  1. Hmm... can't say there's too many outstanding songs on this album for me. Considering the hype, I feel many people are just lost in anticipation, when you strip back the fact it's Katy and we all love her.. it's very much a solid sophomore effort but very little new ground has been covered, and occasionally that ground, well, it's covered in dog $h!t. 'Teenage Dream'. Brilliant. Should've been the first single, it shows Katy's non-auto-tuned voice off to it's maximum, returning her to her pop/rock roots. I hugely appelaing song many can relate to. With a massive chorus and more hooks than backstage at London fashion week, this is a bonefide summer anthem. 'Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)', well it's pleasing enough, loses a bit of the Katy charm we hear on 'Teenage Dream', but none-the-less, in definitely not a filler, more a pleasant, 'Bridge The Gap' to other songs; it's decent enough but nothing to write home about. 'California Gurls' sounds so forced she makes fun look as laborious as listening to paint dry. It's fun and party party party and all but, it just doesn't do much for me, not very credible, which is annoying seeing as it's Katy. Snoop Dogg can go shove it as well, he's not needed in the song at all. 'Firework', is pure, unabashed brilliance. Euphoric, eclectic, filled to the brim with hooks (both musical and vocal), it soars through a monolithic production with one of Katy's biggest vocal performances to date. Loving the strings, the stomping chorus and the fact it's the next single. Very good choice. 'Peacock'. Katy's rather suggestive 'Peacock' seems fun enough, with plenty of innuendos and controversy but unfortunately, it's about as useful as a condom machine in a monastery: it does nothing for the album and is so relentlessly unforgiving it just comes across as an offensive filler. 'Circle The Drain' Interesting concept but sorry Tyler, this is tragic. Katy may don a super-sexy alpha-female character but the profanity is unecessary - as it is on all pop records - and the over-use of auto-tune runs what the song had going for it straight into the ground. 'The One That Got Away' is one of the few love songs on this album that come across as properly heartfelt and credible. Only one quip with this song - the drums could be a little less militant, but otherwise, the chorus is perfect and Katy's vocals carry the emotion fantastically thanks the the lack of auto-tune. E.T. (Futuristic Lover) is a puzzling one. Everyone hails it as the best thing since viagra but really? It's a very middle-of-the-road song with dreary verses and a chorus that, two seconds in, sounds amazing, then after the retriggering on Katy's vocals, it falls flat on it's face really. Monotonously sung (obviously to capture the song itself) but it just goes nowhere, and the most annyoing thing is, there's about 20 places in the song where it sounds like it's finally going to give that OOPMH, but it doesn't. 'Who Am I Living For?' is another obvious filler. Where is the chorus? It goes straight into it without so much as an extra guitar or synth. It's incredibly dull. Can't fault Katy's vocal's on this though, but it does sound like she's over-singing y'know? Like she knows the backing is so weak she's relying on her voice to inject some life into it? 'Flogging', 'Horse' and 'Dead' are three words that spring to mind. 'Pearl' is another peculiar one. The lyrics shine out as far more sophisticated than any other song on the album. It's a well-constructed ballad, but it doesn't have... that something... It relies on the (quite frankly) stunning lyrics and Katy's vocal performance to carry it's baggage. It lacks any memorable hook, and the backing could very easily go with any of the other fillers on the album. That aside, Katy's vocals actually do carry the song very well; this is easily one of the more listenable ballads. 'Hummingbird Heartbeat' has only one fault - it's Track 11. A track this bombastic and confident should be right up there with the likes of 'Teenage Dream', 'California Gurls', and 'Firework', and 'Last Friday Night T.G.I.F.' should be relegated to penultimate position. Rocky guitar, sweet lyrics.. it shouldn't work but it does... this is easily one the album's very few tracks to literally shout home about. 'Not Like The Movies' certainly earns it's place as the album's closer. Another heartfelt ballad, it's very wishy-washy and has some flawlessly beautiful lyrics, but we've now heard it all before - and not just elsewhere in pop music: elsewhere on this very album. From an album that's had so much hype, it rarely manages to deliver the goods, well, to these ears anyway, and I'm no music snob I'll tell you now. It just feels like only a third of the album tracks are really credible and even fewer could make it as hit singles. Katy's already released two of those, and she's eyeing up the third, there's really only one or two more tracks she can milk from an album that's so unfortunately average. She's hasn't advanced forward, 'Teenage Dream' feels like 'One Of The Boys 2.0'; she rarely tries something new - sure she's made a few electropop stompers and that's all god and up-to-date and all but, now that everyone's doing electropop, she needs to add her own stamp to all of the tracks, and a few innuendos and naughty words isn't going to cut the mustard. My Album rating: 6.7/10

