Confirmed finally. Was hesitating between three potentials, so took the week to see which I actively listened to the most.

Happy for Olivia Dean, it felt like she was slogging away for years getting not very far commercially (apart from that Amazon-assisted Christmas hit) and now suddenly she's finally breaking through in a big way. Good news for British music too after such a dry year last year, it does feel slightly more positive this year. Man I Need is definitely my favourite from her so far, I'd thought Golden would reign for quite a few weeks so it's good to see it have a challenger already potentially. The Subway really deserves such daily numbers too imo.

Not that I know of. BBC showed it as part of their Glastonbury coverage this year apparently if you saw any of that.

(Throws out my planned 10 minute instrumental idea). I think 55 is good for me, semis of 30-32 can get a bit brutal and also possibly make for cheaper entries from some countries as everybody is desperately in a fight for life for qualification. Whereas if there are only 5 or 6 DNQs they can probably take a more calculated risk.

Yeah I must admit there are a few here that I would maybe have expected to see in BJSC as this theme leant itself to new releases quite well. That said, only about a third were released in the last few weeks, there are a good few recent past songs and a couple of oldies too.

A big thank you to all THIRTY of you that submitted entries for the 17th edition of PFSC! Are you ready for some huge pop choruses? I know I am. And so are these two, whose hits Call Me Maybe and Since U Been Gone were voted the two best pop choruses of the 21st Century by Billboard, beating out the likes of Mr Brightside and Hey Ya. Feel free to guess and speculate though who might be behind each song, because that is always fun. I will be accepting guest votes from anybody who didn't submit a song. For those that have an entry in the contest, a deduction will be applied for any late or non-voters, costing you up to 33% of your points, so do vote! The deadline is Friday 5th September at 23:59 BST and I intend to host the results on the evening of Saturday 6th September (with the hope that we don't clash with another contest's results or we will be having an afternoon reveal!) Round 1: Year End Survivor #126
Hopefully a short goodbye for Ronan and another of his beige plods.

Round 4: Year End Survivor #125
The Saturdays, comfortably my least favourite single from them, the chorus is fairly unpleasant.

Jade's Top 40 | #438 (21.08.25)
Enfrente ❤️ Singapore is such a banger, I loved it in 2006 but haven’t heard it in so long as have mislaid my Sound Of Girls Aloud deluxe CD is in a box somewhere, the new version is great. The Subway is definitely one of my songs of the year, stunning.

Yeah it's a great turnout <3 Just been listening to the entries and there is some great stuff. Not much here that I would consider a DNQ if it were in BJSC.

Girls Aloud - Chemistry (20th Anniversary)
Yeah I just checked and it only peaked at No.8 in my personal chart too at the time and they pretty much always made No.1 or No.2! I liked it - don't get me wrong - but something didn't fully click. I think you're right - it wasn't a long hot summer, it was a meandering and depressing gloomy summer, and the song didn't fit what was happening! Maybe it was the right song at the wrong time? Also if you look at what else was charting then, it was up against a sad summer soundtrack of James Blunt, Daniel Powter, Mariah Carey etc, pop-rock from Kelly Clarkson and lots of indie stuff. Was the appetite there at the time for a song that - to me at the time - felt like b-tier Girls Aloud? Obviously it had a reappraisal on its own merits outside of the context of summer 2005, and it deserved that, but at the time it really didn't feel like it fit somehow, and I can't put my finger on why that is. Whereas Biology a few months later felt so fresh and like it had a real vision, and a great video in comparison. Pop really came back with force anyway that autumn so it was in good company - there was loads of great British pop stuff around from Sugababes, Liberty X, Simon Webbe, Friday Hill, Charlotte Church, Rachel Stevens etc!

Girls Aloud - Chemistry (20th Anniversary)
I wasn't massively enamoured by Chemistry on the whole, although the Christmas bonus disc was a great treat that I have listened to a lot over the years. Biology (amazing)/Whole Lotta History (my favourite GA ballad)/Wild Horses and Models I still play a lot, See The Day I liked at the time but less so now and Long Hot Summer I have grown to enjoy a lot more over time after only quite liking it when it came out. Watch Me Go is also decent but there are a few I don't listen to, whereas Tangled Up has a lot fewer skips for me, I think that's their magnum opus for me personally, I love it and it brings back so many good memories. I agree with Jay that despite the high sales, the No.11 peak accompanied by a No.9 single at the time wasn't exactly positive news for them. I remember thinking they were in trouble too until Something Kinda Ooooh turned things around (I was so ecstatic and surprised when that had such a high debut on downloads alone). And Biology of course did a lot of legwork in getting critics on side, enabling a critical reappraisal of their worth just in time for the Sound Of a year later. So Chemistry definitely did play its part in their legacy but there were still a few fillers. Whose idea was it to leave Crazy Fool off the album? They are indeed a crazy fool because that was my third favourite song of the entire era.

90s Top 10 Sales- Week by Week- 1998
What happened to It's Tricky in the end, was it cancelled? I don't understand why on earth they would do that, it could have been massive. It didn't chart at all in 1998 outside of that import.
