Mr. Holmes
"Mr. Holmes" was released in my country’s cinemas in the middle of July! Although that time period was the worst in Greece since the regime change (Metapolitefsi), "Mr Holmes" managed to attract a respectable proportion of the public to the cinema. It had the biggest earnings in the Greek Box Office in the first week of its release and it was one of the main reasons to see it on the big screen! Mr. Holmes is based on the novel "A Slight Trick of the Mind" by Mitch Cullin" and starring the beloved actor Ian McKellen! The film takes places in a British province two years after the end of World War II, where the 93 years old man, Sherlock Holmes, returns home after a short business trip to Japan. He deals with his beehives and he has as sole companion the steward of his house, Mrs. Munro, and her young son, Roger. However, the state of his health is very serious and is going through the last stages of his life. It's been nearly 30 years since his last case and he tries to recall why that made him resigns. Little Roger will be the one who helps him unravel this mystery, since he develops a special friendship with the overage Holmes. To be honest, the film left me mixed feelings when it finished. It was not bad in any way, but I did not find something intriguing about its story. However, the directing was very good and Ian McKellen was excellent once again! I think that he was the best choice for this role and he could have impersonated Sherlock Holmes when he was much younger too. The director, Bill Condon, did a great job, in which the magnificent photography played an important factor. However, I firmly believe that the visual part of the film literally overshadowed the plot, which did not remind of us the unique stories of the legendary detective. I understand that the author of the novel wanted to show us the vulnerable side of the literary hero but he failed to create mystery and suspense in his latter case. I found more interesting the dialogues with young Roger regarding beehives and bees -some information was enlightening- than its main story. "Mr. Holmes" has a remarkable production which unfortunately is not based on an interesting script idea. However, it seems pleasant due to the very good performances and the intense colors that inundate the image. I imagine it could have been loved by several spectators because they saw the human side of the famous literary character but personally I prefer to know him as I knew him as a child. I cannot understand the obsession that all these writers / authors have with the sensitive aspects of the heroes. We have seen this many times in comic book film adaptations and the result was not always the nicest. Let's better leave the existing heroes in their peace, and let’s try to invent new characters that will be based mainly on their emotional side.

'Dark Places' | TBA
"Dark Places" was released in my country four months ago! It is based on the homonymous novel by Gillian Flynn, which became globally famous with "Gone Girl". The protagonist of the film is Charlize Theron. While up and coming Hollywood stars participate in the cast such as Nicholas Hoult and Chloë Grace Moretz. I had read the plot of the movie on a movie site before I went to watch it but I had not seen the official trailer. The main heroine of the story is Libby, who is 8, who sees her mother, along with her sisters, get murdered in their own home. Believing that a satanic sect consisting of people of the area are responsible for the massacre, Libby would testify against her brother, who is one of its members. After 28 years, Libby will review the case after the urging of a peculiar club, consisting of amateur detectives who spend their free time investigating horrendous crimes. Some members of the club are convinced that her brother is innocent and is unjustly in prison. So, Libby has to face her past and she will have to recall the events of that night who mercilessly stigmatized her. Anyone who has read the book will be waiting to see a movie with evocative atmosphere of mystery and plenty of suspense regarding the events of that fateful night. However, "Dark Places" proceeded very slowly and it did not have the tension and suspense that a story like this should have had. The interpretations of the actors were subdued while their characters were indifferent and meaningless. The director of the film is the Frenchman Gilles Paquet-Brenner, whose filmography does not show anything special, but according to his own words, "Dark Places" was the movie that he wanted to turn into a movie long ago. So, I guess that he gave it his best. However, I cannot say that I was impressed by his work, since "Dark Places" did not have anything special about its content. Let alone, the directing looked more like a TV movie than a film adaptation. Nevertheless, Charlize Theron was quite good although several readers of the novel were disappointed with her pick in this specific role. Personally, I think that a good actor can perform any role and Charlize has amply proved it over the years. Additionally, the script was well-written and there was a twist at the end, something that happened in another novel by Gillian Flynn, "Gone Girl". With the difference, however, that "Gone Girl" started very strongly but it has a disappointing finale. While "Dark Places" was very warm until the middle, but towards the end, it gained some interest. Unfortunately, "Dark Places" was not as good as expected. I was confident that I would see a tight thriller with scary scenes, but it was a drama with strong social elements. When I watched it in July, it hadn’t been released in the USA yet. However, I was sure that it wouldn’t be successful in the Box Office. The average score that it has gathered in "IMDb" is quite modest (6.3) while it didn’t receive the best reviews by experts in the film industry. If it had more tension and suspense, it would pique my interest, but based on what I saw, it wasn’t random that at some point I fell asleep in the comfortable red armchairs of the multiplex.

