Top 500 Number 1 Singles (based on chart runs)
Dannyboy - at no time did I say that I do not find your Lists interesting. I said that such Lists are 'fun'. I did say that they do not work as regards gauging the most popular Acts or Hits. I do my own Lists. I do mine for Fun. But, mine gauge things like the Acts with the most No.1 Weeks, Top 5 Weeks, Top 10 Weeks, & so on - in Chart History. You get a better idea of success that way, than making Lists of individual Hits. You - obviously - put a lot of work into your Lists. They are interesting - I never said that they are not. Have you thought of working out the No.1 & No.2 Albums on the same basis? That would be interesting too.

Top 500 Number 1 Singles (based on chart runs)
It is silly to base who is the 'Biggest Act' on such Lists. Downloads make sure that many Hits hang around for ages & ages, these days. (Lady GaGa is just a big Act in the Download Era - The Beatles, ABBA, Queen, Bee Gees etc. would have been in the Singles Charts for far longer, had they had Downloads to assist them). Old Hits had to depend on actually being available in the Shops. Downloads are there 24/7 - 365 Days a Year - no wonder so many 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 etc. Hits are in the Charts for Months & Months. We may as well say that 'I Believe', by Frankie Laine, was the biggest UK No.1 ever - 18 Weeks at No.1, 36 Top 10 Weeks - both more than any other UK No.1. But, it had low Sales, as Singles Sales were low in 1953. Downloads also distort what is biggest in UK Chart History. It is OK for 'fun', to compile these Lists - but, we will find that more & more Hits from this 'Era' fill the Lists, until only a minority of pre-2006 No.1's will get a look in, when Points are added up. This is already happening.

Westlife - Gravity [& New Single Safe]
Westlife never progress. They do the same sort of music with almost every Single. Even many of their old Fans are fed up now - the days of guaranteed No.1 Singles & Albums are over - for Westlife. The people who get excited over them seem to think that being bland, same old same old, & predictable, makes Westlife 'fantastic'. Most people see nothing much there. They are sort of Val(ium) Doonican Tribute Group. They will never, ever be respected by the Music Industry. There is nothing much to respect. Their 2 biggest UK Singles were Covers, ('I Have A Dream', & 'Uptown Girl'). 10 of their 14 UK No.1 Singles could only remain at No.1 for 1 Week. They've had 7 UK No.1 Albums, & none spent more than 1 Week at No.1. So - lots of No.1's, but they did not really 'Dominate' the Charts at all - as in holding off other big Acts, from the No.1 spot - by staying there for 3, 4, or 5 Weeks - often. Their UK Chart Statistics are not that impressive, when they are actually looked at in that way.

After all - Cliff Richard gets 3 Cliff Richard & The Shadows Albums added to his 'Solo' Total. (I've not added in 'Venus & Mars' (1975), for that No.1 Album was just credited to Wings).

A Silence at number 1 for Christmas 2010
IF - this 'campaign' succeeds, it will be 100% pointless. DJ's etc. will not play the 'silent track' on the Radio. Nor will it even be played if it were at No.1. Instead, the Christmas Chart will stop when the No.2 Hit is played. The No.1 will be mentioned - but, then 100% ignored. So, it may as well not be No.1 at all. If an 'X Factor' Track is at No.2 - then that will be the final Hit played in the Christmas Chart - which means it is being treated as if it were at No.1. So, the entire idea of a 'silent track' at No.1 is 100% stupid, pointless, & only a reflection on how dumb the people are who thought of the idea. And I say that as someone who hates 'X Factor. But, I hate this idea even more. Instead, it would be better to get a Christmas Single to No.1 that has never been there before. Say 'White Christmas', by Bing Crosby', or 'Fairy Tale Of New York', by The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl. I loathe the 'X Factor', but I also loathe prople who think that it is clever to campaign for Heavy Rock, (2009), or Silence, (2010), to be No.1 at Christmas.....

The Almost Saturday Charts w/k ending 22nd Oct 2010
I doubt very much if the JLS Single will beat the Take That Single to No.1. The Take That Track is far stronger. The JLS one - heard such ballads a million times before. We will see, anyhow.

