening, Writing's On The Wall. Although many resented this song, I found that it was incredibly sticky with the content of the movie. Let alone, the interpretation of Sam Smith is breathtaking and it totally deserved the Academy Award for Best Original Song! "Spectre" was one of the most remarkable productions of last year! It cost $ 250 million and its total revenues were more than $880 million worldwide. It may not exceed a total of tickets as "Skyfall", but it is the second most commercial film of the series! It received mixed reviews from the experts of the film industry and it has garnered an unfair average score by IMDb users (6,7). The hardcore fans of "Skyfall" will be definitely unhappy with the new film, but personally I liked it very much. It was a Bond film with substance and it had the appropriate action doses so it does not end up a mindless movie with illustration wrapper.

European Cinema 2013-2015
"Tales of Tales" is a fantasy film that came out in my country's cinemas in the middle of November. It originally participated in the competition program of the Cannes festival where it competed against eighteen other ambitious productions. Although it did not win the coveted "Palme d'Or", it received positive feedback from the attendees. I had not seen the official trailer but neither did I know about the plot of the movie before I went to the multiplex to watch it. However, the title seemed quite intriguing to me and the cast consisted of famous and talented actors/actresses. "Tales of Tales" is based on a collection of tales by the Neapolitan poet Giambattista Basile. The film presents three different stories on three different kingdoms. In all the stories, the kings / queens are possessed by passions, desires and obsessions that led them to unexpected situations. Italian Matteo Garrone took over the directing of the film and he also wrote the screenplay with Edoardo Albinati, Ugo Chiti and Massimo Gaudioso. His work is admirable and successfully transferred the magic of these tales on the big screen. "Tales of Tales" had gorgeous costumes, magnificent scenery, wonderful landscapes and beautiful pictures with many colors. It is a film that will surely fascinate all spectators with its visual piece. However, because the content of some scenes is particularly provocative and violent, I would say that the film is primarily intended for older age groups. Neverthless, it was pleasant to view during its evolution and it successfully combines drama with comedy. "Tales of Tales" was one of the most underrated movies of last year! It was not promoted it as it should have been and for this reason, it had a disappointing box office result. The same, of course, happened in my country, having been viewed in a small cinema circuit during its second week of release. Personally I quite liked it because it had original directing and it contained three unknown tales for the general public. Besides, how many times do you need to watch the hackneyed fantastic tales such as Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast etc in a film form until we are all bored with them? At least, "Tales of Tales" was quite special and unique! UvkgHrzodTY

Bridge of Spies
"Bridge of Spies" is the penultimate film by Steven Spielberg which was shown in my country's cinemas last November. It was inspired by true events and it is based on a book by James B. Donovan, "Strangers on a Bridge". "Bridge of Spies" marks the fourth collaboration of Steven Spielberg with Tom Hanks and the script was signed by Joel and Ethan Coen. I have several times expressed my admiration for the talent of Spielberg in my earlier -Greek- review, since I appreciate him enormously as a creator and I consider him the best director of his generation! So, there was no way to miss his “latest” work on the big screen. "Bridge of Spies" takes place during the Cold War. The main character of the story is James B. Donovan, a successful lawyer who specializes in insurance matters, who will be entrusted to represent a Soviet spy who was detained by the CIA. James B. Donovan will defend the Soviet spy as required by law, but he will face the reactions of the American government and the American public, after they regard the accused as an enemy of their country. Things will change very soon for Donovan, when an US spy plane pilot will be caught by the Soviets and CIA will appoint him as a spy exchange negotiator. "Bridge of Spies" is a fairly interesting movie that takes us into the Cold War climate that prevailed at that time between the two most powerful countries in the world. The directing of Steven Spielberg was very attentive and Tom Hanks was excellent in his role once again! "Bridge of Spies" had additionally well-written script, convincing sets, elaborate montage and beautiful photography. Even if the movie lasts 141 minutes, it did not tire at any point the viewers after it manages to keep the suspense unabated until the last scene. In case you do not know what exactly happened. "Bridge of Spies" is definitely one of the best productions I had seen last year! It is based on a very good story and its content is quite enlightening. You do not need to be a fan of spy movies to go to see this movie, after it was shot in such a way that was seen pleasantly by all viewers (young and old, men and women, etc.). The film got great reviews worldwide and it has acquired a high average score by IMDb users (7,6). It was nominated for six Academy Awards in which Mark Rylance won the Golden Stauette for "Best Supporting Actor".

