007 Chart Commentary (the return)
Loudjamesbond - I don't like Rap much either - but, like you, I like Eminem. And THAT is why he's had 6 No.1 UK Albums etc. - he's managed to appeal to people who aren't keen on Rap, as well as to those who like it. (He's also been credited on 21 Top 10 Singles - so far. 7 of them at No.1). In its 3rd Week in the Top 10, 'All The Lovers' gives Kylie her 114th Top 10 Singles Week, in the UK. It brings her level with ABBA - who she will soon over-take, of course. However, she's need over 22 Years, & 33 Top 10 Hits, to get her 114 Weeks, & they managed it in less than 8 Years, & with 19 Top 10 Hits. She & ABBA are the 2 Acts from outside the UK & USA, with the most No.1 Hits, & Weeks in the Top 10, etc. here. However, her 7 No.1 Singles, & 16 Weeks at No.1, are still way behind ABBA's 9 No.1's, & 31 No.1 Weeks. This post has been edited by zeus555: Yesterday, 09:18 PM

Elsewhere, someone called Philip, has pointed out that Black Eyed Peas now have the Single with the most consecutive Top 75 Weeks, for a Group. It is 'I Gotta Feeling' - No.52 this Week, & on its 52nd Top 75 Week, in a row. It is beaten only by 'Release Me', by Engelbert Humperdinck, (56 in a row), & 'Stranger On The Shore', by Mr. Acker Bilk, (55 in a row). The Black Eyed Peas Single has Charted for 54 Weeks, over all, as it was at No.70 & No.68 last June, before dropping to No.79, & then re-entering, at No.39, on W/E 11th July 2009 - and it has been in the Top 75 ever since.

By having his 6th UK No.1 Album, in a row, Eminem breaks 3 UK Chart Records:, 1) The American Act with the most consecutive No.1 Albums. 2) The Male Solo Act with the most consecutive No.1 Albums. 3) The Solo Act with the most consecutive No.1 Albums. ELVIS PRESLEY & MADONNA Both had 11 No.1 Albums each. Elvis never had more than 2 at No.1 in a row - 1960/1961, & 1962. Madonna had 3 in a row, in 1997 - 2000, & 2 in a row, in 2008 - 2009. The OCC give 'Bohemian Rhapsody' 1,190,000 Sales in 1975/1976, & 940,000 in 1991/1992 = 2,130,000. It has sold 150,000 as a Download too = 2,280,000 Sales over-all.- Fastest Selling UK Singles?
Is there a List of the 'Fastest Selling' UK Singles? The ones that sold the most copies in a Week? BAND AID For example, some Sites & Books, say that the original 'Do They Know It's Christmas' (1984), sold 'A UK Million' in its 1st Week. Other sources say it sold 750,000 in the UK, in its 1st Week. Which is correct? I think it was 750,000 - from memory. GALLUP - But - This Press Clipping from 1984, has Gallup, (who Compiled the Charts then), saying it sold 600,000 in its 1st Week:, http://www.80sactual.com/2009/04/1984-band...y-know-its.html It seems rather low to me, when 750,000 or 1 Million are now given as its 1st Week Sales. Where does that place it in the UK's Fastest Sellers? Then there is the Elton John No.1, from 1997.- The Suedehead Chart Commentary
Suedehead2 - Obviously, the more Albums an Act releases, the less chance there is that all of their Studio Albums will reach No.1. Madonna started off slow, so her 'Madonna' Album, (1984), only reached No.6, in 1985 - re-titled, 'The First Album'. U2, started slow too, as did Queen, ABBA, Police, & R.E.M. They all took a while to have No.1 Studio Albums. Eminem has reached No.1 with 4 Studio Albums - out of 5 - so far. But, the first - 'The Slim Shady LP', (1999), was only a No.10 Album. The Beatles reached No.1 with all 11 of their Studio Albums. (1963 to 1970). Some would say, the first 9 reached No.1, & then 'Yellow Submarine', (No.3 - 1969), broke the