  3. "I doubt you can have the kind of indoctrination schools in America as you do in the UK," he said. "Besides, there's a large body of American Muslims in the US – the Nation of Islam – which has created a kind of mainstream Muslim institution. The Muslims there are open Muslims, whereas in Europe they tend to go into ghetto schools. "The Nation of Islam provides an antidote in the United States to fundamentalist Islam – which is why individuals from America have to go abroad to find radical teachings." And , speaking about the fatwa issued by Khomeini against Rushdie, he said: "It all began when he assumed the power of life and death over the life of a writer. This was a watershed bet...

I suppose it is a sad thing to see, just how disillusioned a people can become. Living in the United States now, I returned recently to set my daughter up in my old college in order to give her a taste of the university life I had experienced over thirty years ago. I was astonished, though not surprised since my siblings had kept me informed closely as to the true nature of the changes occurring in 'Perfidious Albion' through the years, at how little of the indomitable spirit of the British seemed to be on display. I arrived during the recent huge snowstorm. Fear was the watchword. Everyone should pray that government would save him from himself. All over, I saw signs of 'control' - the speed cameras are the best example. It is a process of infantilism, the result of which is that a people become wards of their masters. To some extent, the European Union has encouraged this process (one needs to read George Orwell closely on this point). Even back in 1973, I had said it was a mistake to join what was then the EEC. I remember the three-day week but nowhere did we see the despair that I witnessed this time round - in fact, it was more like anger rising that culminated, with the disastrous Callaghan government, in a real change. How funny it is that History teaches that we learn nothing from History - At the Cenotaph, by Siegfried Sassoon.

Years ago, my very wise sociology professor said that there is great danger in creating laws like this, because if you make enough esoteric things illegal, it makes everyone a criminal and it gives the government the right to arrest you whenever they see fit. That was 20 years ago and it made some sense, but it seems to be happening more and more these days. I agree that tobacco is harmful and that people should use their judgment when smoking around others, but making smoking in a car illegal is going too far. Personally, I gave up smoking a few months ago using electronic cigarettes that look and feel like real cigarettes and deliver nicotine through use of water vapor. They seem healthier and don’t smell at all. I use them in my car, but still refrain from using them with the kids around because I don’t want them getting hooked on nicotine in the way I did. I wonder if I got pulled over using one of these what the ruling would be?? (I’m sure there would be a law against it shortly afterward!)
