Does anyone know the percentage rise/fall of single and albums in all of the major music markets for last year? E.g U.K, U.S.A, Japan, France, Germany etc. I am just curious to see the pattern ie if albums have fallen in all major markets with singles rising modestly and so on. Hope that all makes sense!

BBC News Shares in music and books retailer HMV Group have fallen 24% after revealing falling sales, weak profits and trouble meeting the terms of a bank loan. The firm plans to close 60 stores - which include Waterstone's bookshops - in the next 12 months in order to get costs under control. It said Christmas sales were down 10%, and warned profits would be at the lower end of forecasts. Business was hit by the severe weather and "challenging trading conditions". Sales for the crucial five weeks to 1 January were down 10% on last year, due to a 13% slump at its HMV music stores. Entertainment market HMV also said it was struggling to avoid breaching the terms of a loan. "The board now expects that compliance with the April covenant test under the group's bank facility will be tight and is taking further mitigating actions during the next four months to address this," the company said in its trading statement, which was issued a week earlier than planned. As well as the store closures, HMV said it would implement other cost-cutting measures that would save it a further £10m per year. It said profits for the year to April would be at the bottom end of the £46m-60m range expected by markets. Although the company partly blamed the snow for the poor result, it conceded that underlying demand for its CDs, DVDs and games was weaker than hoped, and also pointed to "well-reported consumer headwinds as we enter 2011". "The pace of change in the markets in which we operate underlines the urgency with which we must continue to transform this business," said the firm's chief executive Simon Fox. Meanwhile, sales at its Waterstone's bookstores appeared to have stabilised, and were unchanged during the Christmas period compared with a year ago. The company attributed this "pleasing" result to turnaround actions implemented last year. Games Workshop Separately, fellow retailer Games Workshop said that it was also facing tough trading conditions in the entertainment market. Sales of its fantasy figurines and other products fell 4% in the six months to 28 November compared with a year earlier. The company further warned that "difficult trading conditions since that time mean that this shortfall is unlikely to be recovered by the year end". As a result, the firm feared that profits for the year to May were unlikely to meet market expectations. Shares in Games Workshop fell 10% at the start of trading in London.

Take That scored the biggest-selling album of 2010 in the UK, beating Michael Buble into second place, the Official Charts Company has revealed. The reformed pop band's first album with Robbie Williams for 15 years, Progress, sold 1.84 million copies. Buble's Crazy Love sold 1.23 million, while Lady GaGa's The Fame was third with 1.05 million sales. Meanwhile, Eminem and Rihanna had the year's best-selling single with their duet Love The Way You Lie. That song sold 854,000 copies, narrowly beating X Factor winner Matt Cardle's debut single When We Collide, with sales of 815,000. Bruno Mars was in third place with Just The Way You Are (Amazing), which sold 766,000 copies. Well that's really because her songs since 2001 have not sold well on the whole so beating them was not very high. An for her album not even over 600k world wide really is poor. That is not just to say Kylie has underperformed I think in general established acts are struggling against the like if Lady gage etc, eg Westlife, Mariah Carey and so on.

Well it was when I became a fan of Madonna, I wanted to know how her singles/albums were doing etc so then got me interested in charts and sales in general.

Well at the minute I think the only growth area is blu-ray, and with the PS3 expected to be the top selling console this will only help blu-rays increase even more, and since the disks are still relatively expensive it would give hmv higher revenues/profits if they focused on these more instead of cds/dvds which are still falling.

I think 150k today with over 700k in the week, I think having the extra tracks on the CD will mean it will sell a lot more overall, my mum is only buying it for the other tracks on the CD(first time I saw your face mainly) so maybe others who don't like the main song will still make a purchase.

If those sales are right the gap hasn't changed at all, with both women adding sales by +35% give or take 1% over Tuesday to Wednesday period

The BBC will reportedly scrap the daily repeats of Murder She Wrote from its afternoon schedule. The move follows BBC Trust criticism about the amount of repeats shown on the network, the Mirror reports. Money will instead be spent on new dramas and current affairs programming. "The obvious slot is after the Doctors soap," a source said. "Murder She Wrote will be replaced by something fresh that will appeal to the Trust and hopefully to lots of our viewers." A BBC spokesperson added: "Recent daytime dramas including Land Girls and Jimmy McGovern's Moving On, which both return this autumn for second series, have proved hugely popular with viewers." The main issue with this new 50% is the govt estimeated £600m income, but if people just leave or in this example just don't come the country will simply end up losing more money.
