Scandipop Top 100 Best Selling Singles 1980-2012
'Lay All Your Love On Me' had sold 21,000 UK Downloads by May 2010. In 1980, I knew many ABBA Fans who thought it was one of the best Tracks on 'Super Trouper'. But, when it came out as an expensive 12" Single in 1981 - not even extended - several ABBA Fans, I knew refused to buy it. It really was regarded as a rip off. (One ABBA Fan, I knew, went to buy it in her lunch hour, & came back without it. She called it a 'con job', & no way was she paying double the price of a normal Single for it, when it was not even extended. So ABBA really shot themselves in the foot, with the stupid way they released that Single!). So, the Track itself was fine. It was how it was released that put a lot of people off buying it. ABBA never did understand such matters. In 1980, Epic Records had tried to stop Bowie's 'Ashes To Ashes' rising from 4 to 1, & knocking 'The Winner Takes It All' off the top spot. They rush released a 12" version of 'TWTIA', in a Gatefold Sleeve. But, they wanted £3 for it, & it was not even remixed or extended. It was even more of a con than the 12" 'LAYLOM' in 1981. Needless to say, Bowie went to No.1, & the poor value ABBA 12" did not stop 'Winner' falling from No.1 to No.2.....

Scandipop Top 100 Best Selling Singles 1980-2012
In 1981, Alan Jones, (in 'Record Mirror'), called the 12" 'Lay All Your Love On Me', poor value for money. It was really just a 7" Single, (version), on expensive 12" Vinyl. The Book of 'NME' Singles Charts says it was extended, but it wasn't. Alan Jones predicted that its price, & poor value, would stop it being as big a Hit as it would have been on 7" He was right. It stalled at No.7. It deserved to get a lot higher than that. But, the format was pointless, & the Single was twice the price of every other Hit in the Charts. ABBA did not want it to be a Single, anyhow. Which is why they never made a Video for it. The Single was only released in few Countries. Just as in May 1978, several Countries got 'Eagle' as a Single, and the UK & Ireland, just had a long gap, between 'Take A Chance On Me', & 'Summer Night City' - no 'Eagle' inbetween.

Eurovision biggest sellers
Does 'Ring Ring's 40,000 UK Sales include the 12,000 that it sold in Downloads by May 2010? By May 2010 'Waterloo' had sold 43,000 in UK Downloads, & it looks like they have been added in. The Brotherhood Of Man Single is called 'Save Your Kisses For Me' - it is a myth that there is an 'All' in the Title. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Save_Your_Kisses_for_Me

The Story of NOW
Gordon Smart, 'The Sun's 'Expert' on Pop etc., said this, in Saturday's TV Magazine. (From 'The Sun'). "Madonna famously never appeared on any of the Now...albums. Her True Blue album had rave reviews in 1986 and huge sales - but Now 7 pushed her off the top spot and Now 8 kept her off it for months. Needless to say, the Material Girl didn't like it at all." So, he said that it did go to No.1, but says that Now 7 knocked her off No.1, & Now 8 carried on keeping her off the No.1 spot. In fact, 'Now 7' did not enter the Charts, (at No.1), until W/E 23rd August 1986, & whilst it did send 'True Blue' down to No.2, the Madonna Album had been at No.1 for 6 Weeks by then. No.1 Albums can only stop No.2 Albums from being No.1. 'Now 7' only stopped 'True Blue' for 1 Week. Madonna's Album was not at No.2 again until W/E 1st November 1986, & this time Paul Simon's 'Graceland', held it at No.2. 'True Blue' had a 3rd No.2 Week, on W/E 3rd January 1987, & that was the first, and only time, that 'Now 8' stopped it from being No.1. So much, for 'Now 8' stopping 'True Blue', from being No.1, 'For months'...... The Madonna Album that was most affected by a 'Now' Album, was 'Like A Virgin'. It was No.1, for 2 Weeks, in 1985, but, before it got to No.1, it was held at No.2, for 5 Weeks, by 'Now 5'. On W/E 28th September & W/E 5th October 1985, 'Hounds Of Love', by Kate Bush, replaced 'Like A Virgin' at No.1, & the Madonna Album was No.2 for those 2 Weeks. On W/E 12th October, 'Like A Virgin' returned to No.1, for a 2nd, & final Week, & Kate Bush was a No.2. On W/E 19th October, Kate retuned to No.1, & Madonna fell to No.3, & 'Like A Virgin' never climbed higher than No.3, after that. If the 'Now' Albums had, had their own Compilation Chart, in 1985, 'Like A Virgin' would have had 7 No.1 Weeks, & not 2. And, in 1986 & early 1987, 'True Blue', would have had 8 No.1 Weeks, & not 6. So 'Now' Albums cost Madonna 7 Weeks at No.1.

