Jordan Lee’s ranking of Kylies studio albums
Thanks for sharing this first listen of Kylie's massive discography, jlj! It's so fascinating to see how someone with fresh ears reacts to the catalogue of my favourite artist. I have NEVER attempted to rank Kylie's albums, because once I get past the lukewarm placements (LGTI, KM94, and Kylie Christmas), I cannot fully settle on any order of preference for the rest  . It's also really hard for me to "fairly" rank the SAW albums with the Parlophone and BMG albums, because they're so far apart in time and artistic development that they almost seem like they're by two different artists. The bottom ranking is easier for me :P I would put Kylie Christmas dead last, because I'm not a festive person  Then, it's either KM94 or LGTI for me. I will say it's taken at least 10 years before I fully took in every track from these two albums, front to back. In general, these two albums are not as catchy as the albums before, or after. I would prolly rank KM94 under LGTI (!) I've never been a huge fan of Confide in Me (!!), while I love Word Is Out and Finer Feelings (single mix) much more as singles. Also, the KM94 album tracks do not give me the same highs as countless other album tracks in Kylie's catalogue. Her belting singing style is cool though. Over time, I now appreciate that both LGTI and KM94 showed Kylie taking a left turn away from bubblegum hit factory pop. These eras likely paved the way for even more unexpected sharp turns on the thrilling Impossible Princess. I also find it very interesting that she turned towards Black music for both LGTI and KM94. The Black American musical influence is all over both albums, from the instrumental tracks (with New Jack Swing, Quiet Storm, and House styles) to the soulful singing that Kylie pushed towards, to the other featured singers (duet and background), to the choice of cover (GMJALMT). I consider LGTI and KM94 more like R&B albums with a touch of Dance, than Pop albums. KMO found next to the ditch in your ranking...yikes! :o The only songs I don't like are the title track, and Beautiful. Everything else is in my regular Kylie rotation, with several all-time faves in there. I also fully believe if her first two albums were re-recorded with fresh production and Kylie's current vocals (while still keeping the same lyrics, melodies, and chords), the strength of the songs would be undeniable, and push the albums much higher in rankings. In terms of musical notes and chords, the early SAW songs are actually more complex than most of her Parlophone and BMG material, while still containing hook after hook. I found this out when I got a Kylie piano book and tried to play her catalogue ;) Lyrically, there are also strong examples like Got to Be Certain, It's No Secret (what a tearjerker lyrically), Wouldn't Change a Thing, and My Secret Heart (another really sad one), that give more storytelling than much of her Parlophone tracks, IMO.

Body Language ● album discussion
I loved reading your reaction, Andrew! I'm actually delighted that you love BL. It's one of the "dark horse"s in Kylie's discography and divides fans' opinions. This came out after Fever, after Kylie was on top of the world with her sleek, robotic, somewhat minimal dance-pop sound. Nobody expected the followup to sound like Body Language! That's one of the reasons it divided fans. I was thrown off too, but grew to love the album. I love the mix of electro, 80s synthpop, and R&B/hip-hop. I find it a bit less catchy than Fever, but more sophisticated and definitely more rhythmic. I don't love everything about BL. After Obsession, the final stretch of the album feels very patchy to me. But I do love the bonus tracks and B-sides! Off the top of my head, I remember Cruise Control, Soul on Fire, City Games, Almost a Lover, and the incredible Slo Motion  It's very interesting that you enjoy her vocals the most on this, versus the other Parlophone and BMG albums. She is SUPER breathy on this album. I get the feeling her whispery, "helium" vocals are another reason why BL is divisive in the fanbase. Even a BL lover like me would prefer less breathy, "chipmunky" vocals on many of the songs  The 3 videos from this album are also some of Kylie's best videos, IMO. Overall, I love BL. Now with DISCO in the mix, though, I'm unsure if BL stays in my Top 3 or Top 5 of Kylie's albums

