Since when did the charts represent what's going on in music right now? Music is so much more than what is sold on iTunes. It's a thriving, amazing place where bands and individuals all over the world make music that doesn't even get recorded. The charts, especially the singles chart are a barometer of what sells combined with the factor of effective promotion.

Almost any song that has been number 1 before would be number 1 again if given the huge television exposure of reality tv - would anyone agree with this statement?

It seems to me that it would be easier to pick out number 1s from the past that would STILL be a hit now rather than vice versa.

I agree but very very few if any artists don't go through a stale period and most trundle on through it for the rest of their careers.

If it's any consolation for Rihanna to even be the SECOND most successful female ever in the UK is an astonishing achievement considering how long she's been around for.
