'Elvis Is Back' (Legacy Edition) Enters Billboard Chart
'Elvis Is Back' (Legacy Edition) enters the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart at No.199 for week ending 26th March. I thought it would have done much better considering it has been in and around the Amazon Top 100 Albums mark for several weeks. Hopefully, it will improve next week. Brian

New Elvis Movie Confirmed
It has been confirmed in today's Financial Times that Simon Fuller of XIX Entertainment is financing a movie based on Elvis' rise to fame to be made by Sony Pictures Entertainment. I suspect this will be based on Peter Guralnick's 'Last Train To Memphis'. Will be interesting to see how this one pans out. The main problem is getting someone to portray Elvis. Further, will it be a TV only production or one for the regular film circuit? Brian :D

Budapest To Name Landmark After Elvis
Budapest to name landmark after Elvis, declare him honorary citizen of the Hungarian capital By Associated Press 7:21 a.m. EST, March 2, 2011 BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Budapest's mayor says Elvis Presley will be declared a posthumous honorary citizen of Hungary's capital and a city landmark will be named after him. Mayor Istvan Tarlos said Wednesday that Elvis will be commemorated because of his support for Hungary in the wake of the short-lived, anti-Soviet revolution of October 1956. On the city's website, visitors can pick one of 12 locations to be renamed after Elvis, including street crossings, a small square and a site at the foot of Margaret Bridge, which spans the Danube River. Voting closes March 15. On Jan. 6, 1957, during his last appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show," Elvis sang a gospel standard, "Peace in Valley," which Sullivan said reflected the singer's preoccupation with Hungarians' plight after the uprising. Elvis' Police Badges - Sale/Transfer Illegal?
Police Chief Shares Department Tales Mark Erickson divulges how a Morton Grove Police badge ended up in the hands of Elvis Presley. A Morton Grove Police badge from the estate of Elvis Presley recently turned up on eBay. The king of rock and roll often made friends with police officers while touring the country. When making stops in various cities he would befriend local officers and for whatever reason, Presley began collecting police badges. Many of the badges he acquired throughout the years are on display at Graceland, the late entertainer’s home, which is now a museum. When Police Chief Mark Erickson learned about the badge on eBay he picked up the phone and called the officer who used to wear the now famous badge. "Am I in trouble?" The now retiree asked. Of course he wasn't but since the badge had been gifted to Presley more than 35 years ago, federal laws have since changed. And, these new laws prohibit the transfer or sale of genuine police badges. That's just one of the many stories Erickson divulged to a crowd of listeners at a recent library event. The informal conversation at the library was a way for residents see to a different side of the police department. Erickson joined the Morton Grove Police Department 28 years ago as a patrolman. During his career he worked in crime prevention and as a D.A.R.E. officer., and later appointed to police chief in 2009. Today, Erickson oversees a department consisting of 45 sworn officers and 25 civilians. A completely different department than the one established in 1989 that consisted of one marshall and just four officers. Throughout his time at the department, Erickson called Oct. 9, 1989, "the saddest day in the history of the Morton Grove Police Department." It was on that early October day that Barry Shalin, a 19-year veteran of the force, was struck and killed by a drunk driver while making a routine traffic stop. During those dark hours, Erickson credits Police Chief Larry Schey for "keeping the department together during the most difficult time." Residents and officers kept Shalin's memory alive by dedicating the park next to the police station in his name. To commemorate the twentieth anniversary of Shalin’s death, a bench and star were installed in front of the police department in 2009. "The men walk by the memorial every day and it reminds them of the dangers they face," Erickson said. Brian