X Factor Finalists 2010 - Heroes
It will be No.1, due to the hype. However, it shows that Cowell has Zero imagination. In 2008, he chose Mariah Carey's 'Hero' as the Help4Heroes Charity Single. This time, it is Bowie's 'Heroes' - for the same Charity. Gordon 'Misnomer' Smart, in 'The Sun', says that 'Paper will be backing the Single all the way. If Cowell backs the same Charity in 2011, will he pick 'Holding Out For A Hero', or Enrique Iglesias 'Hero'? Where is the imagination in any of this? Cowell has none. In the past he has admited that he does not 'get' any Artists who are unusual in any way - Bowie, Kate Bush, & Bob Dylan, to name but 3. He also says that he 'deserves' more money than Bruce Springsteen, as he has 'Sold more records', than Springsteen! Cowell has Zero Musical creativity - can't sing, write songs, produce records, or play instruments, but he looks down on Acts who can! As about 80% of the 'X Factor' is finding people who look good - singing is secondary - there is no way that he'd have ever let Queen, Slade, Elton John, or Led Zeppelin, through to the Final. He'd have said that all 4 Acts were, 'Too ugly to be a success'. Yet he has the cheek to allow 'his' X Factor Acts to sing Queen etc. Songs, in the 'Rounds'. Then we have Cheryl Cole judging the Singing, when she clearly has not got a decent voice herself. When she does get on the 'X Factor' Stage, to 'Sing', she either mimes or uses autotune, & surrounds herself with loads & loads of dancers - all designed to hide the fact that she can't sing. But, she sits there in judgement on whether this or that Contestant can sing. Now we have Cowell going the 'Charity Single' route again - as he knows it is easy UK No.1 territory, & his Ego sees these No.1's - many of them Covers - as somehow making him look like a Music Tycoon. A man with all it takes to have No.1's. The whole thing is a laughable heap of garbage. Why so many buy into it, I don't know. But, if everyone saw through him, Cowell would not be rich - so he's thankful that so many are taken in.....

Yes, that's correct. Also - Tinie Tempah looks like being the only Act, of the 4, to NOT have the No.1 Single, at some stage during the 'Feat'. He's unlikely to manage 2 Singles in the Top 5 next Week, & he may not have the No.1 Album, either.

Glee beats Beatles chart record
The Glee beating The Beatles hype is laughable. 1) Of the 75 'Glee' Billboard Hot 100 Hits, only 14 spent more than 1 Week on the Chart. 2) Only 1 made the Top 10 - their Cover of Journey's 'Don't Stop Believin' - No.4. 3) Of The Beatles 71 Hot 100 Hits, 34 made the Top 10. 4) 20 of The Beatles Hits were No.1's. But - just because 'Glee' has had 75 Hot 100 Hits, to The Beatles 71, the USA & UK Media is running the story as if 'Glee' is bigger than The Beatles! Indeed, that is what Gordon 'Misnomer' Smart, said in today's, 'The Sun':, "THERE are few acts in history bigger than THE BEATLES - but the cast of GLEE now officially are". 2010 'British Hit Singles' Book (Details)
Spicefunk - As far as I understand it, the 2010 'British Hit Singles' Book goes up to the Chart of W/E 10th April THIS Year - inclusive. At first I was told W/E 3rd April, but - in various ways - I worked out that the Data went up to a Week later than that - 10th April.

Duffy - Well Well Well
You can hear a SOUNDCLIP of the entire Song here:, (See it at the bottom of the Article). http://smurl.name/uc98 I'm not sure if it is strong enough to be the lead Single from her 2nd Album - 'Endlessly'. Especially as she needs to really have a huge Single, after taking far too long to follow-up the hugely successful 'Rockferry' Album. I like 'Well Well Well' - but, as to whether it is strong enough to regain her momentum - it is not by any means certain.....

2010 'British Hit Singles' Book (Details)
They have addressed the 'mess' that was the 2008 Book. The more people who buy the 2010 Book, the more chance of a 2011 Album Book, & 2012 Singles Book. It is in 'Chart Fans' hands, whether these Books continue or not. We are very lucky in the UK - the people who compile the German Charts, refuse to let anyone do German Chart Books. There have not been any there for many Years.

