X Factor's Farcical Sales Claims
If we are going to add Gary, Robbie's, & Take That's No.1 Singles together, then we may as well do it for Albums too. So, 'Progress' will be the 16th No.1 Album, connected with them - not the 15th. Gary has had 1, (1997), Robbie has had 9, & Take That will have their 6th, on Sunday. But, where does it end, if we add an 'Act's' No.1's, together like that? The Beatles - 17 No.1 Singles, Paul McCartney/Wings - 4 No.1 Singles, John Lennon - 3 No.1 Singles, George Harrison - 1 No.1 Single, (or 2, if you count the 2nd time that 'My Sweet Lord' went to No.1, (2002), as a 2nd No.1 for him). That's 25, (or 26), No.1 Singles, for The Beatles. The Beatles - 15 No.1 Albums, Paul McCartney/Wings - 7 No.1 Albums, John Lennon - 3 No.1 Albums, & George Harrison - 2 No.1 Albums, ('Concert For Bangladesh' (1972), is credited as George Harrison & Friends). That gives The Beatles 27 No.1 Albums.

#1s Which Spent 3 or Less Weeks in the Top-10 (Singles)
Ironically, Take That's best performing UK Hit, (longest in the Chart), never got to No.1. It is 'Rule The World' - a No.2 Hit, & 72 Weeks in the Top 75.

X Factor's Farcical Sales Claims
Pop B!tch - Coldplay have had 4 No.1 Albums in the UK, not 3. 3 of the Coldplay No.1's sold well over 2 Million in the UK. By the end of 2008, these 3 had sold:, 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head' - 2,690,000 (3 Weeks at No.1) (2002) 'X & Y' - 2,540,000 (4 Weeks at No.1) (2005) 'Parachutes' - 2,435,000 (1 Week at No.1) (2000) 2008's 'Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends', did not sell nearly so well, but it was No.1 for 6 Weeks. Westlife have not sold UK Albums at nearly the same rate. By the end of 2008, their 2 UK Best Selling Albums were:, 'Coast To Coast' - 1,680,000 (1 Week at No.1) (2000) 'Unbreakable - The Greatest Hits - Vol 1' - 1,645,000 (1 Week at No.1) (2002) Yes, they have had 7 UK No.1 Albums, & not one of them could manage more than a Week at No.1. Just as 10 of their 14 No.1 Singles could only remain at No.1 for 1 Week.

007 Chart Commentary - 14th Nov 2010
Because Rihanna held on to the No.1 Singles Position, I've created these 2 Lists:, FEMALE ‘SOLO’ ARTISTS - MOST WEEKS AT No.1 IN THE UK SINGLES CHART 1) MADONNA - 29 (4 Weeks with Justin Timberlake) 2) OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN - 18 (16 Wks, with John Travolta, & 2 Wks with E.L.O.) 3)=WHITNEY HOUSTON - 16 3)=KYLIE MINOGUE - 16 (3 Weeks with Jason Donovan) 5)=DORIS DAY - 15 5)=RIHANNA - 15 (10 Weeks with Jay-Z, & 1 Week with Jay-Z & Kanye West) 7)=CHER - 13 (1 Week with Chrissie Hynde, Neneh Cherry, & Eric Clapton) 7)=LEONA LEWIS - 13 9) CONNIE FRANCIS - 12 10)=BEYONCE - 10 (1 Wk with Jay-Z, 3 Wks with Shakira, & 2 Wks with Lady Gaga) 10)=LADY GAGA - 10 (3 Weeks with Colby O’Donis, & 2 Weeks with Beyonce) NOTE Olivia Newton-John, Cher, & Leona Lewis, have had 3 No.1 Singles Doris Day, & Connie Francis, have had 2 No.1 Singles Cher also had 2 No.1 Weeks with 'I Got You Babe', in 1965. However, her Sonny & Cher Hits are not usually added to her Cher Hits - so that's why she has 13 No.1 Weeks, & not 15. FEMALE ‘SOLO’ ARTISTS - MOST No.1’s IN THE UK SINGLES CHART 1) MADONNA - 13 (1 with Justin Timberlake) 2) KYLIE MINOGUE - 7 (1 with Jason Donovan 3)=BRITNEY SPEARS - 5 3)=BEYONCE - 5 (1 with Jay-Z, 1 with Shakira, 1 with Lady Gaga) 5)=WHITNEY HOUSTON - 4 5)=CHRISTINA AGUILERA - 4 (1 with Lil’ Kim, Mya, & Pink, 1 with Redman) 5)=GERI HALLIWELL - 4 5)=LADY GAGA - 4 (1 with Colby O’Donis, 1 with Beyonce) 5)=RIHANNA - 4 (1 with Jaz-Z, 1 with Jay-Z & Kanye West) NOTE Cher would have 4 No.1's too, if we include 'I Got You Babe' (1965) Christina Aguilera has spent 7 Weeks at No.1 Britney Spears has spent 6 Weeks at No.1 Geri Halliwell has spent 5 Weeks at No.1 CHER - I try to make my Data match the 'Rules' that they use in UK Chart Books. So far, no UK Chart Book adds Sonny & Cher's Chart Hits, & Feats, to those of Cher. I think they should. However, until they do so, I do not include them with Cher's Hits.

