Lady GaGa becomes the only 18th Act to have the No.1 Single & Album, (same Week), more than once. She managed it in April 2009, as well. Her achievement is even bigger, when you realise that she's only the 2nd Solo Female to achieve it more than once. Madonna is the other. (She managed it in 1986, 1989, 2005, & 2008). The only other Females to manage it more than once, were in Groups - Agnetha & Frida in ABBA, (1976, 1977, 1978, & 1980), Spice Girls, (1996 & 1997), & Sugababes, (2005 & 2007). I realise that 'Telephone' is not strictly a Solo Lady GaGa Single, (Beyonce is on it), but, the fact that Lady GaGa is also Singing on it, means that she has achieved the 'Double Top', twice. Just as in 2008, (when Madonna did it for the 4th time), Justin Timberlake was Singing on her Single. ('4 Minutes').

  4. The 'Record' is for 'Fresh' Hits to Chart. Michael Jackson's 2009 Hits had all been Hits before. I realise that the Glee Hits are Covers, but they had not been Hits by the Glee Cast before. Thankfully, I can predict, with 100% accuracy, that the 'Glee Phenomenon' will prove to be no more long lasting that Kids From Fame, who were huge in the UK, in 1982, & meant Zero by 1984..... It is best when the Charts are dominated by new Songs, & by Acts who can write such Songs. The Beatles, Stones, ABBA, & Queen, managed it very well - why so many Acts today rely on Covers etc., just shows that they simply are not as talented as many older Acts.....
  5. I just find it amusing that on every Forum where I've seen the Single criticised, you get people - who like it - saying things like, 'How much have you donated?'. And, 'You are selfish!', & so on. Yet - time & time again - other people who support the Single, say that it was made to get people who would otherwise not have donated, to hand over some cash for Haiti. In other words - those people who will only help someone in need if they get something in return! I call THAT 100% selfish. And - the Single is still garbage. It always will be. That is the majority view. I saw 3 idiots on Channel 5, going on about how, 'Powerful', & 'Moving' it is. It isn't. It's just a load of voices - that don't even work properly together. Singing this or that line, from a Song, that sounds to me like a song about Suicide, rather than a compassionate, suitable, Haiti Song..... And seeing as it was shown on every TV News Programme going, the other day, it really is not selling as well as the hype suggested it would. The 1st Band Aid Single sold 750,000 in a Week. The truth is that the Single would not exist, if every person singing on it had given just 5% of their wealth to Haiti. And Simon Cowell had done the same. And Rupert Murdoch had done the same - instead of 'The Sun', (which he owns), boasting day in day out, how the Single is its idea/project/whatever. Far, far more cash would have been raised, from the Egos jumping on the band wagon, than will ever be made from those members of the UK & Irish Public, who will buy the Single. The fact that the Single exists shows 2 things - the Acts, Cowell, & Murdoch, never handed even 1% of their cash over, & they simply had to have a No.1, to show how 'caring' they are. Even 'The Times' is fed up of this Charity Single. (The Comments, beneath the Article, are illuminating, too). http://smurl.name/8fg4
  6. NOTE - Even 'The Sun', (which has more or less taken most credit for the Single), admits that only £1 from each CD sold will go to Haiti. They have said, (all Week - each issue) - that there are 'inevitable costs', with making, & marketing a CD, & that's why £1, from each CD will go to Haiti. They have hinted that more cash than £1 COULD be 'squeezed' from the Single - but, they have been very careful not to guarantee that... Basically - if people just gave £3 or £4 directly to Haiti Charities, (as I did), then every penny counts for those Charities. If you buy the awful Single, only £1 is guaranteed towards Haiti. It has misled a lot of people! I do wish people would stop thinking that a terrible Single can do much to solve Haiti's problems. To hear some of the Acts on it talk, Haiti could not do without the Single! In fact, far, far less cash will come from it, than would have been made had those who bought it, simply donated directly to the Charities that are helping Haiti. I'm fed up of the hype around it too:, 1) A Heart Radio DJ appeared on TV, and saying he'd never seen a reaction, (to a Single), like it. That people had been 'phoning in, & saying they got so moved by it, that when they heard it in their cars, they had to pull over - because it made them cry. (The Single makes me cry too - because it is so awful!). 2) Gennaro Castaldo, (HMV 'Chart Expert'), telling 'The Sun', that:, 'Singles don't get to number one on their own'. He then urged people to buy one - or more - copies. He added:, 'We need to keep it at No.1 for a long time'. (Why are so many people going on as if this Single is the be all & end all of aid for Haiti, when it's not - and never will be?). He also said that it is on course to be the Best Selling Single, (in the UK), for 10 Years. This would mean that it needs to sell over 1 Million this Week - because that's what the 1st Will Young Single did in 2002. And the 1st Gareth Gates Single sold over 800,000 in its first Week - also in 2002. THEN, (a few days later), Gennaro declared that the Haiti Single is on course to be the UK's Best Seller of the CENTURY! As we are only in the 11th Year of the Century, he must be very clever - being able to see that it will outsell every Single for the next 89 Years, as well, as those from the past 11 Years! Far too much silly hype, over a Single that is artistically awful, & that only a percentage of the cash from goes to the actual Charities, that it was made for. (2 Charities).