run. However, not all of that Album was by The Beatles. They were only on the 6 Tracks on Side 1. The 7 Tracks on Side 2, were Instrumentals etc. Oasis seem to be only the 2nd Act, to have had more than 6 Studio Albums, that all reached No.1 - 7 in their case. The Beatles are the only other Act to achieve it. Boyzone have had 4 Studio Albums in the UK, (since 1995), & all 4 have reached No.1. The 4th was 'Brother', earlier this Year. Coldplay have also released 4 Studio Albums, (2000 - 2008), & all 4 of theirs have reached No.1. Robbie Williams saw his 1st 7 Studio Albums go to No.1 - 1998 to 2006. (The first was released in 1997). But, the 8th - 'Reality Killed The Video Star' (2009) - spoilt the 'Run', & stalled at No.2.....- The Suedehead Chart Commentary
Bray - Thanks for spotting that I'd missed out Editors - I've now added them to the List. NUMBER 1 ALBUMS THAT VANISHED FROM THE CHARTS 1) 'THE FOUR & ONLY SEEKERS' - THE SEEKERS (1968) For W/E 8th March 1968, the 'Record Retailer' Chart had 'The Four & Only Seekers', by The Seekers, as a New Entry, at No.1. It was a Budget Album. This Chart should not have included Budget Albums. The correct Chart still had 'Diana Ross & The Supremes Join The Temptations', by Diana Ross & The Supremes With The Temptations, at No.1 - for a 4th, (& final), Week. The Seekers Album has been eradicated from Chart History - the only Album to enter at No.1, & leave No.1, in the same Chart! And, yet, to never have Charted at all..... 2) '40 GREATEST' - ELVIS PRESLEY (1974) (Some call it '40 Greatest Hits', & some 'Elvis Presley's 40 Greatest Hits'. The Album Cover actually credits it as '40 Greatest'). This Elvis Album was No.1, for several Weeks, in late 1974, & early 1975. None of which are now recognised as No.1 Weeks for him. It was removed from the Chart on W/E 8th March 1975 having been at No.2 on the W/E 1st March Chart. Then Chart History was re-written, & we are told that it did not Chart until W/E 5th July 1975, (A No.25 Entry). That it did not even reach the Top 10 until W/E 3rd September 1977 - reaching No.1 - for 1 Week - on W/E 10th September 1977. (Yet it was the 4th Best Seller of 1974, & the 6th Best Seller of 1975 - which means that it outsold many of the Albums, in the Chart, that we now pretend it did not enter until July 1975 ). Here are its Chart Positions in the Comprehensive Chart, at the time - a Weekly BMRB Album Chart, that combined both Budget & Full Price Albums - so you could see which Albums were really selling the most - not just which Full Priced ones were..... W/E 9th November 1974 - 4-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 - (1975) - 1-??-??-11-4-2-1-1-2 We now pretend that 'Greatest Hits', by Elton John, was No.1, for 11 Weeks - in the 'Main' Chart - from W/E 23rd November 1974 to W/E 1st February 1975 - 11 Weeks. In fact, it would have been at No.2 - for at least 7 of those Weeks - had the Elvis Album not been banished from the Chart..... 3) 'THAT'LL BE THE DAY - ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK (1973) In 1973, the 'That'll Be The Day' Soundtrack, was removed from the Album Chart - from No.1. It was on its 7th No.1 Week, in the W/E 11th August Chart, & was gone, from the entire Chart, in the W/E 18th August Chart. But, it was still Selling - the Chart Compilers, simply decided that it no longer qualified to be in the Chart. Its entire Chart Run was:, W/E 23rd June 1973 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - OUT 4) 'NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC 13' - VARIOUS ARTISTS (1989) For The Chart of W/E 14th January 1989, Gallup removed all Various Artist Compilations, & put them in their own Chart. 'Now 13' was No.1 at the time, & was removed from the 'Artist' Chart, & put into the Compilation Chart. Befrore it was removed, its Chart Run was:, W/E 3rd December 1988 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 2 - 2 - 1 - OUT- The Suedehead Chart Commentary
