  1. #25 Kings of Leon Points: 981 Date first charted: 21/01/2008 Number of entries: 16 Total weeks on chart: 123 Most Successful Year: 2008, 20th H1hgRDRc3ug Kings of Leon are definitely a band that got deservedly massive, and I did feel they went rapidly downhill soon after. The beginning of their career was interesting, I tended to like what I heard but not enough to want to buy an album, but both of their first two albums gave them a top 5 and a top 10 hit. It wasn't until the release of Fans, which became their 6th consecutive top 10 hit, that I wanted to investigate further. I bought its parent album Because of the Times which I loved and went backwards, Aha Shake Heartbreak also still sounds amazing and both are amongst my favourites of the decade, with great singles and some of their best ever songs hidden away on the albums - Slow Night, So Long and Knocked Up being the pick of them. Their big breakthrough hits also became their biggest hits for me, it didn't take long to get completely obsessed with Sex on Fire as it peaked at #2, before Use Somebody went one better. They have both no doubt suffered from overplay in the last 15 years, they are both still decent to listen to, Use Somebody in particular, and another of their top tracks in Crawl remained unreleased. Their follow-up album was decent enough and the two big singles are still decent to listen to, but they've very much limped to an end in their second decade, with only a couple of minor hits meaning they never quite hit four figures in points. I don't think I even bothered to listen to anything from their last album in 2021. 2. #26 Biffy Clyro Points: 956 Date first charted: 26/05/2003 Number of entries: 19 Total weeks on chart: 140 Most Successful Year: 2016, 2nd UxUb9Yzr1sE At 26 is the highest placed act not to have had a number one single, Biffy Clyro. They're probably not a band I'd have immediately thought of as being this high, but one who are here due to the volume of hits, with only 7 acts have more entries than their 19. Their early years of limited mainstream recognition were largely ok but nothing I was a huge fan of so an occasional minor hit mirrored their UK chart success, though their best early single by far Justboy predated my chart and would have been a big hit, that and Glitter and Trauma are the only early Biffy songs I ever really still listen to. The continued to release occasional singles I quite liked until the 2010s started with Many of Horror which soon became my favourite of theirs and they finally got a top 10 hit, follow-up Bubbles is a great catchy anthem I'd now rate as their best. Opposites was their first UK number one album but again, contained little I cared for and after a 15 year, 6 album career they'd not really registered that much with me. Then came Wolves of Winter, reminiscent of MOH but better and each single they released of Ellipsis I liked a lot and I actually got into an album of theirs for the first time, which is brilliant and must account for over 50% of my Biffy Clyro listens, Animal Style and Howl are bangers and Re-arrange is a stunning slower tempo song. Since then they've gone back to having sporadic chart entries, often with random releases rather than singles; the lead from their soundtrack album, the standout cover on the Frightened Rabbit celebration and their contribution to the Metallica covers project chart in 2021, though they were unlucky not to have more entries that year as the three singles from the album all bubbled under and I like them more than a lot of songs I have charted, Errors In The History of God in particular. 3. #27 Franz Ferdinand Points: 931 Date first charted: 12/01/2004 Number of entries: 15 Total weeks on chart: 134 Most Successful Year: 2004, 2nd GhCXAiNz9Jo Reaching the UK top 3 at the beginning of 2004, Take Me Out was the beginning of an onslaught on the charts of UK indie bands, and few came close to matching its brilliance, the minute long intro is great and is a fantastic singalong anthem. It was something I loved straight away and debuted at the top, spending 3 weeks there over 2 runs, sandwiching Lostprophets  Following that came a string of excellent singles which all went top 5, each one peaking a position lower than the previous. It's a shame I didn't know Darts of Pleasure at the end of 2003 as that would've made it 5/5. Almost 20 years on, I'd say This Fire is a bit of an anomaly - not up there with the quality of the others. I think their second album is just as good as their first, but they made quite poor choices of single from it, The Fallen is certainly one of their best songs, however was only a AA side with brand new song L Wells, but the others were surpassed by the likes of Outsiders and the title track, You Could Have It So Much Better. If The Fallen had been released a week earlier it'd have been a certain second number one, but was out the same weeks as Gnarls Barkley's behemoth Crazy. Tonight was a big step down, but in No You Girls and Lucid Dreams did contain two of their best tracks and got themselves back into the top 5. Twelve consecutive single releases each made my chart, however since then they've only had a couple of hits, although they have been amongst their biggest including a second number one. I don't think the singles from 2013s Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action were generally any worse than the previous album, but could all only reach 'bubbling under' status. 