  7. Apparently, the awful Haiti Single now has a Million 'Orders'. From Yahoo Blogs:, According to pre-order figures, more than a million copies will be sold when it is released on Sunday, with both Amazon and HMV reporting an extraordinary response. "This single will dominate the charts in the weeks ahead as the biggest release of the past ten years," said HMV spokesperson Gennaro Castaldo. The last single to sell over a million copies was Comic Relief fundraiser ‘Is This The Way To Amarillo' in 2005. Meanwhile, Band Aid's ‘Do They Know It's Christmas?' shifted a whopping 3.5 million in 1984. So can ‘Everybody Hurts' break that record? With acclaimed director Joseph Kahn currently putting the finishing touches to a video starring all the big names, anything is possible. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will see if the Single is No.1 for many Weeks, & if it really can come even close to beating Band Aid - which I doubt. All I know is that it is truly terrible as a Single, & that is the majority view all over The Internet - everywhere I've looked, anyhow. If they must show us how much they 'care', you'd think that they could come up with a better Single, than this. They should all have handed over 5% of their Wealth to Haiti, & kept away from the garbage Cover version, that they've insisted on dumping on us. Still, many people will buy it - for the 'Cause'. I fail to see why people can't simply give to the Haiti Appeals without needing something back in return - like that dreadful Single!
  8. Dave - 'Avatar' WILL be the No.1 All Time UK Box Office Film - but not just yet. And it is not 'Titanic' that is the No.1 UK Film - 'Mamma Mia!' over-took it, in 2008. The 'ABBA' Film took around £69,200,000 in the UK - which knocked 'Titanic' into 2nd place. 'Avatar' HAS overtaken 'Titanic' Globally, to become THE All Time Box Office Film. ('Mamma Mia!' is only 49th Globally). This is from a UK Box Office Site:, But Avatar is almost certain to make it to the all-time number one spot in the UK (currently occupied by Mamma Mia!, with £69.2m) – it will just take another couple of weeks, that's all.
  9. One of Take That, told 'The Sun' that he hopes the Single will not only help the people of Haiti, but will rebuild the entire Country - as good as - if not better - than before the Earthquake! So, he thinks that it will make BILLIONS, by the sounds of it! Talk about naive! Talk about silly. Why on Earth don't they simply ALL hand over 5% of their Savings NOW - why do a stupid Cover, that is not even out until February? Simon Cowell says the Single is his/their No.1 priority - WRONG. Simon Cowell, & his explicit, & obvious self promotion is his No.1 priority..... The whole thing reaks of a 'Aren't we all caring?', Publicity Stunt - by people who cannot live without praise & without Media attention. Sadly, some people fall for Cowell's stunts every time. They are the ones who make him rich. He loves such people.....And, in the meantime, Haiti needs money NOW.....
  10. Among the Acts 'confirmed' for the Single, are no less than 6 with Simon Cowell connections, in one way or another:, Westlife, Leona Lewis, Cheryl Cole, Alexandra Burke, Susan Boyle, & JLS. Mr. Cowell always manages to promote his Acts & Mates. It is true. Even a Charity Single is used in the same way - attention for Acts whom Simon has connections with. Some people say that Cheryl does not count - but, she does. She's a Judge on 'X Factor' - so, she is part of Simon's connections. Of course, it would be too much to ask if they skipped the Single, & just gave large donations out of all their, (very big), Bank Balances.....But, you don't get No.1 Singles, & lots of Press attention, that way.....
