Bray - I get 14 'Changes in direction' for 'Sex On Fire', because I'm counting its drop from 1 to 2, as one - you aren't. But, to me, if you are at No.1, & you drop to No.2, you have moved 'Down' - a 'Change in direction'. I've added 'He'll Have To Go' - Jim Reeves, (1960), & 'A Scottish Soldier' - Andy Stewart, (1961), to my Post, regarding Top 40 Hits with the most 'Changes in direction'.

Suedehead2 & Bray - Thanks for clarifying how Alan Jones came up with 13 Top 40 'Changes in direction', for Adele's 'Make You Feel My Love'. Once I realised how he's calculated, I decided to check for myself. Alan is wrong - Adele does NOT hold the Top 40 record, for such rises & falls, with the same Hit - in one Chart Run. (The Adele Single is on its 3rd Chart Run). (If you Guys would check my 'findings' - Thanks). @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ 1) He'll Have To Go - Jim Reeves (1960) Like the Adele Single, (so far), this Jim Reeves Hit also 'Changed direction' 13 times in its Top 40 'Run'. In its 2nd Top 40 'Run', to be precise. It had previously spent a Week in the Top 40, (No.36), in the W/E 26th March 1960 Chart. W/E 9th April 1960 31-16-22-14-17-16-18-18-14-17-22-12-12-20-22 22-27-25-26-30-30-36-36-30-30-36 @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ 2) A Scottish Soldier - Andy Stewart (1961) This Hit spent 40 Weeks in the Top 50 - 36 of them in the Top 40. Bray - Alan Jones was not refering to the Top 40, as regards 'Make You Feel My Love' - he was counting the entire Top 75. However - I get a different result than him. I can't get 13 'changes in direction' for it. Alan Jones says that 'Make You Feel My Love' has changed direction, (climbed), 13 times since it re-entered at No.4, 21 Weeks ago. However - I can 'only' get 11 such climbs for it, & I've checked over & over. Note - both I & Alan count the Entry Position as a Climb, IF it is also the Peak Position. (Assuming that Alan counts the Entry Position, too). OR - is he counting when it falls/drops as a 'change in direction', too? Does anyone get 13 'changes' for it, counting its rises and falls? Alan says:, "Adele’s phenomenal achievements on the singles and albums charts this week are discussed more fully in our album analysis piece. Meanwhile, her 2008 single Make You Feel My Love rallies again, climbing 25-24 (15,518 sales). It’s the 13th time it has changed direction since it re-entered the chart 21 weeks ago – a record." And, here are its Chart Positions, for the past 21 Weeks:, W/E 9th October 2010 - 4-11-20-17-27-19-9-12-9-21-31-26-33-31-27-7-19-15-23-25-24 You DO get 13 Top 75 Climbs if you count its 2 previous Chart Entries, too:, W/E 1st November 2008 - 63-26-29-45-74 W/E 11th September 2010 - 24-44

ADELE - AN ALL TIME UK CHART RECORD Adele has 2 Top 5 Hits in the W/E 26th February UK Singles & Albums Charts. She is only the 4th Act to achieve it, in the same Week. She also becomes the 1st Female, (any Genre/Type of Act), to achieve it. She is the first living Act to achieve the Feat since The Beatles, in January 1964. She also becomes the first Act since February 1981 to manage it. John Lennon achieved it then - due to the rise in his Sales, due to his Death. NOTE - She is also at No.1 in the Singles & Albums Charts - as well as having another Top 5 Hit in them. She becomes only the 3rd Act to manage that - The Beatles, & John Lennon being the only others. (With Lennon in both of those Acts, of course). The other 3 Acts (2 Top 5 Singles & Albums in the same Week):, THE SHADOWS W/E 31st January 1963 SINGLES No.2 - 'The Next Time/Bachelor Boy' (With Cliff Richard) No.4 - 'Dance On!' All those who accuse Lady GaGa of:, 'Ripping off Madonna's 'Express Yourself', have a HUGE flaw in their argument. That 1989 Madonna Hit actually sampled - and was heavily influenced by - 'Respect Yourself', a 1971 USA No.12 Hit for the Staples Singers. So, the 1989 Madonna Hit was no more 'original', than the sounds in Lady GaGa's Hit! I don't think that the New Lady GaGa Single is her best, but, there will be better things on her Album. There will be 3 or 4 more Singles from it.