European Cinema 2013-2015
"The Blue Room" is a French production that was released in my country last July. Initially, it was screened at last year's Cannes Film Festival, in the "Un Certain Regard" section, which competed with 19 other films! It is based on the novel by the distinguished Belgian writer Georges Simenon! I had seen the official trailer a few months ago and I found it quite interesting. Moreover, in recent years we rarely see erotic thrillers on the big screen and I think summer is the best time to watch these kinds of films, either at the cinema or at home. "The Blue Room" evolves in a small provincial town in France. Esther and Julien meet secretly in a hotel room. They're both married, but the forbidden passion has overcome them and they constantly have unbridled sex. However, this will not last too long, after both of them will be found guilty of two crimes. The director of the film is Mathieu Amalric, who wrote the script along with Stéphanie Cléau. However, their contribution was not confined only there after impersonating the two main roles of the story. Despite this, they didn’t manage to create a remarkable film since they paid close attention to love scenes. Honestly, I have not seen more nerveless movie in the cinema. There was no tension and suspense, the plot progressed very slowly and the story was not as intriguing as it looked in the official trailer. Almost all the actors interpreted their roles with an unprecedented apathy and dialogues were few and meaningless. Although it had short duration, I begged for it to finish as early as possible, especially after the brief intermission which the open air cinema did at the half of the film. It may have had good photography and soundtrack but the overall result failed to get our attention. Is it possible to direct an erotic thriller with so indifferent characters? Honestly, what did they expect to tell us with this story? The two writers / actors are a couple in reality too. I imagine that they had the desire to create a film in order to make widely known their sexual life (exhibitionists alert!), but I cannot understand why the viewers should have an opinion about it? I am sure that the majority of them or at least a large portion of the public did not choose to see it for this reason. Although there were some erotic shots in the official trailer. Nowadays, nudity is abundant on the internet and do not need to resort to the movie theater to see something sensual. "The Blue Room" has received a modest average score by IMDb users (6.3), which means that few were those who liked the content enough. "The Blue Room" is certainly one of the most disappointing films of the year. It gives the impression that you will see a tight thriller and you end up seeing a lackluster story. Apart that does not explain what happened in the end and you live with unanswered questions. At least, the jury of "Un Certain Regard" didn’t give the prize to this mediocrity and they chose the exceptional "White God"! AXru7gOWV-I

Terminator: Genisys
"Terminator: Genisys" was released in my country’s cinemas the last week of June. It was considered one of the biggest blockbusters of this summer. Firstly, because it is based on the successful movie of the 80s and secondly because it costs a total of $155 million! In "Terminator: Genisys", the imperious Arnold Schwarzenegger returns, who became widely known worldwide as "Terminator" in his 1984 homonymous film! However, the most successful film of the series remains the amazing "Terminator: Judgment Day" which was released in 1991 and it was the most commercial movie that year. Furthermore, it received very positive reviews from experts in the film industry and it won four Golden Statuettes, including Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Makeup. The new film series initially evolved in 2029, where Human Resistance leader John Connor managed to defeat Skynet. However, the machines, just before their defeat, will send back in time (1984) an advanced Terminator to kill the mother of John Connor, Sarah Connor, so that the future will be changed. Kyle Reese, who is the right hand of John Connor, volunteered to travel back in time to protect Sarah Connor and prevent the design of Skynet. Until here the story is easy to understand and the case is not too different from the original movie. However, the two screenwriters, Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier, took care to add many twists and action-packed scenes to the script while they revealed hidden aspects of the main characters. Nevertheless, all that we saw was so confusing that the result of the story lost its substance. "Terminator: Genisys" had stunning visual effects, very loud sound, beautiful photography and elaborate montage! However, everything evolved so quickly, you did not have enough time to understand what was happening in each scene. This was the main drawback of the film since it didn’t give you the time to think about the rapidly changing scenario. The director Alan Taylor did a great job in the technical part of the film, but it had as a consequence to outshine the plot. I understand that the producers of Paramount Pictures and the director wanted to turn a new Terminator worthy of the first two films, but it’s pointless to do it when its plot was accompanied by a complex scenario. They could have limited the action which constituted 95% of the film, so that the events are explained in the form of narrative or discussion that would bring the protagonists together. This would have as an effect, to make a remarkable film that would respect the first two films and would stand out from the other two sequels. Having said that, how could there be a decent film with this cast? In the role of Sarah Connor was selected the overrated snot of Games of Thrones, Emilia Clarke, and Jason Clarke who interpreted John Connor, wasn’t the best choice. Is it possible to propose these specific actors for these amazing roles? They seemed like poor choices for this film and they did not fit at all in the history of the "Terminator". "Terminator: Genisys" was definitely not a very bad film but I think that it had nothing to offer to the viewers, except for the action and visual effects. Maybe if it had a better cast, the result was not so modest but still could not touch the two original movies with this script. It became clear that the new movie was released in order to make money for the studio. We all know that the inspiration has gone and the producers do not readily take risks in original stories. Though, I will say it again one more time: After the audience prefers to see the same heroes/characters every time, why would the producers stop funding the same script ideas? It's a vicious circle. However, the total receipts of the "Terminator: Genisys" was not very satisfactory in Box Office but it had much better total earnings worldwide ($89.760.000-$350.400.000). I’m convinced that the American audience made a step forward this time, saying "Hasta nunca" (instead Hasta la vista) in the next Terminator. But you never know..

