  1. An interesting Top 30.

    As Adele has returned to No.1 in the Album Chart, I decided to work out which Solo Females have spent the most Weeks at No.1, in the UK, in a Calendar Year - by looking at the Singles Chart, & the Albums Chart, for Solo Females with 10, (or more), Weeks at No.1. S = Singles Weeks at No.1, & A = Albums Weeks at No.1 FEMALE SOLO ARTISTS WITH THE MOST UK No.1 WEEKS IN A CALENDAR YEAR (Singles Weeks + Albums Weeks) (To W/E 30th April 2011) 1) Adele - S = 5 + A = 12 = 17 Weeks (2011 - So Far!) 2) Leona Lewis - S = 10 + A = 6 = 16 Weeks (2007) 3) Celine Dion - S = 7 + A = 7 = 14 Weeks (1995) 4) Connie Francis - S = 12 + A = 0 = 12 Weeks (1958) 5)=Kylie Minogue - S = 5 + A = 6 = 11 Weeks (1988) 5)=Cher - S + 5 + A = 6 = 11 Weeks (1991) 5)=Alanis Morissette - S = 0 + A = 11 Weeks (1996) 5)=Rihanna - S = 10 + A = 1 = 11 Weeks (2007) 5)=Lady GaGa - S = 7 + A = 4 = 11 Weeks (2009) 10)=Madonna - S = 4 + A = 6 = 10 Weeks (1986) 10)=Madonna - S = 4 + A = 6 = 10 Weeks (1990) 10)=Duffy - S = 5 + A = 5 = 10 Weeks (2008)
  3. As The OCC work with Virgin, (on Chart Books), I'm pretty certain that any outlets that Virgin have - to sell Music - count towards the UK Charts.
  4. We don't know if 'Judas' will miss the UK No.1 spot - yet. It went in at No.14 on less than 2 Days Sales, & it was rushed out so fast that many people would not have been aware that it had been released. Just because 'Born This Way' Peaked at No.3, in the UK, does not mean anything. I recall that ABBA were said to be 'on the way out', when 'Summer Night City' Peaked at No.5 in 1978. And they failed to reach No.1 for 2.5 Years, after 'Take A Chance On Me'. (6 Singles Peaked from No.5 to No.2). They still had 2 more No.1's in 1980, & 2 UK No.1 Albums, during the 2.5 Years of no UK No.1 Singles. As to 'Alejandro' Peaking at No.7 - it had sold well over a Million on 'The Fame', in the UK, so, it was held back by that. The Video was rather off-putting as well - too dark/gloomy. Even The Beatles did not reach No.1 with every New Single. Why expect it of Lady GaGa? I think that 'Judas' is a far better, & more interesting Single, than 'Born This Way'.

Robbie, The BPI List, (To Mid June 2009), was the most recent 'All Time UK Albums' List that The OCC provided. (I'm sure that they will up-date it, before too long). However, The BPI List has flaws in it:, 1) It gives 'Greatest Hits II', by Queen, a release Date of 2000. It actually came out in 1991. 2) The Oasis Album came out in 1995 - not 1996. 3) The Sales of both 'Bad' & 'The Immaculate Collection' are exactly the same as they were in the November 2006 List. The BPI List makes it look like neither of those Albums sold even 1 copy, between November 2006 & June 2009! 4) 'War Of The World's was a 1978 release - not 1985. SALES - I believe that The OCC added about 560,000 to 566,000 Sales of 'The Platinum Collection', to both 'Greatest Hits' (One), & 'Greatest Hits II', by Queen. (Plus another 560,000 to 566,000 to the Sales of 'Greatest Hits III'). Basically, the UK Sales of 'The Platinum Collection' were divided by 3, & each 3rd was added to the previous 3 Queen 'Hits' Albums Sales. However - even with those Sales removed, the first Queen 'Hits' Album would still be No.1 in the UK's All Time Best Selling Albums. 'Greatest Hits II' would drop from 8th place, to about 14th or 15th, with the Sales removed.

