Elvis Rules UK Single Sales
During March, 2007, music TV Channel VH1, in collaboration with the Official UK Charts Company, unveiled the 50 best selling male acts in chart history on their show 'The Nation's Favourite #1 Men'. Those eligible had to be male (solo or group) with more than one #1 single to their credit. Only single sales for artists #1 records were eligible. The King reigns, outselling all other artists to claim the coveted title of the UK's favourite having accumulated 21 #1's and selling 10,311,196 singles. Even if women were eligible then the top 3 would have remained the same. Further, whilst some of these positions may have changed, again the top 3 have not. Here is the full top 10. 1 Elvis Presley 2 The Beatles 3 Cliff Richard 4 Westlife 5 Shadows 6 Take That 7 Rolling Stones 8 Oasis 9 Elton John 10 Michael Jackson Brian

Media Claims Rihanna Equals Elvis UK Chart Record
Worldwide Media reports that Rihanna has tied a chart record set by Elvis after hitting the top of the pop charts in Britain again. With her hit, "What's My Name," it states Rihanna has become the first female solo artist in UK history to achieve five number one singles for five years in a row and ties with Elvis. She may have been the first female solo act to have No.1's in 5 consecutive years but has NOT equalled Elvis' record. Elvis had fourteen No.1's in 7 consecutive years (not 5 as claimed for Rihanna) as follows: 1. All Shook Up (1957) 2. Jailhouse Rock (1958) 3. One Night/I Got Stung (1959) 4. A Fool Such As I/I Need Your Love Tonight (1959) 5. It's Now Or Never (1960) 6. Are You Lonesome Tonight (1961) 7. Wooden Heart (1961) 8. Surrender (1961) 9. His Latest Flame/Little Sister (1961) 10. Rock A Hula Baby/Can't Help falling In Love (1962) 11. Good Luck Charm (1962) 12. She's Not You (1962) 13. Return To Sender (1962) 14. Devil In Disguise (1963). Just shows how the media are trying to boost other artist's careers at the expense of giving out false information. Brian

HMV plans to close 60 stores
12:48 | Wednesday January 5, 2011 HMV announced today that it will close 60 of its shops in the UK over the next 12 months for various reasons. In connection with this the following article appears relevant: "The cost of illegal downloading to the industry is again underlined by new OCC figures that show the physical and digital album market slumped 7% in volume last year. Despite a big uptake in digital albums – they represented almost one fifth of the album sector in 2010 – the market for CD albums dropped 12.4% to 98.5m and dragged the whole sector from 128.9m in 2009 to 119.9m in 2010. BPI chief executive Geoff Taylor believes the market has now turned a corner, with 2010 going down as the year that digital albums finally went mainstream selling some 21.0m. But, Taylor also pounces on the data as further evidence of the damage illegal filesharers are doing. Taylor says, “Despite unprecedented demand for music, and strong innovation offering consumers new ways to access music online, legal downloads are unable to offset the decline in CD sales because they are dwarfed by illegal competition.” His words were echoed by BPI chairman Tony Wadsworth, who says it is now crucial that action to stem illegal downloading is taken. However, the pair have much more to cheer about in the singles sector: digital downloads have powered singles to their third successive record high with 161.8m sold in 2010, compared to 152.7m the previous year – a 5.9% jump. 5.2m of these tracks came in the final week of last year, which is another record because that is the first time weekly sales have surpassed the 5m mark. Taylor adds, “2010 showed that the digital singles highs seen in the previous two years were no fluke – music fans continue to embrace the convenience, value and choice offered by legal download stores.” Brian :(