I can only find one other Hit that was called La La La. It was by Female Singer, Massiel, & it Won the 1968 Eurovision Song Contest. It was the Spanish Entry. She beat Cliff Richard's Congratulations, by 1 Vote. He had a much bigger Global Hit with his Entry, & Massiel only reached No.35 in the UK Charts, with Cliff having a No.1 Hit in the UK, & 5 other Countries.

Simon - I asked the Question to find out the answer. I haven't a clue who it is! I'm finding that one very hard to research. It can't be Vera Lynn, as although she had 3 Hits, in the very first UK Singles Chart, (November 1952), she did not have her first Hit Album until November 1981. It was a No.25 Hit. She had her first Top 10 Album in September 2009 - a No.1. So, her first Top 10 Album was not far off 28 Years, since her first Hit Album. It has taken Agnetha, (as a Solo Artist), almost 30 Years, to have a Top 10 Album.

007 Chart Commentary - 19th May 2013
Agnetha's Album, is not only her 1st UK Top 10 Solo Album, but it also stops ABBA from getting a 458th Week in the Top 75. Gold has to be content to be at No.76, this Week. (It will likely be in the Top 75 next Week). It is The Number Of The Beast, for ABBA, this Week - Gold's 666th Top 100 Week..... QUESTION - It has taken Agnetha almost 30 Years to have a Top 10 Solo Album, in the UK. (Her first UK Solo Album, Wrap Your Arms Around Me, entered the Charts in June 1983). Can anyone tell me which Act has taken as long - or longer - between their first Hit Album, & their first Top 10 Album? In December 1979, his previous No.1 Album - Greatest Hits - replaced ABBA's Greatest Hits Vol.2 at No.1 The ABBA Album then returned to No.1 - displacing Rod - on W/E 12th January 1980. OCC: ABBA becomes UK's second best selling album
The OCC have announced that Gold, by ABBA is now 15,000 UK Sales ahead of Sgt Pepper, by The Beatles. THE UK'S TOP 5 BIGGEST SELLING ALBUMS (To W/E 18th May 2013) 1. GREATEST HITS - QUEEN - (1981) - 5.9 MILLION 2. GOLD - GREATEST HITS - ABBA - (1992) - 5.1 MILLION 3. SGT PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND - THE BEATLES - (1967) - 5.1 MILLION 4. 21 - ADELE - (2011) - 4.6 MILLION 5. (WHAT'S THE STORY) MORNING GLORY? - OASIS - (1995) - 4.6 MILLION The OCC delayed announcing this, as they wanted to do so around the time of the 2013 ESC in Sweden. Which they have. The Queen Album has around 535,000 Sales added in from 2000's Triple Hits Set, The Platinum Collection. It was decided to do that in 2006, when The OCC were compiling the UK's Top 100 All Time Best Selling Albums. It was about a 3rd of TPC's Sales to that point. It was also given 50% of the Sales of Greatest Hits I & II, from 1994. That Double CD Set sold 50,000 to 80,000, in the UK, giving the first 2 Queen Hits Albums 25,000 to 40,000 Sales from that. Which gave Greatest Hits (One), & Greatest Hits II, 560,000 to 575,000 extra Sales, from the 1994 Double Set, & 2000 Triple Set. It means that Greatest Hits has sold about 5,325,000 to 5,340,000, as a stand-alone Album. Greatest Hits II, also got around 535,000 Sales, from TPC. & 25,000 to 40,000 Sales from Greatest Hits I & II. So its Sales have also had 560,000 to 575,000 added to them (Alan Jones admitted the added Sales, a few Years ago, in Music Week). But, ABBA Gold did not get any Sales from Forever Gold, (1996), which contained Gold, & More Gold. It sold 61,000, so both Gold & More Gold, should get 30,500 Sales each from it. (If ABBA were to be treated in the same way as Queen....). Apparently, Universal have got several plans for the 40th Anniversary of ABBA's ESC Win. (2014). So, they may well give a boost to Gold's Sales. It is not widely known, but the UK ESC Jury decided to award Waterloo Zero Points, at the 1974 Contest. The UK Jury disliked it.....