'Elvis, That's The Way It Is' - Live In Memphis
The highlight of Elvis Week 2011 is "Elvis Presley LIVE - The King in Concert" at 8:00 p.m. at The Orpheum, 203 South Main Street, Memphis. "Elvis Presley Live: The King in Concert" is a multi-media music event that puts a hot studio session band and back up vocalists on stage in Memphis as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll is projected, larger than life, on state-of-the-art LED screens. Hosted by Joe Guercio, Elvis' musical conductor and close friend for many years, this is a rare opportunity to experience an Elvis concert in Memphis, the city known around the world as the Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll. This is a virtual Elvis Presley concert - with Elvis singing lead vocals - presented exactly like one of his classic live performances at the Las Vegas Hilton showroom. All the sound, other than Elvis' signature vocals, have been pulled out of his best concert performances in the epic film "Elvis: That's the Way It Is.” All musical accompaniments in this concert are performed live except for Elvis' voice. The contemporary staging and overall production help create the illusion that Elvis is on stage. Also making a special appearance during this evening will be Elvis’ Imperials, singing a few of Elvis' favorite gospel numbers. Saturday, August 13th is truly a night with the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll that you’ll want to experience in Memphis with your friends, family and fans from around the world during Elvis Week 2011. Tickets to the event are $89.00 and $45.00. The $89.00 VIP ticket includes VIP seating plus access to an Elvis Presley LIVE Post-Party and collectible event lanyard/badge. Tickets for this event will be available through Ticketmaster after the on-sale dates listed above. Please note: If you purchase the $89.00 VIP ticket for this event, you MUST show your ticket at the door of the Elvis Presley Post-Party for access to the event and your collectible event badge/lanyard. The post-party will be from 11:00 p.m. – 1:00 a.m. Location for post-party to be announced soon. It will be interesting to see how this differs from 'Elvis In Concert', apart from a new back-up band/singers etc. and all songs being from TTWII. Brian

Putting 'Glee' Into Perspective
From This Week's 'Billboard' Magazine: While "Glee" passes the King this week for most Hot 100 appearances, it's certainly not too early to consider how much more history the cast can write. It does seem like a safe bet that the "Glee" cast will hold the record for most Hot 100 hits for a very long time. But, to quote the artist whose music infused Tuesday's (Feb. 15) episode, never say never. It's hard to imagine another type of act that could boast the cache/marketing push/multi-media platform to release multiple songs week after week and enjoy enough consumer support to send them onto the Hot 100. By the end of the second season of "Glee" this spring, if the cast continues to place tracks on the Hot 100 at its current pace, it would add another approximately 40 titles to its total, bringing it to about 150 overall. With the series renewed for a third season, 22 episodes x five Hot 100 hits a week = another potential 100 or so chart entries. Thus, by spring 2012, the "Glee" cast, if it maintains its release schedule and popularity, could count approximately 250 Hot 100 chart hits. Beyond that, who knows how long the show will remain a Fox juggernaut? With Presley at 108 and no other artist in triple digits, no artist we now know of seems in the running to top the troupe's Hot 100 record. Of course, at this time in 2009, "Glee" had yet to debut on TV. While the series was set up to be a ratings success, having premiered after "American Idol," who could've predicted that in less than two years the cast would have passed Presley for such a prestigious honor? Thus, if "Glee" can overthrow the King so suddenly, perhaps another TV show can do the same to "Glee" in the future. And, just as the digital era has revolutionized the way consumers can purchase music so instantaneously, we don't know what future means of music delivery could affect chart performance many years from now. It's also worth placing the cast's latest achievement in a broader historical chart context. While the ensemble's feat is unquestionably impressive, a few facts in Presley's favor: The King's career predates the Hot 100's Aug. 4, 1958, launch. Joel Whitburn's "Top Pop Singles" book counts 31 Presley songs that reached various Hot 100 predecessor charts beginning in 1956. So, in terms of overall Billboard chart hits, Presley's total could stand at an unofficial 139 when combining multiple song surveys. Further breaking down the "Glee" cast's Hot 100 resume, of its 113 Hot 100 entries, just two have hit the top 10: "Don't Stop Believin' " (No.4) and "Teenage Dream" (8). (36 of the 113 have reached the top 40). Conversely, with 80 top 40 Hot 100 hits - 25 of which reached the top 10 - Presley is far and away the leader. Elton John ranks second with 57 top 40 titles, followed by the Beatles (50). 36 top 40 entries places the "Glee" cast in a tie with R. Kelly for 15th place. Also, Presley's 108 Hot 100 entries translate to 994 cumulative weeks spent on the chart, second-most all-time after John's 1,021. As just 23 of the "Glee" cast's 113 Hot 100 songs have logged more than one week on the list, the troupe's total weeks count is 150. And, of course, Presley introduced a bounty of classics to mainstream audiences, while the "Glee" cast has so far charted solely remakes (a streak that could end in upcoming weeks with the show's rumored promise of original songs). Ultimately, the "Glee" cast's passing of Presley in one of the Hot 100 100's most sacred categories is laudable. It's only one statistic, however, when examining the artists who have made some of the most memorable impacts in Hot 100 history. Further, as onother fan points out on the http://www.elviscommunity.com forum: "Few inventions have had as much effect on contemporary American society as television. Before 1947 the number of U.S. homes with television sets could be measured in the thousands. By the late 1990s, 98 percent of U.S. homes had at least one television set, and those sets were on for an average of more than seven hours a day. The typical American spends (depending on the survey and the time of year) from two-and-a-half to almost five hours a day watching television. It is significant not only that this time is being spent with television but that it is not being spent engaging in other activities, such as reading or going out or socializing......... United states Population in 1955: 165,931,202 According to the U.S. Bureau of the Census, the resident population of the United States, projected to 02/19/11 at 18:40 UTC (EST+5) is: 310,850,439 The WORLD population by date is as follows: 1955 2.8 billion 1960 3 billion 1965 3.3 billion 1970 3.7 billion 1975 4 billion 1980 4.5 billion 1985 4.85 billion 1990 5.3 billion 1995 5.7 billion 1999 6 billion 2006 6.5 billion 2009 6.8 billion 2012 7 billion There is no comparison....Elvis is The King for a reason...." Finally, Marty Lacker has commented on this story at www.elvis-express.com as follows: "The comparison of Glee and Elvis on Billboard's Hot 100 is ridiculous and it is like comparing apples to oranges. Elvis is a recording artist,Glee is a TV Show. Technology back then is nothing what it is today where not only can they download the music from the internet, many kids do it directly to their cell phones. They also don't mention the fact of Elvis' number one records and many of them in the early years were at #1 across the board, pop, Black Music and Country charts. Not to mention that Elvis changed the culture of the world in the 50's as well as being a cultural historical icon. In another few years,if not sooner, Glee will be forgotten as just another TV show that faded out and was cancelled. All this hoopla was to get publicity for Billboard and Glee." Brian