Interesting Bits Of Trivia From 1956
By Keith Terry of the KearneyHub Newspaper - Nebraska dated 22nd December, 2010. The Elvis Presley contagion infected America in the mid-1950s, and Kearney contracted the fever. By late 1956, Elvis had recorded and released several tunes — including “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Blue Suede Shoes” and “Hound Dog” — that established him as The King among his devotees. At The World Theatre that year, a film starring Bill Haley & The Comets showed Nov. 17, and although not in it, Presley got top billing. For half an hour leading up to the flick, his music was played on the movie-house sound system and 20 of his records were given away. Two weeks later, he debuted there in “Love Me Tender,” 250 autographed photos of him were distributed, and an 8-foot-tall photo of the man was purchased by seven young women in an auction. On Dec. 14, The King’s music again preceded someone else’s film, his records were handed out and there was an Elvis impersonation contest on stage. They were even impersonating him in 1956!!! When Eric Clapton Met Elvis
“Who the Hell’s limousine is that?” On a late July evening in 1974, that was Elvis Presley’s reaction to the sight of a long, black limo parked in front of the General Cinema in Memphis--one of Elvis’s favorite spots for personal midnight movie screenings. The limo happened to belong to another superstar rocker who had made a special pilgrimage to meet Elvis. It was up to Jerry Schilling, one of Elvis’s Memphis Mafia entourage, to remind the King that he had consented to such a visit. “I think it’s probably Eric’s, E,” said Schilling. “Who’s Eric?” Presley asked. “Eric Clapton. You said he could come by to say hello, remember?” “Well, fine. We just don’t need a damned limousine parked in front of the theater.” Elvis didn’t normally have anything against limousines, and usually didn’t mind being the center of attention when out in public, but the movie theater was one place where he preferred to keep things low-key and extremely private. Guests had to be invited or cleared by Elvis himself, and were expected to follow a fairly rigid protocol inside the theater. You didn’t sit anywhere in the 12th row center area--that was for Elvis and those he chose to sit near him. And, once a movie started, you shut up--Elvis was a film buff who really did want to see everything he screened over there. On that particular night, Elvis looked more like a rancher than a rock star. After a spring of heavy touring, Elvis was back in Memphis for a while, and was taking the time to enjoy some down home pleasures. That day, he had driven south to some Mississippi horse farms with Schilling and Myrna Smith, a member of Elvis’s vocal backing group the Sweet Inspirations and Schilling’s longtime girlfriend. The three came back straight to the theater without a stop at Graceland, and Elvis, at the wheel of his favorite pickup truck, was in leather boots, cowboy hat, and his somewhat upscale version of Western wear. “I remember being really worried that the sight of the limousine might darken Elvis’s mood and ruin the meeting with Eric,” says Schilling. “Elvis wasn’t seeing a lot of people up at Graceland at that time, and it was kind of a big deal when he agreed to be introduced to somebody new. We wanted everything to go just right.” The chance for a great summit meeting seemed to diminish when Elvis walked into the theater and saw that Clapton and his companion, Pattie Harrison (George’s ex) were sitting about 12th row center--right in Elvis’s seats. “That was like rubbing salt in an open cut,” laughs Schilling. “I didn’t know what was going to happen.” Schilling had been instrumental in setting up the meeting. Clapton was on tour, and enjoying a new resurgence in popularity with the chart-topping success of his cover of Bob Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff.” He had a concert scheduled at Memphis’s Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, but had a rare night off and wanted to do anything he could to meet Elvis. Weeks before Clapton’s arrival in town, Schilling had been contacted by Richard Cole, a tour manager who’d become a near legendary figure for the wild adventures he’d been at the center of while on the road with Led Zeppelin. Cole had made Schilling a VIP guest at some Zeppelin shows, and was hoping Schilling could return the favor by arranging for an Elvis and Clapton face-to-face. Elvis had been open, if not particularly enthusiastic about the meeting. But now, between the showy limo and the seating faux pas, Schilling wondered if things were about to get ugly. “Eric got up and came over to us and I made the introductions,” recalls Schilling. “And right away he was just such the perfect British gentleman, making it really clear how much respect he had for Elvis. Hearing that, Elvis became a relaxed and charming host, and the two fell into a really nice, friendly conversation. We’d all gotten used to thinking of Elvis as a great talent, but I remember being struck that day again at how much he meant to other great musicians.” The idea had been for the two stars just to have a moment to meet, but they got along well enough that Elvis asked if Eric and Pattie would like to stay and watch that night’s movie. The couple gladly accepted the invitation (there’s no record of what got screened that particular night, but Schilling remembers that Jaws, Godfather II, and Monty Python and the Holy Grail were particular favorites of Presley’s that summer). As everybody took their seats, Elvis asked Schilling to come with him to the bathroom. “When we were alone in there,” says Schilling, “He turned to me and said, ‘You know Jerry, that Eric is all right.” The next day, Schilling and Myrna Smith rode to the Liberty Bowl concert with Clapton and Harrison, in the same limo that had made Schilling a nervous man the night before. Schilling and Smith were VIP guests at the concert (at which the opening band was Lynyrd Skynyrd) and then said their goodbyes to Clapton, Harrison and Cole after the show. Clapton and Elvis never crossed paths again, but Schilling saw the guitarist many years later at a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. “I went up to him and started to reintroduce myself,” Schilling recalls. “He stopped me and said, ‘I know you, Jerry. You introduced me to Elvis.’ I asked him if he’d like me to introduce him to Scotty Moore, who was being inducted that year. His eyes lit up and he said, ‘Where is he?’ So I got to make that introduction too.” Brian

