How many streams equals one download sale? 100 plays if you are on Spotify Premium, or 600 if you are using the ad-supported free tier. However you cannot simply play a song that many times in one day to give it one sale, you are limited to 10 plays per day in terms of what counts to the chart. Hot Hits UK is the biggest of these playlists on Spotify from a UK standpoint. The playlist usually updates itself to include breaking hits once or twice a week, though there is no guarantee that your fave will get a place on the playlist. Also, the UK Top 50 is a largely followed playlist and that songs often experience a 'top 50 effect', when they enter the top 50 and get the additional exposure of being on the playlist. Often sales hits don't cross over to being streaming hits, this is usually the case for songs with an older target audience, reality or campaign songs. Also keep in mind that it often takes longer for a song to take off on Spotify than it would on iTunes. My fave didn't debut high and is falling already, does this mean they're flopping? How about another big tumble from the top five to start off with? Losing a fair amount of support this year we have The Weeknd & Ariana's duet 'Save Your Tears' which is down to 30th after spending three straight years as a contender. It doesn't help that more recent material from Abel hasn't been quite so well received perhaps. We have quite a few gains in this section to make up for it however. Firstly completing their decade we have Mark & Bruno with one of the biggest hit singles of all time in 'Uptown Funk', a song that like with Hozier's in the last section really should've been placed in 2014 but precedent had allowed it to be delayed a year. It is the third year it has placed in the top 40 so pleasingly leaves out on a high. An indie fan fave is up next being the major breakthrough hit for Irish band Fontaines D.C. - 'Starburster' led their fourth and most successful album to date and was influenced by 90s trip-hop. Even more impressively up next we have a huge rebound for Avicii & Rita Ora - it is the first top 40 appearance for 'Lonely Together' which was the last hit Avicii had in his lifetime, leading his self-titled EP originally to be the first in a series of three before the idea was canned after his untimely passing. Perhaps a similar boost could be to come for Rita's other hit of 2017? Meanwhile Buzzjack has a new favourite Taylor Swift song. It's 'Anti-Hero', hi. The Zara Larsson new album effect gave 'Lush Life' a boost earlier on and this now extends to Clean Bandit collab 'Symphony', now spending a third year in the top 40. Likewise, Sam Fender's album impact gives 'Seventeen Going Under' a huge boost, now reaching a new peak in the top 40 for the first time. Some more dance efforts appear in this section with David Guetta's 'I'm Good' holding up well after its big second-year boost plus Gaga's 'Rain On Me' remaining her top hit. Here's another big surprise for you all - dropping off from last year's bronze position we have Billie Eilish starting off the top 40 with 'Everything I Wanted', a song that clearly had a lot of indie support which has now faded. It remains the top-rated of her catalogue to date. However bypassing the general indie dropoff we do have Tame Impala climb a position to finish out on a high with psychedelic-rock tune 'Let It Happen'. Perhaps assisted by the release of new material in the year, this song proved to be a big sleeper hit only being first nominated in its fourth year after release. 'Dracula' could perhaps return him to the countdown next year? Inbetween, it's a great year for Little Mix with their two most-rated efforts in 'Touch' and 'Sweet Melody' climbing in to finish on the same points total. Mark Ronson and Miley Cyrus also have their first of two appearances each with one of 2018's very best pop songs 'Nothing Breaks Like A Heart'. Years & Years complete a whole decade in this rundown with their biggest hit in 'King' placing in the top 40 for a fourth and final time. Ever since the band turned into the lead singer's solo project the music quality hasn't been as great so it may well be the last time we see Olly in this list. As the biggest hit and forum fave from her latest album, 'We can't be friends' enters at a respectable 34th for Ariana, proof if ever is needed that synthpop is key for Lady Buzzjack's heart. Hozier rounds out the decade with breakthrough megasmash 'Take Me To Church', which has performed significantly better in the latter half having spent the last five years in the top 40. He could always be back next year with 'Too Sweet' though that didn't do quite enough this time. The Harry Styles fandom continues to grow with his first solo release 'Sign of the Times' now outdoing itself to place top 40 with his bigger hit still to place. Meanwhile having a very good end to their run are the Chemical Brothers, whose 'Go' took the best part of a decade to get going but now leaves us with a top 40 finish. It is followed by her biggest streaming hit to date 'Cruel Summer' which likewise shot up the rankings ever since it had a very belated single treatment that followed its Eras tour boosted vitality. Holding up decently is the second of the Wolf Alice tracks, 'Don't Delete The Kisses' managed to climb into the top 40 last year and isn't hit so hard by key indie voters leaving perhaps as it was the biggest commercial hit of their career so far. It has been a great year for Adele as she remains on break from music, her most recent album lead 'Easy On Me' climbs into the main countdown for the first time shooting straight into the top half. The song remains the biggest first-week streaming hit ever four years on from its release. Once a contender for Buzzjack's favourite of the decade, Ariana scales back to 45th with 'One Last Time'.
