A great trance song which came 2nd in its yearly round. I was pleasantly surprised to see this go straight through! As the title suggests, it has a lot of bongos in it which gives it a lot of uniqueness. This is the only trance song to be in the final 50, however we do have some dance acts coming up (Prodigy, Pendulum, Chase & Status, Calvin Harris)

 

Great to see the fake version of Whistle at #35! Hopefully this means the real version will be a big hit and stop Maroon 5 from getting to #1. (it would be funny to see them have another #2 :kink:)

OK, I'm not a big fan of this version of the song. I heard the Annie Lennox cover of this a lot before finally getting round to hearing the original, and imo Annie Lennox >>>> Ash. But there were enough fans of this to get it straight through to the finals. It came 3rd in the yearly rounds but finishes the lowest out of the 4 songs of 2001 that feature in this countdown.

Starting off the countdown is the Scissor Sisters' second top ten hit, and only entry on the chart. This came 3rd in the 2005 round, however it is the lowest of the 6 songs from the year to chart. The Sisters are still around today, their new album Magic Hour was #3 on Radio 1's Midweek Update and their Calvin Harris produced single Only The Horses is still in the T40. Calvin Harris will be in this chart with "Acceptable In The 80s". Onto the song itself, it is one of my least favourite of their big singles, however I do like it. It sounds very disco, with some guitars thrown in the chorus, which isn't a bad thing as it made the SS very unique. If only the UK public got "Laura" into the top 10, now that was a great song.

It's not as good as his previous singles. I was expecting more from a Calvin & Example combo. :( I'm not sure if this will even hit #2, Example has proved many times that his name can't sell anything (having flopped at #39 with Flux Pavilion on Daydreamer)

You have a strange definintion of 'solo credit' then. :huh:

 

To me, it means one person have a #1 hit in their own name, with no featured artist(s).

 

Solo credit, to me, means that you get credited as a solo artist instead of being part of a group.

 

For example, all of Take That have been to #1 but only Gary Barlow and Robbie Williams have had a solo credit at #1 (it does help that they didn't have featured artists)

 

Cascada got a #1 with Evacuate The Dancefloor, but Yanou of Cascada got a credit at #1 (ie. have his name on the track and not be part of a group) back in 2002 with DJ Sammy.

I haven't heard this song yet, but I think it'll flop like every other Cascada song 2010 onwards.

 

Did anyone know that two of the members of Cascada got a top 40 hit earlier this year? R.I.O. (Cascada without the female singer) got "Turn This Club Around" to #36, with the help of U-Jean on vocals.

 

Plus Bre is right. The only member of Cascada to have a solo credit at #1 is Yanou. He went to #1 with DJ Sammy and Do on "Heaven". The other members (DJ Manian and Natalie Horler) haven't ever had a solo top 75 hit.

The top 9 this week is EXACTLY the same as last weeks top 9 :manson: How BORING! :drama: Great to see Rihanna just outside the top 10 (surely she'll get in next week, as Phillip Phillips won't have any staying power) and Pitbull in the top 15 :D Ellie Goulding still climbing :o

I've just found out this *isn't* another Eurovision song - most confusing when European artists randomly release songs here immediately after Eurovision. :P

 

Sebastian Ingrosso and Alesso are both Swedish :heart: What a great week for the Swedes, with this going top 20 and Loreen going top 3 :yahoo: I would probably die of excitement if Sebastian Ingrosso (or any good Swedish house DJ) represented Eurovision for Sweden, but that probably isn't happening anytime soon :lol: as they are doing very well with dance-pop singers such as Loreen and Eric Saade.

Azealia Banks is American, but I do think she could do well with the right follow-up single.

 

:lol: didn't realise that. It's not often that we get American artists that aren't big there, so I assumed she was British. I think there's a lot of life left in her, "212" is such a brilliant debut, the hits can't just stop there.

2012 has been a big year for artists coming out of nowhere to have a hit. Does the future look good for any of them? Here are some examples

 

Rita Ora - Recently she hit #1 with "Hot Right Now" and "R.I.P." and I think with the right single choices she could be big and have a lasting career. I can't see her next single doing terribly to be honest.

 

fun. - They are currently the UK's official #1 with "We Are Young". I think they've got another top 40 in them but it won't be massive like WAY.

 

Carly Rae Jepsen - If she releases a new single soon I think it could go top 10. It's hard to call because "Call Me Maybe" screamed one-hit wonder, but so did "Pon de Replay" and "I Kissed A Girl" and look at how big RiRi and Katy are today.

 

Gotye - His next single should get a little Radio 2 support but won't do much chart wise. STIUTK will probably be the biggest selling one-hit wonder that isn't charity related, as I can't see him having another T40.

 

Alex Clare - "Too Close" was lucky to be featured on that advert and become a hit that way, so I don't think his next single will do that much.

 

Azealia Banks - It's been a long time since "212" but I think with the right songs she could be the new Nicki Minaj.

 

Conor Maynard - His next single and debut album should both go top 10 I think, he won't last long after that however.

 

Discuss new artists you think have a future in them and ones that will be forgotten by this time next year.

This is like Justin's 4th chart hit in under 2 months :drama: and people complained about Rihanna releasing singles too often :lol:

How is it different from hundreds of other insipid urban ballads?

 

Rudimental is not urban, it is drum n' bass. The beat and production is very unique and it's not often that we get these types of songs anywhere near the top. I also love the trumpet solo in the middle of the song :heart: Rudimental will hopefully be the first non-DJ Fresh act to get a drum n' bass song to #1 :yahoo:

Yes Rudimental! :wub: Get that #1 SMASH! One of the best drum n' bass songs to come out. I knew it would go top 10 but I thought #1 was too good to be true! If only Loreen and Rudimental could both be massive #1s as they are both amazing. Anyway, Gary Barlow doesn't have a lot of chance now. Rudimental should get a nice lead, plus he has EP sales and he was released a day before Sing.

OMG :wub: this is the most amazing top 2 that I have ever seen in a LONG TIME. What a shame Gary Barlow's gonna come and ruin things :angry: I wouldn't mind if Rudimental overtook Loreen on iTunes, so they can get a good lead and stop Barlow from being #1. Loreen should go top 5 this week which is a great achievement for her.

 

I guess the top 5 at the end of the week will go like this

Also great to see Sebastian Ingrosso & Alesso in the top 40, it will be the first solo hit for Sebastian and the first hit at all for Alesso.

It's Loreen, winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2012. She represented Sweden and got over 370 points :wub: It's an amazing song and it deserved to win! :D