Tonyttt31 - Yes, the Everyhit List is almost 4.5 Years out of date. It is the one that The OCC published in November 2006. Since then, the ABBA Album is up from 4th to 3rd place, with around 4,900,000 Sales. 'Thriller' is up from 8th place to 5th place.

Suedehead2 - 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', (& its initial 13 consecutive No.1 Weeks), is only the Album Chart Record for an Artist Album, as regards a No.1 Album's first Chart Weeks. The 'Record Holder' is actually the 'My Fair Lady' Album, (Original Broadway Cast), from 1958. That went in at No.1, & stayed there for 19 Weeks. Here is the Artist Album List, anyhow:, ARTIST NUMBER 1 ALBUMS - WITH 11 - OR MORE - CONSECUTIVE WEEKS AT No.1 (TOTAL WEEKS AT NO.1 IN BRACKETS - AS IS THE YEAR OF RELEASE) This List shows the UK No.1 ARTIST Albums, which have had the most consecutive Weeks at No.1. Bray - I know that Bob Marley & The Wailers were No.1, for 12 Weeks, in a row, with 'Legend', in 1984. However, when I said that Elton John was the last Artist to have 11 Weeks in a row, I meant the last Solo Artist. Adele & Elton are the only 2 Solo Artists, to manage more than 10 consecutive Weeks, since Elvis Presley, in 1962. (17 consecutive Weeks - 'Blue Hawaii' - Released in 1961)

In today's 'The Sun', Richard Bacon, claims that when '21' gets its 11th No.1 Week tomorrow, it will be the first Album in 15 Years, (1996), to achieve it. If he means 11 Weeks in a row, it has not actually been done since 'Elton John's Greatest Hits'. (Between 1974 & 1975). If he means in Total, then, 'Jagged Little Pill', by Alanis Morissette, was No.1 for 11 Weeks in 1996, but, it needed 3 'Runs' to get them. Anyhow, 'Spice', (Spice Girls), had 15 Weeks at No.1, from 1996 to 1997, but it needed 5 'Runs' to get them. From 1997 to 1998, 'Urban Hymns', by The Verve, spent 12 Weeks at No.1, but it needed 3 'Runs' to get them. In 1999 - 2000, 'Come On Over', by Shania Twain, spent 11 Weeks at No.1 - but, that needed 3 'Runs'. Basically, the UK Media simply do not seem to understand the difference between No.1 Albums that are No.1 in consecutive Weeks, & those that need more than 1 'Run' to get their total No.1 Weeks. And, Journalists are too stupid, & lazy, to do any research.....so they repeat garbage, from each other.
  10. zeus555 posted a post in a topic in UK Charts
The 'Guardian' Article says that the 12 consecutive Weeks at No.1 of 'Legend', (1984), is the 'All Time Record', that Adele might beat. As usual, a Journalist has misunderstood. The OCC have said that 'Legend' was the last Album to spend more than 11 successive Weeks at No.1. That it managed 12. Somehow, this is interpreted as only 'Legend' has had 12 Weeks in a row at No.1. Apart from Film Soundtracks, (by Various Artists), & the 'My Fair Lady' Stage Cast Album, there have been several Albums that have spent more than 12 Weeks in a row at No.1. The last was in 1970 - 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', by Simon & Garfunkel. It went in at No.1, & spent its first 13 Chart Weeks there. (It later went back to No.1 on 7 occasions, & managed 33 No.1 Weeks over-all).

The achieveable Record for Adele, would be to manage 14 Weeks at No.1 - consecutive - with '21'. If she can do that, it will be THE UK Chart Record, for the 1st 14 Weeks of an Album, in the Charts. She will never achieve the 33 No.1 Weeks of 'Bridge Over Troubled Water'. It needed 8 No.1 'Runs' to get them, but Adele will not do that. Nor will she manage the 30 consecutive No.1 Weeks of The Beatles 1st Album - 'Please Please Me' (1963). However, the Album No.1 Record, for a Solo Artist Album, is 'Blue Hawaii', by Elvis Presley, in 1962. It spent 17 Weeks, in a row, at No.1 - with an 18th Week at No.1, earlier in 1962. He holds 2nd place too - 12 Weeks at No.1, with 'G.I. Blues', in 1961. It had also been at No.1 twice more, earlier in 1962 - for 7 & 3 Weeks. So, it was at No.1 for 22 Weeks, over-all - the most by a Solo Album. The 3rd Solo Album, with the most consecutive No.1 Weeks, is 'Greatest Hits', by Elton John. 11 No.1 Weeks - 1974/1975. 'But Seriously', by Phil Collins, spent 15 Weeks at No.1, between 1989 & 1990, but that was in 2 'Runs' - 8 + 7 Weeks.