Sony Show Their True Colours
I could not believe my ears last night whilst watching 'Coronation Street' (a UK Soap Opera with around 10 million viewers). During the interval an advertisement was shown for the latest Michael Jackson Album and in it he is shown with a crown on his head whilst it is announced 'The Greatest Artist Of All-Time'. I would not have minded this had his record label not been Sony, the same as Elvis'. However, this now places Elvis in a dilemma. No wonder his latest records are not selling so well - Jackson (in death) has stolen his thunder (with the compliance of Sony). If it's any consolation at all it is in the following statement just issued by 'Music Week': "After getting off to a slow start last week, Michael Jackson’s Epic- and posthumous-released Michael continues to under-perform: it is destined course to slip out of the albums top five this Sunday with sales plummeting by more than 50% week-on-week." Illegal Downloading In The UK
The following is published in the latest Edition of 'Music Week'. Brian :( BPI wakes up the nation 09:21 | Thursday December 16, 2010 By Robert Ashton The BPI has delivered a wake-up call to those who have lost sight of the UK’s illegal downloading problem with a new study that shows more than three quarters of all music tracks downloaded this year were done so illegally. The conclusions of Digital Music Nation 2010, which for the first time harnesses Data and trends from both the legal and illegal side of the street, will make sobering reading for politicians and the media. In the most comprehensive and sophisticated study of how people consume their music digitally the BPI estimates a total of 1.2bn illegal tracks will be downloaded by the end of this year; a figure which dwarfs the 370m tracks that will be purchased in 2010. “To find that 76% of downloads are illegal is shocking,” says BPI chief executive Geoff Taylor, who launched the report this morning. “Despite the progress of the legal market and the high awareness of legal services illegal downloading is not decreasing.” With these and other headline figures, which spell out the current digital landscape, Taylor wants to regain the agenda – currently dominated by the forthcoming judicial review of the DEA and problems over how the Act will work – and remind Government and others that the illegal market is still huge and holding back the development of the UK’s legitimate digital entertainment sector. “There has been a relentless focus on the details and implementation of the Digital Economy Act,” suggests Taylor. “I think some people have lost sight of the need for urgent action. Our job is to lift their eyes.” And the report doesn’t shy away from the hard truth. It shows: - 1.2bn tracks illegally downloaded in 2010 from unauthorised sources - The illegal proportion of all music tracks obtained in 2010 is 76% - The retail value of unathorised tracks is worth £984m - 28.8% of the UK online population are involved in illegal downloading - 23% of the UK online population used P2P sites and software to obtain unauthorized music - 7.7m UK internet users engaged in illegal downloading across all sources Taylor says he believes these and other statistics in the new report will remind policy makers why the DEA is right for the digital economy and could even help bring about implementation of the Act much quicker: frustratingly the code underlying how the Act should work is long overdue, bogged down with Ofcom and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. It is now not expected until January. When the DEA was passed earlier this year, it had initially been hoped that notification letters could be sent to illegal filesharers as early as January. But, now executives fear that if the timetable slips any further letters are unlikely to land on doormats before next winter. The BPI’s move comes just days after the shadow culture secretary Ivan Lewis suggested the Government creates a cross party forum to help grow the UK’s music and creative sectors.

Will We See Elvis In New Movie Role?
December 10th WILL WE SEE ELVIS IN NEW MOVIE ROLL? - The time could be approaching where we get to see Elvis starring in a movie alongside the likes of James Dean, John Wayne or Marilyn Monroe? George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, is reported to have already bought the film rights of deceased film legends such as Orson Welles, James Dean and Marilyn Monroe, with the aim of bringing them back to life on the big screen. Lucas has been buying up the film rights to dead actors in the hope of using computer trickery to put them all together, so you'd have Orson Welles and Barbara Stanwyck alongside today's stars,' he said. Whether or not EPE, Fox, Warner and whoever else will allow Elvis to be used for such an historic project remains to be seen, but I hope that they don't scupper any attempts and one day the film idea becomes a blockbuster reality.
