Number two for the year and the number one mainstream hit - it is of course the year's biggest UK dance hit and a very deserved huge smash for Calvin Harris. Teaming with Ellie Goulding for the third time, their effort proved to be even better than their first two. It was of course very exciting that Calvin ended up starting the classic trance revival with this which was a very well done tribute to that late 90s era. The piano riff is heaven, the organ intro is a lovely start and the breakbeat outro is a great unexpected addition. Ellie's vocal is of course perfect for this song too, Calvin himself said he wouldn't have chose anyone else for it. The song is his second song to finish 2nd in the EOY chart (his peak here) following 'One Kiss' in 2018.

Therefore it is congratulations to Ram & Cari whose 'What Matters' was my favourite single release of 2023! It is perhaps surprisingly the first ever trance hit to reach the year-end #1 spot but very deservingly so. The track steadily grew upon its release before it ended up with the longest run at #1 in the year. It was also a success in BJSC finishing in the top 10. The song is a big emotional uplifting anthem, inspired by Ram's travels around the world. The energy picks up fairly quickly assisting with the build-up before a more vocal texture focused section. With a beautiful lyrical sentiment and vocal delivery from Cari, followed by the most euphoric drop you can possibly get in trance music. Such a great melody and energy really made this stand out amongst the many average trance efforts, and even for Ram this would be tough to ever get close to matching again. 100 listens later it's a song that still leaves a big impact and a smile on my face so very much a deserving end to this year's review.

Tomcraft hasn’t seen any boost, I think Mason was more lucky that his song got a more prominent placing in the film and I guess TikTok must’ve helped it further since. There were quite a few indie songs played in the film too and none of them have had boosts (besides Mr Brightside which was going to always be in the chart anyway).

Last year Ava Max won for a second year running with a little assistance from Tiësto. She sadly won't make it five years running in the top three however as she failed to have any hits in 2023.

A house bootleg to start off the top 5, which got popular off the luck of the Spotify algorithm as far as I can tell, now surpassing 10m streams. Selker is a Liverpool DJ who sped and pitched up a fairly obscure 90s house track by Charlene Smith and then releasing it under his own name. Questionable ethics aside, it was great to see this tune get unearthed and it works really well in modern day for a classic house throwback, and having become used to this version the original seems oddly slow by comparison.

2022: Tim Green is one of the leading producers in a melodic house sub-genre called "organic house" - not a sub-genre I knew too much about or had that much interest in from what I'd heard as for the most part it seemed long and boring. Well this song is at least one of those things, with a runtime of 11:38 and perhaps what is the longest wait in a song for the first verse which comes in just past the six minute mark. I was immediately intrigued from the first play however with its piano intro. The whole thing is just a vibe with its percussion, vocals and atmosphere. Beautiful.

This seems like a once in a career moment for Tim Green as he's gone back to his usual vibe this year so has yet to have a follow up hit. It remains a really impressive piece anyhow that held up immensely including a second run at the top following its BJSC appearance.

Another 90s house inspired track now although it's an original song this time, and getting bronze medal for the year of 2023 is also the year's biggest breakthrough hit. Originally found through the Spotify algorithm in the form of the Catz 'n Dogz remix which was enough in itself to give the song a top 3 peak, I eventually checked the original version and ended up liking it even more. Myst Milano is a Canadian rapper/DJ/producer whose 'No Shade' was influenced by the ballroom/vogue scene - self-released in 2021 before being picked up by Defected the following year. The song is such a fun bit of hip-house, with a very catchy attitude-filled hook, that we don't get all too often these days which kept the replay value high. Unfortunately the BJSC voters didn't seem to agree as it was a very unjust DNQ in the contest!!

It wasn’t a hit single but one of my absolute favourite dance tracks of the 00s was a track by Masters At Work titled ‘Work’ as remixed in 2007 and featured on a Clubland compilation. Giving it a modern update for the current decade was very much welcome then which is what Kevin McKay did giving it tech house production alongside re-using the song’s original vocalists. It’s a very fun track assisted by its demanding vocal and driving percussion-led production.

2016: We got the return of house legend Armand Van Helden this year, and what a comeback he made giving us the brilliant 'Wings', based around a sample of 'I Won't Let You Down' (not the Rita Ora song). I did laugh at some uneducated people in the YouTube comments section thinking this was an Armin van Buuren and Oliver Heldens collab project, like how do people not know of AvH? laugh.gif It's just a great throwback house tune, very refreshing amongst all the other producers trying to stay on trend just to get a good old classic housey sample-based banger.

 

Well who’d have thought eh, for whatever reason ‘Wings’ got a vocal re-do with Karen Harding over a half-decade later… and it actually vastly improved the song! The production here still sounds very suited to current-day with its retro house inspiration, with Karen giving a great vocal performance which makes the song feel complete.

The second-biggest UK hit in this countdown, this rightfully became the big breakthrough for Peggy Gou (after having already had big cult hits with ‘Starry Night’ and ‘I Go’). With an irresistibly catchy hook and 90s vibe (inspiration particularly taken from ‘Rhythm Is A Dancer’ and ‘9PM’), it was undeniably the sound of the summer this year. The winter follow-up was sadly a disappointment but hopefully we get something with a similar vibe for summer ’24.