2015 brought about a collaboration album with 1970s pop rock band Sparks, with Piss Off being an absolute delight. Their chart history became bookended by number one singles at the end of 2017 with Always Ascending, which was a surprisingly excellent comeback. 7. I hadn't been partaking in this one as I don't really like any of the songs in it so don't overly care, but Maroon 5 can't be making the final!
  8. I think Dandy is right with this. I didn't get round to entering this one, but part of that is because I find it very difficult with songs pre 2000 that are relatively unknown. The first contest fell in the sweet spot of fitting likely the least known 'old' act that I'd say I listen to. Personally I've never really seen the point in finding songs specifically to send to a contest, if I don't know and like anything that fits a theme then I won't enter - was the same for the recent CB contest but I know others do. I wouldn't have thought of Future Sound of London or the Chemical Brothers (certainly not that one) for this as I'd say they were too well known for me to enter (not that they necessarily shouldn't be entered, just personal preference for what I'd send) but Roygbiv was one of my two options.
  9. #28 The National Points: 949 Date first charted: 12/04/2010 Number of entries: 14 Total weeks on chart: 156 Most Successful Year: 2010, 3rd wg5geyUlU4Y The National are another act that are quite a bit lower than they should be, they're a much bigger favourite than 28th but that's largely to discovering them late into their career, sometime between the release of Boxer in 2007 and High Violet in 2010. Boxer is a superb and varied album with some of their best on, Mistaken For Strangers was the first I heard, and Brainy, Fake Empire, Slow Show and Gospel are also career highlights. By 2010 I was definitely highly anticipating new music from them, and they didn't disappoint, High Violet was probably my most listened to album of that year and it produced singles which peaked at #1, 3, 8 & 11. Bloodbuzz Ohio was an excellent "debut" but the two standouts on the album were elsewhere, I was delighted when Conversation 16 got a single release and it was an obvious big #1 and remains just about my favourite of theirs, England is another song of tremendous beauty and it was great to see it come to more promenence as the BBC chose it to soundtrack one of their excellent sporting montages, to England's in 2018. Their next album Trouble Will Find Me has some of their best known and highest streamed songs on it, but it's always been the album of theirs I've found weakest, and whilst the one that followed in 2017 produced some great singles, Day I Die getting them a second one at the top, I started to feel they'd become a bit samey. Luckily, for the next album they went in an entirely different direction as all tracks bar the last one featured one of a number of female vocalists. It has gone on to be my second favourite album of theirs after Boxer, and produced a pair of #2 singles in You Had Your Soul With You (Gail Ann Dorsey, long-term Bowie band member) and Rylan (about Clark-Neal, Kate Stables of This Is The Kit). The other two main highlights are I Am Easy To Find (Stables again) and Where Is Her Head (Eve Owen). Eve was a great discovery and her beautiful track She Says went on to become a number one at the beginning of 2020. Last year they hit the top 10 once more with Somebody Desperate from the Cyrano soundtrack. There's a new album with some interesting collaborations penned which I'm hoping are better than the first single from it which isn't likely to get anywhere near charting. 10. #29 Gorillaz Points: 938 Date first charted: 09/05/2005 Number of entries: 17 Total weeks on chart: 135 Most Successful Year: 2010, 8th HyHNuVaZJ-k Gorillaz kicked off 2005 strongly and cemented their position as one of the biggest acts in the country with their great album Demon Days, with both Feel Good Inc. and DARE entering at the top spot, both songs still sound great nearly two decades on and are their career highpoint. The album produced three further hits, including a Double A side which I charted separately for some reason. Aside from the big two, All Alone and White Light are my favourites from it. Their third album, Plastic Beach, is another which I absolutely loved when it came out in 2010, as they continued to work with other artists in ever increasing numbers. The three singles from it all hit the top 10, with Superfast Jellyfish reaching the top spot. It's a fun song but I