Alanis Morrisette is back!

The Canadian born pop/electro singer storms back into music with ‘Flavours of Entanglement’, her 7th studio album since ‘So-Called Chaos’. With her first single ‘Underneath’ making a big impression on music fans on both sides of the Atlantic, Miss Morrisette intends to leave her mark on the music industry by creating an album that combines dark and light, acoustic and electro leaving a memorable, lasting impression. With potentially huge hits such as ‘Torch’ and ‘Straitjacket’ this has to be Alanis’s best album to date.
‘Citizen of the Planet’ – A subtle, heavy sound with what feels like an African-styled beat. This song is quite surreal and the vocals are amazing, this track definitely shows the different styles Alanis can produce. Personally, I don’t think this is her best song on her album as the lyrics are quite difficult to understand and is a typical ‘Album Track’.
7/10
’Underneath’ – Her first single from ‘FOE’ and is quite catch, definitely a grower. The message she puts across is truly amazing. A catchy beat and some excellent vocals produced. The beat is similar to that of a heartbeat which is represented in the music video. This is a very good choice for first single and this would complement a follow-up second single such as ‘Not as We’ or ‘Versions of Violence’.
9/10
’Straitjacket’ – Clearly fairly obvious what the song is going to be about? The song is about someone being very frustrated by their partner and how all they want is for her to go away, get locked up, or in this case strapped in a straightjacket. The song is very pop-trance-electro-ish and I believe that this could be a real hit! The lyrics, the beat, and the melody, it’s all so amazing! This has to be a released single.
10/10
’Versions of Violence’ – It begins quite dark and quite heavy metal-ish, at first it made me think “Oh! This isn’t really a song I want to listen to”. Suddenly, the song reaches its chorus and I am completely blown away! I understand how the dark, bizarre beat coincides with the melody of the song. The track is very powerful, definitely similar to that of a rock ballad. I believe this should really be the second single as listeners could truly understand what she is capable of producing.
9/10
’Not as We’ – Hmm…this song required another listen as because it followed ‘VOV’ I was quite confused. After a second listen, I was shocked. Simply, shocked. The vocals are truly amazing, the voice of an angel as it reaches the chorus. The lyrics are fantastic and the simplicity of just a piano as the only instrument involved works perfectly. It is just Alanis and the piano, creating an unbelievable sound.
10/10
’In Praise of the Vulnerable Man’ – Definitely not as title you have ever seen anywhere else but that’s what I like about Alanis Morrisette, she creates the most unique tracks and the most unique sound, it is what first drew me to this song. I had mixed feelings about this song, I didn’t fully understand all the lyrics and it just wasn’t standing out for me. On the other hand the vocals are mind-blowing, (Yes! I know I’ve mentioned them what a million times before? But I just love them, they are superb!) Although the track isn’t the best, Alanis makes up for it, big style.
7/10
’Moratorium’ – The longest track on the album, exceeding five and a half minutes. I love this song; I really do, although I don’t think it is a track that should be released. I love the chorus but I just don’t think the track in general is substantial enough to suit the music market and Alanis’s fans. The track contains ‘Flavours of Entanglement’, which is where she got the title for her album. The sound is definitely something else; the fast beating of a snare combined with a bass drum every 8th beat creates a memorable melody.
8/10
’Torch’ – I can’t express how much I love this song. The simple sound of a guitar and piano fusing with the vocal talent of a truly phenomenal artist, this song has to definitely be the best on the album. The gradual change in pitch as the song approaches its chorus forms a beautiful melody. I won’t write much about this track, I merely advise you to purchase her album for the sheer greatness of this song. The only negative thing about this track is that it is 4:50 minutes long, too long to be released I think, I truly hope she creates a radio edit version, because this track is immense and needs to be released.
10/10
’Giggling Again For No Reason’ – Again a particularly unusual track title, but all the same, unique. The track is very up-beat and her vocals are quite whispy, in a good way. The synthesiser underscoring the songs beat enhances the song even more. Undoubtedly, the track is amazing although I don’t believe that it is a track that should be released. I think it should remain as one of those hidden treasures that should stay secret on the album.
9/10
’Tapes’ – Somehow I believe that this track is quite similar to ‘Underneath’ not necessarily the lyrics but the way the slow, deep verse beats are given a sudden transition to the chorus with heavy, hard-hitting beats. Her vocals sort of sound like she’s singing through her nose in some places. Nevertheless an appealing track, but definitely not my favourite.
7/10
’Incomplete’ – This track begins like a song from the soundtrack of ‘Juno’ the way it so positive and up-beat. But the lyrics don’t reflect the beat and melody of the song. The lyrics are quite sad with lines such as “One day I’ll be secure” and “And I have been missing this rapture the whole time”. I think that the beat opposes the lyrics so well that it works. It would be nice to see if people who reviewed this song wouldn’t say “The song is so happy, it has a nice beat and is really upbeat!” as it would just say that they haven’t fully listened or understood the song properly.
9/10
The album itself is a truly fantastic mix of melodies, beats and lyrics. The songs complement each other so well that the album itself should be a true hit! The thing I am most upset about is that Alanis Morissette is in fact an under-rated artist, and people really need to listen to her songs and her albums, they can then fully understand the true talent that she has. She wouldn’t have a record deal is she wasn’t good! The fact that she is different and produces a different sound than some of the c**p tack that is manufactured these days, is the reason she isn’t given a chance. I hope my review just helps you get an understanding of her talent, and how superb the album is. Please just buy the album; it will be worth every penny you spend as my review is nothing in comparison to the hard work and dedication that has gone to produce such a fantastic album!