European Cinema 2013-2015
"Dheepan" is a French drama film that was released in my country in last November. "Dheepan" won the Palme d'Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, made particular sense to the public and won good reviews! It was the most current movie that was shown during that period after discussing the hot topic of immigration. Dheepan is a former soldier of the Tamil Tigers, who agrees with a woman and a minor orphan girl to pretend to be a family in order to go to Europe with false passports. All three are trying to escape from the civil war in Sri Lanka. So, they will end up in a disreputable suburb of Paris and they will start a new life which would soon prove that it is not so far away from the horrors they experienced in their homeland. "Dheepan" is a very interesting movie. The Frenchman Jacques Audiard is the director of the film who was especially moved when he received the Palme d' Or by the Cohen brothers. He did a great job and he really deserved this award! Having seen his old cinematic work "Rust and Bone" on the big screen four years ago, I can say that this man is one of the most talented European directors of his generation! "Dheepan" had a well-written script, elaborate montage and beautiful photography. It is a touching story but it is not melodramatic and puzzles enough the audience with its content. The three main actors had not previously acted in a big production but they did just fine in "Dheepan" after being very convincing in their roles. The evolution of the story do no tire the viewer and the finale is by no means predictable. Of course, this might baffle/surprise some viewers but it is perfectly justifiable considering the past of the main character of the story. "Dheepan" is a remarkable film and it is one of the best European productions of last year. It is a film that spreads many messages to the audience and raises a serious issue that it is at the forefront of the news in recent years. The director and the writers keep a neutral attitude towards the story and the viewer figures out the conclusions by themselves. Just not to be ultraconservative."Dheepan" had decent earnings in my country's Box Office but it was not so successful as other winning movies from Cannes such as Winter Sleep, Blue Is the Warmest Colour, Amour, The Tree of Life and White Ribbon. Nevertheless, it deserves the attention of the public. QpXHi7TGYpg Love it! g9Etizda3cM

European Cinema 2013-2015
"Youth" is a drama that was released in my country's cinemas in the middle of November. It premiered at last year's Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme d'Or. Although it was not the winning film, it received very positive reviews and comments from the connoisseurs of film industry and later, it was screened in other renowned worldwide festivals too. "Youth" is the latest film by Italian director Paolo Sorrentino, after his overrated "The Great Beauty", which won the Oscar for "Best Foreign Language Film" two years ago. To be honest, I did not want to see his new work, although I knew about the eclectic cast. Despite this, I decided to see it on the big screen and finally, I realized that "Youth" was a very pleasant, surprising film. "Youth" takes place in a luxury hotel in the Swiss Alps. The two main characters are Fred Ballinger and Mick Boyle, who remain close friends for many years and take a holiday at this resort. Fred Ballinger is an accomplished composer and conductor, who has retired from active composing. While Mick Boyle is a famous director who imagines his new film and feels that it will be on the top of his career. However, Fred Ballinger accepts an invitation from Queen Elizabeth to return to the stage for one last concert although he initially will reject it. "Youth" is quite a philosophical film that does not tire the viewers at any point. Although it is considered a drama, it contains several comic elements that create a very pleasant atmosphere in the room. "Youth" was very well directed, it had elaborate editing, excellent cinematography and beautiful soundtrack. Paolo Sorrentino not only took over the directing of the film but he also signed the script. The dialogues were clever and cynical while the characters were very amiable and highly structured. The performances of the two actors were very good, Rachel Weisz persuaded in her role once again and Jane Fonda gave a dynamic presence in the film. In my opinion, all of them deserved a nomination in the latest Oscars. "Youth" is a film that highlights the contradictions of life and presented in such an inspired way that there is no case not to seduce the public. "Youth" was undoubtedly one of the most remarkable and most thoughtful productions of last year! The brilliant cast, the beautiful photography and the smart directorial shots of Sorrentino contributed to the surprising result of the film. "Youth" got very good reviews for its content and it could have claimed the coveted Golden Statuette. It had a successful box office run in Greek Box Office and it was played for many weeks in the cinemas. Maybe I was biased towards this director, but after "Youth", I have completely revised my opinion. I wouldn't say that it is a masterpiece, but it certainly stands out enough from the other films of its kind! -T7CM4di_0c Magical Song :magic: M7yYMfjVNJc