did tire of it pretty quickly so is one of the least successful number ones I've ever had. White Flag and Sweepstakes are my other picks from it. The next couple of years saw some singles released which weren't on albums, a great shame that DoYaThing isn't on streaming as that was their last top 5 hit for over 10 years. In recent years I've found their songs more hit and miss than previously, and don't really listen to their albums, but they've still racked up a decent amount of chart entries, often working with acts I already like. Hollywood is a good follow-up to previous Plastic Beach work with Snoop, and Momentary Bliss and Aries was their best duo for some time - the latter featuring artists to play instruments rather than provide vocals which was unusual. They rounded off 2022 sneaking into the top 30 with Skinny Ape shooting up the chart, and it's gone on to become a favourite of mine. It took a while for the first half of it to really click, but the second is an absolute banger. Its three weeks at #2 this year would move them up a further four places. 11. #30 Los Campesinos! Points: 938 Date first charted: 12/02/2007 Number of entries: 13 Total weeks on chart: 136 Most Successful Year: 2007, 9th Nj6SO_yKMe8 Emerging from Wales in the mid-00s, Los Campesinos! are one of the lesser known groups of the time, their highest peaking album or single in the UK is #72, but they did emerge with a significant devoted fanbase in both the UK and USA. I was always taken in by their energy, the harmonies between male vocal and female backing vocal from the bands (at the time) three female members, and singer Gareth Paisley's lyrics, regularly referencing sex and often the sport of football too. They've ended up with a very consistent chart history, two singles peaking at each of the top 4 positions, spanning most of their six albums. They started in 2007 with a pair of #4s, the pick being their longest song You! Me! Dancing! which builds up and has a thrilling crescendo with an excellent spoken word monologue, it was featured in a Budweiser advert and as a result is probably their best known song. They got their first number one later that year with The International Tweexcore Underground, before releasing their first two albums in 2008, the debut featuring the rather fabulous My Year In Lists, a huge amount of energy in under two minutes, with no singles released from the second one. Both albums are brilliant, and the debut in particular is a highlight of noughties indie. I was less bothered by their third album and its singles, but I've grown to enjoy it more since particularly Straight In At 101, with those lyrics about sexual encounters referencing football. Other later singles have gone onto be massive growers too, By Your Hand and Hello Sadness I both criminally underrated at the time. Nothing from their 5th album No Blues charted but they hit form again in 2016/7 with their last release to date, hitting the top 3 once more before a second number one Renato Dall'Ara (2008), an amusing ode to their heyday using a 90s England football analogy. They still play shows occasionally and may put out music again, but with members having 'normal' jobs and families it's less likely. Listening to this set of songs again, there aren't many, if any, acts in this 100 who have a better top 15-20 songs, it's a simply majestic list of songs with almost no weak spot. Such is the quality they manage to have two #1s without either making my top 5. Chart History: 12/02/2007 We Throw Parties, You Throw Knives 21-14-04-05-08-21-34 (7 weeks) 21/05/2007 You! Me! 12. #31 Real Lies Points: 935 Date first charted: 07/07/2014 Number of entries: 15 Total weeks on chart: 173 Most Successful Year: 2018, 2nd 12GveMzGUSg Knocked out of the top 30 on the last week of 2022, Real Lies have become something of a favourite in recent years with almost everything they've released ending up charting. They begun in 2014 and I heard some of their singles though evening Radio 1, a dancey feel very obviously from London with Kev Kharas' vocal style and titles of tracks. I enjoyed each single a bit more than the previous and Seven Sisters became a first big hit reaching #2, but it was a while before they'd release anything else but it was well worth the wait, as The Checks took their sound to a more rave-inspired place and never outstays its 7:40 track length, going one better than Seven Sisters and spending four weeks at #1 in total. Later that year they'd work with DJs Tom Demac and Icarus, with White Flowers being beautifully understated and Man of the Land a complete banger which meant they spent the end of the year at #1 again. It was another year before they released anything else, but it's been a steady stream of singles leading up to their eventual second album Lad Ash last year. You Were In Love showed a softer more mellow side to them now they'd become a duo, which was carried on with Birds which is just gorgeous. The pick of the six hits from the last two years is