007 Chart Commentary - 12th Feb 2012
The Madonna Single looks set to be her least successful Lead Single, for a New Album - ever. At least in the UK. By Lead Single, I mean the one that is released to go with a New Album. I'm aware that in October 1982, Everybody flopped completely, & that ended up on the Madonna Album. But, that Album was not released here until February 1984, & Holiday was really the Lead Single with that, & that Single was a No.6 Hit, that Year. As Mick Jagger is on a Top 5 Single, at the same time that Paul McCartney is on a Top 5 Album, I thought that I'd do some Chart Statistics, regarding this. Points C) & D) may sound contradictory - at first - but, they are not. I wasn't sure where to Post this. I hope it is OK in Sports? Afterall, Tom is an Olympic Diver etc. Here is British Diver Tom Daley, & the rest of the GB Diving Team doing a miming & dancing video of 'I'm Sexy And I Know It', the 2011 Global Hit, by LMFAO. It is the first time that I've actually liked the Single - as this Video makes it far more fun!

iTunes Chart: January 2012 (Part III)
'Paradise' was disqualified, (from the Chart), for several weeks, because it was a Free Gift with pre-orders of 'Mylo Xyloto'. Over 118,000 copies of the Single were disqualified. The same will happen if Madonna has some kind of 'deal', where you get her Single for nothing, if you pre-order her Album. I think it is fair. The Chart is supposed to be for Singles that people actually buy - not what they get as a Freebie. It is down to Madonna, if she wants her Single to be able to have all of its Sales counted, in the UK. (Her Record Company, too - but, she is not the sort of Woman who lets the Record Company call all the shots).

No - The OCC gave no reasons for the decision. Only that that they had discussed 'G. I.Blues', & its 22 No.1 Weeks, & had decided to regard it as a Film Soundtrack, & not as a Studio Album. 'A Hard Day's Night', by The Beatles, was not mentioned to me, by them. I just thought about that Beatles Album, later.

Last Week, The OCC had a discussion, & decided not to count those 2 Elvis Soundtracks as Studio Albums. That's why they are saying that Adele's 19 No.1 Weeks are the most ever by a Solo Artist Studio Album. It is a very precise distinction, as Elvis recorded 'G.I. Blues' in the Studio. He was a Solo Artist too. But, The OCC have decided not to count the 22 No.1 Weeks of that Album, as being by a Studio Album. They see it only as a Film Soundtrack. However, they do regard 'A Hard Day's Night', by The Beatles, (1964), as a Studio Album, even though it was the Soundtrack to the Film, of the same name. So they say that it is one of 4 Beatles Albums to be still ahead of Adele's Album, in No.1 Weeks. (It was No.1 for 21 Weeks).

It has been to No.1 in Germany, (still there at present), Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, & The Netherlands. It is currently in its 22nd Top 10 Week there. (In The Netherlands). It has spent 20 of them in the Top 5 - 4 at No.1, & 10 at No.2. It is at No.5 there now. It is on its way to No.1 in Austria - a No.46 to No.3 leap - in its 2nd Chart Week. I love it. However - don't you think that the Intro reminds you of the Childrens' Nursery Rhyme, 'Baa Baa Black Sheep'? Gotye is a Belgian/Australian. The Female - Kimbra - is from New Zealand.

ABBA were going to release it as a Single, in December 1980, but changed their minds. That was a pity, as they'd have ended up with 2 simultaneous Top 10 Hits, in the UK & Irish Charts - as well as in Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, Norway, etc. (With the 'Super Trouper' Single). I think it would do a lot better in the January UK iTunes Charts, had it been a Single, in 1980. Many people in the UK are not aware that the Song exists. It actually reaches the Singles Chart Top 10, (via Downloads), in some European Countries - some Year's, anyhow. Sweden - No.4 in 2008, No.5 in 2009, & No.9 in 2010. Norway - No.5 in 2009. And, last January, it jumped from No.47 to No.8, in The Netherlands - their 24th Top 10 Hit there. (It is currently No.70 in The Netherlands Top 100).

What are you buying in the HMV sale this week?
The stuff in HMV is massively over-priced. It is better to sell a lot of something at a competative price, than far less of something at an extortionate price. Sadly, that simple idea has by-passed HMV. As far as I'm concerned, if it folds, (eventually), it is its own fault - for selling things at such rip off prices. I have a brother, who will not use Amazon.uk. Instead, he thinks it is cool to go in HMV, to shop. In early December, he bought a Box Set of the 1970's TV Series, 'Department S'. HMV charged him £70 for it. At the same time, he could have got it from Amazon.uk, for £36! He bought an £8 Horror DVD, at the same time. Amazon.uk were selling it for £4! In both cases, Postage Free. So - my brother paid £78, at HMV, for 2 items, that he could have got for £40 at Amazon.uk. HMV are their own worst enemies, as most people are not as stupid, as my brother!