    'Hands'... NOM NOM
  3. How can they do this? Surely if Michael Jackson didn't release them in the 'Bad' era, he has his reasons? What makes them think he'd want them released now? Scummy money-wh0res.
  4. Thanks very much. :)
  5. How do I get the album converted from .rar into .mp3? And what is WinRar?
  6. I'M STILL WAITING FOR MY LINK. MP3 GOODNESS PLEASE. ta.

Simple lyrics!? "She's the kind of girl you read about/In magazines/Glossy magazines" is a simple lyric. In fact, it's $h!t lyric. "I'm in pieces/It's seems like peace is/The only thing I'll never know" is a very good pop lyric - notice the internal rhyme?
  8. 'Invisible Light' is the best thing they've ever recorded, but surely even 'Any Which Way' is more commercial? The title track would've made as good second single as well as 'Skin Tight', which I don't see as similar to 'Fire With Fire' at all :/
  9. You see, I think it's the video that's going to buoy this single. The track itself works brilliantly on the album but as a single I just don't see it. But I do agree in that Universal must think this album has far less commercial songs on it, resulting in them making the Scissor Sisters add a more commercial track ('Fire With Fire') toward the end of the writing process.

They re-recorded the track and changed quite a few of the lyrics. They then worked with Guy Chambers to reproduce what was your typical boyband song that I described so eloquently above, and changed it into something a little more unique in terms of balladry. Believe it or not, The Wanted boys actually have a lot more say in the stuff they sing than many people think. But I will not defend the fact that 'All Time Low' was simply given to them by Ed Drewett (who, incidentally has a new single out in November - 'Champagne Lemonade'). Oddly, whilst I still like it - I see 'All Time Low' as one of their wekaer songs. I'll be interested to hear this 'Lose My Mind' David was talking about, because as of now, I have only heard four soungs from them - 'All Time Low', 'Heart Vacancy', 'Behind Bars', and 'Let's Get Ugly'. The latter three are all kinds of amazing.
  11. :D:D I LOVE YOU.

  14. Is there going to another chance to vote? Maybe for female solo artists?
  15. Woops... They sounded exactly the same to me! :L Anyhoo, yeah I agree, they are definitely picking up new fans now that they seem to have grown up a bit from their soft rock/pop rock roots.

She's actually - to most people's surprise - a brilliant live vocalist, with high energy dance routines to boot! I'm behind her 100% on this song, it's a fantastic comeback from a brilliant personality. I wish her all the best with this song.
  17. Personally, I was furious about this release - it was obviously going to be a single, as it's the one they tend to play live in their intimate gigs along with 'Fire With Fire', 'Skin Tight' and older tracks, but I just didn't see it as the second single, y'know? More like a fourth single. 'Skin Tight' is the most commercial track left on the album, despite 'Night Work' being full to the brim swith A-Grade songs. I don't think 'Any Which Way' is going to out-peak the criminal underperformace of 'Fire With Fire' at all: it's nowhere near commercial enough. I also think the title track, 'Night Work' would work well as a single, as it's basically about going out and forgetting your troubles - shallow, but that kind of lightweight lyricism sells hugely when it's sung by some fogettable knobhead like Taio Cruz. The video is available on YouTube already, I can't post it because BuzzJack thinks I may be a computer. Joy. Could someone who's posted more than 20 comments put the link for the VEVO video up please? Danke. After seeing the video, and hearing the edit, I can see the song performing better, so maybe it could possibly out-peak 'Fire With Fire'? Your thoughts on the release of 'Any Which Way'?