First #1s 15+ years since the debut
Lulu, (as Lulu & The Luvvers), had her first UK Hit, (No.7), in May 1964, with 'Shout' - a 1959 Isley Brothers song. In October 1993 Take That Feat. Lulu, took 'Relight My Fire' to No.1, in the UK. It was a 1979 Dan Hartman song. So, it took Lulu 29 Years & 5 Months, to have a UK No.1 Hit.

How high will Judy Garland chart this week?
It will either be No.1 or No.2 on Sunday But Judy Garland does not sing a note of it. I've watched the YouTube clip over & over, & Judy is in the scenes where it is sung, but she just watches as The Munchkins sing it. And it is The Munchkins who are credited with the Song on 'The Wizard Of Oz' OST Album. That's why The OCC will not be crediting it to Judy - who has only ever had one UK Hit Single. It was 'The Man That Got Away', from the 1954 Film, 'A Star Is Born'. Judy took it to No.18 in 1955. Amazingly, Judy's original version of 'Over The Rainbow' has never been a UK Hit. It has been a Top 40 Hit for 3 other Acts, but it has never reached the Top 10.

Your opinions on the Thatcher chart campaign
I intensely disliked Mrs. Thatcher, but I think that it is wrong to celebrate her death. It is not as if she was as evil as Hitler or Stalin. However, if some people want to celebrate her death, & are helping to make a big Hit out of 'Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead', then that is up to them. I hear that many are calling for the Song to be banned from the Charts, but I do not believe in banning Hits, just because others disapprove of them. Incidently, it is right that Judy Garland is not credited with the Song. If you watch 'The Wizard Of Oz', you can see that Judy does not sing a note of that Song. The Munchkins sing it. She is in the same scene, but she does not sing. Radio One may ignore the Song, in Sunday's Top 40 - afraid of the Right Wing Press creating a huge fuss, if they play it.

Ironically, the Duran Duran, & Pink Floyd Albums, at 3 & 4, were not No.1 Hits. They both reached No.2. The Bruce Springsteen Album, at No.16, only reached No.17 in the Charts. And the ELO, Meat Loaf, & Kate Bush Albums - at 22, 23, & 24 - Peaked at No.4, No.9, & No.3. Several more Albums, in the Top 100 did not reach No.1. So, it is all a matter of how an Album is remembered that counts - not how big a Hit it was. In August 2006, BBC Radio 2 broadcast this Top 100 Albums List, from listeners Votes. Each person could Vote for several Albums, as long as they had reached No.1 - and were not 'Hits' Albums. iTunes Weekly Thread W/C 10th March 2013
Agnetha has released a Gary Barlow Song as her German Single. It is called 'The One Who Loves You Now'. I like both that, & the International Single, ('When You Really Loved Someone'), but, I like the German Single more.

Singles, which were released in UK (1975)
PopChartFreak - As regards 'Movie Star', by Harpo..... Only 1 ABBA lady sang backing on it - Frida. Agnetha was not on it. It was a far bigger Hit in many Continental European Countries than it was in the UK - No.1 for 6 Weeks in Sweden, 4 Weeks in Germany, & for 11 Weeks in Norway etc. It only reached no.24 in the UK, & No.13 in Ireland.