Late Arcades, which has gone on to become my favourite of theirs. It had grown to be something I adored and was set to be a long running number one, but ended up behind the behemoth I Do This All The Time for five weeks before taking its place at the top for one. An Oral History of My First Kiss gave them a 7th top 5 as they led their album campaign with it, featuring a vocal on the chorus from Zoee and entirely spoken word verses. They show no signs of slowing down as Ultraviolet gave them a 15th hit. Every act in the top 30 has released at least three albums during this 20 year period, so they're the top act to have only released the two. 13. #32 Foo Fighters Points: 932 Date first charted: 06/01/2003 Number of entries: 17 Total weeks on chart: 144 Most Successful Year: 2003, 3rd rhzmNRtIp8k 2002s One By One is definitely when I first properly got into Foo Fighters, it was one of the best albums of the period and remains so, comfortably one of my favourite rock albums and one which I still listen to fairly regularly, and contained a superb set of singles including arguably their signature song Times Like These and underrated gems in Low and Have It All, two #1s and a top 3 here. I worked backwards but wasn't as bothered, whilst Everlong is my favourite overall and Learn to Fly would also rank in their top 5 I didn't think their earlier albums were anything like as impressive. Their international run of big albums and singles continued but nothing could quite hit the top 5 for them again, as some excellent songs just missed out, Best of You, DOA and The Pretender could all be classed as songs which could've charted higher, the latter in particular. As the decade turned their hits became less frequent but they still proved a capable band at knocking out decent singles, and did eventually reach the top 5 again after 12 years with Saint Cecelia. That, Run and La Dee Da being a decent trio to (probably) end on. In a way I'm surprised at the chart history and the amount of recent-ish success, as it's felt like way longer than 5 years since I was last bothered by new Foo Fighters music but they had two sizable hits from their last but one album. I do tend to listen to new Foos songs, but they're the second band I referred to in the Stereophonics post - Nothing they release seems to be close to being their best and I don't need any more Foo Fighters songs. I thought that was fine, they didn't need to be shown on screen and Catherine bringing down all three of main the culprits in the series in her final police station scene. Overall it was another great series, some superb acting, feels like Rhys Connah could go on to be a star.
  15. #33 Bon Iver Points: 930 Date first charted: 12/01/2009 Number of entries: 13 Total weeks on chart: 160 Most Successful Year: 2011, 2nd TWcyIpul8OE A strong position for Bon Iver (occasionally just Justin Vernon) but this is largely down to work alongside others rather than his/their own material, with that bringing just 6 entries and 375 points compared to 7 and 555. Coming to wider public attention in 2008 with Skinny Love, it wasn't something I charted and took a while for me top properly enjoy, so the first chart entry wasn't until the year after with Blood Bank. I got into the second, self-titled, album far more than I did For Emma, Forever Ago, as Calgary was another top 5 before Holocene went on to become one of the biggest songs I've ever charted, definitely one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, it's still something I have to pay attention to every second of, one of the few that have stayed in the chart for a full half year. Towers was another decent single from that album, and both Beth/Rest and Perth were also stunning tracks, but after that material has very rarely hit the spot. Third album 22, a Million was a huge disappointment to me of largely self-indulgent dirge and anything I've heard since hasn't been much better, with just 22 (Over Soon) and Naeem managing to chart from this period. But whenever Justin Vernon has lent his vocals elsewhere (sometimes as himself, some as Bon Iver) songs have continued to hit the spot. The two with James Blake show how well the two styles go together, and Tiff with Poliça I've already spoken about, is stunning. It's a 100% 7/7 record of hitting the top 10 when working with other artists, with a couple of them hitting number one, Friends alongside Francis & The Lights, and Exile with Taylor Swift. The former was one of my favourites of 2016 and they followed it up three years later with Take Me To The Light, whilst Exile is the most I've instantly loved a song in a long time, entering high and climbing straight to the top for five weeks. The two voices complement each other so well and I've never begun to tire of it. He'd release a similar song on The Japanese House's EP just a fortnight after Folklore, and Dionne was in the top 10 alongside Exile. 