UK Local Elections 2025
It feels like Nottinghamshire will go into No Overall Control this time, with the talk being the most likely leadership outcome is Reform (as the largest party) leading a coalition with the tories. I thought for a while that no party would come close to a majority but it's only recently the realisation that Reform will likely be the largest party, rather than have simply having a significant amount (10-12) of councillors in opposition. It's an interesting place with such a wide variety of demographics and voters. In General Elections the patten has been of safe tory seats now being comfortable Labour (Rushcliffe was Ken Clarke's seat fgs) and vice versa with tories sweeping the northern working class towns with more deprivation (Ashfield, Mansfield, Bassetlaw) with huge majorities. It felt like moves back to Labour last year were reluctant. Council-wise, Conservatives have a wafer thin majority and aren't popular anywhere, will keep 10-15 seats in some old rural safe seats across the county, don't see them getting to 20. Labour start on the back foot as they've completely messed up bankrupting Nottingham City Council, and people now have less trust with the national parties current local government Reform act of creating unitary authorities, and the places most likely to vote Labour (West Bridgford, Gedling, Broxtowe) border the city and do not want to join the city council. I don't see them improving much (if at all) on their 14 current seats. The big question is what happens in Ashfield. For the last couple of elections, the Ashfield Independents have dominated, winning 10/10 seats in 2021. Led by the somewhat controversial Jason Zadrozny, they hoover up support from all over the place, but are fundamentally tories where in a place where tories couldn't ever actually win. Ordinarily I'd expect there to be no (or at least very little) change but Asfield is of course the seat of Lee Anderson, who continues to be popular amongst the population who vote for him, so Reform could possibly make significant inroads there. So, what of Reform? Outside of Ashfield they polled at 15-25% of the vote consistently in the other consistuencies at the GE last year, a bit of the national swelling of that vote coming their way and they'll comfortably hit the number of seats Labour and Conservatives do. I think 5-7 in both Mansfield and Bassetlaw, 1-2 in each of Gedling, Broxtowe and Newark & Sherwood. Ashfield? Well as we'd say round here, it could be owt. What will they do in charge of a council? Well there's only so much anyone can do with a county council, given how few services they're actually responsible and how much of it is statutory within social care. Locally, so much has been outsourced to joint venture type deals too. They've said money was wasted on the new HQ, council tax bills are too high and want to lower them, there will be the standard DOGE style audit to remove pointless jobs and waste (hi Equality Officer), the roads are terrible and brought back in house, and Nigel Farage was at an event last week with Anderson stating too many work from home and Reform will get everyone back into the office. I've worked at the organisation since 2012, for at least 70% of the time I've been here there's been active searching for ways to save money and cut waste, so I'm not sure how successful that cam be. As for office working, it really was quite a progressive organisation (for the public sector at least) in terms of flexibility, staff were enabled to work from home and office space reduced long before Covid and home working became common. They won't get staff back to the office en masse without paying significant amounts to improve offices and increase capacity, not that there's anywhere to park, which somewhat goes against their slashing costs and bills mantra. Theleaflet I got from them talked about infrequent bin collections, not a county council service so nothing they can actually do, but from experience it would appear that looking incompetent and taking voters for idiots is quite common amongst all parties in 2 tier areas.

Round 4: Ultimate Survivor #11
6 great songs to varying degrees, and Avril Lavigne... suspect I'll be voting it for a few rounds.

• BJSC 174 • CONFIRMATIONS • DEADLINE SATURDAY 12.04.25 - 23:59 •
I made a return as I had a specific song I wanted to enter, but was already taken. TBF I found it in @Doctor Blind personal chart so I hope it's the Cumulonimbia entry. I might enter something else instead, but might not bother.

Man United Supporters Thread Pt.II
After half the side had played 120 minutes on Saturday and losing a key player in the first half it was pretty much the perfect performance from Forest, and exactly how youd expect a game to play out after taking an early lead. Man Utd had more chances, but apart from a couple of long range efforts the only real threat came from sticking Harry Maguire up front, which is embarrassing. It was amusing to see how rattled their midfield got, Casemiro could definitely have been off with a different ref too.

