Team's mix of genres and use of samples has made them stand out since their debut album, parts indie, hip-hop and funk, occasionally instrumental but usually with vocals by Ninja, they were a band I found a huge amount of fun since I was first introduced to them with their single Bottle Rocket. It made me buy their album Thunder, Lightning, Strike which was a great decision, 2005 was a superb year for albums and the first year I really bought loads of them, and it was up their with the best. Its follow-up single Ladyflash made it a pair of #2s. Subsequent singles would each peak at a new position in the top 5 until all of them had been filled, 2007s follow-up album Proof of Youth didn't disappoint, with Grip Like A Vice picking up from where they left off, Doing It Right and The Wrath of Marcie both being huge catchy anthems. It was the lead single to their third album that would take them all the way to the top though. Released right at the end of 2010 and going on to be in my top 5 most successful singles of 2011, Buy Nothing Day was something a bit different from their previous work, for the first time featuring outside help, with Best Coast singer Bethany Cosentino providing most of the vocals, it remains my favourite of theirs, a superb sing-a-long happy song. Until the final week I was counting, that was their last appearance in the top 10. They're up to album 7 now, with their most recent being released next Friday, and each one has been home to at least one hit, with 2015s The Scene Between and 2020s Cookie Scene being the biggest of those until Whammy-O returned them to the top 10 on the last chart of 2022, and top 5 on the first of 2022, 3 minutes of hip-hop influenced perfection with uncredited rapper Nitty Scott having a significant part in it. To add points up to my current chart, the four weeks it's continued to chart would have pushed them up to the top 50. #54 The Horrors Points: 751 Date first charted: 30/10/2006 Number of entries: 13 Total weeks on chart: 128 Most Successful Year: 2009, 6th v7WAHnZPIX0 The Horrors were the latest in a long line of UK indie bands to emerge in 2006 but the initial sound of their first album wasn’t for me, I thought they were a much worse version of Klaxons, who were far from my being one of my favourite bands of the time, and only one single from their debut charted, for the solitary week. That changed immediately when they next put out music at the beginning of 2009, the 8 minute long Sea Within a Sea taking on a more shoegazey feel, Faris Badwan’s distinctive vocals were still there but the music behind it was much more refined and to my tastes and became a top 5 hit. They soon went two places higher with the follow-up Who Can Say, which remains their highest charting hit at #2. 13 years on and both of these have become such favourites of mine, it’s really difficult to pick a favourite of the two, but I doubt there are more than 5 acts in this 100 whose top 2 I’d now rate higher. At the moment, the majestic length of the former just wins out, but Who Can Say is such a beautiful tale, and the spoken word part gets me every time. The whole of that 2009 album Primary Colours was brilliant, and remains one I love a lot, and they added a couple more songs to it and the end of the year, with Whole New Way sending them to the top 5 again. Their third album, Skying, arrived in 2011 and begun with two more top 3 singles, to make it five consecutive top 5s, something which they’ve not got that close to reaching since. Again, it was an album that was one of my favourites of the year, with Still Life being a perfect lead single, taking on the sound they’d continued to develop and making it more refined. It was perhaps less ambitious and more simple than expected, but there were others on the album which made up for that, including follow up I Can See Through You. Their presence in my chart since has become less, but each album still producing a couple of decent efforts. I still thought 2014s Luminous was one of the years best albums, but wasn’t necessarily reflected in the choice of singles, whilst 2017s V was less good it still had its moments, Machine in particular deserving of better, although I quite like the three consecutive #25 peaks. Albums every 2-3 years have stopped and it’s now been 5 ½ since the last one, with a couple of standalone singles and EPs since. Fire Escape and Water Drop was their best for a while, a classic Horrors song merging into an instrumental very nicely, and they begun last year heading for the top 10 for the 7th time with Twisted Skin, again nothing special but classic Horrors sound. #55 iamamiwhoami / ionnalee Points: 749 Date first charted: 30/04/2012 Number of entries: 11 Total weeks on chart: 120 Most Successful Year: 2014, 3rd Bgk7kZedpUc Not technically the same act with ionnalee being more a Jonna Lee solo project, but as the second part of the iamamiwhoami duo Claes Bjorklund fulfils largely the same role of producing and mixing I’ve combined the two, otherwise they’d be around #150 and #300 rather than the much more deserving place of being just outside the top 50. The final act in here which I discovered first due to being sent in Unknown Pleasures when T was sent, the debut album proper Kin in 2012 was something I had some anticipation for, although whilst first single Play was hugely popular it’s never been close to being a favourite of mine and it was Idle Talk that gave a first chart entry, later followed by the more upbeat banger of Goods, as they both ended up with similar chart runs, and the album went on to become something I listened to a lot. I had much more anticipation for 2014s follow-up Blue, and they were quick to match the #4 and #5 peaks of previous singles, Fountain was a huge grower and Hunting For Pearls an excellent pop song. Three more singles were released and all charted making them the third most successful act of 2014, with Blue Blue being the pick of them meaning iamamiwhoami ended with 5 of the 7 charting singles being top 5 hits, but none of them managed to make the top 3. The less said about 2022s music they released, the better. Where iamamiwhoami couldn’t quite reach the top 3, ionnalee did straight away with first release Samaritan making it as high as #2. Whilst it was released under the new moniker it felt like a natural progression of previous work, with some excellent percussion. Follow-ups Not Human and Gone are both decent but didn’t stick around for long and listening back are the weakest two in this bunch. The most recent charting single is also the most successful, with her teaming up with TR/ST to release Harvest. TR/ST are another act who’ve had a decent amount of success but fall just shy of 100 points short of this countdown. It’s comfortably my favourite song either of them of been involved in, a combination of two fairly unique artistic styles and sounds to create something great. #56 Slaves / Soft Play Points: 741 Date first charted: 31/08/2015 Number of entries: 11 Total weeks on chart: 123 Most Successful Year: 2016, 1st iC9JDwCCimA The singles leading up to the release of Slaves debut album had completely passed me by, I'd have heard a couple but as punk-rock isn't really my thing they weren't a band to investigate further. The final single from it, Sockets, was where it changed - 3 and a half minutes of immense fun quickly rose to a top 3 peak and after I caught them performing The Hunter on TV I was interested in them, it was seriously impressive how just two people could make that much noise and perform with such energy. Each single they've subsequently released has charted, with all bar one making at least the top 20, and that only missed out by a place. Where's Your Car Debbie, re-released from the expanded edition of Are You Satisfied, is quite funny for a period but is the one song here I've grown tired of, but it set them off in becoming my top act of 2016, with their song with Chase & Status, Control, charting exactly mid-way between their two previous and continued a 100% top 10 record, it was a great combination of the two acts sounds. Spit It Out was the lead for their second album, which was a continuation of their previous sound, with that and the more mellow Lies both hitting the top 5. I listened to the album quite a lot but found myself going back to their debut much more. Two albums of that sound was likely to be enough for me but Cut and Run, the lead single to their third, was somewhat different, more of a distorted vocal, a pop hook and a music video with a dance tutorial. It wasn't for everyone but had me hooked for a third album, it became their biggest hit as it reached #2, and was joined there two months later by its follow-up Chokehold. After reaching the top 10 with 7 of their first 8 singles the subsequent 3 have all fallen just short, including the lead of their last EP release and their contribution to the last Gorillaz album, which probably did deserve more. Last month they announced a name change to Soft Play, and will soon release new music, so there's a good chance of them climbing into the top 50. #57 Calvin Harris Points: 739 Date first charted: 26/02/2007 Number of entries: 12 Total weeks on chart: 106 Most Successful Year: 2007, 14th a8TPXFoXO5A There's certainly more of a sense of "what was I doing there?!" when looking at Calvin Harris' chart history than there is with everyone else in here. For five years he was responsible for some great commercial dance and his remixes were always on point. There's a significant amount of undercharting here, the chart runs and peaks for I'm Not Alone and Feel So Close are awfully low looking back, the former one of the decade's best number ones and the latter something I loved hearing out back in the days where I might spend nights in establishments that'd play the likes of Calvin Harris. We Found Love, too, was and still is excellent although I at least gave it the longevity it deserved. That said, it's balanced out by his second highest peak being for The Girls, which now I would rank considerably lower