16. #34 Tame Impala Points: 929 Date first charted: 08/10/2012 Number of entries: 16 Total weeks on chart: 155 Most Successful Year: 2015, 2nd pFptt7Cargc Kevin Morby had been releasing music as Tame Impala for quite some time when I first heard of him with the single Elephant, which was his chart debut, and easily the most well known song he'd released. I enjoyed it but not hugely, and wasn't bothered at all for the other big song of the era Feels Like We Only Go Backwards, so a return a couple of years later wasn't exactly something I was anticipating, but Let It Happen happened and it was soon at the top, managing to sneak a week at number one in between two of the years other top 5 singles Giant Peach and Loud Places. 7 minutes of psychedelia with a range of sounds and influences, it's certainly gone on to be a massive favourite of mine and I love how much success its had in recent years on this sites Record of the Decade. From then on hits became more regular, but only Eventually also made the top 10 from strongest album Currents. The Less I Know The Better is deserving of being his biggest hit by some distance, but I'd played it way too much to have a significant impact by the time it was made a single, and some of the others weren't as strong as songs which weren't released - Yes I'm Changing and New Person, Same Old Mistakes in particular. The B-Sides from it were released a couple of years later, and that included my other big favourite List of People (To Try and Forget About), which begun a run of four consecutive top 3 hits. His position is certainly boosted by featuring on a range of other people's singles, with his style perfectly complementing electronic musician ZHU and rapper Theophilus London, the former in particular being a great collaboration. 2019 saw the first new music as he geared up for a fourth album, and Patience and Borderline were everything I wanted in a return. Each of the five singles ended up peaking lower than the previous, with last years contribution to Gorillaz latest project giving him a chart entry for a sixth consecutive year with New Gold, if it was just a straight collaboration it'd probably have been a top 10 but Bootie Brown's part is as meh as rap gets. Madame Helga was something I loved instantly as a comeback as it became a somewhat obvious number one debut, whilst Maybe Tomorrow had to settle for no. 2 behind Just Because by Jane's Addiction. Of the two, the former is definitely still the one I like most, although I'm definitely going against what's common with that. It's rare for a band to hit their commercial peak as deep as 5 albums into their career, but the success gained from Language. Sex. Violence. Other. was fully deserved, and Dakota being a huge number one both for myself and in the UK, and is the only song of theirs in this charting era that would be in my overall top 5 of theirs. The ended 2005 as my top act of the year after follow-up Superman joined it at the top and the other two singles made the top 5 too. Their next album was a complete step down in quality and had just the one charting single, for a week at #38, before a bit of a return to form in 2010 as Could You Be The One returned them to the upper part. I thought I'd lost all interest in them but 2015s Keep The Village Alive was surprisingly excellent, and includes the wonderful Mr & Mrs Smith, comfortably their best song post LSVO. They're the first of about 7-8 acts in the top 40 where I've reached the point where there is simply enough of their music and I've no real interest in hearing anything new. I do tend to listen to new Phonics songs, but it's rare I listen to any more than 3-4 times now and they all tend to provoke the same reaction; there are more than enough decent songs by them to want to listen to something new that's not in their top 40-50 songs. They're still excellent live though, I'm up to three times and I doubt it'll be the last, the televised gig at the Millennium Stadium last summer was superb. 18. The investigation has taken years and there are a tonne of charges, including some that relate to every season. To have come this far after such a thorough investigation, there will be some form of punishment, possibly a transfer ban type rather than demotion or re-awarding titles, but I'd be amazed if they get off completely scot free. A punishment may also prevent certain other teams pushing things too far as well.