2022: The word anthemic gets thrown around often but this song is the true meaning of it. Although not having been taken as a single bizarrely, it made an instant great impression upon the album release, later peaking at #2... then going all the way to #1 after the 2022 tracking period had ended - so expect this to be rather high up 2023's EOY chart too! I of course saved the song for BJSC 150 where it gave me my sole top five finish of the year. With huge synths all-throughout, an excellent tension building in the middle, alongside Grum's own vocals giving a great catchy hook.

This one is a strong contender for tune of the decade now, and would’ve easily been #1 if the year began in July! It is just an incredible piece of dance music. I expect we will get some new music from Grum in 2024 and if it’s even half as good as this I’ll be excited for it.

The instant highlight of the Grandbrothers album once it got released, so like the Grum song at #7 it was quite baffling that this wasn’t chosen as one of the pre-album releases. It’s one of the more danceable pieces on an otherwise mostly ambient album anyhow, so alongside the great piano compositional work here it makes for a highly replayable piece. Whilst it doesn’t quite top their year-end chart topper ‘What We See’, it comes closer than I’d have ever expected from them so well played here. It’s quite amazing what they can produce out of just manipulating piano recordings.

Nice to see Adore U pop up, one of my favourite songs to crack the charts this year. Something On My Mind was indeed an interesting crossover between artists which I got into a little bit after enjoying Overcome by Nothing But Thieves this year. And Lonely was a decent BJSC track as well!

'DNA' is my favourite since I last commented - it's topped off the trance revival in the charts of 2023 nicely that an actual trance producer has a Top 10 hit to start 2024! 'Live Without Love' and 'CHILDREN' (hadn't thought about the key change) are great too.

One of as many as six BJSC entries of mine to land in the Hottest 20 now, this became the breakthrough and so far only hit for L.A.-based producer Nosaj Thing which led his most recent album, although I discovered it from a luck of the Spotify algorithm during one of my searches for new music. It instantly stood out with its sample of the percussion from Massive Attack’s ‘Teardrop’ and creates a lush soundscape around it.

Another that I sent to BJSC now, and in a first it is an instrumental piano solo piece. A beautiful composition that had been in the works for many years, it led an EP of piano solos by the musician best known otherwise for melodic/organic house. This was very much the standout of the work though being a very comforting and emotional piece with a fair amount of variation throughout its 8-minute runtime. It follows his appearance in last year’s Hottest 10 with the ‘Cloudline’ remix, though I think it’s even more impressive that he was able to make something like this hold up so well with repeat listens. It’s also a piece that I wish to be able to perfect myself as a pianist.

Leading their album campaign Anamē only went and put out one of the best melodic house tracks in recent memory, which gave them an instant #1 hit. The emotive vocal and warming production compliment the sentiment of the lyrics very well. The duo wanted to prioritise the songwriting here over making a club-tailored record which often has great results such as this.

After three very emotional tracks we now round the section out with another straight-up club banger. Serving as the breakthrough for Dutch producer Jengi the track went viral toward the end of 2022 and reached the bottom end of the UK chart, though passing a very healthy 100m Spotify total within 2023. It’s a song you either love or hate with its shouty vocal sample and rather unique bass-driven house beat. I of course was all over this though.

Another nu-disco effort now with a bit of a synthwave aesthetic. It became the breakthrough for French producer Carl Chaste with some assistance from The Magician. Having him get another big hit here was sure unexpected as it's been a near-decade since 'Sunlight'. It's a rather intriguing track with a deep-voiced spoken male vocal duetting the more pleasant vocal of Owlle.

As one of my favourite trance classics I was cautiously optimistic for what a dance-pop remake of 'Ayla' would bring, however Alok & Ava stuck to the brief and did it justice. A suitably upbeat track that only relies on the sample for as long as it needs to making it a great track in its own right, it became the worthy follow-up to last year's 'Deep Down' which landed in a similar position in last year's chart. It is also well done to Raye and Oliver Heldens who were also involved in the song's making having not made this year's top 20 with anything of their own.

Grabbing his biggest hit in this chart well over a decade since his one commercial hit song was another big surprise this year for Mason. It's the third disco revival track in the top 20 so far so that genre was clearly in this year. This more than anything else though has the real feel of an disco record with its vocals, strings and piano solo, with Mason having been fortunate enough to have been given instrumental stems from an old record label to make up a new song with.

2022: Monocule is the progressive house alias of Nicky Romero, and the new direction here is much more suited to my current music taste as it scored him his first top five hit since 2014. If you like CamelPhat, then I'd recommend giving this a listen. It's also much-helped by the vocal of Leo Stannard who is becoming somewhat prominent in dance music guest vocals now.

So this track continued a very impressive run into 2023, although it remains a one-off for Nicky Romero at the moment as neither of the follow-ups under the alias hit in the same way. Basically a big fluke of brilliance for him in modern times as it has become one of the best deep progressive tracks of the decade so far.

To celebrate the biggest comeback in EDM of the year for Chase & Status we've put together a list of their most notable releases based on chart and streaming success.

 

Three songs out this time due to a tie so we say goodbye to a good chunk of their 'No More Idols' album (which did provide the bulk of their hits with 7 songs from it making the top 10). 'No Problem' wasn't an official single however it became a fan favourite over the years and boasts a bigger Spotify total than most of the album's other hits - it finishes in 10th. 'Time' which introduced English singer songwriter Delilah and was the biggest of two hits she had is in 8th. Tied with it is the more hip-hop influenced 'Hitz' which guested one of the biggest rappres of the time Tinie Tempah, although it wasn't that big of a chart smash.