Drama & Social Films
"El Club" is a Chilean production which was released in my country last November. It originally participated on the 65th Berlin International Film Festival where it won the Silver Bear-Jury Grand Prix and received very positive feedback on its content. Later, it was proposed as the official submission by Chile for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and excelled in some other film festivals. It was the second time that I saw a Chilean movie on the big screen, after the amazing "No” and I can say that this country has pretty good cinema. "El Club" evolves in a small beach town of Chile. There, a group of elderly priests live isolated in a home and they are away from the circles of the Catholic Church because they each sinned in a different way. A nun cohabits with them who supervises them and cares for them in an everyday level. However, when a new priest requests space in their home, who also carries a sinner / guilty past, he will have ups and downs in this particular "club". "El Club" is a very interesting film that aims to highlight the hypocrisy and corruption of the Catholic Church. The director Pablo Larrain was not only limited to the visual part of the film but he also wrote the script with Guillermo Calderón and Daniel Villalobos. He participated in the production too. Having seen his earlier cinematic work, "No" (2012), I conclude that this man has a remarkable talent and he always wants to tell us something with his respective films. He used very aptly this dramatic story, in order to criticize the wrongs of the Catholic Church, but of all religions in general. "El Club" had a particular direction, caustic script, good performances and beautiful photography. However, it had some provocative scenes and strong language that will certainly offense an amount of viewers, especially the very conservative. Yet, it is a great film that rightly received positive reviews and has dealt with a problem that has shocked many times the public such as child abuse by priests, selling babies to rich families, etc. Besides, there are very few movies, which traded a serious issue in the cinema in the last 15 years so "El Club" is an ideal choice for all those who looking for a little more in terms of religious beliefs. "El Club" is a remarkable film that deserves the attention of viewers. It is one of the best films I saw last year and it could have been one of the five nominated films in the category for "Best Foreign Language Film”. Although, in this category, there have been "crimes" in the past such as "La Grande Bellezza", "Ida" etc. It has received very good reviews from various newspapers and magazines worldwide and it has acquired a high average score by IMDb users (7,3). Finally, in my country, it had a satisfactory course collections and it was displayed in some selected cinemas for a long time. e8c2DYoF7lA

Drama & Social Films
"45 Years" is a dramatic social film that was released in my country’s cinemas during last autumn. However, the film made its official premiere in my city under the 21th Athens International Film Festival 'Opening Nights’ last September. Initially, it premiered at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival where it competed in the main part of the festival, claiming the biggest prize which is the Golden Bear. Although this award went to the Iranian "Taxi", "45 Years" was honored with two major awards: "Best Actor" and "Best Actress". "45 Years" is based on the short story "In Another Country" by David Constantine. The central characters of the story are Jeff and Kate, who have been married for 45 years, which is real achievement and they are getting ready to celebrate their anniversary, having a party for family and friends. However, a news story on Jeff will cause their long relationship to get turned upside down. As preparations for the anniversary will continue, Jeff will start to change his behavior and habits and Kate’s confidence will begin to falter. Even though "45 Years" seems like a dull and melancholy story, I can tell you that it kept my interest from beginning to end. It had a very interesting development and the script was well written. Andrew Haigh not only took over the directorial piece of film but further developed the short story of David Constadine. Andrew Haigh made his particular job to shake somehow the audience. Nothing can be safe in human relations and usually all couples keep their guilty secrets. However, when they come to the surface over time, can they stay together or the separation occurs as a result? Is the one that has invested the most always gets hurt the most? Moreover, the director/writer wants to tell us about the length of time a relationship can be. The number by itself does not say much although the majority of people believe the opposite. "45 Years" also stands out for well-structured characters and very strong interpretations. Charlotte Rampling was excellent in the role of Kate and also great was Tom Courtenay in the role of Jeff. "45 Years" may have been simple and unadorned when it comes to directing but the story was filled with meaning and substance. "45 Years" is a remarkable film that has to convey several messages to viewers. It has received very positive feedback worldwide and many critics believed that Charlotte Rampling was definitely one of the big favorites for the Oscar for Best Actress. The film has won some film festival awards and was nominated in three categories at the European Film Awards, including Best European Actor, Best European Actress and Best European Screenwriter! It is a story that will certainly cause concern to the audience, of course, provided that they are matured enough to understand it. Tg5cpiX18TA