It's my favourite song of theirs, an absolute joy of song that never fails to make me happy, and it's their signature song, but it isn't one of their 17 entries here. Early Metronomy singles were ok, but I never massively liked any of them, with the three that did chart not peaking higher than #27 or spending more than 5 weeks charting, so a new single by them wasn't something I'd guarantee hearing. The follow-up to it, The Bay, nearly as joyous, did become their first sizable hit making the top 10. Its parent album The English Riviera is such a great album, definitely their career high point, and my top 3 all come from it now, despite not charting that highly, the drummer Anna Prior led Everything Goes My Way is superb too. Since then they have been something of a mainstay on the chart, with only the odd song not making the chart. Album 4 gave their first top 5 single in Reservoir, and album 5 their first top 3 in Night Owl, whilst the other singles from those typically charted in the bottom half as the stronger tracks were away from the singles - The Upsetter, The Most Immaculate Haircut, Back Together. Their most successful era came with their 6th album, Metronomy Forever, as 4 of its 5 singles charted and they all ended up being in their top 10 most successful, Salted Caramel Ice Cream being the pick of the bunch, I got tired of it pretty quickly but I love it again now, so much fun. Their most recent album, their seventh, finally gave them a number one. It's Good to Be Back is a bit of an odd song to take that title, but it was a solid and typically fun return. I didn't get into Small World as much as most of their previous albums, but the two big singles and Love Factory show they've still got it. The first three albums produced a great amount of excellent and varied singles, Fix Up Look Sharp certainly made me take notice and both Jus A Rascal and his feature with Basement Jaxx, Lucky Star, joined it in making the top 10 that year. I'm surprised I charted Stand Up Tall so lowly as I always remember loving it. Maths + English was the only one of those albums which I've ever really enjoyed all of, as it begun his ascendance to big mainstream star with features of big names Alex Turner and Lily Allen a sign of things to come, and in Flex and Pussyole got his biggest and longest running singles so far. His club banger era was excellent, combined his own style with what was popular at the time and made some incredible singles which deservedly made him a massive star, Bonkers in particular is one of the most instantly loved songs I've ever heard, with it being the last song to enter at #1. I largely stopped enjoying what he released until he returned with Raskit in 2017, which is the second album of his I've fully enjoyed, with Space being another single I instantly loved and remains the song that gets closest to Bonkers as his best, the heavy bass on it is incredible and it's the album of his I enjoy most after M+E. Listening back to these now there are definitely some which haven't aged well that I wouldn't listen to again, primarily the sampling of old hits in Dream and Dirtee Cash. 22. #38 Courteeners Points: 895 Date first charted: 15/02/2010 Number of entries: 14 Total weeks on chart: 162 Most Successful Year: 2015, 9th 3T6gjEhltcg In 2008 I had no real desire for another new typical British indie band, and whilst I certainly never disliked The Courteneers singles I didn't care enough to get into them and chart them, but they've shown incredible longevity and quality to end up in the top 40 here. Album 2, Falcon, kicked off their chart career with three singles that just missed the top 10, but it was an album I got into, and enjoyed more than almost all other indie bands second efforts, and it had plenty of other great tracks on it - The Opener, Sycophant and Lullaby are all great, and Last of the Ladies joins single Take Over The World in showing their softer side. Unlike so many of their peers, they kept getting stronger and third album Anna was another great effort, Lose Control was their first top 10 hit. I must not have realised Are You In Love With a Notion? got a release, as it's amongst their best songs and a huge crowd-pleasing sing-a-long anthem. Whilst I'd consider albums 4-6 as their weakest, they did all provide a huge number one single for me, with Small Bones being their big breakthrough and spending 7 weeks at the top at the end of 2015, another absolutely beautiful love song with an excellent brass section, it's gone on to become one of my favourite and most listened to songs of all time. A second smash #1 was soon to follow as The 17th led their Mapping The Rendezvous album campaign, by this stage they'd developed into something far from the generic indie sound of the mid-noughties, another fantastic anthem with a much wider range of instruments and vocals from Liam Fray. Modern Love and Tip Toes meant half of their top 10s came from this album. Hanging Off Your Cloud, their most recent release, ended up being a third number one, another of their slower songs, and ends up just outside my top 5. Pretty impressive that my six favourite songs of theirs are one from each of their albums. I find it quite incredible at the longevity and success they've been able to have, outliving many of their peers and being currently much more successful than other bands that were bigger initially, with albums continuing to sell well and playing massive shows to more than 50,000 people that sell out in a morning, but it's hard to say it isn't deserved and there's no sense that it'll die down either, their fanbase is remarkably young. Very much out of the same scene as the