  11. Here is an Article about it at the 'Daily Mail' Site. See the 79 Comments beneath it. I agree with many of them. Simon Cowell is about as popular as Swine Flu, in the view of a great many people. There is no need for a Single. It is being made to attract attention - like far too many Charity Singles. http://smurl.name/5qt6
  12. Well, we are in January of the New Decade, & we can already see one of the potential Top 10 Sellers of the Decade - a Charity Cover of an R.E.M. Song. I don't care what people say about the 'Cause' - such developments are not good for UK Music - nothing to boast about. Nothing creative. It looks like Simon will carry on doing what he does best - getting other people to do Covers. As for Mr. Cowell inspiring others to give to Charity - if people will not assist worthy causes unless Simon shows the way, then God help them if he ever tells them to jump off a cliff! People should not need rich people to encourage them to help Haiti, or anywhere else, where there has been a disaster.....
  13. Apparently, the Single is Gordon Brown's idea. It is obvious why HE came up with the idea. He looks certain to lose the May or June General Election - so, it is another idea to try to gain Votes. (True). Like many Politicians, he will use any technique he can think of, to try to become more popular. Why can't he, Simon Cowell, (& the rest), simply give cash - quietly - to the Haiti Relief Fund? Why a Single? Answer - we've all got to SEE/KNOW that they are generous, charitable, & 'giving'. How sad that people feel that they need to use other peoples misfortunes to try to get Votes, No.1 Singles, & attention..... Sadly, it looks like this Decade will see a Top 10, (of the Decade), that is full of Charity Covers, & Reality TV Winners. None of which is good for Music. (As regards the Charity Singles - it is all because many rich people cannot give to Charity unless we ALL know about it).

Surely, the 2010 BRITS is NOT celebrating 30 Years of anything? It is the 30th BRITS. The 2 things are not the same. The BRITS began in 1977 - The Britannia Awards. It then took a break, and came back in 1982. It has carried on ever since. So, the 1977 BRITS was the 1st. And the 2010 BRITS are the 30th BRITS - counting the 1977 ones. 30 Years of The BRITS would suggest that it started in 1981, & the 2010 BRITS are the 30th since then. Wrong..... Even the Wikipedia Site thinks that 'Angels' was given the BRIT Award for the Best Single Of The Past 25 Years, in 2005. It didn't. It got the Award for the Best Single of the 1st 25 BRITS - 1977, & then 1982 to 2005 = 25 BRITS. The Nominations were for Singles from 1977 onwards. Had the Award been for 25 Years, there would have been nothing earlier than 1980 in the Nominations. There is a lot of confusion about these BRITS Anniversaries - many people misunderstand them.
  15. And he giving £50,000 is like a UK Penshioner giving £5. There is a part of The Bible, where Jesus points out how some Rich Men like to make a fuss, (make sure everyone knows), when they give to Charity. He then pointed to an old - poor - Woman - who was quietly giving her last few coins to Charity. She made no fuss, She just gave what little she had. Mr. Cowell gives a little of his huge wealth - and makes sure we all get to hear about it. The idea is that we say:, 'What a great guy!'. Such fellows are shallow - they have to be praised for giving. It is nothing to do with being kind. Everything to do with attention grabbing, publicity, & ego. Likewise for the Charity Single for Haiti - the lot of them could give quietly, but they just have to have a No.1 Single out of it. Mr. Cowell just has to be seen to be organising it. His Acts have to be a big part of it. It is so false & phoney, that it is amazing that so many people fall for such ego driven 'giving'!
  16. I DON'T have the 'Official' Top 300 Singles of the 1980's. I've estimated the Top 300. Only the Top 100 is truly accurate. Numbers 101 to 300 are estimated - by me. I spent hours & hours on it. However - my estimates ought not to be any more 'correct' than anyone else's. ANYONE can estimate the Top 300 of the 1980's. It just takes time & patience.
  17. I wasn't keen on Journey, But I too liked 'Oh Sherrie', by Steve Perry. It was a USA No.3 Hit, in 1984. It did nothing here in the UK.