ADELE'S 10th NUMBER 1 WEEK - NEW ANGLES As Adele's 21 is No.1, for a 10th Week, in today's UK Chart, (W/E 9th April Album Chart), I decided to try to find new angles on these Chart Feats, that she adds to each Week. The new Angles are based on how long No.1 Albums have spent there - consecutively - in their FIRST Chart Weeks. Adele is the 1st since 1970 to manage as long as her 1st 10 Weeks at No.1! @@@ (@@@ = With a STUDIO Album) SEE:, 1) 9 WEEKS AT No.1 - 21 became the 1st Studio Album to spend its 1st 9 Weeks at No.1 since Super Trouper- ABBA (1980/1981) 2) 10 WEEKS AT No.1 - It becomes the 1st Studio Album to spend more than its 1st 9 Weeks at No.1 since Bridge Over Troubled Water, by Simon & Garfunkel, which spent its first 13 Weeks at No.1, in 1970. (It had 7 further Runs at No.1 = 33 No.1 Weeks over-all). 3) 10 WEEKS AT No.1 - It also becomes the 1st Album to spend more than its 1st 9 Weeks at No.1, since, Legend, by Bob Marley & The Wailers was No.1, for its first 12 Weeks, in 1984. 4) MORE THAN 13 WEEKS AT No.1 - IF - BY CHANCE - it manages more than its 1st 13 Weeks at No.1, it will become the only Studio Album to achieve that - ever. (Whilst Sgt Pepper, by The Beatles, had a Run of 23 Weeks at No.1, in 1967, its 1st Chart Week was at No.8, before it began that 23 Week Run. It eventually managed 27 No.1 Weeks, in 4 1967/1968 Runs at the Top. In 1969/1970, Abbey Road managed 17 Weeks at No.1, but that was in 2 Runs - 11 Weeks + 6 Weeks). 5) MORE THAN 13 WEEKS AT No.1 - Indeed, IF it manages more than its 1st 13 Weeks at No.1 it becomes the ONLY Album - ever - to achieve that! (In 1978, the Grease Soundtrack was No.1 for 13 Weeks, but it took 14 Weeks to reach No.1 - having entered at No.36. Earlier in 1978, the Saturday Night Fever, Soundtrack was No.1 for 18 Weeks, but it took 9 Weeks to reach No.1 - entering at No.39). 6) OTHER BEATLES ALBUMS - MORE THAN 13 WEEKS AT No.1 In 1963, Please Please Me was No.1 for 30 consecutive Weeks. However it entered at No.8, & took 6 Weeks to climb to No.1. In 1963/1964, With The Beatles was No.1 for 21 consecutive Weeks, but it began them in its 2nd Chart Week - having entered at No.2. In 1964, A Hard Day's Night, was No.1 for 21 Weeks in a row - but, they began in Week 2. It entered at No.3...
  14. Vidcapper - I realise that UK Album Sales were very low in the 1950's, & Film Sound Tracks were mainly what people bought. However, to get to No.1, you always have to outsell everything else in the Charts that Week - however low your No.1 Sales are. In that sense, every No.1 Week is valid - no matter which Decade it was in. Yes, The Beatles have the UK Album Chart Records for the most consecutive Weeks at No.1. 1) Please Please Me - 30 Weeks 2) Sgt. Pepper... - 23 Weeks (27 Weeks in Total) 3)=With The Beatles - 21 Weeks 3)=A Hard Day's Night - The Beatles - 21 Weeks Believe it or not, even 'Please Please Me' does not hold the Chart Record, for the most No.1 Weeks by an Artist Album. That Feat belongs to 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', by Simon & Garfunkel - 33 Weeks at No.1! However, it needed 8 'Runs' at No.1, to get them - and its longest consecutive 'Run' was for 13 Weeks. (I see that a 'Deluxe' Edition of it is released on March 30th, so it may Re-Chart. The Deluxe version has 3 Disks - the original Album, a 'Greatest Hits' Disk, & a DVD! The 'Hits' Disk' has 17 Tracks - and they are versions of their Hits that have never been released in the UK before)
  15. Remember - a lot of Adele's No.1 Album Feats have really only been compared to the 1980 to 2011 period - so far. The UK Album Chart began in late July 1956. Suedehead - 'South Pacific' was No.1 for 115 Weeks - not 155 Weeks. 70 of them were consecutive - including all of 1959. 'The Sound Of Music' is the next 'Most No.1 Weeks' Album - 70 - non-consecutive. Then it is 'The King & I' - yet another Film Soundtrack. That spent 48 Weeks at No.1 - non-consecutive.

