Oh yes of course. Very unusual that these two happened in succession and one hasn't really happened since (not very soon after their death anyway, I know Elvis had a few in 2002 and 2005, Notorious B.I.G. had a No.1 in 2006 and obviously Last Christmas).

Last Christmas at least became a posthumous No.1 for George many times over, but granted not immediately after he died. I suppose the last to happen quite soon after an artist's death in relative terms (still about six months) was Aaliyah's More Than A Woman.

I finished last in that spin-off so I expect as a defense mechanism my mind wiped my entire memory of that contest 😂 This is the compilation I heard The Lion on more recently (forgetting it wasn't for the first time...) I think if there are many more pop countries this time then the alt bloc might have a slightly harder time qualifying depending on the semi balance, however the ones that get through to the final should be fine as the pop vote will just spread and dilute if there is loads of pop in the final and the alt songs left in the mix for the final will grab the concentrated alt bloc votes on offer. So alt bloc's main job this month is to find a qualifier and go from there! Pop bloc's main task is to make sure their entry is essential and not one that will get passed over in a sea of sameness.

I was just trying to send something that wasn't an obvious option for this contest and it's good to miss the bottom ten at least after how far it dropped at one point.

Thanks to the voters so far and apologies to those who had heard it before, I completely forgot that The Lion was sent to the BJSC 80s spin-off until Jade mentioned it! I did a site search too and couldn’t find mention of it. I know that sub forum is rather hidden away. Shamefully I even voted high for it at the time so feel a bit silly now as I was really happy with this as a kind of leftfield entry for this theme, but now it just looks a bit uninspired! Memory issues… Also just wanted to say huge props to Dandy and Jim, absolutely fantastic discoveries and it’s great to give my top points to songs doing so well. I only knew two songs by Melanie too and this was such a revelation. While I’ve never really been into Leonard Cohen at all, yet this is great and so is the song of his Tom Jones covered and is at No.1 on iTunes with which I only heard yesterday for the first time.

Exhaustion/depression I expect it’s supposed to convey originally. It definitely has another meaning like ‘iconic’ or ‘slay’ on here as stated.

Wishing I had sent something else and rooting for my 12 pointer which I doubt will do that much, and 10 pointer who in the last week I’ve discovered two songs by that I have found I unexpectedly enjoy.

100% agree. Always take the risk. Don’t worry about the streak, being interesting is more rewarding. And what if you end up sending the less satisfying safe song and don’t get the AQ and it ends up going out anyway? This year more than ever before has shown that risks are being awarded in the results.

Tom showing as No.1 for me, it was a very impactful performance and I had a feeling it would do big things on iTunes. Shame such TV performances rarely move the needle on streaming as it was a real moment and deserves to chart.

I liked both of these. I had a lot of time for Sam Bailey and I bought Skyscraper. It was a shame they didn't put her cover of Something by The Beatles on the CD single as I downloaded that on iTunes I enjoyed it so much. Obviously she was a power ballad singer, but I enjoyed her different treatment of these songs. Scream & Shout I absolutely loved at the time (it got to No.1 in my chart) although it sounds incredibly dated now. Great to see Britney on another No.1 though and loved her British accent attempt. Just a super catchy song too.

Babydoll is an unexpected title to appear twice in the top 100 with different songs. Just listened to the Jamie Miller song of that name, it sounds like it was inspired by the production of Man I Need with a sprinkle of Fleetwood Mac's Everywhere. Very 80s, especially with the sax. Nice that he's Welsh as we don't get many Welsh artist hits these days, hopefully it can climb into the top 75. Also listened to Pupsies' Misery, which could be the worst song I've heard this year, impressively bad.

Quite a fan of this on first listen and immediately went back for a second. Love the strings and the way pacing is used for dramatic effect. Refreshing to see a new pop song in the top 40, for me it fills a gap while Sabrina and Chappell are currently absent. I always thought Till Forever Falls Apart would be one of those songs that would take off eventually, but it didn't really (although has half a billion streams on Spotify so maybe the definition of 'taking off' is different now).

Joss Stone but it's ok. The Loving Kind is gorgeous and nothing like GA's weakest single. The album version is particularly beautiful.