By going into the UK Top 75 Album Chart at No.8, Elvis reaches 1334 Weeks on that Chart. Only Queen - 1429, & The Beatles - 1355 - are ahead of him. Elvis did not spend a single Week in the UK Top 75 in 2009. Fitting, then, that he does so in the 1st Chart of both 2010, & of the New Decade.
  19. Paul Gambaccini tells me that it was NOT his idea to use the 'Record Retailer' Charts. He also explains why those Charts were chosen - by Jo & Tim Rice:, 'Jo and Tim decided that the best chart for the early sixties was RECORD RETAILER because it was the trade magazine that evolved into MUSIC WEEK. I had nothing to do with that decision. They had been keen readers of RECORD RETAILER precisely because it was the nation's one and only trade magazine. Nowadays that might seem a strange decision to younger people more familiar with names like NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS and MELODY MAKER, but in 1973 it was perfectly sensible to use the trade magazine that was, at that time, only a few years old. Using RECORD RETAILER gave authority and continuity'. Paul also teklls me that it was HIS idea for the Guinness 'Hits' Books to be started, in the first place. He discussed it, in a 'phone call, to Tim Rice. They agreed that such Books were a good idea, & it went on from there.
  20. The Article below was in last night's 'Manchester Evening News'. According to them, there are 2 rival 'Campaigns' to get a Single to No.1 - the other is for The Smiths. Line 3 has the writer clearly thinking that 'Untouchable' is the only Girls Aloud Single to fail to reach No.1. In fact, they've had 21 Top 20 Hits, & only 4 went to No.1 - less than 20% of their Hits. She has misunderstood, & not realised that 'Untouchable' is their only Single to fail to reach the Top 10 - not to fail to get to No.1. It's The Smiths v Girls Aloud Katherine Faulkner January 09, 2010 A SHOWDOWN is brewing between Manchester legends The Smiths and pop superstars Girls Aloud. Fans of both acts are battling it out on social networking website Facebook to get them to number one in the second week of February. Girls Aloud fans want the group's single Untouchable to top the charts. The song, which was released in April last year, was the group's only single not to top the charts. But a Smiths tribute band, The Smiths Indeed, have started a rival campaign to give the Mancunian band their first ever British number one on the 25th anniversary of one of their most successful records. The tribute act want How Soon Is Now to reach number one to celebrate the February 1985 release of Meat Is Murder, the band’s most successful album. The group backing Girls Aloud is more than twice as big, with 7,333 fans. But The Smiths group was only launched on Tuesday and has so far attracted 3,127 members – nearly 1,000 a day. The campaign has been backed by ex-Smiths drummer Mike Joyce. The Smiths Indeed lead singer Jurgen Wendelen, 32, said he thought The Smiths' chances against Girls Aloud were very good.’ Liverpool-based Mr. Wendelen said: "I don't rate Girls Aloud's music at all. "It is manufactured -– it doesn't come from anywhere, it doesn't say anything. If anyone deserves a UK number one it is The Smiths. "Their contribution to British culture is outstanding. "The Smiths' music was created out of a need to say something real through music and that is what we need now in the charts." 'How Soon Is Now' is considered by many to be the band's best song, but was released as a B-side and never reached number one. Mr. Wendelen said: "It would be fantastic to get it to number one to celebrate the Smiths and their enormous impact on music." The Smiths formed in Manchester in 1982 but never released a single that charted higher than at number 10 in Britain. The top spot will go to the single bought or downloaded the most times between January 31 and February 6.
  21. Wasn't there 3 No.1 Singles in those BBC Charts, one Week? 'Do It Again' - Beach Boys, 'I Gotta Get A Message To You' - Bee Gees, & 'This Guys In Love With You' - Herb Alpert? This would have been in late August or early/mid September 1968. In the 'Record Retailer', ('Official'), Chart, the Herb Alpert Single never reached even No.2 - it was No.3 for 4 Weeks.

