Streaming Services Chart Discussion; W/C 25/04/25
2024 was such an amazing year for music so it’s not a surprise that plenty of the big hits are sticking around, but it’s a shame that plenty of great new songs from this year aren’t landing as hard, even from those same artists - particularly want Blink Twice to have a sharp rise and hope Myles new song has a decent shot, and Benson to get top 10 with both his recent releases, feels like this year still hasn’t properly got started and we’re nearly in May!

Top 100 chart criteria during the noughties
I think so, or at least thats how it appears on the listings and when you search on spotify. Can't find an example off hand but there were plenty with two artists listed but they only did the one song on the single.

Top 100 chart criteria during the noughties
No worries, and thanks for spotting those, I have updated the playlist! Shouldn't be too many oversights but any others please let me know!

Top 100 chart criteria during the noughties
For anyone interested these are the playlists - 2000s 2010s 2020s The noughties is currently complete to June 2004, there is naturally a lot missing as many were rare releases and not on streaming but they are as complete as I can get them!

Top 100 chart criteria during the noughties
Recently I have been creating a playlist for all the songs which made the top 100 but missed the top 40 during the noughties (I have similar completed ones for the 2010s and 2020s so far that I keep updated). Looking down the lower end of the chart during the early noughties up to about 2005, there are a lot of very strange dance remixes, EPs, things like "City Sounds" etc. There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason from what could chart - does anybody know what the criteria would have been for songs/EPs to chart back then? Can't imagine many people will have heard a lot of the obscure entries, and there were a lot of albums passing as EPs. There also appeared to be a load of double-A sides but by two different artists which is also confusing! It seemed to die down by about 2006 and songs below the top 40 were a lot more like what we would be familiar with now (fifth singles from albums, up and coming artists etc.).

It's like 2017 all over again! The year of Despacito, Reggaeton Lento, Mi Gente and Subeme La Radio! Loved that era :)

So many great songs from last year still high on Spotify, but really hope we have a flurry of new releases soon! Its getting dull looking at the rankings!

Radio 1's Sound Of 2025
All very valid points, as was the previous post! Hopefully the backlash will have a weird effect and boost her further while people check out the acts like Mkgee and kneecap as a result. That’s ultimately what the shortlist should be about regardless of who they set as their winner, otherwise it shows how lazy the UK public are in discovering new music! But I agree Radio 1 have made a misstep here!

Radio 1's Sound Of 2025
I get the negative talk about Chappell winning this, but in fairness her sheer explosion (after Olivia and Presidents Ball) was incredible, and I don't think Radio 1 could be accused of not having their finger on the pulse with that. Her album did nothing in 2023 and H2G, PPC and RWS all soared on their own right off the back of GLB. The way acts break through has also changed from the early days of Sound Of... and she does fit the criteria. All on this list have had a great career already, some more than others, so I think Chappell does deserve recognition.

iTunes Weekly Thread w/c 10th January 2025
iTunes chart is actually hilarious now - only Teddy and Jade from that lot are likely to touch the top 40! Some big acts there but they just don't stream anymore.

Songs that topped the Big Top 40 but not the Official Chart
Looking at this year, only Stick Season, Texas Hold Em, Houdini, Too Sweet and Backbone have topped both if I’ve totted up correctly, not necessarily the same weeks, all have made the top 40, and feelslikeimfallinginlove, Abracadabra and the Granny Harmers oddity are the only ones to miss the top 10. Still strange seeing the discrepancies though, and anybody who thinks of the Big Top 40 as official I do question