At last, I'm impressed with a Westlife 'Feat!' For an IRISH Act to achieve that - well, it is absolutely incredible! :P

Suedehead2 - I too would count 'I Got You Babe' as a Cher No.1. However, I try to match my Data with that in UK Chart Books, & none of them add Sonny & Cher's Hit Singles, & Albums, to Cher's Hits.

Up-Dated UK Million Sellers - On BBC Radio 2
One of my OCC Contacts, told me that 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina' had reached a UK Million, for Julie Covington. That it had also reached the Million before Alexandra Burke's 1st Hit. (We discussed the matter on the 'phone, & he checked this matter as we spoke - he checked on his Computer). After all - the Julie Covington Hit, only needed to sell 7,000 on Downloads, to reach 1 Million UK Sales. It wasn't hard for her to manage it - as Downloads were first counted in September 2004 - over 6 Years ago. (According to the latest 'Hit Singles' Book, anyhow - which has a List of the Top 50 Catalogue Singles, that were released before September 2004. It says that The OCC 'launched' their Download Chart then). I'm not surprised that Alexandra's Fans would rather believe the Myth, that she was the 1st UK Solo Female to have a Million Selling Single. Fans of an Act never, ever want Myths, (that show the Feats of that Act), to be challenged. They'd rather believe a cosy Myth, than an unpalatable truth. I'll see if I can get The OCC to put the real facts on their Site.

007 Chart Commentary - 7th Nov 2010
It is unlikely that the Bon Jovi Album will get higher than its current No.2 Position. Therefore, they become the first Act, to have had more than 3 consecutive No.2 Albums, in the UK. Until this Week they were one of the 7 Acts who'd had 3 UK No.2 Albums in a row. MOST CONSECUTIVE UK NUMBER 2 ALBUMS (To W/E 13th November 2010) 4 No.2 Albums in a row BON JOVI (2005 - 2010) 3 No.2 Albums in a row 1) CLIFF RICHARD (1959 - 1961) 2) SHADOWS (All 3 with Cliff Richard) (1959 - 1961) 3) JAM (1982 - 1991) 4) PET SHOP BOYS (1987 - 1990) 5) A-HA (1985 - 1988) *** 6) SHERYL CROW (1998 - 2003) *** *** = THE ONLY ACTS IN THE LIST NEVER TO HAVE HAD A NO.1 ALBUM JON BON JOVI - He's actually now had 8 No.2 Albums - 6 in Bon Jovi, & 2 Solo. CHERYL COLE - And she becomes the 1st Female Artist to have had more than 1 No.1 Album in a Group, & then to have managed 2 Solo No.1 Albums. She had 2 No.1 Albums in Girls Aloud, & now has her 2nd Solo No.1 Album. Annie Lennox had 3 No.1 Albums in The Eurythmics, & 2 Solo No.1's - but, The Eurythmics were a Duo, not a Group. Alison Moyet had 1 No.1 Album in Yazoo, & 2 Solo No.1 Albums - but, Yazoo were a Duo, not a Group. Diana Ross had 3 No.1 Albums with The Supremes, (1 of them had The Temptations on it, too), but, she's only ever had 1 No.1 Solo Album - 'One Woman - The Ultimate Collection' - No.1 in 1994.

The Suedehead Chart Commentary
SKOB - I have used Cheryl's Girls Aloud Hits, to do 2 sets of Chart Statistics, in the past 2 Weeks. Last Week's was pointing out that Cheryl has now 'Sung' on 26 Top 10 Singles - 20 in Girls Aloud, 1 in Helping Haiti, & 5 since she left the Group. However - in a Chart Book - I would not put her Girls Aloud, or Helping Haiti Singles, in the Cheryl Cole Section. But - when I work out 'Which Acts have sung on the most Top 10 Hits', (or 'The most No.1 Hits' etc.), I do include ALL of Cheryl's Top 10/No.1 etc. Hits. That's because such Lists need me to count them all. The same for any other Chart Act. 2 of my Lists are:, 'The Acts Who Have Been On The Most No.1 Singles', & 'The Acts Who Have Been On The Most No.1 Albums'. Those 2 Lists, (which I up-date every few Months), require me to look at ALL the No.1's that an Artist has been on - including Charity Records - like Band Aid etc. But - in a Chart Book, I would not put all of each Acts No.1's in their Section. (For example - I would not put Robbie's No.1's/Hits in the Take That Section - nor Take That's No.1's/Hits, in the Robbie Section). As for Hits that 'Feature' etc. other Acts. As long as the Acts are named, those Hits should go to each of the Acts on them. So, 'Love The Way You Lie', would go in both the Eminem, & Rihanna Sections, in Chart Books. Band Aid etc. is different - the Acts are credited under a Group name - so it should only go in the Band Aid Section. I only count all of an Acts Hits & No.1's etc., if my List requires it. It does not mean that I'd do the same thing in Chart Books. The 2 matters are entirely different, & do not require me to follow the same 'Rules.