Classic Cinema 1990-1999
The truth is that I have already watched many movies from this decade. However, I will post a review for every "new" movie because there are plenty of them. My first movie is "In the Mouth of Madness". "In the Mouth of Madness" is a horror film that was released in America in February 1995. The film was directed by one of the greatest horror creators, John Carpenter, and the script is written by Michael de Luca. I knew the title, but I did not know anything about the plot of this movie. Although its title speaks for itself about the content of the film, it is an interesting way. The central character of the story is John Trent, who works as a private insurance investigator. When the famous horror book author, Sutter Kane, literally disappears from the face of the earth, the publisher who represents him will ask John Trent to search for him as fast as he can. However, this will not be easy for Trent, since he will end up in an East Coast city, named Hobbes End, and whatever he will experience, are from Kane’s last novel. Meanwhile, fans of Kane's books are starting to go crazy and the case of his disappearance taking other dimensions. "In the Mouth of Madness" reminded me of the stories of my favorite author, Stephen King. Incidentally, there was a reference of his name during the course of the film. However, the writer Michael de Luca was influenced by the novels of another famous author of horror, H. P. Lovecraft. "In the Mouth of Madness" was well-directed, it had elaborate editing and amazing makeup. Sam Neil was the perfect choice for the lead role and the interpretations of the other actors were quite nice. Of course, I cannot forget the fact that all the scenes showing the extras were simply tragic and sloppy. It was a reminiscent of bad b-movies of the 80s and the director had to have noticed this. However, I believe that the well-written script of de Luca was the strongest point of the film, since this story manages to confuse the viewer to a very large degree. As incredible as it sounds. The protagonist oscillates between sanity and madness and the events overturn every time. "In the Mouth of Madness" is a pretty good horror film of the 90s. Do not expect to be scared with what you see, but at least the film maintains a good atmosphere of mystery from beginning to end. It has been loved by many fans of this genre and many consider it as the best film work from Carpenter. Yet it failed to gather many viewers in cinemas and it had a disappointing course at Box Office. It barely exceeded its budget. Too bad, however, because the exact opposite thing happens in meaningless and stupid films of our time such as Paranormal Activity. "In the Mouth of Madness" is a good film proposal for all those who are looking for something more in horror movies. mHJl2V1sMxc

The Lobster
"The Lobster" is an allegorical romance story that was released in the dark halls of my country over seven months ago. "The Lobster" had a lot of hype one year ago because it won the Jury Prize at the 68th Cannes Film Festival! It is the English-speaking film debut of Greek director, Yorgos Lanthimos, who had great artistic sense with Dogtooth six years ago! In his latest film, he gathered famous and renowned actors, giving them the opportunity to participate in a very special cinematic work. "The Lobster" takes place in a future society where lonely people are driven to a hotel in order to find their match in 45 days. If they fail, they will transform to an animal of their choice and they will end up into the Forest. The main character of the story is the recently divorced, David, who escapes from the Hotel and hides in the Forest, convinced that it would be better there. However, he will realize very quickly that things are not as he initially thought, as there are some rules that are against human freedom in there too. "The Lobster" is an original story that speaks to us about love and loneliness experienced by people either living it deliberately or not. Lanthimos along with Efthymis Philippou wrote the particular story after several reflections and discussions, among them being things about humans, lifestyle, behavior and relationships. They aptly used the specific script idea to confuse their audience through their special view. "The Lobster" had interesting directing, elaborate editing and sympathetic interpretations. However, I believe that the essence prevailed over the image, which is rarely seen in English-speaking movies these days. Moreover, the two creators added some funny scenes but also some comic dialogues in order not to create an unbearable atmosphere in the movie theater. Despite this, I felt that the atmosphere fell considerably in the last half hour when it should not have happened. The peak always comes at the ending. Apart that does not clarify what exactly happens in the final scene, leaving the viewers with unanswered questions. Apparently both writers wanted to divide their audience by keeping an impartial attitude for the finale of the movie, but why should this have happened? From the moment you begin to write a script, I imagine that you want to end up somewhere specific. "The Lobster" is based on a very interesting script idea that will cause great impression on viewers and will certainly divide the audience. Besides, this is the aim of art, right? It has received very positive comments from connoisseurs of cinematic space all over the world and it has assembled a decent rating from users of IMDb (7,2). However, some of our local viewers were furious at movie sites. To be honest, though, I did not go crazy with the evolution of the story, but nonetheless I rewarded the effort of the Greek director, which was quite different from the other movies that I saw last year. Rather than seeing the same characters/heroes each time, it is better to watch something alternative on the big screen.