Regarding 2009's Year End Charts:, 1) Lady GaGa becomes the first Solo Female Singer to have 2 Singles in the UK'S Top 5 of the Year since 1958, when Connie Francis achieved it. ('Just Dance' was also credited to Colby O'Donis, but the Song is about 4.10 long, & he only Sings about 36 Seconds of it. She Sings the vast bulk of that Single). (Kylie Minogue was 3rd & 4th for 1988, but the Hit in 4th place - 'Especially For You', was a genuine 50/50 Duet with Jason Donovan, so it was not a Kylie Solo Hit). 2) The first Solo Female to have 2 Songs in the Top 10 of the Year, since 1961, when it was achieved by Helen Shapiro. (Madonna has never achieved it. She had 2 in the Top 20 of the Year in 1985, & 1986 - 1 in the Top 10, each time. Plus, 2 of the Top 20 of 1987 - neither in the Top 10). 3) Lady GaGa also becomes only the 2nd Female Singer to have more than 2 Hits in the Top 20 of the Year. She's at 1, 3, & 17, for the Year. In 1988, Kylie was 3rd, 4th, 11th, & 20th, for the Year - and in 21st place too! 4) Black Eyed Peas become the first USA Group to have as many as 3 Singles in the UK's Yearly Top 10. Elvis Presley was the last USA Act to achieve it - way back in 1962. 5) The Black Eyed Peas are also only the 2nd Act, with a Female in it, to have 3 of the Annual Top 10. The Spice Girls are the only other. They had the 2nd, 4th, & 5th, Best Sellers of 1996. (The Spice Girls are only the 2nd Act, to have had 3 of the Top 5 of the Year. The other is Engelbert Humperdinck, who had the Top 3 of the Year, in 1967). The Black Eyed Peas are 2nd, 7th, & 10th for 2009. 6) As regards Groups - Apart from the Spice Girls, & Black Eyed Peas - The Beatles had 3 of the Annual Top 10 in 1963, 1964, & 1965. 4 Hits in the Top 10 of 1963, if we count the 'Twist & Shout' EP. (Some Year End Lists do not show The Beatles achieving it - at all - in the 1960's, but those Lists are based on Points - not on Sales).

Kingofskiffle & I do not always agree. He may well be right - the Chart of Sunday 3rd January 2010, (W/E 9th January 2010), MAY well be added to 2009 - and, (therefore), 'The Noughties' Decade. It's just that this would mean that The OCC do not start their 2010/New Decade Sales until Sunday 10th January - the Chart of W/E 16th January. It seems rather late to me..... They ENDED the 1990's Decade Sales on W/E Saturday 1st January 2000 - meaning that they started their 'Noughties' Sales on Sunday 2nd January 2000 - W/E 8th January 2000.
  24. zeus555 posted a post in a topic in UK Charts
Right - I've checked:, 1) The OCC began their Charts/Sales for 'The Noughties'/Decade with the Charts that came out on Sunday 2nd January 2000. 2) That means that they began the Decade with the Charts of Saturday 8th January 2000. 3) They end the Decade with today's Charts - 27th December - for Week Ending 2nd January 2010. 4) They also end 2009 with the same Charts. 5) As far as I know, the Charts of Sunday 3rd January - for W/E 9th January - will NOT be added to either 2009 or 'The Noughties'. 6) It is up to 'Chart Fans' if they want to follow The OCC in this. I DO, as I like my Sales & Stats Lists to match those of The OCC, & UK Chart Books..... 7) The 2010 'Hit Singles' Book, (Virgin - November 2010) - will have a 'cut-off' Date of W/E 2nd January 2010.
  25. zeus555 posted a post in a topic in UK Charts
The fact is simple - the W/E 2nd January Charts are 2009 Charts - at least their SALES are - so The OCC will add those Sales to 2009. As they will also count any Chart Facts & Feats, & Statistics from those Charts, as 2009 ones. They will also count them - Sales/Stats - as belonging to 'The Noughties' - 2000 - 2009. That goes for today's, (W/B 27th December/W/E 2nd January), Singles, Albums, Compilations, & Music DVD's etc. The OCC have various Decade Top 3's, (many Genres - Singles, Albums, Films), on their 2010 Calendar. The 'Cut Off' Date for those Sales is W/E Saturday 5th December - so, it does not count Sales from 12th, 19th, 26th December, & 2nd January - because they needed to get the Calendar prepared - to send out, well before Christmas..... It is when The OCC START 'The Noughties' that is interesting - I will check on that, as it seems to contradict their Yearly start Weeks.....(They start their 'Noughties' Sales/Stats on W/E 2nd January 2000 - surely, it should be W/E 9th January 2000 - if their Sales/ Stats/Method is to be consistent?).