The Suedehead Chart Commentary
No - I don't see any reason to count Duo's as Groups. For example, if 2 people were protesting outside a Court, or whatever, & they were mentioned on the TV News, I cannot see them being referred to as a 'Group of people'. A 'Couple of people', or '2 people' - yes. But, not a Group. I never see 2 people as a Group. Anyhow - even if I did regard a Duo as a Group, Cheryl Cole still gains a Chart Feat. She would then become the first Female from an all Female Group, who had No.1 Albums in the Group, & then had 2 Solo No.1 Albums. (Neither Annie Lennox, nor Alison Moyet can claim that - for The Eurythmics, & Yazoo were Male/Female Duo's/Groups).

Virgin Book of British Hit Singles 2010
There was a 2009 'Hit Albums' Book. It is far better than the 2008 'Hit Singles' Book. There will be a 2011 'Hit Albums' Book - IF the 2010 'Hit Singles' Book has decent Sales. (So, it is in 'Chart Fans' hands really - as to whether we get future Singles & Albums Books).
-
Virgin Book of British Hit Singles 2010
Suedehead2 - As far as I know, (& can see), the 2010 Book has corrected the mistakes that were in the 2008 Book. Bray - like the old Guinness Books, the 2010 Book uses the 'New Musical Express' Charts for the first Years of the Singles Chart. (November 1952 to March 1960). It is interesting that in 1953 - the first full Year of the Singles Chart - Frankie Laine spent 27 Weeks at No.1, & no-one has managed to equal, (or beat), that since. There would be photos & colour in the Book, if The OCC, & Virgin, could be sure that 'Chart Fans' would pay the higher price that this would cause these Books to rise to. They worry that we'd refuse to buy the Books, if they were more costly to buy, due to being more cosmetically attractive. Basically, the Books would have to be about £20 each, (with no discounts), & they truly worry that hardly any of us would pay that. Hence why there is no colour in the Books, (exept on the Cover), & why there are no photos. It is worth buying the 2010 Book, as I truly think that The Internet will cause Chart Books to die out, in the end - and the old Chart Books will end up being so rare - & hard to find - that people will be selling old copies for about £140 by 2020, or so! :o (Although I realise that this does not happen with all old Chart Books).

1) The Book goes up to, (& including), the Chart of Week Ending 10th April 2010. 2) There are 'Mini Biogs' of several Acts, too. There is much to read in it. I'm sure that it will be in the Stores very soon.

