Streaming Services Chart Discussion
So many great songs from last year still high on Spotify, but really hope we have a flurry of new releases soon! Its getting dull looking at the rankings!

Radio 1's Sound Of 2025
All very valid points, as was the previous post! Hopefully the backlash will have a weird effect and boost her further while people check out the acts like Mkgee and kneecap as a result. That’s ultimately what the shortlist should be about regardless of who they set as their winner, otherwise it shows how lazy the UK public are in discovering new music! But I agree Radio 1 have made a misstep here!

Didn't listen to Luther when it was released, its a really nice song!

As much as I still love a lot of the songs at the lower end (Beautiful Things, Stick Season, A Bar Song, Stargazing), its a shame that Indigo has probably missed out. Hopefully next week unless it has had a big climb, thought it was going to be one of the big new hits of the year. Same with PAWSA, I thought that would keep climbing. The chart is very stale at the start of this year!

Radio 1's Sound Of 2025
I get the negative talk about Chappell winning this, but in fairness her sheer explosion (after Olivia and Presidents Ball) was incredible, and I don't think Radio 1 could be accused of not having their finger on the pulse with that. Her album did nothing in 2023 and H2G, PPC and RWS all soared on their own right off the back of GLB. The way acts break through has also changed from the early days of Sound Of... and she does fit the criteria. All on this list have had a great career already, some more than others, so I think Chappell does deserve recognition.

Radio 1 Playlist (10/01/25)
Great to see Ezra Collective, English Teacher and Chappell's Pink Pony Club make the playlist (not sure what R1 have been doing with the latter unless it is only now being pushed as a single, or tied to her Sound Of win, but still). Doecchi and SZA on there as well, and Fontaines, Sub Focus, Chrystal, Tyla, Blossoms, PAWSA and Coldplay's beautiful All My Love moving up. Strong start to 2025.

iTunes Weekly Thread w/c 10th January 2025
iTunes chart is actually hilarious now - only Teddy and Jade from that lot are likely to touch the top 40! Some big acts there but they just don't stream anymore.

Hope Apt and Messy both get to #1 but delighted for Gracie getting a sixth week, bonafide smash and very excited to see her live in March! Would love Close to You and Risk to rise to new peaks as well, and Blowing Smoke deserves it’s moment!

Still don’t understand Buzzjack’s general dislike for Teddy, Ed, Lewis etc and don’t think I ever will 😂 I’m a massive fan of all of them, well as Buzzjack favourites like Charli, Gaga, Chappell etc. All merit their success.

Do they not actually know the song names without reading. Even if it was written wrong I would still know it’s Bed Chem! Thought the presenters were music fans!

Friday Chart Predictions
Where are all the new hits or rising songs from the lower end - remember when the Encanto songs exploded into life after new year and I never saw that coming, Raye in 2023 and Noah last year, but this year I could have comfortably guessed most of the top 4 (bar the few Christmas songs still being there in the update). Guess Chrystal has been building gradually, and Messy obviously gaining momentum, but there’s not much else! And there were plenty of songs by big artists which were in the low 100s end of last year which should surely be primed as hits now.

Songs that topped the Big Top 40 but not the Official Chart
Looking at this year, only Stick Season, Texas Hold Em, Houdini, Too Sweet and Backbone have topped both if I’ve totted up correctly, not necessarily the same weeks, all have made the top 40, and feelslikeimfallinginlove, Abracadabra and the Granny Harmers oddity are the only ones to miss the top 10. Still strange seeing the discrepancies though, and anybody who thinks of the Big Top 40 as official I do question

2024 Singles Year To Date Estimates
Must be those low first-week at number one sales that did it, in every other sense since then its been a big hit, shame it's likely to miss out

Friday Chart Predictions
Still incredible for Gracie if she gets number 2 behind a song which is on every Christmas playlist and benefits from the UK public and particularly older listeners being so stuck in their ways with what they listen to. Nothing against Last Christmas as it’s an all-time classic for a reason and was amazing seeing it finally land Christmas number one, but even Pogues, Brenda or Mariah got it one year rather than Wham for eternity. If anything proves what a smash That’s So True and hopefully stops any dissing of Gracie this should be it, that it has fought against the tide of Christmas songs along with Apt and Messy!

Friday Chart Predictions
That’s fair, I have quite a wide taste and don’t have any hate for any artists, some I like less than others but prefer to promote the ones I like! Massive Charli, Chappell, Dua Lipa, Sabrina, Taylor and Olivia fan!

Friday Chart Predictions
Do wonder if it was people’s favourite artists recording an Amazon song whether the comments would be so snarky! Buzzjack has a weird thing against male artists or is that just me? Teddy Swims, Ed Sheeran, Lewis Capaldi, Tom Grennan, Sam Ryder all fantastic imo

The UK charts are broken
I think it should be talked about more, the charts are representative of what is being listened to, but with Jack Saunders acting shocked when a song falls to ACR the public are clearly not well informed. If more publicity is given to it people will realise it is doing a decent job with an imperfect system. It would be great for more songs to break through - so many which would have been big hits a few years ago, even by artists who are not that long in the tooth - but we are never going to be back in the 90s/2000s position where you had songs entering the top 10 and then a 4 week chart run and out. Still happens occasionally but very rare. Things have changed but the same happened with downloads, it was a sea-change and took a while for people to catch on. Streaming is here to stay and it would be wrong for them to ignore it, and I think despite its faults they are doing a good job of representing what is being listened to.