By entering at No.60, The Glee Cast take 'To Sir With Love', into the UK Charts for the first time. It was originally a 1967 USA No.1 Hit, (5 Weeks), for Lulu - from the Film of the same name, in which she sang it. It was never released as a UK Single. Instead, it was the 'B' Side of her 1967 UK No.11 Hit, Let's Pretend'. Just as in the USA, 'The Boat That I Row', was the 'B' Side of 'To Sir With Love' - and so that UK No.6 Hit, (1967), missed out on the chance to be a USA Hit. She finally got a UK No.1 in 1993, on 'Relight My Fire', with Take That. (A Cover of a 1979 Dan Hartman Hit). I've altered the credits on the 'Shout' Single, now. They may as well credit it to Shout AT England, if the English Team play as half heartedly, as they did the other day, against the USA! As for Simon Cowell - why not just give him an Outstanding Contribution Award at The BRITS? The joke may as well go the whole way.- The Suedehead Chart Commentary
'Shout' - Shout For England Feat. Dizzee Rascal & James Corden is the 6th UK No.1 Single, with a Football Theme/Connection. The 6 - so far - are:, 1) 'Back Home' - England World Cup Squad (3 Weeks at No.1 - 1970) 2) 'World In Motion' - Englandneworder (2 Weeks at No.1 - 1990) 3) 'Come On You Reds' - Manchester United F C with Status Quo (2 Weeks at No.1 - 1994) 4) 'Three Lions' - Baddiel & Skinnner & The Lightning Seeds (2 Weeks at No.1 - 1996) 5) '3 Lions '98' - Baddiel & Skinner & The Lightning Seeds (3 Weeks at No.1 - 1998) 6) 'Shout' - Shout For England Feat. Dizzee Rascal & James Corden (2010) Apparently, Simon Cowell has been waiting for the 'right artists' to record 'Shout For England', for 15 Years. How nice, that Simon - yet again - is really associated with old Songs, sampling, & other people's work. The Man creates nothing. I think that the Shakira Single, (No.38) - 'Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)', is a far better Football Song - or Song, of any genre - than the rubbish at No.1....- Songs which have now probably sold over a million copies
Bray - 'My Way', by Frank Sinatra, was in the Top 100 for 124 Weeks - not 122. It Re-Charted - for 2 Weeks in 1994:, W/E 16th April 1994:, 45-58 'Release Me', by Engelbert Humperdinck, gained a 57th Chart Week in 2004. That Week is missed by many 'Hits With Most Chart Weeks', compilers, too. W/E 12th June 2004:, 51 Both Hits would have Charted for far longer, had there actually been a UK Top 100, when they were originally in the Charts.....- The Suedehead Chart Commentary
M!key - I've just found a 'Biggest Leap To No.1' that we both missed:, W/E 6th November 1965 - 17 to 1:, 'Get Off Of My Cloud' - Rolling Stones:, Its UK Chart 'Run':, (W/E 30th October 1965) - 17-1-1-1-3-4-9-16-23-23-29-35- UK's Top 60 Best Selling Singles Of The 1960's