than the other 11 entries here. Acceptable In The 80s was an excellent debut single, something quirky and different that I loved, and Dance Wiv Me was the deserving big commercial success for both him and Dizzee. The 00s also produced a couple of excellent remixes for lesser known acts I was a fan of in The Hours and The Mitchell Brothers (the rappers). The following decade started well with some more great collabs with big artists, but despite continuing to get huge commercial success, there was precious little of his I had any time for - looking through his UK chart history it's a huge swathe of bad, generic dance. I'd still typically listen to his new songs which is why I did manage to catch the excellent Promises, but post Sweet Nothing there's only One Kiss and I Need Your Love that would also have come close to making my chart. #58 Goldfrapp Points: 670 Date first charted: 14/04/2003 Number of entries: 11 Total weeks on chart: 96 Most Successful Year: 2008, 28th p7Ptai9I6eo 2003 would have been my introduction to Goldfrapp, with the singles from their second album to be the first that made the UK top 40, and I enjoyed all of them with all four making the top 20 and two of them top 10. Black Cherry is a nice album full of synthy goodness, but it was their next album when I got properly into them and they scored a string of big hits. Ooh La La was a great upbeat anthem that became their biggest hit, both for me and across the world, follow-up Number One was more melancholic and Ride A White Horse somewhere between the two as it entered at the top spot, completing the 1-2-3 hat-trick of peaks for that album. Some people who'd been fans since the early days weren't as impressed by Supernature, but for me it's by far their best album, a wonderful variety of beauty and disco stompers - outside of the singles Lovely 2 C U, Satin Chic and You Never Know are also excellent. A second number one single soon followed with A&E, the lead single from their fourth album Seventh Tree, which entered high and quickly rose to the top. It was a bit of a change in direction back towards their earliest work, less synth led and much lower tempo, and is the track of theirs I go back to most now. Their success since then has been very limited, I've tended to find their songs quite boring although Anymore did sneak in for 5 weeks with a low peak six years ago, and I am absolutely stretching the limits of acceptability by including The Night here, as it is technically only featuring Alison Goldfrapp and not them as a duo, it's been the clear standout from Röyksopp's recent output and returned both acts to the upper echelons of the chart for the first time in a while. Bonus fun fact: I was listening to their song Utopia when I had to decide a name for my country in BJSC. #59 Crystal Castles Points: 724 Date first charted: 21/04/2008 Number of entries: 9 Total weeks on chart: 133 Most Successful Year: 2010, 6th xsV8TrF4gN0 :mansoncheer: A difficult one to write about given the allegations that came out from Alice Glass about the other member of the duo Ethan Kath, related to sexual abuse and control, since any music was released under the Crystal Castles name. They were once a great outfit who's output I loved for a long time, but its quite rare that I listen to them now, only when the classics come on shuffle. I struggled with the sound of most of their 2008 debut at the time but Courtship Dating was on the right side of their acquired sound. It was from album 2 that I properly started enjoying them, with Celestica being so much more accessible but very much still classically them, and Baptism doing what they did before but better, and continued a strong 100% top 5 run, but nothing they ever did came close to the sheer brilliance of the Robert Smith version of Not In Love. The album version was a nice enough album track but adding his vocals to it took it to a whole new level, the perfect match-up, it's defintiely up there with the best singles of the 2010s. The last album with Alice on vocals, 2012s (III) is my favourite record of theirs, Plague unlucky not to become their 2nd number one by being out at the same time as Purity Ring's Fineshrine making one hell of a top 2. The albums with Edith Frances on vocals were largely fine but didn't really make anything like the same kind of mark on me as the work prior to her arrival, but Concrete was a great song that saw them back on top form, and Kept I thought was excellent, like a better version of Sad Eyes. When they released good enough songs for me to chart, they certainly never missed - quite comfortably the top act not to reach double figures in entries, infact every act ahead has at least two more entries than them. #60 The Maccabees Points: 722 Date first charted: 19/02/2007 Number of entries: 10 Total weeks on chart: 111 Most Successful Year: 2012, 11th y4xiP4gdTT4 Another British indie band to have emerged in the mid 00s now, but this time one who very much got better into the next decade. The Maccabees had four UK top 75 