Virgin Book of British Hit Singles 2010
I studied the Book last night, & I found it fascinating. These are the Lists in the Book:, 1) Acts With The Most Weeks At No.1 2) Top 50 Downloads Of All Time (Based on UK Sales) 3) Acts With the Most Top 40 Hits 4) Top 100 Singles Of All Time (Based on UK Sales) 5) Singles That Have Spent The Most Weeks At No.1 6) Acts With The Most Top 10 Hits 7) Top Acts By Weeks On Chart 8) Top 50 Catalogue Downloads (Singles from before September 2004) 9) Top 40 Acts By Singles Sales 10) Top 40 Acts By Download Sales 11) Singles That Have Spent The Most Weeks On Chart 12) Acts With The Most No.1's A) Top 5 Downloads By UK Sales 2004 B) Top 5 Downloads By UK Sales 2005 C) Top 5 Downloads By UK Sales 2006 D) Top 5 Downloads By UK Sales 2007 E) Top 5 Downloads By UK Sales 2008 F) Top 5 Downloads By UK Sales 2009 @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ Several of the Lists have actual Sales figures shown. Also - some of the biggest Acts have their Top 3 Singles shown, with their Sales revealed. PLUS - There is a Section on the 1960 to 1967 EP Chart - showing all the Acts who had Hit EP's, & their Peaks Positions, & Chart Weeks. As well as the Weeks at No.1 of the EP's that reached that Position. (There is an Index for the EP's too). And - unlike the 2008 'Hit Singles' Book - this one is based on the Top 75, (NOT the Top 40). And all the No.1 Singles are Listed - as well as Symbols to show the Hits that went Silver, Gold, or Platinum. With USA No.1 Hits indicated by a Star Symbol. I think that the Book is excellent, & that it is worth having for every 'Chart Fan'. A welcome addition to our Chart Book collections. THE DOWNLOAD ERA - EFFECT ON UK SINGLES CHART Looking at the Entries, for numerous 21st Century Acts, you can see how Downloads enable many Singles to stay in the Chart for far longer than they used to. For example, ABBA had 28 Singles Entries, in the UK, but only 'Dancing Queen' managed 20 Weeks on Chart. Lady GaGa first Charted in January 2009, & 6 of hers have managed over 20 Weeks, with 5 of those Charting for over 35 Weeks. (In fact, 3 of them were on the Chart for over 40 Weeks). And Take That had 16 Hits from 1991 to 1996, with none spending more than 15 Weeks on Chart. Since their 2006 'Reunion', the Download Era has caused 4 of their 'Comeback' Hits to spend over 20 Weeks on Chart. 3 of them have been on the Chart for 154 Weeks between them - 'Patience', (40 Weeks), 'Shine', (42 Weeks), & 'Rule The World', (72 Weeks). So, we will see more & more Acts, (who have Hits in the 'Download Era'), spending longer on the Charts than Acts from previous Decades. And doing so quite fast too - for their Singles do not need to be in the Shops to remain on the Charts.

Virgin Book of British Hit Singles 2010
Suedehead2 - My copy arrived, (from Amazon.uk), this afternoon - Thursday 4th November. I'm sure that the Stores will get it in very soon. I'll be looking at the Book tonight, & I'll 'Review' it, tomorrow. It has far, far more detail, & Lists, in it than the 2008 Edition. It is easy to see that, simply by looking at the Contents, as well as looking at some of the Lists in it. It is well worth buying. :D

007 Chart Commentary - 31st Oct 2010
I believe that Leon Russell is the only Act, who has had to wait more than 39 Years for a 2nd Week in the Album Chart. But, he's NOT the Act with the longest gap between a 1st & 2nd Hit Album. Judy Garland is. 'Judy At Carnegie Hall' was a No.13 Album, in March 1962. It spent its 3rd, (& final), Week on Chart on W/E 17th March 1962 - at No.20. She did not have a 2nd Hit Album until W/E 24th April 2010, when 'Over The Rainbow - The Very Best Of Judy Garland' - reached No.66 - spending just 1 Week on the Chart. A gap of just over 48 Years, between her 1st & 2nd Hit Albums. (And her 3rd & 4th Chart Weeks). The Male Act with the longest gap between Hit Albums is Del Shannon. (I believe). He reached No.9, with 'Hats Off To Del Shannon', in June 1963. He then had a 2nd Hit Album, in November 1963 - 'Little Town Flirt'. It reached No.15, & spent its final Week on the Chart, (No.16), on W/E 30th November 1963. He didn't have another Hit Album until THIS Year - when 'Runaway - The Very Best Of Del Shannon', entered, & Peaked, at No.25, in the W/E 6th February Chart. A gap of over 46 Years, between his 2nd & 3rd Hit Albums. If Mel Torme ever has a 2nd Hit Album, he will take those Chart Feats from Judy Garland, & Del Shannon. He had 2 No.3 Albums, in 1956. The 2nd of which left the Chart in September 1956. He's not been in the Album Chart since. Freddy Cannon had a No.1 Album in 1960. 'The Explosive Freddy Cannon' - Freddy Cannon - No.1 in March 1960. He's yet to have a 2nd Hit Album! So, he will also have the:, 'Biggest Gap Between Hit Albums', if he ever has another Hit. (As well as having the biggest gap between a 1st Hit Album & a 2nd).

Dannyboy - If you do a similar List for No.1 Albums, it is best to leave out Film Soundtracks. This is because in the 1950's, & early 1960's, they so dominated the Charts, that the 3 Albums with the most Weeks at No.1, are all Soundtracks, even to this day:, 1) 'South Pacific' - 115 Weeks at No.1 (1958) 2) 'The Sound Of Music' - 70 Weeks at No.1 (1965) 3) 'The King & I' - 48 Weeks at No.1 (1956) To stop such Albums dominating my Lists, I leave them out - but say where they would have been, had I included them. (That goes for all Various Artist Film Soundtracks - 'Westside Story', 'Saturday Night Fever', & 'Grease' etc.). 'Evita' is usually regarded as a Madonna & Various Artists, Soundtrack, so I count that one. I add it to her No.1 Albums too - for that is what The OCC, & UK Chart Books do.