Well, I disliked 'Tears' a great deal. However, I think that the follow-up - 'The River', is a very beautiful Song. It was originally an Entry in the San Remo Festival, for Wilma Goich, in 1965. Her version is much better than his. She is Italian, & the original Title is, 'Le Colline Sono In Fiore' Ken Dodd took it to No.3, here. Many Hits by 'square', (as in 'uncool'), Acts from the 1960's, (& 1950's), are really very beautiful Songs. I never dismiss Music just because the Act is regarded as uncool. I always judge Music on a Song by Song basis..... My only real dispute about Ken Dodd, is that some Journalists now think that only The Beatles sold more UK Records than him, in the 1960's! Such Journalists are so dumb, that I bet they have notices at the top of their ladders saying, 'Stop!'.....- UK's Top 60 Best Selling Singles Of The 1960's
I base much of it on my own estimates. I've also done the Top 15 Annual Singles from 1952 to 1959. 1952 has 2 Top 15's - one for Mid November to the end of December. One for the entire Year - adding in Sheet Music estimates. I've also done the Top 12 Albums of each Year from 1956 to 1959. Plus the Top 25 Singles of each Year from 1960 to 1969. And the Top 15 Albums of each Year from 1960 to 1969. All based on a mixture of research & estimates. My Lists are as valid as anyone else's - who tries to create 1950's & 1960's Lists. I'm sure that anyone who knows anything about Charts would come up with similar Annual Lists, if they tried to do what I've done. As such - who is to say who is right or wrong? Much of the Sales Data is lost forever, now - especially the 1950's Singles & Albums Totals.....- UK's Top 60 Best Selling Singles Of The 1960's

And by jumping from No.41 to No.1, the David Guetta Single has the 3rd biggest leap to No.1 ever, in the UK. Here are the Top 5 biggest leaps to No.1, (Singles Chart), that The OCC accepts:, 73 - BOYS & GIRLS - Pixie Lott (19-Sept-2009) 45 - HEY BABY, - DJ Otzi (22-Sept-2001) ** 41 - GETTIN’ OVER YOU - David Guetta Feat. Chris Willis (12-June-2010) 38 - SO WHAT - P!nk (11-Oct-2008) 35 - ABOUT YOU NOW - Sugababes (06-Oct-2007) *** = The DJ Otzi Single was on Import, when it was at No.45, but The OCC accept it as a genuine leap to No.1, as the Import & UK release had the same Catalogue Number. ** = Christina Aguilera - The OCC does not accept these 2 leaps to No.1, as her UK, (No.1), releases had different Catalogue Numbers than her Imports. So, The OCC regards the 2 Singles as entering at No.1 - as far as the UK versions are concerned:, 71 - BEAUTIFUL - Christina Aguilera (08-March-2003) ** 66 - GENIE IN A BOTTLE - Christina Aguilera (16-Oct-1999) ** And none of these count, either - because The OCC only accept leaps to No.1 from within the Top 75:, 2003 - Westlife – Mandy 200-1 (29-Nov-2003) 2002 - Westlife – Unbreakable 196-1 2002 - DJ Sammy featuring Yanou & Do – Heaven 191-1 2009 - Lily Allen - The Fear 168-1 2002 - Christina Aguilera – Dirrty 156-1 2004 - Band Aid 20 – Do They Know It’s Xmas? 144-1 2005 - McFly – You’ve Got A Friend 145-1 2001 - Rui Da Silva feat. Cassandra – Touch Me 128-1 2009 - Kelly Clarkson - My Life Would Suck Without You 103-1 2009 - Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name 80-1- UK's Top 60 Best Selling Singles Of The 1960's
KEN DODD - The fact that 'Tears' was the 3rd Best Seller of the 1960's, (in the recent OCC 1960's Top 60), has caused several UK Journalists to totally misunderstand! They think it means that Ken Dodd sold more UK Records in the 1960's, than any Act except The Beatles! (Tony Parson's repeated the nonsense in his 'Daily Mirror' Column, on Saturday). In fact, it merely means that 'Tears' was only outsold by 2 Beatles Singles in the 1960's - in the UK. It does not mean that he sold more Records, that Decade, than the Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, or The Shadows etc.! He only had 4 UK Top 10 Singles in the entire Decade, & only 2 of those reached the