hits from their debut album, but the only one I was that fussed on was About Your Dress, which over time has gone on to become one of my absolute favourite songs of that period in indie. I still think their best work was their middle two albums though, Love You Better was a belter of a single to return with and gave them a first big hit, and half of its parent album Wall of Arms is brilliant, but its highlight came on the deluxe version as Roots Manuva added some verses to the chorus of No Kind Words. The Maccabees + Rap = A winner 2012 was their peak though, with the album released at the beginning January following the release of Pelican, a punchy song that was very typically Maccabees and became their first of three number ones. Given To The Wild was certainly a more varied album than anything they'd released previously, typified by Went Away and its closer Grew Up at Midnight which are both stunning, far more mellow songs than was usual. They called it a day after album four which, although decent, was definitely a come down on previous, though their last single Spit It Out was amongst their best, and gave them a third and final number one. #61 Grimes Points: 720 Date first charted: 27/02/2012 Number of entries: 11 Total weeks on chart: 124 Most Successful Year: 2012, 9th Tv9YoYCKNoE Grimes has amassed a brilliant collection of singles here, but she's certainly not someone I've ever considered to be amongst my favourite acts. Outside of this lot, I find her far more miss than hit and there are some quite popular singles (hello Delete Forever, We Appreciate Power, REALiTi) that I just don't understand the fuss over at all. Genesis was my introduction to her, it was a huge debut hit and remains a brilliant song I listen to regularly. Oblivion was also excellent and its parent album Visions is the only one of hers I've listened to much, quickly followed by the first of two excellent Blood Diamonds collabs (quite surprised I never charted Go). There were some excellent singles from her next album, but I didn't get into them until the album had come out, whilst Kill V. Maim went on to be her biggest hit with 4 weeks at number one, Flesh Without Blood has been the one that lasted. Her collaborations have always been quite endearing, working well with acts of different genres, the Janelle ones are both excellent and the rockier sound of Play Destroy with Poppy was such a good fit and gone on to become one of my favourites. Listening again to the singles from her most recent album, I'd say the chart runs of Violence and 4Æm were the wrong way around, the former I'm no longer fond of as its recent excellent chart run would perhaps suggest. #62 Public Service Broadcasting Points: 712 Date first charted: 19/11/2012 Number of entries: 12 Total weeks on chart: 115 Most Successful Year: 2021, 4th vhgfzEm3CWU Probably the most unique act of the 100 now at #62, in the form of Public Service Broadcasting. When I first heard their early work in Everest and Spitfire I was pretty mesmerised, putting clips of old public information films to music was certainly nothing like anything I'd ever heard before, and it worked so well. The debut album Inform - Educate - Entertain is one of my favourite of all time, with the same theme running throughout, each song based upon a different film, with Signal 30 (road safety) and Night Mail (the postal service) both released as singles, and the latter reaching the top, such an infectious song. As a live act, they were simply incredible. The 2014 tour I saw them on definitely one of the most satisfied I've ever been coming away from a gig. Each album has been made in a similar way, taking clips of old films and videos and setting them to music, taking in the US-Soviet space race, the Welsh mining industry and Berlin. There was little success from The Race for Space, it seems to be the most popular album amongst their fanbase but I found it hard to get into, I think down to a combination of this type of music being quite samey and one perfect album was enough, and there being few things I find quite as boring as space travel. Gagarin was a nice return with a great brass section involved, but a couple of weeks just in the chart for Go! was all else it could muster. 2017s Every Valley wasn't a huge difference, I preferred it as an album to their last but the tracks on it don't stand out so weren't especially successful and they looked like being a one album wonder, but their fourth album Bright Magic changed that. Their return People, Let's Dance was an upbeat earworm that made you want to... dance, with EERA providing some excellent vocals in both German and English, it finally returned them to the top 10 at #4 and the subsequent singles continued to take them further, Blue Heaven is a beautiful song with Andreya Casablanca providing as much singing they've ever included, and Im Licht getting them a second number one - there's no doubt its sharp rise to the very top was influenced by seeing them live a second time, I do prefer the other two but