Alexa is the dubious modern equivalent of the Woolworths chart in the late 90s and 2000s. All through the 80s and early 90s they displayed the Gallup Top 75 then they switched to their own paid-for-in-house-rankings "chart". I always remember the funniest quote from someone who worked at Gallup who said that "week after week, a packet of 4 AA batteries was the UK number one thanks to Woolworths" :) hahahaha

Hahahahahahahaha I can hear it now: Unsuspecting person: "Alexa you sl@g, play All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey." Alexa: "Jess Glynne premium play coming up right away, followed by a night of River after River after River by Ellie Goulding. Have you considered listening to our other exclusive covers that no one ever wanted to hear?"

hahahahahahahahahahahaha oh this is fantastic! How you've made me laugh! NUMBER ONE. 26 years in the making, even if it is by virtue of Mickey Mouse streaming "sales". About time it did some good. By the way, the emergency meeting was a comment I made last night - it didn't really happen- but feel free to spread the urban myth hahahahaha At 14, I listened, religiously, as always in those days, to that Christmas Top 40 on Christmas Day, knowing she wasn't number one after they confirmed East 17's (convincing) triumph on the Christmas TOTP a few hours prior. Imagine 26 years later. Good for her and good for all the people that genuinely like the song. I really have nothing against Last Christmas - it is welcome to become number one too. I do however, have a problem with corruption and injustice that goes unchallenged. It's great that this year that was rectified. It really was the biggest chart travesty. But it's OK, Martin Talbot will be cashing his latest sizeable cheque from Amazon in the next few days and this week's number 13 will continue to dubiously rise. Although maybe they won't bother now thanks to the Great British public, who, as you mentioned, had her at number for a number of years now minus ACR but last year, it was achieved in spite of it. Finally, the only number-two-peaking record that was denied it's genuine glory has it. All I Want For Christmas Is You. A number one :) P.S. There aren't that many fnas left but a lot of people like the song ;-) Enjoy your night of celebration - I know I will :)

Most of Mariah's singles that were US number ones were UK top 5s or top 10s. I think a lot of it is to do with homegrown artists. Her peak years in the UK were from 1993 to 1996 and after that she never quite did it again. She was everywhere in 1994. Without You really launched her to another level in the UK for a few years. I still remember listening to the chart that week and being shocked when we got to number two and it was number one. Up until today, she had only had two cover versions at number one. So it's nice that her songwriting is acknowledged 26 years on :)

I might be wrong in this (please correct me if so) but until tonight, AIWFCIY was the only song ever on the UK charts that had been denied number one by ACR (others had already made it so even if they dropped because of ACR, they had already peaked at 1). Is that correct?

It would be different if there was no evidence - there is loads. But it doesn't matter anymore as finally justice has been done. Shaky won't do it. It'll be Mariah again or Wham! or Jess Glynne if Amazon's bumper pay cheque has cleared in Martin Talbot's account. hahaha she's back at 96 now though - such a well-loved, cherished Christmas classic.

Thank you for insightful analysis based on nothing whatsoever. I offered to show you the (compelling) evidence last night but I presume that offer has been snubbed. No one was crying, they were rationally questioning fudged statistics and Amazon figures which are never readily available in the public domain (like literally all other figures).

I think it's due to being inarticulate and having a limited vocabulary. That was painful...