likes of the Strokes and White Stripes at the beginning of the 00s, they were hugely popular but I wasn't that into them at the time, only the gorgeous Maps I truly appreciated then as it gave them a first top 10, but I like that era's work a lot more now, the best aside from Maps being Y-Control, absent from here. I wasn't that enamoured with album 2 either, Gold Lion was a very different sound and entered high, but didn't stay round for long and has never been one of my favourites. Their third album, It's Blitz!, was fantastic though and turned them into an act which has regularly hit the top end of the chart. Lead single Zero is an absolutely joyous song spending a week at the top and five in the runners up spot, and it's an album I've listened to a hell of a lot. Perhaps controversially though, I would put Heads Will Roll to the bottom of my ranking of it - Skeletons, Runaway, Hysteric are all magnificent. I'm a huge fan of their fourth album Mosquito too, Sacrilege was a great single to return with the but the beautiful Despair was always my favourite from it, both spent an unusaully long four weeks in their top 5 peak positions. Last year they finally returned after an almost 9 year absence, teaming up with another act I like a lot in Perfume Genius, Spitting Off The Edge of the World was something of a grower but became a 5th top 5 and ended the year in my top 50. The album was one of the years best and well worth the wait, post-album single Wolf was the highlight from the first listen, and a second number one was always on the cards when it was announced as a single. Gaps in points between positions so far have rarely been in double figures, but YYYs are someway off #38, if they'd had another #9 with a dozen weeks in the chart they wouldn't move up, they're closer to being out of the top 50 than climbing a place. I never got into their earliest work, in fact I'd say I actively disliked the likes of Photoshop Handsome and My Kz, Ur Bf, so there was no need for me to listen to anything when they came back with a second album. I did eventually listen to that and begin to like it some time after release, but the singles from it by then, Duet and Don't Try, didn't quite work their way into my chart, so it wasn't until their third album that they entered for the first time. Distant Past was the first of an excellent string of singles from Get To Heaven which kicked off a run of six consecutive top 10 entries, that and No Reptiles deservedly going on to become two of their most popular songs, with singer Jonathan Higgs unique voice and almost random lyrics being at their strongest. By the end of this album campaign I'd definitely call myself a fan. As they built up to releasing their fourth album, they announced a couple of gigs in very small venues, one of which I went to see, just after Can't Do was released. I only ended up seeing about half of it as it was on the hottest day of the year and I couldn't cope with the too-crammed-in crowd, so kept going outside, but they opened with the most stunning keyboard led song, which I was dying to hear the studio version of. A Fever Dream lived up to its expectations after a month long wait, and soon shot to the top for their first #1, ending the year as one of 2017s three top songs. That was soon followed up by the excellent Night of the Long Knives, and after that the hits dried up for a while. I playlisted most of the singles from 2018-20 but only Violent Sun made any real impact, and that album was the first time I'd been disappointed with them. They hit the spot again with last years Raw Data Feel though, with Bad Friday being a massive earworm that was so typical of them, becoming their third number one and managing to stay there for five weeks. Teletype followed and continued their run of six top 5 hits all peaking at #1 or #4. I'd not really listened to bands that fell into the indie sub-category of shoegaze before, so they were a complete breath of fresh air to me, and that self titled debut remains an album I listen to fairly regularly. The male & female vocals on most songs really complement each other. They never had a long break between releases and both Higher Than The Stars and Say No To Love were great continuations of their sound before album number two, with producing a second number one single and continuing a 100% top 5 success rate. Second album Belong was another great effort with a fantastic trio of singles in their unmistakable sound, Heart in Your Heartbreak running YAF close as their best song, as it too hit the top, their 3rd in just five releases. A third album was decent too, at least half of it matched the quality of previous work, but didn't produce much in the way of single success with just Kelly hitting the top 10, but Eurydice is up their with my favourite of theirs. Whilst I barely listened to their final album, single When I Dance With You was an excellent final one to release, returning them to the top 3, before they called it a day and split up.