it is great. #63 Poliça Points: 711 Date first charted: 07/05/2012 Number of entries: 13 Total weeks on chart: 118 Most Successful Year: 2013, 14th B_vx7AMkUMU Poliça's 2012 debut album Give You The Ghost was a bit of a random find in 2012, but its synth driven indie pop made it one of my favourites of the year, with two charting singles and some excellent other tracks on it, Dark Star and Lay Your Cards Out being the pick. They returned fairly quickly with just 18 months between their first two albums, and teamed up with Bon Iver's Justin Vernon for its lead single Tiff, which peaked at #2 but really should've made it that place higher. It was another good album and the chart positions of its singles probably don't do it justice. Since then, the majority of their entries have come in the form of teaming up with dance artists, with either Poliça or lead singer Channy Leaneagh credited on tracks by Leftfield and Lane 8, doubling their amount of top 5 entries and the understated No Captain going all the way to the top in 2017. Despite not charting in the last three years they've still been involved in some decent stuff and weren't far from extending on a number of occasions, with more dance collaborations with Lane 8 and Sonnee, and a new album last year. They were another one who I enjoyed with their first release, Creepin' Up The Backstaits, and bought their debut album as soon as it was released, and it was one of the more impressive albums of the time. Chelsea Dagger has certainly felt the effects of complete overplay, but I don't mind it compared to other big indie its of the time, I think I'd still rather listen to it than either Mr Brightside or Sex on Fire... But that was never my favourite anyway, Henrietta was one of my final CD single purchases, went straight in at the top and it remains my favourite of theirs, similarly anthemic but better. Like so many others they really fell away with a second album, A Heady Tale is the only song on it worth listening to now, and soon split up. But they reformed a few years after but anything I did listen to I wasn't bothered by. That was until the end of 2017 when they released Stand Up Tragedy, the lead single for their 5th album. It was a huge grower when I enjoyed it far more than I ever imagined I would a Fratellis song again, I began to pay more attention to them again, the album was surprisingly decent, and they've charted twice more which has pushed them up about 50 places from just outside the top 100. #65 Basement Jaxx Points: 706 Date first charted: 10/11/2003 Number of entries: 11 Total weeks on chart: 106 Most Successful Year: 2004, 14th HbVKmSQqELY Despite being past their commercial and musical peak by the time I'd started recording my chart, Basement Jaxx were still prolific hitters with a string of six singles all reaching the top 10, with Good Luck getting there twice and also being their first of two back-to-back number ones. It probably remains my favourite of theirs ahead of some of their earlier songs, and whilst Plug It In is still something I enjoy it's not a personal #1 I hold in that high regard. Their 2005 Singles Collection showed what an excellent body of work they'd created in a short space of time and continued with that, Oh My Gosh being another top song and finally an official release for Do Your Thing, deservedly regarded as one of their best. Whilst they weren't as strong after 2005 they'd still released the odd decent single, and Scars had some great songs on it, Saga, with Santigold on vocals, just misses this top 5 behind My Turn with the underappreciated Lightspeed Champion. Thanks for your continued comments Dr B (sorry, missed seeing this earlier somehow!) I knew you were a big fan of Jamie, but that's a seriously impressive haul of number ones. A shame The xx aren't here but they did fall well short, you're right about them not exactly being prolific, and I did think their first album was more of a great album together than loads of brilliant individual tracks, so only a couple from that made it. I saw Bloc Party on their tour last year, they were great but do wish I'd managed to see them earlier, that sounds like a great gig to have been at. The Bicep set at Glastonbury was great when I watched it. A shame I didn't go to it even though I was there, Sunday night a bit awkward and have to be in the mood for that type of set, think I'd have definitely gone if they were on Saturday. Just a Day is an absolute belter, always loved that song and if I'd been doing this a bit longer would definitely have been a big number one, always much preferred that to their other big hit Buck Rogers which I found really annoying after a while.