ADELE (Her latest UK Chart Feats!) 21 has just gone to No.1 - for a 3rd time - in the USA 'Billboard' Top 200. In the meantime, her UK Chart Feats continue anabated..... A) HER 3rd SIMULTANEOUS No.1 & No.2 ALBUM WEEK For a 3rd time she holds the No.1 & No.2 Album Positions. She becomes only the 4th Act to achieve the Feat, for more than 2 Weeks. The other 3 Acts were - The George Mitchell Minstrels - 3 Weeks, (1961 to 1962), The Beatles - 19 Weeks, (1963 to 1964), & Mike Oldfield - 4 Weeks, (1974). B) THE 20th ACT TO MANAGE A 2nd DOUBLE TOP Adele becomes only the 20th Act to have more than 1 Double Top. As well as being only the 4th Solo Female to have more than 1. The others being Madonna, (4 times), Lady GaGa, (twice), & Rihanna, (twice). C) IT IS HER HER 5th DOUBLE TOP WEEK Adele has now Topped both UK Charts for 5 Weeks, with the same Single & Album. This has only been achieved 5 few times, since The Beatles did it in 1963/1964. THE WEEKS AT No.1 OF THE ‘21’ ALBUM BY ADELE - IN CONTEXT I hope that these 8 ‘Points’ make sense! I realise that I go into every genre, & gender, of Album/Acts to make them. Suedehead2, ABBA's 'Super Trouper', was not the last Studio Album to manage 9 consecutive Weeks at No.1. The last one, was in 1986 - 'Brothers In Arms' - 10 Weeks. And, 'Kings Of The Wild Frontier', by Adam & The Ants, was No.1 for 10 consecutive weeks in 1981 - having been No.1 for 2 Weeks, earlier in 1981. 'Super Trouper' was the last Studio Album, with Female Lead Vocals, to spend as many as 9 successive Weeks at No.1.