Self Esteem and Slushy Nothing I'm overly bothered about this week, weak ones for Black Honey and Lucy Dacus standards.

2025 Formula One Season
Well I'd suggest careers with significant length whilst having 100% record over their teammates since leaving is just fine personally, it'll be nice to see Albon in a more competitive car which Williams have hopefully given this season. As for not being in a top seat, they're just really difficult to come by, particularly in the driver-academisation era - Hamilton, Russell and Antonelli have taken the only three opportunities which have been available at Ferrari and Mercedes (not that Ferrari's vacancy was really an 'opportunity'). As for Perez, who knows... by the time he was out the entire grid was pretty much filled so hard to judge too much just yet, but does feel like the new team is his only realistic chance, and he was very different to every other driver anyway - his Red Bull stint was seasons 11-14 of his career.

2025 Formula One Season
It feels like Lawson is rated more highly by Red Bull and it's almost protection to but him in VCARB again if they know this car is so bad for him. As for Tsunoda, realistically this is the only chance he's ever going to get to move to a 'top' car (can't see the other three having vacancies for 2+ years and doubt they'd consider him anyway) and if it goes badly for him we're at the point where it isn't actually a hindrance for future career - literally everyone fails eventually in that car and plenty do just fine afterwards.

Premier League 2024/2025
6 wins in a row, 3rd in the league, 6 point gap to 6th place after 20 games. "there's no way they'll stay up there" "they will definitely get found out" "they're not that good, just lucky" *plays Liverpool (1st), Arsenal (2nd), Man City (5th), Brighton (6th), Bournemouth (8th), Newcastle (9th) and Fulham (10th) in the next 8 matches* 3rd in the league, 5 point cushion to 6th place Champions League Reds, it's happening!

Indie/Rock Track of the Week: Week 10
Ghost is comfortably my preference from the rock entries, but once again I don't want to listen to any of those a second time. Black Country New Road ahead of Tennis, but doubt either will be making playlists for the longer-term...

Club Bizarre Vol. 30: ♀🜬 - RESULTS
Comfortably last! I can't say I expected much more for my entry, glad some liked it enough to vote at least, it was a strong field after all! I was listening to Phoebe's songs one afternoon as she was performing at something I was going to, so did a last minute entry for it to see how it went. There were a lot of really good songs in here, really enjoyed all the songs I voted for. The winner was one of only 6 I discarded after my first listen of the playlist ooops Great hosting Kath, really well presented all the way!

Premier League 2024/2025
I think after January's activity there's a transfer ban definitely incoming. A points deduction wouldn't surprise however I think it would be significant but not enough to endanger their PL status. No way they'd re-allocate titles.

What a list that is! Went for Son of Dork, don't really remember the song, just that everything about them was awful. Has to be a clear favourite two for the final.

Premier League 2024/2025
It's difficult to predict with Forest, however I wouldn't be overly confident of our downfall coming. In the first half of the season we were as high as second due to being relentless against the bottom half of the division (9 wins, 1 draw) whilst we struggled against the top half (2W, 3D, 4L), all that's happened so far is that pattern has continued (1W 1D 3L / 2W), but the unfortunate randomness of fixture scheduling has 7 of 8 games against top half teams including 4 in a row against the only 4 to beat us in the first half - Fulham, Newcastle, Arsenal, Man City - but it's feasible we could lose to all those teams again and still be in the Champions League positions after. To be in that position having played the rest of the top 6 twice already can only be one of incredible strength.

Indie Track of the Week
Don't even need to give anything a second listen this week, comfortably Suki Waterhouse. Fontaines is OK but really far from what they're capable of. Everything else too boring or bad rock to make me contemplate hearing it again.

Electronic Track of the Month: January 2025
DJ Heartstring, Ela Minus and Otik for me, though far from a vintage list.