#66 George FitzGerald Points: 701 Date first charted: 16/03/2015 Number of entries: 11 Total weeks on chart: 118 Most Successful Year: 2022, 14th -1EbrRvRoVY Being slightly generous with my combination of artists for this entry, but OTHERLiiNE being a duo consisting of George FitzGerald and Lil Silva meant I felt that their points should be awarded to both, as in reality they were no different to Roll Back which had charted previously, similar to The Carters for Jay-Z and Beyoncé. George has become one of my favourite electronic music producers in recent years, having now released three excellent albums. There was only one big hit from his first in Full Circle, featuring vocals from Boxed In, but it was an album I listened to a lot up until the release of his second in 2018, which was even better, though once again it was only the singles where he'd collaborated which charted, Roll Back some great chillout with Lil Silva, and Nobody But You with Hudson Scott, both made the top 3. The OTHERLiiNE project with Lil Silva was somewhat different in style to Roll Back, more upbeat and not quite as understated as the first song from it Chimes went one place higher than previous, and the two other singles from the strong EP both made the top 20. Last year he released his third album Stellar Drifting, with the singles preceding it giving him a first completely solo chart hit, and a first number one. Ultraviolet was a great return and Cold grew on me hugely to reach the top, it's somewhat repetitive but I thought it was his best song yet. For the first time an album of his produced more than two hits, as his collaborations with SOAK and Panda Bear also charted, and there's also an excellent song with London Grammar hidden away on the album. After its release I bought that album and it ended 2007 as my favourite album of the year, with Paper Planes being a huge standout, so it was no surprise that it quickly shot to the top upon its release as a single, its clever use of samples being incredibly innovative at the time and still sounding amazing today. It was another year before her next chart entry, when a couple of tracks she featured on entered in quick succession, O... Saya from the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack gave her consecutive number ones, and Sound of Kuduro with Portuguese group Buraka Som Sistema also made the top 10. Noughties M.I.A. was very hit or miss, I found Maya to be a hugely disappointing follow-up to Kala, although It Takes a Muscle is still something I listen to now, and Come Walk With Me is the only song from this period that I've enjoyed as much as previous eras. The hits kept coming regularly enough though, with 2015 and 2016 both giving sizable hits with collaboration with Gener8ion and Freedun with One Direction's Zayn. Last years The One gave her a first hit in 6 years, but I soon got bored of it and when I was listening to the tracks I'd playlisted last year I ranked it as the weakest to have made my top 40. Hi Jim, glad you know you have been following and you're enjoying the presentation. :D Keeping a chart just became a habit really. Being on this forum and similar since the summer of 2004 when I saw they were a thing other people did made it easier to record one and just saved them in a Word document for each year. Even though my forum posting has at times become more sporadic I have found keeping a chart to be a useful record and helps with keeping current playlists of my favourite tracks. Going back and properly recording everything in spreadsheets was a bit of a huge task, and sometimes I do lapse over quite long periods so there becomes a lot to catch up on, lockdowns made that easier! Spotify definitely makes it easier to find when older acts release stuff you wouldn't necessarily find out about, either on the individual playlists or the NMF one - definitely been some unexpected stuff I've found in the lower reaches of that playlist before.

#68 Noah and the Whale Points: 698 Date first charted: 21/01/2008 Number of entries: 10 Total weeks on chart: 97 Most Successful Year: 2008, 5th 6U9jYGUgiW4 A more quirky addition to the long line of indie bands which had emerged in the previous years who deservedly found some success. The singles from Noah and the Whale's first album got better with each release, with them peaking at each position in the top 3 with the excellent 5 Years Time going to the top and bringing them into the mainstream. A short gap between albums came with a change of sound, The First Days of Spring much more folk orientated than previous material, Blue Skies was an exceptional lead single which continued their top 3 run, and its title track remains by far my favourite song of theirs. It's their album that I still listen most. There was another short gap to their third album which brought with it their second big commercial hit in L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N. which quickly became a big favourite of mine and gave them a second #1, and was followed by some further big sounding singles, the pick of the bunch being Waiting For My Chance To Come. I wasn't as fussed with their final album but the first three were all excellent and each quite different, which kept them feeling fresh. Listening back, this is definitely an excellent collection of 10 singles, 10-15 years later they're sounding as great as they ever did.