'Elvis In Concert' - Mohegan Sun Arena Ct.
According to one fan who attended the Mohegan Sun Concert (12th) there wasn't a jumpsuited Elvis fan in sight. Apparently, the Arena was about half full although other reports indicate a sell-out. No new content. Google Earth Intro not used. I suspect, however, that the Google aspect will be included in the European concerts for 2012. As usual the music could have been louder. Still a good show though. Line-Up: James Burton - Lead Guitar Glen Hardin - Piano Paul Leim - Drums Nathan East - Bass Sweet Inspirations -Estelle Brown, Portia Griffin, Unknown Female Terry Blackwood, Joe Moscheo Joe Guercio - Musical Director 16 Piece Orchestra Estelle gave a brief tribute to Myrna saying that The Sweets will continue until "God tells us when to stop". 'An Afternoon In The Garden' Returns To the Billboard Charts
The album 'An Afternoon In The Garden' has suddenly turned up on the Billboard Top 200 and Catalog Charts. Last week it entered the Top 200 Album Charts at 166 and 20 on the Catalog Charts. This week it has risen to 137 on the Top 200 Album Charts and 16 on the Catalog Album Charts. I suspect this could be due to the 'Elvis In Concert' productions happening during the next week or so at the Radio City Music Hall in NYC and at the Mohegan Sun Arena in CT. I am reliably informed that the album is on sale for $5, along with others, at such stores as Walmart. This is my favourite 'live' Elvis album. Brian

Interesting Snippet From 'Commercial Appeal' Newspaper
50 years ago: 1961 Four hours after the box office sale of tickets for the Elvis Presley charity show started yesterday, a "sold out" sign went up at the Central Ticket office in Goldsmith's. However, 668 seats are still available in the gallery of the Amphitheater of Ellis Auditorium and they will be offered on a "first come, first served" basis at 9:30 this morning at the ticket office. Gallery seats are $2 each. A section has been reserved for Negroes. "Memphis has never seen anything like this in the entertainment business," a veteran showman said last night. Just goes to show what a difference 50 years makes. Brian