I echo the anxious, nerve-wracking, excited feelings...the intensity for Kylie fans has been turned up to 11 since last week! Remember when the 1st batch of signed CDs was announced? It was madness :w00t: :P And then the onslaught of promo...I still haven't totally caught up  The moment of truth in less than 24 hours....EEEEEEK!!! :w00t:

Impossible Princess ● album discussion
IP will forever be a watershed moment in my Kylie fandom. I remember discovering it about a year or two after Fever dominated globally, and introduced me to Kylie Ann Minogue. It was around the launch of the Body Language era. I was working at a music store at the time, and ordered a copy of IP to check out on my lunch break. As soon as "Too Far" started playing, I...well, my everything was snatched and scalped. :w00t: I could not believe the sexy, stylish lady who did fresh, cool, and modern dance-pop like my fave "In Your Eyes", went experimental and explored so far outside of catchy pop hooks and dance beats. The introspective, restless lyrics. The plethora of styles and sounds. IP was my turning point from "Damn IYE is fierce" to "WHO IS KYLIE I need to consume every song she's ever done aaahhhh!!" It has a permanent residence in my Top 5 Kylie albums, if not Top 3. Now that DISCO blew my wig and lashes off, though, my Top 3 is spinning around and far from settled yet :mario: 10 Too Far 10 Cowboy Style 07 Some Kind Of Bliss 08 Did It Again 10 Breathe 10 Say Hey 10 Drunk 10 I Don't Need Anyone 06 Jump 10 Limbo 09 Through The Years 09 Dreams

Kylie names her three dream collaborators
Did everyone see this part? "There's been talk about my daughter and I doing a duet for, it feels like, 20 years." Pretty sure Kylie meant "Madonna" instead of "my daughter" Clearly, no one who wrote and edited this piece was a big Kylie fan...cuz if they were, they'd know right away that Kylie had no children  EDIT: ELLE must have corrected it on their site, cuz now the piece says "Madonna"

You wrote such beautiful words, Jay! Yeah, this is an excellent piece on Kylie. Very in-depth, well-researched, with great quotes from HERR, Tom Aspaul (!), and Alice Chater. There are so many facets to her 33-year career, and this piece covers a lot of them. I just feel so lucky lucky lucky as a fan, that Kylie is still here, she still wants to make new music, she's making AMAZING music, and she's providing joy and light during one of the most difficult years globally.

Fever ● album discussion
I've always loved "More More More" and thought it deserved way more shine. That's the thing with Fever, though: the singles were so MAMMOTH, era-defining, and influential, that the album tracks and B-sides were a bit overshadowed. I really love that, to my ears, "More More More" slots in really well with the DISCO tracks. I'd also love a mashup with Andrea True Connection's "More More More".

iTunes / Spotify / YouTube Watch
Just amazed at all the high iTunes placements that are holding on, internationally. Even in the Americas! :cheer: Things really could've gone another way, for a pop artist on her 15th album.

Kiss Me Once ● album discussion
THE TASTE  I wish I could delete "Beautiful" from existence. I LOVE KMO  . It's not a cohesive album, but most tracks are in my regular Kylie rotation: ITB, Million Miles, Sexy Love, Les Sex, Sexercize, Feels So Good, If Only, Mr. President, and Golden Boy b-side. Even though her vocals are often very processed, there are still spots where I catch how far her vocal skills have come.

The production is very dated, and Kylie's vocals hadn't developed yet (esp. on the 1st album), but the songs themselves  I was surprised at how musically "sturdy" they are. Ignoring the production, I actually like every song on the debut, for example.

DISCO ● 15th Studio Album
Wow, you know more about her Canadian charts than I do  :P Your insight is prolly better than mine ^_^ I had no idea Golden debuted in the Top 40 in Canada! That's better than I'd expected. My feeling is, yes, Disco will outpeak Golden. Maybe I'm hanging too much hope on the iTunes global #1s she's scoring, but it feels like the Disco era is starting off stronger than Golden, even beyond UK/Aus.

Yes I also think a Top 40 debut on the Billboard 200 is possible this time around