Suedehead2 - Eva Cassidy is the most successful Act, to have had their entire UK Chart Career, after their death. However - several other Artists have had more Top 10 Hits, since they died. I've only counted Solo Artists - which is why I've not included Queen's Hits, since 24th November 1991 - when Freddie Mercury died. Jim Reeves - Although he first entered the UK Album Chart on W/E 28th March 1964, he did not have his first Top 10 Album until after his 31st July 1964 death. So - he had all of his 14 Top 10 Albums, after he died. By having the No.1 & No.4 Albums for 2 Weeks, Adele becomes the first Solo Female to achieve 2 simultaneous UK Top 5 Albums, for more than a Week. She is also only the 2nd Solo Female to achieve 2 UK Top 5 Albums, at the same time. It took from 1956 to 2010 to see the first, & 1956 to 2011 to see Adele's achievement. A Thread for 'Nerds' eh? SKOB - Jean Michel Jarre is the French Artist with the most Top 10 Albums - 5. Air, & Daft Punk have had 3 each. As far as I can see, no French Artist has ever had a UK No.1 Album. Although Celine Dion is French Canadian, & has had 10 Top 10 Albums. 5 of them were No.1 Hits, & 'D'eux', (No.7/1995), was entirely in French. Most likely the only French Language Album, to ever reach the UK Top 10.

Bray - I was just pointing out that the Adele Single is on its 3rd Chart 'Run'. It makes no difference to the fact that it has become one of only 3 Singles to reach the Top 10 as many as 4 times in the same Chart 'Run'. The only difference is that the other 2 did it in their 1st 'Run', & Adele has done it in her 3rd. She still joins the other 2 Hits, in achieving the 'Chart Feat'.

Suedehead2 - With regards to what you've said, about the only 3 Hit Singles, to reach the Top 10 as many as 4 times in 1 Chart Run - here are their Chart Runs:, (Release Year in Brackets) 1) 'Stranger On The Shore' - Mr. Acker Bilk (1961) 30th November 1961 - 32-16-14-6-6-(1962)-8-2-2-2-5-8-7-12-11-13-8-8-7-6-7-13-12-10-15-13-12 11-12-11-11-9-9-17-19-18-20-19-18-22-23-27-30-32-31-38-47-39-35-40-33-31-45-39-43-37 2) 'Something About The Way You Look Tonight/Candle In The Wind 1997' - Elton John (1997) 20th September 1997 - 1-1-1-1-1-3-3-4-5-7-11-10-11-10-11-10-13-21-32-39-53-64-60-67 3) 'Make You Feel My Love' - Adele (2008) 9th October 2010 - 4-11-20-17-27-19-9-12-9-21-31-26-33-31-27-7 The Adele Single is actually on its 3rd Chart 'Run'. Bray - It is very unusual, (as you know), for any Hit to reach the Top 10, as many as 4 times, in the same 'Chart Run'. (Whether it was within 16 Weeks or not). It may have happened in the 1950's - I''m not sure - but, the Elton John Single, & Adele's, (if she achieve's it), may well be the only 2 cases of it happening. At least since the 1950's - if it happened then. Can anyone give any other examples?