Drama & Social Films
"The Railway Man" is a British-Australian production that was released in my country in July of last year. However, a neighborhood open air cinema chose it during last July and we seized the opportunity to watch it on the big screen. "The Railway Man" made its official premiere at the Toronto Film Festival two years ago and it is based on the homonymous autobiographical book by Eric Lomax, which became a best seller in 1995! "The Railway Man" takes place during the World War II. The central character of the story is Eric Lomax, a British officer, who was taken prisoner along with thousands of other compatriots and Australian soldiers in the Malaysian jungle. They were transported to a Japanese concentration camp and forced to build a railway line that connected Thailand with Burma under very poor conditions. Unfortunately, Eric Lomax is brutally tortured by the Japanese, who were brutally famous for their sadistic techniques. It is not a coincidence that they collaborated with the Nazis in the World War II in order to subjugate the entire planet. They had common minds. However, Eric Lomax managed to survive, but he carried traumatic stress his entire life. His acquaintance with Patti Wallace, was decisive, since she was the only one who helped him to overcome the bad memories that haunted him for so long. "The Railway Man" is essentially a story of reconciliation, which could also be a big example to many people who have been subjected to torture in times of war and other bad situations. However, I would say that I'm not a fan of this particular mindset as I have always been fascinated by stories based on revenge (Kill Bill, The Brave One etc) or vindication (The Hurricane, Woman in Gold etc). Despite this, I cannot say that I did not like what I saw. "The Railway Man" is a pretty good production that fully respects the story of Eric Lomax and it’s quite enlightening with its content. It didn’t intend to shock viewers for impression as Angelina Jolie did in her own film “Unbroken”, but mostly it wants to feature the shocking story of a silent hero of World War II. Director of the movie is the Australian Jonathan Teplitzky, who does not have a particular filmography under his belt but did famously in "The Railway Man". The interpretations of the main actors were very good (Colin Firth, Jeremy Irvine and Nicole Kidman) and they played a significant role to the overall effect of the film. "The Railway Man" had also beautiful photography, great cinematography and remarkable soundtrack. Nevertheless, I cannot forget that its development was moving very slowly and there were some emotional clichés certainly in the ending. "The Railway Man" is a pretty good movie without really making itself stand out from other films of its kind. We have seen similar stories in the past and I wonder how many others we will see in the near future. If any survivor from World War II wrote a book about his experiences, I guess that there would be at least one film studio which would make a film about it. However, this does not offer anything innovative in cinema and pushes viewers to alternative forms of entertainment. Having said that, "The Railway Man did not fare badly, since it managed to earn $22,000,000 mainly due to the expected success in Australia and UK. In other countries, however, it didn’t have huge box office numbers though. I will recommend it mainly to fans of true stories that combine military events. bbS_dYEwf2M

The X Factor ● Series 12 ● Live Show 2
I was very disappointed with the results yesterday. Sean Miley Moore had the best performance on Saturday. His rendition of "California Dreaming" was totally perfect. What happened to British public? I thought that they had good taste. Kiera was one of my favourites before the live performances but I changed a little bit my mind in the last two weeks. It seems that Monica has a lot of haters here. However, I really like her (voice+style+boobs) and I think that she will improve in the future. She is also Greek!! Ela mori patrida!!