The week of September 6th has huge competition, and Christina Aguilera was right to postpone the release of the lacklustre 'You Lost Me' by two weeks (it was roginally going to be released on September 6). Unusually, Alexandra Burke's label postponed the release of 'Start Without You' by two weeks aswell, resulting in it ultimately being released on the same date there is huge competition for #1. So that leaves, Alesha, McFly, The Script and Alexandra Burke fighting for #1, each song is as credible as each other in the competition for #1, and it may be the first week in a long time, where I can relax, knowing that a decent song will top the charts. Of course, Justin Boobface is releasing fourth single from his début LP 'My World', called 'U Smile' (and it's all kinds of crap) so maybe some ten year old girls will go downloading it in the same fashion The Saturdays' fans are downloading 'Missing You'. There's very little competition from Robyn and 'Hang With Me', despite it being on the right side of listenable, and as for Goldfrapp and 'Believer'... well, the two stand-out tracks have already been released from what must be their most commerical album to date - 'Head First' - and they've flopped badly. Mind you, Goldfrapp always been album sellers rather than single sellers, so I doubt they'll be any sign of 'Believer' on the official chart, leaving the top spot open to the big dogs alone. Taio Cruz is like Jay Sean (on levels other than the fact they're both absolutely sh*te), in that America has taken to them a lot better than us Brits have, despite them both being British artists, so he's sold quite healthily over the other side of the pond. Considering the obscene "OMG GOSSIP GOSSIP GOSSIP" nature of the tabloids following Joe being outed, whilst he may not be the talk of the town, he certainly hasn't faded into obscurity just yet. People forget that this happened with Leona, Alexandra, Diana etc, etc. before they came back with huge #1 singles; everyone thought they were unimportant until September/November time, when they came back with their 'début' singles.

Klaxons aren't going anywhere near the top, they never do, and it's a great shame because they make great music and are hugely talented, but the thing with 'Echoes' is, it sounds unmistakably similar to a Groove Armada track from a few years back... Am I the only who thought this was released on July 19? I'm sure Digital Spy and the like confirmed it's release was around then. and I'm sorry, but in my personal opinion this track is a carbon copy of 'Hot'. I don't get why the hell everyone is singing her praises because every song she does is built around the same kind of electronic panpipe riff with a few differing notes each time. I just don't get why people think she's the next best European smash because all her songs sound exactly the same. I like 'Amazing' more than 'Hot' anyway so if I had to choose, I'd hope 'Amazing' does better then her last single.
  20. Hmmm... I really can't get into 'Circle The Drain'... way too much auto-tune for such an able singer. However... 'Firework' screams "hit single!" right from the off with is huge strings and massive production that strangley manages to sound very 80's, 90's AND 00's too. Can't wait for that, much better than the suggestive and rather lukewarm 'Peacock'.
  21. The Saturdays needed a better song than this. If they're looking to reap more sales after the dissappointing performance of 'Wordshaker' (which could've been sorted if they released 'One Shot'). This is just going to be another song to add to the ridiculous pile of absolute drivel that's made #1 this year. It's by no means a bad pop song, it's just very flaccid. And they needed something with more staying power than this, because 'Missing You' will not sell the album. I reckon it'll be beaten by Flo Rida and David Guetta, at least it's sales are consistant.

I'm dubious about 'Teenage Dream'. It seems Capitol have been very careless about the UK release and stumbled into overtime - they originally planned the released of 'Teenage Dream' to be before the album, but now, they've let things lapse over and they're being forced to release both single and album on the same day. From past experiences, this has always hindered a single's chart peak, and it doesn't help that the album and single have the exact same title. That aside, I expect Roll Deep will be #1 next week, but I don't really care about any week (because the good songs will be dwarfed by the more easily digestible rubbish) until the week beginning September 6, because that's going to be a very interesting week, with four huge contenders for the top spot. In fact, I reckon there could be and entirely new Top 3 that week.
  24. I confess, I'm loving their new sound. Wasn't too sure at first, and it looked like their long-time fans turned their noses up at first aswell, but if they keep up the promotion, this could be a huge turn in musical direction for the better. People are saying they've sold out by going electro, but they're clearly still playing their instruments and and giving rockier, live performances now - quite a far cry from 'Five Colours In Her Hair' and 'Thunderbirds Are Go'. If you ask me, they're not selling out - they're staying relevant; they're now going to appeal to a huge new demographic because electropop/dance music is what's 'hot' now.
  25. I know! Not to mention they're all huge comeback singles... If you ask me, McFly, Alesha, and The Script are all receiving quite a bit of promotion already - all three are C-Listed on Radio 1, and the video for 'Drummer Boy' is creating plenty of hype and exposure. On top of that, McFly have just performed 'Party Girl' on Magic Numbers and they shut the place down! It was a truly electrifying performance and as it was a rockier version of the song I must confess it's only going to boost it's appeal.