Jackph89 - You cannot buy the Calendar. I've seen it. Hence why I Posted Lists from it. Also from The OCC's 2011 Calendar, another UK Sales List:, TOP SELLING CHRISTMAS TIME HITS 1) Do They Know It's Christmas? - Band Aid (1984) 2) Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen (1975 & 1991) 3) Mull Of Kintyre/Girls School - Wings (1977) 4) Mary's Boy Child - Oh My Lord - Boney M (1978) 5) I Want To Hold Your Hand - The Beatles (1963) 6) Last Christmas/Everything She Wants - Wham! (1984) 7) Don't You Want Me - Human League (1981) 8) I Will Always Love You - Whitney Houston (1992) 9) I Feel Fine - The Beatles (1964) 10) We Can Work It Out/Day Tripper - The Beatles (1965)
  13. DanChartFan - Yes 'Je Taime' does have its Chart 'Runs' on its 2 Labels confused, in the 'Top 40 Book'. The old Guinness Top 40 Book got it right. (The OCC & Virgin are aware of the mistake).
  14. zeus555 posted a post in a topic in UK Charts
Bray - Queen get 8 Weeks from the 4 times that they had the UK 'Double Top'. Each 'Run' is counted as 1 'Double Top' - the Total Weeks of each 'Run' are a different thing. (My List shows both sets of figures - 'Runs' and individual Weeks). I know of no-one who regards each Week that an Act Topped both Charts as a separate 'Double Top' - otherwise we'd be saying that The Beatles had 45 Double Chart Toppers - when it is actually 14 'Runs', (or 15) - for 45 Weeks. It is the 'Runs' that matter the most - and the old Guinness Books counted it that way too..... SKOB - Of course, The OCC are aware that some Groups have had 5, (or more), consecutive Years of UK No.1 Singles. The Beatles, (for example) - 7 Years, from 1963 to 1969. But, the statistic, about Rihanna achieving it, was about 'Solo' Artists. That is why only Elvis Presley, was mentioned besides Rihanna. Cliff Richard - We could say that he had 5 Years of No.1 Hits, in a row. 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, & 1963. All of those No.1's were with The Shadows. (Called The Drifters on 'Living Doll' - 1959). (His 1961 No.1 was 'I Love You', which was No.1 in December 1960, & in January 1961 - which makes it a No.1 in both Years). If Cliff is not being counted because he & The Shadows are counted as a 'Group', then surely Rihanna's 2009 No.1 was by a 'Group' - 'Run This Town', Jay-Z Feat. Rihanna & Kanye West? Which means that she's not had 5 Years of No.1's as a Solo Artist? And was she really 'Solo' on 'Umbrella', in 2007, when Jay-Z was credited too? Is she really 'Solo' on 'What's My Name?', when Drake is credited too?
  15. zeus555 posted a post in a topic in UK Charts
Bray - the 'Double Chart Topper' Feat is about achieving that Feat. It does not matter if the Single or the Album is the same for the achievement. The only 'Rule' is that an Artist has to have the No.1 Single & Album at the same time. It is not easy to Top both Charts at once. Queen did it 4 times, & 2 of those times were with the same Single AND Album. In late 1975 they had the 'Double Top' for 2 Weeks with 'Bohemian Rhapsody' & 'A Night At The Opera'. In January 1976 they were both No.1 at the same time for 2 more Weeks. That is TWO Double Chart Toppers. The fact that they are with the same Single & Album does not matter. Just as when Lady GaGa achieved it in both 2009 & 2010 - & 'The Fame' was the Album each time, it still counts as her having 2 Double Chart Toppers. It is the achievement that counts - not the actual Single or Album.
  16. zeus555 posted a post in a topic in UK Charts
As The OCC have said - Rihanna is only the 2nd Solo Act to have UK No.1 Singles in 5 consecutive Years. The other Solo Act - Elvis Presley - did it for 7 consecutive Years - 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, & 1963. Madonna would likely have achieved it had she not taken 1988 'off'. She had No.1 Singles in 1985, 1986, 1987, & 1989.
  17. zeus555 posted a post in a topic in UK Charts
By being No.1 in the Singles & Albums Chart, this Week, Rihanna joins the few Acts who have achieved it more than once - and becomes only the 3rd 'Solo' Female to do so more than once. She was also No.1 in both Charts on the W/E 16th June 2007. In the Singles Chart with 'Umbrella' (Feat. Jay-Z), & in the Album Chart with 'Good Girl Gone Bad'. The last 5 times that it has been achieved have all been by 'Solo' Females - Lily Allen, (2009), Lady GaGa, (2009), Cheryl Cole, (2009), Lady GaGa, again, (2010), & now Rihanna. THE 19 ACTS WHO HAVE ACHIEVED THE FEAT MORE THAN ONCE 1) THE BEATLES - 14 OR 15 TIMES - 45 WEEKS * 2)=ELVIS PRESLEY - 7 TIMES - 22 WEEKS 2)=THE SHADOWS - 7 TIMES - 13 WEEKS ** 4)=ABBA - 4 TIMES - 13 WEEKS 4)=CLIFF RICHARD - 4 TIMES - 11 WEEKS 4)=QUEEN - 4 TIMES - 8 WEEKS 4)=MADONNA - 4 TIMES - 8 WEEKS *** 8)=ROLLING STONES - 3 TIMES - 5 WEEKS 8)=THE POLICE - 3 TIMES - 4 WEEKS 10)=ROD STEWART - 2 TIMES - 7 WEEKS 10)=T. REX - 2 TIMES - 5 WEEKS 10)=GARY NUMAN - 2 TIMES - 2 WEEKS 10)=MICHAEL JACKSON - 2 TIMES - 2 WEEKS 10)=WET WET WET - 2 TIMES - 7 WEEKS 10)=MEATLOAF - 2 TIMES - 5 WEEKS 10)=SPICE GIRLS - 2 TIMES - 5 WEEKS 10)=SUGABABES - 2 TIMES - 2 WEEKS 10)=LADY GAGA - 2 TIMES - 2 WEEKS 10)=RIHANNA - 2 TIMES - 2 WEEKS(?) * = The Beatles could said be to have managed it 15 times. This is because when ‘She Loves You’ returned to No.1 on 28th November 1963, it was No.1 for 2 Weeks - but 2 different Beatles Albums were No.1 at the same time - ‘Please Please Me’ on 28th November, & ‘With The Beatles’ on 5th December. It is up to YOU whether you count that as 2 Beatles ‘Double Chart Toppers‘, or if you count it as just 1. ** = 2 Times as The Shadows, & 5 Times co-credited with Cliff Richard. *** = It was not achieved by a Solo Female Act until W/E 8th November 1980 - Barbra Streisand. Madonna, Lady GaGa, & Rihanna, are the ONLY Solo Female Acts to achieve it MORE than TWICE. (Madonna - 1986, 1989, 2005, & 2008. Lady GaGa - 2009 & 2010. Rihanna - 2007, & 2011). Besides Madonna - Agnetha & Frida, of ABBA, are the only other Female Singers to manage it more than twice - in 1976, 1977, 1978, & 1980. The 5 Spice Girls, (1996 & 1997), & 3 Sugababes, (2005 & 2007), are the only other Women to achieve it more than once.