Top 5.... ALAN JONES' & JOHN TOBLER'S TOP 100 SINGLES OF THE 1960's (1982) This list was compiled by Alan Jones and appeared in the book 'The Rock Lists Album'. (1982) He co-compiled with another music journalist John Tobler. He states that it is in sales order, although it is clear he includes sales beyond the end of 1969. *** *** = As is obvious by the fact that ‘Space Oddity’, by David Bowie, is at No.45 in this 1960’s Top 100. It only reached No.5 in 1969, & it did not stay particularly long in the Charts at the time. It has clearly had its 1969 Sales added to its 1975 Sales - when it was a No.1 Hit - and that is why it is so high in this 1960’s Top 100. Likewise for 'My Way', by Frank Sinatra - No.60. It definitely has had its 1970's Sales added in. *** = I also indicate any other Singles that I think have had their 1970's Sales added in. 001 SHE LOVES YOU … Beatles 002 I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND … Beatles 003 TEARS … Ken Dodd 004 CAN'T BUY ME LOVE … Beatles 005 I FEEL FINE … Beatles 006 THE CARNIVAL IS OVER … Seekers 007 WE CAN WORK IT OUT/DAY TRIPPER … Beatles 008 RELEASE ME … Engelbert Humperdinck 009 IT'S NOW OR NEVER … Elvis Presley 010 GREEN GREEN GRASS OF HOME … Tom Jones 011 THE LAST WALTZ … Engelbert Humperdinck 012 I REMEMBER YOU … Frank Ifield 013 STRANGER ON THE SHORE … Acker Bilk 014 THE YOUNG ONES … Cliff Richard & the Shadows 015 SUGAR SUGAR … Archies *** 016 THE NEXT TIME/BACHELOR BOY … Cliff Richard & the Shadows 017 TELSTAR … Tornadoes 018 HELP … Beatles 019 TWO LITTLE BOYS … Rolf Harris *** 020 GLAD ALL OVER … Dave Clark Five 021 NEEDLES AND PINS … Searchers 022 ANYONE WHO HAD A HEART … Cilla Black 023 LOVESICK BLUES … Frank Ifield 024 HEY JUDE … Beatles 025 YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE … Gerry & the Pacemakers 026 I LOVE YOU BECAUSE … Jim Reeves (No.5 Hit) 027 THERE GOES MY EVERYTHING … Engelbert Humperdinck (No.2 Hit) 028 I WON'T FORGET YOU … Jim Reeves (No.3 Hit) 029 A HARD DAY'S NIGHT … Beatles 030 THE LAST TIME … Rolling Stones 031 I'LL NEVER FIND ANOTHER YOU … Seekers 032 ARE YOU SURE … Allisons (No.2 Hit) 033 DISTANT DRUMS … Jim Reeves 034 ARE YOU LONESOME TONIGHT … Elvis Presley 035 FROM ME TO YOU … Beatles 036 HELLO GOODBYE … Beatles 037 I'M A BELIEVER … Monkees 038 THOSE WERE THE DAYS … Mary Hopkin 039 WOODEN HEART … Elvis Presley 040 RETURN TO SENDER … Elvis Presley 041 OH PRETTY WOMAN … Roy Orbison 042 TWIST AND SHOUT EP … Beatles (Was not allowed into the 'Record Retailer' Singles Chart) 043 CAN'T HELP FALLING IN LOVE/ROCK-A-HULA BABY … Elvis Presley 044 DO WAH DIDDY DIDDY … Manfred Mann 045 SPACE ODDITY … David Bowie (No.5 Hit) *** 046 I GOT YOU BABE … Sonny & Cher 047 LILY THE PINK … Scaffold 048 A WHITER SHADE OF PALE … Procol Harum 049 JUST LOVING YOU … Anita Harris (No.6 Hit) 050 MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR EP … Beatles (No.2 Hit) 051 MY OLD MAN'S A DUSTMAN … Lonnie Donegan 052 (I CAN'T GET NO) SATISFACTION … Rolling Stones 053 MY BOY LOLLIPOP … Millie (No.2 Hit) 054 BOBBY'S GIRL … Susan Maughan (No.3 Hit) 055 I BELIEVE … Bachelors (No.2 Hit) 056 LITTLE CHILDREN … Billy J Kramer & the Dakotas 057 BITS AND PIECES … Dave Clark Five (No.2 Hit) 058 YOU'RE MY WORLD … Cilla Black 059 RUBY DON'T TAKE YOUR LOVE TO TOWN … Kenny Rogers & the First Edition (No.2 Hit) *** 060 MY WAY … Frank Sinatra (No.5 Hit) *** 061 TICKET TO RIDE … Beatles 062 THE WEDDING … Julie Rodgers (No.3 Hit) 063 GET BACK … Beatles with Billy Preston 064 STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT … Frank