2010 'British Hit Singles' Book (Details)
The 2nd Volume of the 'Virgin Book Of British Hit Singles' is out on Thursday 4th November. Amazon.uk are currently taking Pre-Orders for it - at £13, rather than its full price of £20. LINK:, http://smurl.name/e4z6 Here is Amazon's description of it:, "The second in this new series, The Virgin Book of Hit Singles is the most-up-to-date and comprehensive record of the music charts available today and a perfect, collectable complement to The Virgin Book of Hit Albums and The Virgin Book of Top 75 Charts. Now improved and fine-tuned, and drawn from the Official Charts Company Data since 1952, The Virgin Book of Hit Singles features the most comprehensive, easy to read and accessible music chart data and information. It's all here -- expanded artist biographies, side notes of interest, label and catalogue numbers, peak positions, number of weeks on chart and weeks at number one. Also includes EP charts. The Virgin Book of Hit Singles is essential reading, and reference, for any music lover". SOMEONE'S COMMENTS ON THE 2010 'HIT SINGLES' BOOK Someone has seen the 'Hit Singles' Book, & describes it on James Masterton's Chart Blog. I thought that you'd like to see what the Fellow says. (It will be a Male - hardly any Females are interested in Chart Books. People who run Book Shops have often told me that, when I've asked). He calls himself 'This Charming Man', & he says:, "Chart lovers: GOOD NEWS! I have seen an early copy of the new Virgin British Hit Singles and it's ace. Lists of best selling singles/dowloads ever and by year. The short-lived EP charts listings, lists of "more weeks at #1" by artist and single, "in the top 10" etc... They vastly make up for the poor showing of 2 years ago. And they have "weeks in the charts" column as opposed to "weeks in the Top 40" as they did last time. I hope this doesn't count as spam as I am effectively promoting something, so apologies if I am offending anyone". @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ Anyhow - with full Top 75 Weeks On Chart, & EP Chart Data added in - plus many other improvements, on the 2008 Edition - it looks like the 2010 Edition will be well worth buying for Chart Fans.

The Suedehead Chart Commentary
Suedehead2 - 'Down Down' wasn't a 1973 No.1 for Status Quo. It entered the UK Charts in December 1974, & was No.1, (1 Week), On W/E 18th January 1975. Nor was it their only No.1 Single. They also went to No.1 in 1994 - with the Manchester United Football Squad. The Single was 'Come On You Reds', & it was No.1 - for 2 Weeks - in May 1994.

Top 500 Number 1 Singles (based on chart runs)
At a guess, I'd say that at least 15 to 18 of the Top 30 will be by No.1 Singles from 2005 to 2009. Downloads are enabling really popular Hits, to stay on the Charts for far longer than most No.1's have done, for Decades. Yes - Robson & Jerome really did only release 3 Singles, & all 3 went to No.1. (2 in 1995 & 1 in 1996). They only released 2 Albums - and both were No.1's. (1995 & 1996). A 3rd Album was released in 1997, but it was a 'Best Of', & it only got to No.20.

Virgin Book of British Hit Singles 2010
Far more effort has gone into the 2010 'Hit Singles' Book. (Than went into the 2008 Edition). There are numerous Facts & Feats in it, & it is Top 75 based, this time. Depending on how well the 2010 Edition sells, there will be future 'Hit Singles', & 'Hit Albums', Books. There will not be any future 'Top 40' Charts Books, as the 2009 Edition did not sell well enough to justify up-dated editions.

The Suedehead Chart Commentary
'Gold', by ABBA, spent 58 Weeks in the Top 10. (433 - so far - in the Top 75). 'Greatest Hits' by Queen, is the UK's Best Selling Album, but it 'only' spent 23 Weeks in the Top 10. It spent 472 Weeks on the Chart, but 'only' 410 of those were in the Top 75. Its other 62 Weeks are Positions from 76 to 100, when the entire Top 100 was used for Chart Books. (August 1981 to January 1989). The Queen Album, that spent the most Weeks in the Top 10, was their 1984 Album, 'The Works. It was in the Top 10 for 25 Weeks. Ironically, it was not one of their 9 No.1 Albums. It Peaked at No.2 - for 3 Weeks - non-consecutive.

Up-Dated UK Million Sellers - On BBC Radio 2
Well, I'm floundering a bit, with the Peter Andre Single - I've probably still got it too high, by estimating that it is the UK's 111th Best Selling Single. Eventually I'll try to get more precise details of the Sales of 'Bleeding Love', 'Crazy', & 'Whole Again'. Plus the status, (as regards being close - or not - to a Million), of 'White Christmas', 'I Will Survive', & 'Don't Stand So Close To Me'. I saw the Joe Meek Film - and, (before I did), I assumed that it would cause several of 'his' old Hits to get a Downloads boost. However, the Film was awful, & I assume that anyone who did see it already had Joe Meek Compilations & so on. (The Film made him look like a very dangerous & unstable Fellow - which he turned out to be, of course!). Cliff Richard Fans tend to buy his Hits via Compilations, or 'Live' DVD's, these Days - and now the 'Daily Mail' is going to be giving away his old Films, from Saturday, (18th September), onwards.