  20. Bray - My List does not show which Acts have managed the 'Double Top' for more than 1 Week. It shows which Acts - on totally separate occasions - have managed it more than once Adele has 'only' managed it once - for 3 Weeks. (This does not mean she has managed it 3 times - she has managed it once). That is how Guinness used to count the Feat - and The OCC count it that way too. As do I. Here is the List of the Acts who've achieved it for the most Weeks. This List has all of the Acts who've managed it for 5 - or more - Weeks. Since The Beatles did it, for 5 consecutive Weeks, (in December 1963 to January 1964), the only Acts to have the Double Top, for as many as 5 Weeks in a row, are Celine Dion, (1995), & James Blunt, (2005). 21. Mart!n - There are a few errors in your List:, 1) Meatloaf did not achieve it for 5 consecutive Weeks in 1993. His 1993 Entries should be:, 30/10/1993 3 Meat Loaf Bat Out Of Hell II: Back Into Hell // I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That) 27/11/1993 2 Meat Loaf Bat Out Of Hell II: Back Into Hell // I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That) 2) Wet Wet Wet did not achieve it for 5 consecutive Weeks in 1994. Their 1994 Entries should be:, 30/07/1994 4 Wet Wet Wet End Of Part One (Their Greatest Hits) // Love Is All Around 03/09/1994 1 Wet Wet Wet End Of Part One (Their Greatest Hits) // Love Is All Around 3) You have the Cheryl Cole Entry, (2009), the wrong way round. It should be '3 Words' 1st,, & 'Fight For This Love' 2nd. (The Album is always shown before the Single). @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ THE 19 ACTS WHO HAVE ACHIEVED THE FEAT MORE THAN ONCE:, 1) THE BEATLES - 15 TIMES - 45 WEEKS 2)=ELVIS PRESLEY - 7 TIMES - 22 WEEKS 2)=THE SHADOWS - 7 TIMES - 13 WEEKS ** 4)=ABBA - 4 TIMES - 13 WEEKS 4)=CLIFF RICHARD - 4 TIMES - 11 WEEKS 4)=QUEEN - 4 TIMES - 8 WEEKS 4)=MADONNA - 4 TIMES - 8 WEEKS 8)=ROLLING STONES - 3 TIMES - 5 WEEKS 8)=THE POLICE - 3 TIMES - 4 WEEKS 10)=ROD STEWART - 2 TIMES - 7 WEEKS 10)=T. Oops! I failed to spot that the Kids From Fame also had the Top 2 Albums. (I've corrected my earlier Post, now). They did it for 2 Weeks - in October & November 1982. So, Adele is the 10th Act to achieve it - not the 9th. Thanks to Alan Jones, 'Music Week' Report, for the Kids From Fame Feat. However, in the Report, he also has these comments:, 1) He points out that the George Mitchell Minstrels did it in 1961 & 1962, but only gives 1964 for The Beatles. They achieved the Feat in 1963, too. (5 Weeks in 1963 & 14 Weeks in 1964). 2) That The Corrs were the last Act to manage the Top 2 Albums - in March 1999. It was April 1999. 3) That Adele is the first Female to achieve it. Unless you say SOLO Female, that is not a fair statement - the George Mitchell Minstrels, ABBA, the Kids From Fame, & The Corrs, all managed it - & all had Female Singers.

I know that some people will be wondering if Adele is the 1st Act to have the Top 2 Albums in the same Week. Others will assume that maybe Adele, The Corrs, The Beatles, & Bruce Springsteen, are the only Acts to manage the Feat. In fact:, 1) Adele is the 10th Act to achieve it. 2) She's the 1st Solo Female to do so. Suedehead2 - If anyone says that The Shadows did not have 2 simultaneous Top 5 Albums, in January 1963, they have to disqualify John Lennon, in February 1981, too. ('Summer Holiday' was a Cliff Richard & The Shadows Album, & 'The Next Time/Bachelor Boy' was a Cliff Richard & The Shadows Single). The Shadows also had a Top 5 Single & Album - at the same time - as The Shadows - which is why I credited them with 2 Top 5 Singles, & 2 Top 5 Albums, in the W/E 31st January 1963 Charts. John Lennon was credited on 2 Top 5 Singles & Albums, in the W/E 7th February 1981 Chart. However - one of those Top 5 Albums, (the No.1 that Week), was credited as a John Lennon & Yoko Ono Album. ('Double Fantasy'). If The Shadows can't be credited with a January 1963 Cliff Richard & The Shadows Album, then - to be consistent - we can't say that 'Double Fantasy' was a John Lennon Album. Look at the Cover of 'Double Fantasy' - It is clearly credited to both John & Yoko:, http://www.chartstats.com/albuminfo.php?id=5162 Personally - to save such matters arising - I regard any Act who is credited on an Album, as having that Hit Album. So 'Double Fantasy' can be called a John Lennon Album, & 'Summer Holiday' can be called a Shadows Album.....

Bray - I see what you mean. I will give 'Sex On Fire' 13 'Changes in direction' - as you have. (I've corrected my previous Post).