Sinatra 065 SURRENDER … Elvis Presley 066 HONEY … Bobby Goldsboro (No.2 Hit) *** 067 HAVE I THE RIGHT … Honeycombs 068 ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE … Beatles 069 WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD/CABARET … Louis Armstrong 070 WONDERFUL LAND … Shadows 071 A WORLD WITHOUT LOVE … Peter & Gordon 072 IT'S NOT UNUSUAL … Tom Jones 073 CINDERELLA ROCKEFELLA … Esther & Abi Ofarim 074 PUPPET ON A STRING … Sandie Shaw 075 PAPERBACK WRITER … Beatles 076 DIANE … Bachelors 077 DELILAH … Tom Jones (No.2 Hit) 078 PENNY LANE/STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER … Beatles (No.2 Hit) 079 WALKIN' BACK TO HAPPINESS … Helen Shapiro 080 APACHE … Shadows 081 YELLOW SUBMARINE/ELEANOR RIGBY … Beatles 082 IT'S OVER … Roy Orbison 083 HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN … Animals 084 GO NOW … Moody Blues 085 THIS IS MY SONG … Petula Clark 086 THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKIN' … Nancy Sinatra 087 HONKY TONK WOMEN … Rolling Stones 088 I'M INTO SOMETHING GOOD … Herman's Hermits 089 I CAN'T STOP LOVING YOU … Ray Charles 090 SOMETHIN' STUPID … Nancy Sinatra & Frank Sinatra 091 JULIET … Four Pennies 092 MARCH OF THE SIAMESE CHILDREN … Kenny Ball & his Jazzmen (No.4 Hit) 093 MR TAMBOURINE MAN … Byrds 094 GOOD LUCK CHARM … Elvis Presley 095 SILENCE IS GOLDEN … Tremeloes 096 MASSACHUSETTS … Bee Gees 097 YEH YEH … Georgie Fame & the Blue Flames 098 THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY … Hugo Montenegro 099 YOUNG GIRL … Union Gap featuring Gary Puckett 100 CRYING IN THE CHAPEL … Elvis Presley- UK's Top 60 Best Selling Singles Of The 1960's

The Beatles - Can't Buy Me Love 03. Ken Dodd — Tears 02. The Beatles — I Want To Hold Your Hand 01. The Beatles — She Loves You Here's some interesting facts about this chart * The Beatles make up nearly a third of it (18 of the 60 positions including 5 of the top 7) * The Rolling Stones are second with five singles (but none in the top 30). * Ken Dodd, The Seekers and Engelbert Humperdink all attain higher chart positions than The Stones, Elvis and Cliff. * It's a male dominated chart - there are only two solo ladies (Cilla Black and Mary Hopkin) with a song apiece. * It rises to four female hits if you count The Seekers (lead vocalist Judith Durham) who have two entries. * In the era of the British invasion, it's a very British chart so multiple entries for The Beatles, The Stones, Cliff Richard, Tom Jones, Engelbert Humperdinck plus hits from Mary Hopkin, Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Allisons, Cilla, The Shadows, Dave Clarke Five, The Tornados and Ken Dodd mean over half the records are by Brits. * 'Crooners' do pretty well - Jim Reeves, Engelbert Humperdinck and Frank Sinatra all make more than one appearance. * There are three instumental hits within the 60... Telstar - The Tornados, Stranger On The Shore - Acker Bilk, Apache - The Shadows * Many records have TV or film links; eg Summer Holiday, A Hard Day's Night, Wooden Heart (GI Blues), Magical Mystery Tour EP, I'm A Believer, Yellow Submarine, Strangers In The Night (A Man Could Get Killed), Sugar Sugar, You'll Never Walk Alone (Carousel), Help!, The Young Ones, Stranger On The Shore, Can't Buy Me Love (A Hard Day's Night). * Sadly no place for The Move's Flowers In The Rain (Tony Blackburn's first record on Radio 1) or any of Tony's singles. * Incredibly, there's no place for Dusty Springfield, Simon & Garfunkel, The Walker Brothers, Sandy Shaw, The Hollies or Procol Harum * The 1960s is the decade you