The Calendar also has the Top 10 Best Selling Singles - but that never changes. Plus the Top 10 DVD's, (all types), but I did not think that List belonged here. Plus the Top 10 Christmas Period Selling Singles in the UK - but, I was not sure if anyone would be interested in that one. (It is the Top Sellers DURING Christmas/New Year - which is not the same as a Top 10 Christmas Singles - as in Hits that have a 'Theme' of Christmas in them. Although several of the Top 10 Christmas period Hits are of that type). If anyone would like me to add the other 3 Lists - or some of them - just let me know.

  23. Whilst only '1' by The Beatles is certified for 2 Million+ UK Sales, they have sold over 5 Million UK copies of 'Sgt Pepper', & about 2 Million copies of 'Abbey Road'. Take That are huge in the UK, (& Ireland), but there is no-where near as much fuss over them elsewhere. 'Progress' has just been their 3rd German No.1 Album, but that is not that impressive, when The Beatles had about 11 there. There are certainly no gigantic Weekly Sales for 'Progress' outside the UK. I'm an ABBA Fan, but they 'only' had 2 UK Albums that sold over 2 Million, & neither were Studio Albums - 'Greatest Hits', (1976 - about 2,700,000), & 'Gold', (1992 - about 4,850,000, to date). 'Arrival' sold less than 1,700,000 in the UK, & 'The Album' sold about 1,100,000.
  24. Thanks for the Commentary, Suedehead2 - Merry Christmas. If anyone can add to what I'm adding next, then please do so. Likewise, if anyone spots any errors in it - Thanks. THE TRASHMEN - 'SURFIN' BIRD' (THE OLDEST RECORDING TO REACH TOP 10?) So, 'Surfin' Bird', by The Trashmen, is at No.3. (It was also a No.50 UK Hit, in the W/E 2nd May 2009 Chart). It was originally a No.4 USA Hit, in 1963. So, the Recording is 47 Years old. I believe that it is the oldest Recording to reach the UK Top 10. (Ever). BUT - NOT THE OLDEST SONG TO REACH THE TOP 10! The oldest Song, to reach the UK Top 10, was 'Silent Night', which Bros, took to No.2, in the W/E 3rd December 1988 Chart. (As a Double 'A' Side, with 'Cat Among The Pigeons'). It did this in the Top 10:, 2-4-5-6-8-10 The Lyrics for 'Silent Night', were originally written, in 1816, by Austrian Priest, Father Joseph Mohr. In December 1818, he asked Austrian Headmaster, Franz Xaver Gruber, to compose the Melody for it. It was first performed that very Christmas. Of course, it was originally written in German - 'Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht''. ('Silent Night, Holy Night'). In 1859, John Freeman Young, published the English translation. He was a Bishop, in Florida, USA. So, the Melody is from 1818, & the English Lyrics are from 1859. Therefore - when Bros had a Top 10 Hit with it, in 1988, it was 170 Years old, as a Melody, & 129 Years old as an English Song. It was probably the oldest Song, to reach the UK Top 10, in December 1952, when Bing Crosby took it to No.8. The UK Singles Chart was less than 2 Months old at the time. The Song was already 134 Years old, (Melody), & 93 Years old, (English version), when Bing reached No.8, with it.....(W/E December 20th 1952) TOP 10 HITS BASED ON CLASSICAL MUSIC BUT - I know very little about Classical Music, & there may well be Top 10 Hits that utilise parts of the Melody of Classical 'pieces'. I heard that 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale', by Procol Harum, did that. (No.1 - 1967). But, I've checked. Whilst parts of the Melody were 'inspired', by 'Sleepers Wake', (Johann Sebastian Bach - 1731) - it did not actually 'pinch' his Melody. 'A LOVER'S CONCERTO' - THE TOYS (1965) I see that this 1965 UK No.5 Hit, by USA Girl Group, The Toys, was based on a very old Melody. (It was also a No.2 Hit in the USA). The Melody in this Hit was based on 'Minuet In G Major', which is a 1725 'piece', by Johann Sebastian Bach. So, its Melody was 240 Years old, when The Toys had a Hit with, 'A Lovers Concerto', in 1965. 'Surfin' Bird' is really based on 2 Songs, by USA Group, The Rivington's - 'Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow', (1962), & 'Bird Is The Word', (1963). The Rivington's seem to have had about as much imagination as Simon Cowell. One of their subsequent Singles was, 'Mama-Oom-Mow-Mow'! (Doh!).
