  1. this is definitely the track on the album she most sounds like michael, there are clear janet vocals in other places throughout the album.

i suppose her voice has just got deeper as she's gotten older, happens to a lot of people. she was never far off michael vocally to begin with anyway.

  2. i remember thinking how incredibly disappointing it was when it first came out. i remember the hype was off the scale and then the song was pretty uninteresting

unfortunately that opinion still stands and it is still probably my least favourite single by her ever

  3. ...and that's probably the reason why you don't get it like some others do :P it took me a good few listens all the way through to properly get the album. An album like this is so multi-layered it's impossible to understand it immediately imo. I only understood what 'Your Type' was about after the video was released for example and that was months and months after the album came. I would much rather an album that matured over time and the more attention you gave it rather than out and out, in your face bangers that didn't leave much to the imagination.

maybe i will give it another go then.

to be fair 'all that' shits on taylor's entire discography so it's not as if i don't have some love there already. maybe it's just the incredible amount of praise/hype that i found off-putting and left me rather disappointed. i just remember thinking it was a strong but ultimately rather average pop album.

  4. Sorry. Still so not getting the hype around EMOTION at all. I think it's a very average album with a few very good pop moments scattered throughout and that's about it. Solid 7/10 type album material. I've also never really had the urge to go back and listen to it in full after my first listen.

1989 (taking out one or two weaker tracks towards the end) is absolute pop perfection.

  5. i love Gaga and she hasn't put a foot wrong for me in the last couple of years but i thought the performance was awful.

far far too busy and it came across very gimmicky, which was exactly the reason why people went off her. i think a couple of songs (sung without trying too impressionate him vocally) and something without all the costume changes would have gone down far better. was just a bit all over the place.

  6. it's just nonsense.

here he is going on about wanting people to fund him so he can continue to share his art with the world

I am of service to the world with my art and I just want to serve more.

and then he basically says that a hell of a lot of people aren't even allowed to hear the album because he won't even put his album out there for sale.

  7. his twitter is too much. even though pitchfork gave him a 9.0/10.0 he ain't happy and has asked for them to stop reviewing his album because they are white and they can't truly judge black music. ludicrous.

at least he has announced even more new music coming though:

Also all Good Fridays songs will be on Tidal. Me and Kendrick got 40 songs and me and Young Thug got 40 songs. 40/40 club!!!

looks like we are going to get a hell of a lot of kanye this year outwith the album

  8. Pretty sure it's my favourite of all time but I always find it hard to choose between it and Cassie's 'RockaByeBaby' 😍

I think it's my number two. I always quote this as my top 3:

    1. Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

    2. Kanye West - MBDTF

    3. Janet Jackson - The Velvet Rope

  9. after letting it the album settle in for a couple of days i would say my initial rate would go something like:

11.0 Ultralight Beam (can't describe how much i love this - kelly price giving me life)

09.0 Father Stretch My Hands Part 1

10.0 Part 2 (so so need to hear this in a club)

    07.0 Famous

    08.0 Feedback

08.0 Highlights (reminds me of 808's)

    07.5 Freestyle 4

10.0 Waves (just shows chris needs some less generic production on own stuff)

09.0 FML (the chorus is so stunning i can forgive the weak verses)

    10.0 Real Friends

09.0 Wolves (would be a 10 with the vic verse)

    05.0 30 Hours

08.5 No More Parties In L.A.

    06.0 Facts

09.0 Fade (the instrumental is just so captivating)

  10. all of these incredibly low scores for get me bodied...

you's didn't even deserve the song in the first place. i like to think of it as my own lil personal gift from bey to force my friends to do the entire 7 minute dance routine when drunk. i've been getting the greatest use out of my gift for many years now. another personal thanks.

  11. this version improves it vastly

makes it that bit more fun, something that sia couldn't quite pull off on her own. always thought the album version felt a bit empty but this is now sounding like a rather big pop song now. pleased to see it doing well on itunes already, hopefully will become a hit.

  12. exactly. i think the fact that kanye has always been such a perfectionist and always seemed so incredibly on top of his craft, just how messy this campaign has been has been disconcerting to say the least.

i also hate to admit, i feel like it is the album of his that he least personally shines on. obviously the whole album is his creation but on some of the main highlights (Ultralight Beam, Waves) it is actually the featured artists who steal the limelight. i know kanye has always been boastful and that is partly what makes him so great (and so kanye) but lyrically throughout this album i think he probably veers a tad too far into that territory, so much so that it almost detracts from the lyrical depth. normally they go hand in hand but i just feel lyrically this album doesn't have the depth of some of his previous work. maybe that is also caused by how much space the album gives over to it's features as well.

having said that, the production on the whole work is outstanding and it is a real sonically beautiful album. 'Ultralight Beam', 'Father Stretch My Hands' Part 1 & 2, 'FML', 'Wolves', 'Waves', 'Real Friends', 'Highlights', 'Feedback' and 'Fade' are all individually brilliant and definitely rise above any of the problems with the campaign. i love the fact that he has used gospel elements throughout, as that sound has always suited him down to a tee ('Jesus Walks' being my all time kanye fav) and i love how the album seems to implicitly reference basically all of his his previous body of work at some point throughout. i feel like it's almost unfair to compare it to some of his previous masterpieces as he has set the standard so inexplicably high with records like MBDTF. this really is a superb album and will definitely remain one of the best released this year for certain.