associate with the classic sound of Motown but not one of the 60 singles on the chart is a Motown record. The Top 10 At A Glance: 1. She Loves You - The Beatles 2. I Want To Hold Your Hand - The Beatles 3. Tears - Ken Dodd 4. Can't Buy Me Love - The Beatles 5. I Feel Love - The Beatles 6. The Carnival Is Over - The Seekers 7. We Can Work It Out/Day Tripper - The Beatles 8. Release Me - Engelbert Humperdink 9. It's Now Or Never - Elvis Presley 10. Green Green Grass Of Home - Tom Jones The Press Association have commented on the Top 60 with:, He is better known for his tickling stick and Diddy Men but new research shows Ken Dodd was one of the biggest selling chart stars of the 60s, beaten only by The Beatles. His hit single Tears was the third biggest selling single of the entire decade, according to a newly compiled chart which brings together sales data from the era. Unsurprisingly The Beatles dominated the chart, which was counted down by BBC Radio 2 on Monday, with five tracks in the top 10. Comedian Dodd scored a string of hits in the early 60s, including what became his signature tune Happiness, but the biggest of them was Tears. The single went to number one and was the highest seller of 1965. Sales data compiled by The Official Charts Company shows that it outsold monster hits such as Can't Buy Me Love and I Feel Fine by the Fab Four, which were placed in fourth and fifth position in the new chart. The largest selling single of the 1960s was She Loves You by The Beatles, followed by I Want To Hold Your Hand. It means that the entire top five is taken by Liverpudlian acts. The Radio 2 programme, presented by Tony Blackburn, was collated data from January 1 1960 to December 31 1969. The Beatles take up six places in the top 20 and make up nearly a third of the 60 tracks played by Blackburn, with 18 entries. But the list shows that it was more than guitar groups which dominated the public's interest during the decade. Alongside Dodd, other big sellers included yodelling Frank Ifield, Engelbert Humperdinck, Acker Bilk and Rolf Harris. ########################################################################## As you can see, The OCC do not have 'Wonderful Land', by The Shadows, in the Top 60 of the 1960's - despite its 8 Weeks at No.1, in 1962. Time for the UK to pull out of the ESC. It has zero to do with music, anyhow. There hasn't been a truly Global smash from it since Gina G in 1996, & even that was no-where near as big as 'Waterloo' in 1974. Every Year, (when people say we should pull out), you get people saying how it gets big BBC Ratings, & so on. Not anymore it doesn't - the UK Ratings are down 2 Million on 2009. So, even the 'It gets big ratings!', excuse won't wash anymore! In the past the BBC could use the excuse that the ESC may be garbage, but it is popular garbage. The BBC is fast running out of the option to use that excuse. THE UK ESC TV RATINGS - 2009 & 2010:, 5.8m (25.5%) watched Eurovision in the UK last night. Lowest rating ever. It only peaked at 7.8m (43%). 2009 - 7.8m (Peak of 9.8m) = A loss of 2 Million viewers, Year on Year.- The Suedehead Chart Commentary
But - Suedehead2 - ABBA still hold the record for longest gaps at No.1 with exactly the same Album. The 'Gold', that they reached No.1 with in 1999, had exactly the same 19 Tracks, as when it was No.1 in 1992. And it had exactly the same 19 Tracks, when it made No.1 again, in 2008. The Stones Album had a 10 Track Disk added to be No.1 in 2010.....So, it was the 1972 Album with a 2nd Album added..... - The Suedehead Chart Commentary