Non-Stop
"Non-Stop" is a claustrophobic adventure that unfolds in a Boeing 767. It was released in late February of last year but I had the chance to see it at the beginning of July after a neighborhood open air cinema chose to screen it at a reduced price. The truth is that I was not crazy about watching this movie, although it had been advertised a lot when it was initially released in my country. However, Liam Neeson is considered a guarantee in action movies and it is no coincidence that I have watched the majority of his movies at the cinema in the last six years such as The Other Man, Taken, Chloe, Clash of the Titans, The A-Team, The Next Three Days, Unknown, Grey, Wrath of the Titans, Battleship, Taken 2 and A Million Ways to Die in the West. The central character of the story is Bill Marks, an alcoholic, psychological, unstable air marshal, who is receiving threatening messages on his cell phone during a transatlantic flight. The unknown sender of these messages requires from the airline to pay $150 million to the account of Bill Marks, but if they do not, a passenger will die every 20 minutes. This will be something new for Bill Marks, since he starts to think that this is a hoax. However, things will become increasingly pressing with the passage of time and Bill Marks will be the one who will try to maintain security and calm in the plane. "Non- Stop" does not differ much from similar movies of its kind but I can say that the beginning is very good! It has pretty good directing, elaborate montage, plenty of suspense, scalable development and good performances from the main actors, Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore. You couldn’t be sure which of the passengers was behind the threatening messages and you changed your mind a lot during the plot. John W. Richardson, Chris Roach and Ryan Engle wrote a tight script while the Spanish Jaume Collet-Serra successfully adapted it to the cinema screen. Having seen previous works of the latter like House of Wax, Orphan and Unknown, I can say that he is very good at creating an atmosphere of mystery in his films. Something that he repeated in "Non-Stop". However, all these good intentions vanished in the last half hour of the film, since we saw one extravagance after another while the finale was more tragic than my country’s economy. It was the ultimate “cinematic uncool”! The producers had a very interesting story on their hands that could make the difference under the supervision and direction of Jaume Collet-Serra but it seems that they preferred to change it into a brainless Hollywood action movie. Let alone, the bad intentions of the sender were mildly unacceptable and should not have a reason to exist. The large film studios should be more careful about the scenarios which they approve every time, because there are dangerous people like Andreas Lubitz that can be identified with the evil characters they watch on the big screen and pushed them somehow to their sketchy acts! Only if you see this movie, you'll understand. "Non-Stop" definitely belongs to those films that have a frustrating and miserable ending. Also, it’s one of the movies that its performance hits rock bottom in the last thirty minutes. In contrast to, of course, the first hour of its plot, which holds the interest of the viewer, makes you to think that you will see the top psychological thriller of the year. Despite this, its total revenues were very good worldwide ($50,000,000 cost-received $222.8 million) and it was received a relatively good average score in IMDb (7,0). I see that those who went to see it, they are fans of action movies or they are fans of Liam Neeson, but in no case "Non-Stop" deserves a score like this. I couldn’t help but wonder if the producers make money from these stories and viewers like watching them at the cinema. So I have to ask myself why not stop investing in them? They have a large fanbase although their content is not the best. Moreover, qualitative movies are sitting heavy on the stomachs of most viewers and it’s difficult for them to use their brain.

Spy
"Spy" is an action comedy film that has nothing to envy from other films of its kind. It was released in my country’s cinemas over four months ago and there were many who believed that this was the comedy of summer! I watched it in a nice open air cinema and I had seen the official trailer several times in recent months in the multiplex! Despite this, every time I saw it, it made me laugh when I would watch it on the big screen. The main heroine of the film is the low-profile Susan Cooper, who performs various tasks in the offices of the CIA, as well she instructs through her computer the Agent Bradley Fine on his various secret missions. However, when he is murdered by the ruthless Bulgarian arms dealer, Rayna Boyanov, Susan Cooper will be the one who will continue the mission so to deter an upcoming global disaster. Although "Spy" has similar scenario with the films of legendary agent James Bond, it is obvious that they differ in content. "Spy" had ample doses of humor and hilarious gags that created a very pleasant atmosphere in the movie theater. The protagonist of the film, Melissa McCarthy, was the perfect choice for the role and I think that this particular character was tailor-made for her. It is undoubtedly one of the best comedians of her generation. The directing of the film was quite good and Paul Feig was not limited to the visual part, since he wrote the script and participated in the production too. Although I have not seen his previous successful movies such as The Heat and The Bridesmaids, I can understand that this is a man with an increased sense of humor. "Spy" had clever dialogues, unique quotes and imaginative characters! Apart from the excellent Melissa McCarthy and the other interpretations made us laugh with the help of Miranda Hart, Rose Byrne and Jason Statham. The latter essentially reiterates once again the role that made him widely known, but in this film he is incredibly tied to the opposite character of Melissa McCarthy. "Spy" also had several action scenes, rapid progression and beautiful exterior shots. "Spy" is arguably one of the funniest stories I have seen in the cinema this year! It combined comedy and adventure in a very successful way and there is no way that viewers won’t like it. Besides, you can understand it based on its funny official trailer. It had a successful performance at the box office and its total worldwide revenues are more than $236,000,000! In addition, it received positive reviews from critics worldwide and has been loved by the audience after having gathered a good average score in IMDb (7,2). So, a sequel is expected of this film. I hope, however, the producers will maintain the same good effect as they did in the first film. In my opinion it was the best film to get away from the tension of those days since we had capital controls and elections.