Guys, an Italian fellow, who calls himself Me, (?!), has Posted every No.1 Single , (from the various UK Charts), on his Website. You have to scroll across the page, to see all of the No.1's. They include the NME, & Melody Maker No.1's. The Decades take a little while to load, but, they do so after a very short time. Top 65 best selling Xmas hits ever!!
The OCC worked on the List in September. Well, one of their Staff did so. As with all such Lists he, (& maybe others), made the final decision as to what was to go in it. (Channel 5 have definitely excluded some Hits, that were in The OCC List - on the grounds that the Chart contained more than one version of those Songs). 1) It is not meant to be a Christmas Themed Songs List. It is meant to reflect the Singles that sold the most over the Christmas period, in the UK. 2) I saw the initial List, & it did have Band Aid 20 in it - with 1,154,821 Sales. It also had Band Aid II in it - 425,908 sales. 3) Halleujah, by Alexandra Burke, was in the initial List - 1,222,079 Sales. 4) In the List that I saw, White Christmas, by Bing Crosby, was in 4th place, with 1,461,843 Sales. The Total in the List has had almost 472,000 of those Sales removed. 5) Harry Belafonte's Mary's Boy Child, was in too - 1,182,621 Sales. 6) It even had Killing In The Name, by Rage Against The Machine, in it - 713,240 Sales. 7) As far as I know, they did include 1981 Sales for the St Winifred's School Choir, Hit. It was only the 20th Best Seller of 1980 - in the Year End Chart that included the entire Year. Super Trouper, by ABBA, was 4th, & I believe that sold 709,000 in 1980. The ABBA Hit then sold only 31,000 more in 1981, even though it did this, in January 1981:, 5 - 8 - 28 - 48 - 71. That's because Sales were very low in January 1981. The St. Winifred's School Choir Hit, can't have sold much more than the ABBA Hit, in January 1981. It did this - 1 - 6 - 22 - 58 - 70. Maybe 45,000 to 55,000 Sales? 8) As regards the other 2 Band Aid Hits, & Harry Belafonte, not being in the List - it looks like a Channel 5 decision, to me. They obviously did not want to show the same Song, more than once. So, they chose to show/include only the versions that are the most well known. That's the Boney M, Mary's Boy Child, & the original Band Aid's, Do They Know It's Christmas?, from 1984. (In other words, it is not The OCC's decision, that the other versions were excluded from the Channel 5 Chart). So, The OCC were not ignoring those Hits - Channel 5 were. 9) Stay Another Day, got 768,444 Sales, in the List, I saw. Rounded up to 770,000. The OCC clearly have 2 'Sets' of 1994 - 1996 Sales, in their Files, & the Guy who did the Chart looked at the lower Totals for the East 17 Hit. (I know him, so I will ask him about it, in January). 10) I was not aware that MW's Alan Jones had declared Fairytale Of New York a UK Million Seller. I do know that The OCC added up its Annual Totals for 1987/1988, (No.2 Hit), & 1991/1992, (No.36 Hit), & then they added in Downloads from 2004 to 2010. This gave a Total of 815,000 - not including its December 2011 Sales, of course. I don't think that Fairytale Of New York has sold a Million. It would have had to suddenly gain 180,000 Sales, that it never had before. Unless it is supposed to have got them in December 2011.....

It matters not how little a percentage Amazon have of the Download Market. The Military Wives Single will sell hugely on CD, anyhow. (Many people plan to buy it as gifts for Friends & Family).

Predict : Little Mix- Cannonball 1st week sales
It may sell 300,000 to 400,000. But, what does it matter? It is awful. Matt Cardle sold over 400,000 in Week 1, & he is already finding it hard to remain very popular. The trouble with The X Factor is that it throws up so many temporary 'Stars'. Even Leona Lewis has lost much popularity on an International scale, & JLS are already selling less than they used to - in the UK. They don't mean a thing outside the UK & Ireland.....

The Little Mix cover is awful. But, I hope they enjoy their Week at No.1 with it. It almost certainly will not be the Christmas No.1. That will be the No.1 Single in the Chart of Sunday 25th December. As to Matt Cardle's 1st Week Sales, in 2010 - what does it matter? He's already in decline. Oh - And people who think the Little Mix Single is awful, are just as entitled to think that as those who think it is terrific. If they want to be a Global success they'll have to do better than that!
